NBA Draft Blog Interview with Kyle Barone

So much about the discussion regarding players and the NBA Draft revolves around skill. Yet, so many have similar skills, it becomes more about those who take advantage of the opportunity given to them. You need to want it more than other players you compete against. Not all have that perspective, but throughout your college career, you can come to gain it. Idaho’s Kyle Barone is one who has learned to make the most of the opportunities given to him.

Barone’s game started to transform once he got settled in at Idaho. “I was able to become more of a low-post threat,” said Barone. “The system we ran at Idaho needed me to be able to score from the low block.”

While his overall game continued to improve, it all seemed to come together in Barone’s senior year, when he averaged 17 points and 10 rebounds per game while winning WAC Player of the Year. “It was like all of the hard work and determination paid off at last,” said Barone.

What makes Barone’s senior year mo...

The American Preview: Road Trip Distances for Each School

It’s a fact of life in any conference: You’re going to have to travel at some point.

Now, some leagues have teams that don’t travel much at all save for the conference away games. Those teams are big enough that they don’t have to hit the road, or are very selective about the non-conference tilts they do play away from home.

But with this latest round of realignment, some teams are going to have to travel more—a lot more.

This is the case with the American Athletic Conference. The American stretches from Connecticut to Texas, and covers eight states currently. It is spread out almost as far for football as the old Western Athletic Conference was.

Here at Crystal Ball Run, we wanted to see who has to travel the farthest this season? Which school’s fans might be racking up the frequent flier miles to go see their team? So we looked at the schedules for everyone, pulled out their road games and used mapping software to cover the distance from campus to the opponent’s st...

BYU vs. Idaho Post Game Thoughts and Analysis

There is a lot to talk about after the Brigham Young Cougars beat the Idaho Vandals 52-13. Great win for the seniors, and a historic game from a scoring standpoint. One thing I forgot to add is that I am still very upset that Idaho got that last field goal. Very bad way to end the game for the Cougars, even if that was the second team punt return unit.Enjoy! The Editor appreciates all feedback.
Idaho dismisses QB Blackman

The University of Idaho says two football players have been dismissed for violating team rules and a third has been suspended for violating athletic department policy.

The school announced Sunday that quarterback Dominique Blackman and linebacker Conrad Scheidt have been kicked off the team. The school also says tight end Taylor Elmo has been suspended.

Blackman started seven games this season for the Vandals, passing for 230 yards a game with nine touchdowns. Scheidt started three games, making nine solo tackles and assisting on 14 others.

Athletic director Rob Spear fired coach Robb Akey on Oct. 21, a day after the Vandals lost 70-28 to Louisiana Tech and fell to 1-7. Idaho is coming off an off week, with its next game Saturday at home against San Jose State.

Idaho WR fatally shot in Los Angeles

A 22-year-old University of Idaho football player was fatally shot at a weekend party in Los Angeles, authorities said.

Detectives were trying to determine a motive and a suspect in the early Sunday death of Ken McRoyal of Carson, who was killed while attending a photo shoot to promote a new woman's clothing line, police said. A second man was wounded and treated at a hospital.

''Whether he was invited or not, we don't know,'' said Detective Victor Marin.

Early police reports indicated McRoyal was shot when he got into an argument with a group, but Marin said investigators hadn't confirmed whether there was any altercation.

Investigators planned to interview the 40 to 50 people who attended the party, Marin said.

The event was held at the Brewery Arts Complex, a former Pabst Blue Ribbon brewery near the Los Angeles River that has been converted into artists' lofts and is frequently used as a filming location.

McRoyal, a wide receiver, caught six passes for 35 yards in eight games for the university in 2011. He was a native of New Orleans and moved with his family to California after Hurricane Katrina.

He attended high school in suburban Carson and transferred from El Camino College in Torrance to the University of Idaho last fall. Idaho coach Robb Akey said Sunday that McRoyal's loss is devastating.

''We've lost a brother, a teammate, a family member,'' Akey said. ''But, more importantly, a momma lost her son today.''

Akey told The Spokesman-Review the last time he spoke with McRoyal, he shared his excitement about earning a scholarship for the 2012 season after walking on a year earlier. He played the two previous seasons at El Camino Junior College.

''I can still see the smile on his face,'' Akey said.

Akey called the team captains and assistants notified the other players of the shooting.

''They're our kids, our family, however you want to (put) it,'' Akey said. ''Having a family, I've got to make sure they all know we love them. And I'm so glad I was able to tell K that when he left town - those were probably the last words out of my mouth when I said goodbye to him.''

Idaho quarterback Dominique Blackman said McRoyal was a cousin and best friend.

''They took somebody who meant a lot to our family and not only to our family but to a lot, to college football, to this community,'' Blackman told KCAL-TV.

Blackman said McRoyal texted him just minutes before the shooting.

''I was the last person he talked to ... telling me where he's at and saying to come to Hollywood, but I wasn't there for him. I told him I couldn't find a ride.''

Report: Idaho WR may have been killed

A 22-year-old man -- believed to be a football player at the University of Idaho -- was shot dead Sunday morning at a party in Los Angeles, KCBS-TV reported.

The shooting occurred around 1:30am local time at the Brewery Lofts in Lincoln Heights, authorities said.

Witnesses told KCBS they woke up to hear two gunshots followed by a volley of six more. The 22-year-old was transported to a local hospital, where he was declared dead. Another man was wounded and transported to a Long Beach Hospital. His condition was not known.

While authorities have not yet named the man who died, his friends said on social media networks that it was Ken McRoyal -- a wide receiver for the Vandals who previously played for El Camino Junior College in Los Angeles.

The school confirmed on Sunday that McRoyal had died, but did not provide any further details.

"It's a devastating loss," coach Robb Akey said in a statement. "We've lost a brother, a teammate, a family member. But, more importantly, a momma lost her son today.

"All of our prayers go to the family -- that they can be strong in their healing from this tragedy."

McRoyal, a native of New Orleans, moved with his family to California following Hurricane Katrina.

No arrests have been made. Authorities say a verbal dispute led to the shooting, but do not believe it was gang-related.

Seahawks Select Idaho LB Korey Toomer (Rd.5, No.154)

With the 154th overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, the Seahawks select Korey Toomer, OLB (Idaho). Athletic linebacker with tremendous upside. Fluid and smooth moving in every direction of the field, quickly changes direction and covers a lot of area. Breaks down well, uses his hands to protect himself and displays the ability to get through blocks and make plays up the field. Remains disciplined with assignments, recognizes coverage responsibilities and can run downfield with tight ends. Solid open-field tackler who effectively makes plays in space.
THE UNIVERSITY OF IDAHO VANDALS closed Spring Camp with the annual Silver & Gold Spring Game in the iconic Kibbie Dome. It was a short scrimmage in front of a small, but spirited, crowd. The defense ruled, highlighted by an interception by RS Freshman QUINTON BRADLEY (6-3, 239), a defensive end from San Antonio, TX. Much of the depth chart was solidified, but quarterback remains a question.

Julius Mays scored 28 points, including a 3-pointer at the buzzer in overtime, sealing Wright State's 80-78 win over Idaho on Tuesday night.

Mays' big shot marked the last of four lead changes in the final 21 seconds of overtime, and came just a moment after Dazmond Starke's layup put Idaho up 78-77 with 4 seconds remaining. Mays scored six of the Raiders' 11 points in OT.

The Raiders (5-8) outscored the Vandals 11-9 in the extra frame.

Wright State outscored Idaho 37-36 in the second half, but couldn't close the Vandals out thanks to Landon Tatum's own 3-pointer at the buzzer that sent the contest into overtime.

Idaho led 33-32 at halftime.

Reggie Arceneaux added 19 points for Wright State.

Kyle Barone had a double-double to lead Idaho (7-5), scoring 21 points and grabbing 11 boards.
