Quinton “The General” Patton could benefit from injury to Michael Crabtree

Going into this offseason, the 49ers pick of Quinton Patton in the fourth was more of a luxury pick, but the Louisiana Tech wide out could be getting a bigger role. Today in OTA’s, veteran wide out Michael Crabtree injured his Achilles tendon muscle and was immediately under surgery to get it fixed. The problem is that the injury is going to sideline him for quite some time and could eventually land him on the IR for the season. That would be a huge blow to the receiving core of the Niners, but no need to fear, because “The General” is here.
Quinton Patton was rated as a 2nd round pick by many draftniks and when drafted by the 49ers seemed like more of a depth move. Well today the Niners didn’t waste anytime, as they hurried up to lock down the wide receiver. He signed his contract moments after Crabtree went down, and is now in the running for replacing him.
Patton will face up against Mario Manningham and former first rounder AJ Jenkins for the number two spot. You can assume...

49ers Select Louisiana Tech WR Quinton Patton (Rd.4, No. 128)

With the 128th overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, the 49ers select Louisiana Tech WR Quinton Patton. Patton has good height and a sturdy frame, which allows him to absorb punishment and fight through injuries to stay on the field. He displays the natural hands to snag balls outside of his frame and has a solid radius for a player his size. He is a savvy route runner that uses an excellent combination of foot quickness, explosion and physicality to run precise lines and consistently create separation. Against off coverage he eats up the gap quickly and does an excellent job of disguising his routes with subtle fakes before his cuts. He is an aggressive, instinctual runner after the catch and while not physically dominant, he is a competent blocker because of his consistent effort.

Why Quinton Patton Will Prove To Be Best WR Of 2013 Draft Class

In 1985, four wide receivers were taken in the first round of the NFL Draft. While no one could have known that some guy named Jerry Rice would turn out to be the greatest receiver in NFL history, the class of pass catchers turned out to be “average” at best. Al Toon, Eddie Brown and Jessie Hester did nothing to distinguish themselves as great players.Fast forward 28 years later. There are potentially five receivers who could hear their name called in the later part of the first round, early part of the second round of the 2013 Draft next week and the same question about who will separate themselves as an elite receiver can be asked again.Like many other sports writers, I cannot tell you who will be the best of this “average” lot.Based on the fact the list which includes names like Tennessee tandem Justin Hunter and Cordarrelle Patterson, Tavon Austin of West Virginia and Keenan Allen of California, could someone with not as much fanfare like Rice did not have coming out of a small ...

2013 NFL Draft: WR Quinton Patton Scouting Report

Quinton Patton, wide receiver out of Louisiana Tech, won't wow you with his numbers; he ran a 4.53 at the Combine. But his two seasons at LA Tech should be an indication of what he will do in the NFL.As a junior, he caught 11 touchdowns plus 1,202 yards receiving; as a senior, Patton increased his production to 1,392 yards and 13 touchdowns. The sky is the limit for this talented wideout. His 6', 204-pound frame is good for the position, but it is his attitude that beats opponents.Quinton Patton has good hands no matter where the ball is thrown, and beats most coverages, often gaining a step when it counts the most. He has a knack for bouncing off first contact and getting extra yards after the catch. He doesn't have pure breakaway speed, though he moves faster and jukes defenders in the open field. There is a lot of good talent in this WR draft class, but Patton belongs in the top 10 for sure. The only weakness I saw on video was not getting both feet down in bounds on tou...

Miami to No. 6, Florida at No. 11 in AP poll

Gonzaga, the small Northwest school that consistently delivers big NCAA tournament wins, is on top of The Associated Press' Top 25 for the first time.

Riding the best record in Division I at 29-2, the Bulldogs took advantage of Indiana's loss to Minnesota last week and switched places with the Hoosiers, advancing from No. 2 and moving comfortably into the No. 1 spot Monday.

The Spokane, Wash., school best known for Bing Crosby's croons and John Stockton's passes received 51 first-place votes from the 65-member national media panel, 44 more than Indiana.

Gonzaga becomes the 57th school to be ranked No. 1 since the AP poll began in January 1949. The Bulldogs are the fifth school to hold the top slot this season.

Indiana was the preseason No. 1 and on top for nine other weeks. Duke, which was No. 1 for five weeks, and Louisville and Michigan, which were both on top for one week, were the other No. 1s this season.

Gonzaga reached No. 2 last week, at the time its highest ranking. After Indiana

No. 25 Louisiana Tech 88, San Jose St. 61

Raheem Appleby scored 16 points and No. 25 Louisiana Tech extended the nation's longest winning streak to 18 games Saturday night, clinching at least a share of its first Western Athletic Conference championship with an 88-61 victory over San Jose State.

Alex Hamilton and Jaron Johnson added 13 points apiece for the Bulldogs (26-3, 16-0 WAC), who can wrap up the outright regular-season title Thursday night with a win at New Mexico State.

It is the first conference crown for Louisiana Tech since its 1999 Sun Belt championship.

Xavier Jones led San Jose State (9-18, 3-13) with 14 points, while D.J. Brown and Chris Cunningham each had 10.

Louisiana Tech hit seven 3-pointers in the first half and used a 16-4 run to go ahead 29-12 en route to a 45-26 halftime lead. The Bulldogs held San Jose State to 33 percent shooting from the field in the opening 20 minutes and forced 12 turnovers.

Riding their sharp shooting from long range, the Bulldogs jumped out to a 10-2 lead on consecutive 3-pointers by Brandon G

Louisiana Tech running backs coach Pierre Ingram has agreed to do the same job for new coach Sonny Dykes at California.

Ingram served in the same role for Dykes at Louisiana Tech the last three seasons.

Dykes, who was hired earlier this month to lead the Golden Bears, says Ingram is one of the best young coaches in the country.

Dykes also announced Friday that Mark Tommerdahl has agreed to become the special teams coordinator and inside receivers coach at Cal. Tommerdahl spent the past four seasons at Louisiana Tech.

Dykes announced Tuesday that Tony Franklin will be the offensive coordinator for the Golden Bears and Rob Likens will coach receivers. Both men had the same role under Dykes at Louisiana Tech.

Louisiana Tech’s Sonny Dykes heading to California

Louisiana Tech won’t be playing in a bowl game with a 9 – 3 record, and now they are losing their head coach.
Tech coach Sonny Dykes is leaving the Bulldogs to coach at Cal. Dykes had an overall record of 22 – 15 with this season (2012) being his best yet. His Bulldogs also had the number 1 scoring offense in the country this season averaging 51 points a game.
Source confirms that #Cal will hire Sonny Dykes. School already has held a team meeting.
— Ron Kroichick (@rkroichick) December 5, 2012

He’ll be taking over a team that’s been trapped in mediocrity for the last 6 years. Former Bears coach Jeff Tedford had 2 10 win seasons in his 11 seasons with the Bears, and both were before 2007.
Dykes should be able to find the players he needs to run his high-powered offense out West, and since he spent 2 years at Arizona before heading to Louisiana Tech in 2010, he knows the landscape.
Meanwhile, back in Ruston, Derek Dooley is available for a job.

Louisiana Tech Snubbed Themselves, Will Miss Postseason

Before Kirk Herbstreit and the national media got their collective jockstraps in a bunch about Northern Illinois there was another BCS buster making blips on the national radar: Louisiana Tech. The Bulldogs ran their record to 9-1 and climbed as high as #20 in the polls behind the nation's highest scoring offense, with their only blemish through ten games coming because of a failed two-point conversion in a 59-57 loss to Johnny Heisman and Texas A&M.

The Bulldogs high-flying offense is exactly what we all love to see on display in the postseason...why else would we have 35 bowls...but thanks to finishing the season on a two-game skid Louisiana Tech will be watching the bowl games from home. Now the only question is why.

Louisiana Tech athletic director Bruce Van De Velde claims the Independence Bowl offered the Bulldogs a spot last week, but after receiving interest from the (higher profile) Heart of Dallas and Liberty Bowls Van De Velde balked at the Independence Bow...

College Football Bowl Games: What Really Happened With Louisiana Tech Bulldogs Not Going To A Bowl Game?

The Louisiana Tech Bulldogs finished the 2012 college football season with a 9-3 record. They ranked No. 1 in the country in points scored per game, averaging 51.5 points per contest on their way to playing some of the more exciting games of the season, including a 59-57 loss to Johnny Manziel and the Texas A&M Aggies. The Bulldogs ranked 4th in passing yards and 18th in rushing yards, but despite a 9-3 record in a year where many teams were either bowl ineligible or banned from postseason play, Louisiana Tech is not going to play in a college football bowl game this season.
So, what exactly happened?
That all depends on who you listen to, or who you are more apt to believe.
“Louisiana Tech was offered a bid Saturday to play Louisiana-Monroe,” an Independence Bowl official told ESPN. “They turned it down.” That would have been an interesting matchup, as the Warhawks of ULM also played some great games this season, including two overtime contests against the Arkansas Razorbacks a...

Louisiana Tech: Number one scoring offense, 9-3, and no bowl

The Louisiana Tech Bulldogs lead the nation in scoring offense averaging 51 points a game, they have an overall record of 9 – 3, and they will not be playing in a bowl game.
How does something like this happen to a team that lost only 3 games by a combined 17 points?
Louisiana Tech wasn’t left in the dark, they did receive an invite to the Independence Bowl, but had decided to see if any other bowls would invite them as the Independence is in Shreveport and that doesn’t exactly spell “bowl experience” for Bulldog fans or players.
“We asked the Independence Bowl to let the games play out because we were told by the Heart of Dallas Bowl and the Liberty Bowls that they were very interested in us,” said Van De Velde Sunday night. “They (the Independence Bowl reps) called us on Saturday and put a deadline on us. We thought there would be a spot open for us in one of those other bowls. We asked them to wait so we could vet out these other options, but they wouldn’t.”

No bowl for 9-3 Louisiana Tech

When is a bowl game worse than no bowl at all? Ask Louisiana Tech. The announcement of the Bulldogs’ fate, courtesy of La. Tech associate media relations director: Louisiana Tech has not been selected for a postseason bowl game. Nation's No. 1 offense ends year at 9-3. #WeAreLATech — Patrick Walsh (@LATechPWalsh) December 2, 2012 That’s a nice little plug for the Bulldogs’ offensive prowess, as well as an interesting spin on the story surrounding the team’s postseason, or lack thereof. In reality, the Independence Bowl in nearby Shreveport actually did select Tech. Tech athletic director Bruce Van De Velde told Bruce Feldman of CBSSports.com that Independence administrators set a deadline of Saturday for a commitment. The Bulldogs thought they had better options, so the Independence moved on, according to Van De Velde. But the juicier scuttlebutt in circulation: Tech refused to be matched up with in-state rival Louisiana-Monroe, which will instead square off again...

9-3 La. Tech not bowl-bound?

The 9-3 Louisiana Tech Bulldogs will not be going to a bowl this year. Not because they’re like Ohio State, a school serving a bowl ban for various and sundry rules violations. And they’re obviously bowl eligible, so what gives? According to the Associated Press, Louisiana Tech had a bowl offer from the Independence Bowl to play the Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks (a rival, I might add) on Saturday afternoon. However, the Bulldogs thought they had other opportunities with bowls that would, to be honest, pay more than the Independence Bowl (allegedly the Liberty Bowl), so they declined the invite to play a nationally-televised bowl game against a rival in their home state. But then Northern Illinois made the BCS, something Louisiana Tech should have predicted since they upset Kent State, who definitely would have made the BCS if they hadn’t been upset by NIU. Once Northern Illinois made the BCS, it pushed Oklahoma out and into another bowl. This, of course, ruined Louisiana Tech’s shot at ...

La Tech, 9-3, not going to a bowl game

Louisiana Tech, with a 9-3 record and the top-rated offense in the country, is not going to a bowl game.

La Tech athletic director Bruce Van De Velde tells the AP that Independence Bowl organizers offered a spot in their game on Saturday afternoon, but the Bulldogs had other possible options still available to them. Van De Velde says he asked the Independence Bowl for more time to make a decision, but was told by game organizers that they could not wait.

He says when Northern Illinois slipped into the Bowl Championship Series, taking a possible BCS bid away from Oklahoma, it started a domino effect that filled those other spots with Big 12 teams.

An Independence Bowl spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
