Fastest in college football? UW-Eau Claire's Thurgood Dennis eyes NFL, Olympics

There is no way of knowing whether Thurgood Dennis would have already developed into a shutdown cornerback for a Division I college football program. No way to quantify how his 6-foot, 178-pound frame could handle wide receivers with a five-inch height advantage.
The only quantifiable measurement that allows anybody to make comparisons now is his speed. And speed, it turns out, Dennis has in bunches.
CBSSports.com college football writer Chris Huston recently ranked the fastest players in college football among those with track backgrounds. Using official "Fully Automated Time" measurements that included 100- and 200-meter dash times, he compiled a list that included players from Florida State, California, LSU, Baylor, Boise State, Texas, Rutgers and South Carolina.
Among that group was one player from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, a Division III school that plays in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference: Thurgood Dennis, dubbed the fastest returning player in all of college fo

No. 22 Boise State Broncos season preview: Broncos favorite to win the Mountain West Conference

No. 22 Boise State Broncos (11-2) Coach Chris Petersen (seventh season, 84-8 at Boise and overall)Returning Starters: 12, 5 offense, 5 defense, 2 special teamsRecruiting Rank: 53Strength of Schedule: 83 Boise State looks to once again continue the success that has been established under head coach Chris Petersen. The Broncos are the only FBS program that has 10-or-more wins in each of the last seven seasons and that is largely due to Petersen, the winningest active coach in the FBS. The schedule is definitely backloaded for Boise State, who were co-champions of the league last year, along with Fresno State and San Diego State. Each team posted 7-1 conference marks in the final year of the league as a 10-team conference. Boise closes its 2013 slate with four straight conference road games against four of the league’s better teams - Colorado State, Fresno State, San Diego State and Utah State. The last two games in particular could go a long way in deciding who plays for the confere...

Clark headlines hodgepodge offensive line

Everybody at Broncos headquarters is operating under the assumption Pro Bowl left tackle Ryan Clady will return to Denver in time for training camp with a new contract and a clean bill of health in hand.

Everybody except for Chris Clark, that is.

The fifth-year journeyman tackle is preparing as though he'll be the one protecting Peyton Manning's blindside on the Broncos' upcoming Super Bowl-or-bust tour.

Clady has stayed away from Dove Valley since January while rehabbing from offseason shoulder surgery and angling for a new long-term contract while his $9.828 million free agent tender gathers dust instead of his signature.

Vice President John Elway is on the record stating he wants to sign Clady to a long-term deal this summer, and coach John Fox said Wednesday, ''I'm sure that'll all get worked out and I anticipate seeing him in camp.''

All indications, he added, are that he's progressing as expected in his rehab. The Broncos, though, have yet to get a firsthand

The Boise State Broncos football team have risen from mid-major to BCS buster over the last decade. They’ve garnered so much hype that they’ve even gotten their own Pro Combat uniforms from Nike. The logo that was used on the helmet of their Pro Combat uniforms is now the new logo that will be featured at midfield of their smurf turf field.
For comparison sake, here is the old logo:
Definitely an upgrade.

Ukwuachu, who will sit out the 2013 season and have two seasons of eligibility remaining, played in 13 games during his redshirt season for the Broncos and had 35 tackles, 4.5 sacks and seven tackles for loss. The 6-4, 222-pounder also had three fumble recoveries.

Boise State's Joe Southwick is no Kellen Moore, and that is OK

Photo: USA Today Sports

Joe Southwick stepped foot in to a nearly impossible situation in 2012. After four consecutive years of Kellen Moore directing the offense on the field for the Boise State Broncos, rewriting record books along the way, Southwick was charged with replacing one of the all-time greats in school history. It is an unenviable task to have to be the next guy in line following an all-time legend of sorts, but as so many in college football have done before, Southwick was given that responsibility.

Boise State had built a reputation for high-scoring offenses over when Moore was the quarterback. Matching those numbers seemed unlikely for anyone given the roster turnover at Boise State in 2012, but Southwick became a scapegoat of sorts for what appeared to be a struggling offense, with some Boise State loyalists going so far as suggesting Southwick just is not the right guy to lead the Broncos offense. But is that really fair?

Mountain West Preview: Between Boise State and a final run at the BCS

The Boise State Broncos will begin the 2013 season exactly as they finished the 2012 season: a date with Washington.

The Huskies, the erstwhile leviathan of the top left quadrant of the country, have ceded that throne in the past decade to both Pac-12 foe Oregon and, of course, Boise State. Kudos to Huskies coach Steve Sarkisian for agreeing to this August 31 season opener, in Seattle, against Chris Petersen’s crew. In seven seasons in Idaho’s state capitol, Petersen is 84-8 (.913). Knute Rockne, who has the best Division I winning percentage of all time (.881), was on the job for 13 seasons in South Bend before a plane crash claimed his life.

True, Boise State does not play in the Southeastern Conference. But Petersen, who will not turn 49 until the day after the Broncos visit Utah State (Oct. 12), is in the midst of an historic tenure. Last season was a down campaign for Boise State as it lost two games by a total of six points to finish 11-2. In the year 1 A.K. (After Kellen)...

OKG’s is the Star of Boise State Football

We’ve seen over the years many players go before their time and it wasn’t to an early NFL draft pick.

For the most part outside of the program no one really knows why other than the typical team announcement “breach of team rules”. With the shocking recently announcement of Sam Ukwuachu departure one can be left struggling to understand what’s going on in Boise when you consider all the news surrounding the Basketball team and their shop lifting crimes.

I’m a man of some age and I know some of you are sometimes miffed by my loyalty and understanding of some of these events and the players involved. Especially when you consider what I have done for a living for most of the last 20 years loss prevention. Now I’m not going to write a ten page essay on the phycology of why people steal and who does, but what I will say is this most of you reading this have stolen something in your life and many of still do. I’m not trying say this has anything to do with Sam’s...

Boise State: That's our $5 million

Boise State is asking a judge to declare that the school does not owe a $5 million penalty for cancelling its entry into the Big East Conference last year.

The university announced Monday it had filed a lawsuit in 4th District Court in Boise after a representative of what will soon be the American Athletic Conference said the conference intended to sue the university.

Boise State signed an agreement in December 2011 to join the Big East in 2013 for football. However, the school says the conference lost three-quarters of its membership over the next year, failed to add more football schools west of the Mississippi and lost its guaranteed spot in BCS bowls. In December, Boise State opted to stay in the Mountain West Conference for all sports.

University President Bob Kustra argues the conference the Broncos agreed to join no longer exists.

''Boise State entered into that agreement in good faith and with a great degree of optimism, but the conference we agreed to join simply no longer exists,'&#3

Boise State adds years, money to Rice contract

Boise State has rewarded coach Leon Rice for posting consecutive 20-win seasons and getting the Broncos to the NCAA tournament last month.

Athletic director Mark Coyle announced a contract extension and pay hike for the third-year coach Wednesday. Rice and the university have agreed in principle to a two-year extension and a $43,000 bump in pay next year, raising his 2014 salary to $482,110. The deal calls for a 3 percent annual raise through 2018.

The Broncos finished 21-11 this season and earned the team's first ever at-large berth to the tournament. Hired in 2010, Rice has won 50 games faster than any coach in school history and the success of the team in the last two years has elevated attendance to its highest mark in more than a decade.
