Draft Zone Spotlight: Darryl McBride Jr., OLB/SS, University of Hawaii
This kid should be nicknamed MOTOR, because he possesses it every snap. McBride is super fun to watch because of his high powered attitude. I love watching McBride play the game, because you can sense the love for the game. You can watch the game and know which player is McBride. He sticks out like a sore thumb on the field because of his outstanding play. I love the tenacity and this kid would defnitely be someone I bring in for my team if I was a GM.

How many teams were recruiting you coming out of high school and how did you make your decision?
No schools recruiting me for football coming out of high school so I decided to take the junior college route and chose Hawaii over a few other schools. Reasons for me choosing Hawaii was because of the defensive back coach Rich Miano, he once played for the Eagles and me and him connected instantly, he knew the type of society I was raised in from playing in Phi...

Cal Poly 64, Hawaii 61

Chris Eversley scored 25 points and Cal Poly withstood a late comeback attempt by Hawaii for a 64-61 victory on Saturday night.

Reese Morgan added 10 points for the Mustangs (15-12, 10-6 Big West), who denied Hawaii two potential game-tying 3-pointers in the final seconds.

Isaac Fotu had 17 points, Vander Joaquim 15 points and 10 rebounds and Hauns Brereton 13 points for the Rainbow Warriors (17-12, 10-7), who trailed by 13 points with just under five minutes remaining.

Two 3-pointers by Jace Tavita and another by Brandon Jawato helped Hawaii get within 64-61. The Warriors had two possessions to tie, but Brereton's 3-pointer with 12 seconds to play rimmed out, and - after Cal Poly twice missed the first attempt of a one-and-one - Jawato dribbled in search of an open shot but did not get a 3-point attempt off before the buzzer sounded.

The Mustangs led 27-25 at halftime and shot 66.7 percent (16 for 24) from the floor in the second half.

Eversley made 11 of his 18 shots for the game.

Hawaii 71, North Dakota 66

Brandon Spearman scored 19 points and Hawaii narrowly avoided blowing another big lead Tuesday, holding on to beat North Dakota 71-66.

Spearman hit three of Hawaii's nine 3-pointers. Freshman Isaac Fotu added 17 points off the bench for the Rainbow Warriors (4-1), who bounced back from Friday's loss to Illinois on a buzzer-beating 3-pointer in overtime.

In that game, Hawaii coughed up a 16-point second-half lead. This one nearly followed the same script, as the Warriors led by as many as 23 before North Dakota (1-3) pulled within 69-66 on Josh Schuler's three-point play with 1:06 to play. But with a chance to tie, UND's Jamal Webb turned the ball over, and Spearman's two free throws sealed the victory.

Schuler and Aaron Anderson led North Dakota with 17 points apiece.

The victory was Hawaii's first over North Dakota, which had won the only previous meeting between the schools, in 1949.

Several Hawaii players were taken to the hospital with neck injuries tonight

Per ESPN, Team officials said initial X-rays performed on two Hawaii players taken to the hospital because of possible neck injuries were negative. The defensive tackles were taken to a Provo hospital after being injured in apparent helmet-to-helmet collisions on back-to-back series during the first quarter against BYU on Friday night.
Backup Geordon Hanohano was the first loaded on a backboard and carted off the field with what Hawaii officials said was a neck injury, but not before flashing the “shaka” — the Hawaiian sign for hang loose. He reportedly complained of numbness. The second player, starting defensive tackle Siasau Matagiese, was injured on the Warriors’ next defensive series. After a lengthy delay, he too was placed on a backboard and carted off. He also managed to signal to the crowd with his thumb and little finger.
Also, BYU officials confirmed starting running back Michael Alisa broke his right forearm in the first quarter. He finished with two carries for 12 yards...

Hawaii Warriors 2012: Game-by-Game Predictions

Predictions are always dicey, especially when a new coach with a brand new system takes over a program.

Norm Chow has done that this year in Hawaii and there is both considerable buzz and excitement about the upcoming season.

But considering the tough slate the Warriors have ahead of them, is it warranted? Lets take a look at each game.

Sept. 1: Hawaii at USC
Going to the Coliseum to face the Trojans is a daunting task even for perennial powerhouses. Yet this is where the Warriors will begin their season.

Led by quarterback Matt Barkley, the Trojans will be gunning for nothing less than a national championship.

Expect the Warriors to keep it close early as USC sees what schemes Norm Chow has put into place. UH will be trailing by halftime, but still very much in the game.

However, USC will make adjustments and by mid-third quarter their bigger, stronger, and faster athletes will begin to pull away. With Trojan title aspirations, the Warriors can expect no mercy. USC will be ...

Hawaii Warriors: Problems in Paradise

The 2012 Warriors will be sporting a whole new look this year. The question will be what form will it take?

With new head coach Norm Chow at the helm, the state of Hawaii has its first head coach who was born in the Islands. After thirty plus years as an offensive coordinator, can Norm Chow first stint ever as a head coach be successful?

The challenges are daunting and a new, tougher conference and a brutal pair of away games, ensures him and his players a baptism by fire.

Offense

Coach Chow finally, and somewhat belatedly, pulled the trigger on his starting quarterback. What was unexpected was that it was junior transfer Sean Schroeder from Duke who was made first team.

Freshman sensation Jeremy Higgins was named his backup and David Graves was named third string quarterback, and will also be taking snaps at receiver. Graves was philosophical about the decision saying, "Anything to help the team."

With powerful running back Joey Isoefa and seven talented wide receiv...

NBA Drat Blog Interview with Joston Thomas

A little lesson for the fans and media out there when it comes to draft coverage – Because you see a name on the list of players who declare for the NBA Draft that you haven’t heard of, it doesn’t make their decision a “mistake” or “head-scratcher.” Unfortunately, a variety of things often prevent players from getting the exposure that many others do. Teams on the West Coast will often discuss what is known as “East Coast bias” in media coverage. But what if you are even further west than the West Coast? If you haven’t had the opportunity to watch Hawaii’s Joston Thomas play, I recommend you find some film of his game immediately. Thomas is athletic, has a NBA-body, and has shown a great ability to score and rebound, while mostly playing far from what would be his natural position. When you take time to put all of this together, it becomes quite clear why Thomas would make the decision to enter the NBA Draft, no matter if you don’t know him or aren’t impressed by his numbers. ...

Hawaii needs to beat BYU for berth in Hawaii Bowl

Hawaii's disappointing season all comes down to one game.

The Warriors (6-6) need to knock off Armed Forces Bowl-bound Brigham Young (8-3) on Saturday night to earn a berth in their hometown Hawaii Bowl on Dec. 24.

''This is what everyone dreams of growing up, ending the season with a must-win,'' Hawaii safety Richard Torres said. ''Playing in a big game against a great opponent, back's against the wall, everything on the line, do or die. It'll bring out the best in everybody.''

Hawaii could be playing for more than just a bowl. With attendance plummeting and fan discontent growing, ending the year with a losing record and failing to reach the postseason would only heighten calls for Warriors coach Greg McMackin to be fired with a year left on a contract that pays him $1.1 million a season.

It's a stark contrast to the start of the season, which was filled with optimism. Coming off a 10-win season, Hawaii was favored to win the Western Athletic Conference in its final year in the league before jumping to the Mountain West Conference. Senior quarterback Bryant Moniz was being touted as a Heisman Trophy candidate.

The season ended up being marred by poor and inconsistent play that resulted in losses to UNLV, San Jose State, Fresno State and Utah State.

But a win against an old rival could give Hawaii the holiday lift it needs and help preserve McMackin's job.

''If this team really loves each other as much as it says it does, then it should mean everything to them,'' Hawaii offensive coordinator Nick Rolovich said. ''Nothing else should matter right now.''

BYU, meanwhile, has won seven of its last eight games. During that stretch, the Cougars have breezed through the WAC, beating Utah State, San Jose State, Idaho and New Mexico State.

The Warriors will have to slow down Cougars playmaker Cody Hoffman. This season, Hoffman has 45 catches for 698 yards and six touchdowns to go along with 778 kickoff return yards and one touchdown.

It's possible BYU and Hawaii both could use two quarterbacks in the game.

The Cougars' Riley Nelson was knocked out of a game Nov. 12 against Idaho with lung and rib injuries, and didn't play the following week against New Mexico State. In his absence, Jake Heaps went a combined 36 of 56 for 423 yards and six touchdowns. The Cougars won both games by scores of 42-7.

BYU had a bye last week, and Nelson has been cleared to play against Hawaii.

Only LSU and Alabama have allowed fewer passing touchdowns than the Cougars this season.

The Cougars, ranked 17th in the nation in total defense, will be looking to slow Hawaii's run-and-shoot offense, which is still trying to deal with the loss of Moniz, who was injured in the game at Nevada last month.

The Warriors started Shane Austin on Nov. 19 against Fresno State, but he was replaced by David Graves in the second quarter with Hawaii down 17-0. The Warriors rallied to take a lead, but Fresno State won 24-21. In last week's 35-23 victory over Tulane, Graves started but was replaced late in the third quarter by Austin, who finished 9 of 10 for 98 yards.

Graves will start against BYU.

''They both better be ready,'' Rolovich said. ''We'll do whatever we have to do to win this game.''

Austin said he looks forward to facing BYU.

''They've been a good program for years. They have a great record and they've beaten some good teams,'' he said. ''We're kind of like being the underdog. It gives us extra motivation.''

BYU leads the all-time series with Hawaii 19-8, including an 11-8 record in Honolulu. BYU was in the Western Athletic Conference from 1962 through 1999 before leaving to form the Mountain West Conference. Hawaii has been a member of the WAC since 1979.

BYU and Hawaii last met in 2002, with the Cougars winning 35-32 in Provo, Utah. The last time they met in Honolulu was 2001, with Hawaii winning 72-45. In that contest, the teams' current offensive coordinators - Rolovich and BYU's Brandon Doman - were the starting quarterbacks.

BYU and Hawaii will play again in 2012 and 2013.
