Mountain West Preview: Looking at the league's star players

While the Mountain West doesn’t have a true National Championship contender like the American (Louisville) or a catchy nickname like #MACtion, make no mistake, there will be plenty of quality football played when this conference’s teams take the field in 2013. Along with three clubs which finished the 2012 season with at least nine wins (Boise State, Fresno State and San Diego State) the league will also welcome two 11-win clubs from the WAC, when Utah State and San Jose State join the fold in 2013.

It also means that there will be no shortage of talented players.

As we did with our American preview two weeks ago, let’s take a look at the players you need to watch out for entering the 2013 Mountain West season.

The Mountain West Preview: Newcomers vs. old standbys dot Ten biggest games in MWC

It's Mountain West week, you know, the conference that's home to eternal underdog and BCS buster Boise State. Yesterday we gave you a look at what went down in the conference last season. One could say it will it be hard to top the craziness that happened in 2012 for the Mountain West to say the least.

Today though, we take a look forward and while the Mountain West has some new parts to it, those of us who are old enough to remember what the WAC used to be like have a very strange feeling we've seen this makeup of the conference before.... Yep, what was old is now new again and in total all twelve members of the Mountain West at one point in time were members of the WAC... Including six who were there when the bitter split that caused the creation of the Mountain West happened to begin with.

All of this adds up to old foes becoming new again for a whole new generation of students and fans. Good football may also be the result with the likes of San Jose State and Ut...

Steelers LB Chris Carter Enters Third Season Surrounded By Question Marks

For the first three games of the 2012 season, the Pittsburgh Steelers were forced to start linebacker Chris Carter on the right side due to both James Harrison and Jason Worilds not being fully healthy. It was a golden opportunity for the 2011 fifth-round draft pick out of Fresno State, but unfortunately not one that he took good advantage of.

Carter, who received quite a bit of work during training camp last year as starter with Harrison and Worilds on the active PUP list, played 103 snaps in the Steelers first three games, but only managed to register 6 total tackles and never really threatened Read more [...]

Year Of The College Quarterback: 20 To Watch in 2013

#1.) A.J. McCarron/ Alabama/ 6’4″, 210 : (25-2) as a starter for the Crimson Tide and with athletes all-around once again, look out for McCarron to have another great season as the SEC’s most polished passer. McCarron has the ability to make most throws, but his mechanically polished game and has natural leadership skills are going to drive scouts crazy.

2.) Johnny Manziel/ Texas A&M/ 6’1″, 200: Faster than lightning and with great zip on his ball, Manziel returns in my opinion as the frontrunner for the Heisman trophy once again; if he can keep his focus and off the field antics to a minimum.

3.) Teddy Bridgewater/ Louisville/ 6’3″, 218: Tougher than nails, a cannon for an arm and with great mobility, Bridgewater could be the nations best QB period, after what I witnessed during the Sugar Bowl. Bridgewater has great size and is extremely accurate with his fluid throwing motion.

4.) Aaron Murray/ Georgia/ 6’1″, 210: Probably my personal favorite of the bunch due to hi...

Rouse looking to make Cleveland his home

BEREA, Ohio - Rookie minicamp is about opportunity, and that's why Robbie Rouse is here.
Now, Rouse has to make enough plays to stay around longer.
He's listed as a tryout player on the Browns minicamp roster, but the former Fresno State running back is in Berea this weekend because the Browns plan to sign him to a contract.
After trying out last weekend with the Minnesota Vikings, Rouse was going to participate in another tryout this weekend with the Dallas Cowboys. But his agent called and said the Browns were offering a chance that included a deal, and Rouse didn't need to think twice.
"I just showed up ready to work," Rouse said on Friday. "I've never been here; never even been to this part of the country. All you can ask for in my spot is a chance, and I'm glad to have one."
Rouse, who's generously listed at 5'6, ran for 4,168 yards and 33 touchdowns over his last three college seasons. He was a late add to the Senior Bowl last January and participated in t

Jim Sweeney, Former Fresno State Football Coach, Dies at 83

Legendary Fresno State football coach Jim Sweeney died on Friday night. He was 83.
Sweeney coached the Bulldogs from 1976 to 1996 with a short layover at the pro level in 1978 and 1979. He led Fresno State to a 144-74-3 record. The School announced his passing, but provided no further details.
“Most of what our football program has accomplished in recent years was clearly made possible by the path that Coach Sweeney blazed for Fresno State football throughout his two decades of leadership,” athletic director Thomas Boeh said. “He was a man of vision, toughness and character who led the Bulldogs to new heights and went on to become a national icon.”
Sweeney was also led Montana State and Washington State during his 46-year football coaching career. He was 201-153-4 overall.

Fresno State also adding a white helmet in 2013

Next up in the white helmet craze is Fresno State. In a design move that appears to fall in line with the thinking of Texas Tech and Nevada, Fresno State will be showing off a white helmet as an alternate look in 2013. Have a look…
Fresno Sate is adding a white helmet to their 2013 uniform line-up, it seems.
But wait, there’s more to the potential 2013 Fresno State uniform line-up…
According to the Reddit user who shared these images, Fresno State will also be adding a sort of throwback helmet to the fold. This helmet would write out the word “Bulldogs,” as seen in this image. Also, an all-black alternate uniform set could also be in the works.
From Reddit user “catbirdofdoom”:
Apparently, Fresno State has been showing 2013 alternate uniforms to recruits. In the images I posted you can see that a white helmet has been added to the current all-white away uniform. The center-right photo in the second image shows a throwback with “Bulldogs” written in script on the helmet, [seen in pre...
