No. 73 Nevada Wolf Pack season preview

No. 73 Nevada Wolf Pack (7-6) Coach Brian Polian (first year head coach)Returning Starters: 11, 7 offense, 4 defense, 0 special teamsRecruiting Rank: 100Strength of Schedule: 50 Brian Polian, the son of former NFL executive Bill Polian, has some big shoes to fill by taking over a Nevada program that has become synonymous with former coach Chris Ault. In Ault’s 28 years in Reno, he won 233 games and led the Wolf Pack to 10 bowl games while overseeing the program’s transition from I-AA to the FBS ranks in the Western Athletic Conference and then the Mountain West. While Nevada did have four players at the NFL Combine last February and had two defensive backs drafted in April, the cupboard isn’t exactly bare for Polian. The former special teams coordinator at the University of Buffalo, Notre Dame, Stanford, and Texas A&M has the luxury of having junior quarterback Cody Fajardo returning. Fajardo is an early dark horse for the Heisman after throwing for 2,786 yards and 20 touchdo...

Must-see college football games: October

As the calendar turns to October and the weather begins to feel more like fall, the college football season is getting real interesting. It’s now when the conference slates take on a whole new meaning. Let’s dive into the heart of the season and get to as many games as possible as we continue our Ultimate Road Trip for 2013. Remember I have one simple, self-imposed rule: You can’t travel to the same stadium more than once. It’s a tough rule to follow. Last week I picked the must-see games for August and September, and next week I’ll have November and December. Week 6 Oct. 3: Texas at Iowa State As many times I have developed these ultimate road trips, not once has Ames, Iowa, made the cut. Give me a Thursday night game against the Longhorns and the 55,000-seat Jack Trice Stadium is on the board. The Cyclones could shake things up in the Big 12 as Paul Rhoads has built a solid football program. With Sam Richardson back at quarterback and James White at running back, ...

Q&A With Nevada Quarterback Cody Fajardo

Nevada junior quarterback Cody Fajardo is quietly following NFL sensation and former Wolf Pack quarterback Colin Kaepernick’s footsteps as an offensive threat, leader, and winner. The exciting dual-threat playcaller helped lead Nevada to a 7-5 regular season record and a bowl game berth. With the pistol as his weapon, Fajardo completed 67% of his passes for 2,786 passing yards and 20 passing touchdowns last season. Even more impressive was the damage he did on the ground, finishing with 1,121 yards and 12 touchdowns. The 6-2, 210-pounder is preparing for his third season as a starter, and his potential only grows as he has appropriately filled the shoes of a Super Bowl quarterback despite flying under the radar as a recruit.

I was lucky enough to talk to Cody and ask him a few questions about the team, himself, and his future.
Q: I’ve had some arguments over this before with some friends and I want to clear up the confusion once and for all....

Bills Select Nevada FS Duke Williams (Rd.4, No. 105)

With the 105th overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, the Bills select Nevada FS Duke Williams. Williams is an outstanding athlete for the safety position. He has the speed and range to make plays against the run on the boundary as well as run with every NFL TE and RB in man coverage. He displays loose hips, which allows him to change directions fluidly to stay with his man in space. When playing the run he flashes an explosive closing burst, which puts him in position to make plays at the LOS when he takes proper angles of pursuit.

Nevada Wolfpack Football: Chris Ault Retiring After Inventing Pistol Offense

Chris Ault, head football coach of the Nevada Wolfpack, is retiring after 28 seasons as the team’s head coach. Not only will he go down as one of the greats to ever roam the sidelines of college football, but he is also credited as being the inventor of the Pistol Offense.
Ault is stepping down after nearly three decades leading the Wolfpack, accumulating a record of 233-109-1. Ault led the Pack to five consecutive winning seasons and only one losing season of conference play since 1982 as well as an appearance in this season’s New Mexico Bowl. Unfortunately for Ault and the Wolfpack, they could not hold a late lead and lost the game to the Arizona Wildcats, 49-48.
Ault is best known for his impact on college football, but most notably as being credited as the inventor of the Pistol offense that has spread all over college football and even made its way to the NFL this season. Although it has spread in popularity, as well as being utilized by many more teams, opponents have not figu...

2013 NFL Draft Preview: Jeff Nady, OT Nevada

by: Duke Manyweather
#78 Jeff Nady, OT Nevada
HGT: 6064 WGT: 290
Jeff Nady was named second team All-WAC after starting every game in 2011 at the Strong Tackle spot for the Wolfpack. Nady heads in to his senior season with 23 starts on his resume and is on the 1st team All-WAC preseason list.
PROS:
Nady has good size. Has nice long arms. Displays sneaky athleticism, moves well, and shows good foot work. Because of Nevada’s system, Nady flops back and forth between left and right tackle, this is important because he looks comfortable playing both tackle positions. Plays with emotion on film and at times shows a bit of a mean streak, which I like to see out of an offensive lineman. Gets off the ball well in the run game. Takes good angles when climbing to the next level of defenders. Shows he can get out in space on screens. Has a quick pass set and looks comfortable kick sliding. For the most part, shows patients in pass protection. When punch is on target, he stops defenders in th...

There are a lot of roads to the NBA. Players come from almost everywhere these days, and sometimes the road they take can tell you a lot about them, both as a player and as a person. Olek Czyz grew up across the street from the biggest basketball school in Poland. Every day as a kid, he would look at it and want to get in there and play. However, Czyz was not allowed to play until he reached the 4th grade. So, he settled for soccer in the meantime, but he kept waiting for that day when he would be let in to the school and play basketball. Finally, the 4th grade comes, Olek gets to play basketball for the first time, and with his love of the game, another road to the NBA begins Czyz came to the United States, settling in Reno, Nevada right before he was to start high school. As he adjusted to life and basketball in the US, he proved to be a natural at the game. His work and skill led to him earning a scholarship to Duke, but it didn’t prove to be the best place for him to co...

Nevada (7-5) vs Southern Miss (11-2) I'm not sure exactly what to expect from this game, except that Larry Fedora believes that Southern Miss should be playing in a BCS game (obviously). Fedora made the statement when a reporter asked him one of the dumbest questions I've heard asked of a head coach after knocking off one of the top dogs, Houston. It went something like this Reporter: How does it feel knowing you just cost your conference about 17 million dollars by knocking Houston out of the BCS. Fedora: (Stunned look...which quickly changed to anger) I believe we should be in the BCS. And that was that. Fedora has since, from an inside source, been forced out and into accepting the North Carolina Read the full article...

Dobrich, UNR face Southern Miss today in Hawaii

Jordan Dobrich's cleats appeared headed to the closet permanently following the conclusion of the Northern Section Division I championship football game in 2010.

Dobrich, a 2011 Paradise High graduate, wasn't on the radar of many college football recruiters until six months after Dobrich's high school finale against Foothill, when Nevada-Reno run-game coordinator and offensive line coach Cameron Norcross came calling to look at Paradise's 2012 recruits, Bobcats coach Rick Prinz said in an interview with the Paradise Post last May.

Once he learned of Dobrich's situation, Norcross allowed the then 6-foot-2, 220-pound bruising running back a chance to walk on to UNR and compete as a linebacker this season.

He did more than compete.

Dobrich earned one of only three or four spots that the Wolf Pack set aside for redshirt freshmen on the traveling team, an accomplishment that will enable Dobrich to make his college football postseason debut against Southern Miss at 5 p.m. PST today at the annual Hawaii Bowl in Honolulu.

"It's a huge honor, I came out in fall camp at the bottom of the totem pole, I was nothing ? just a freshman walk-on (while) all these other kids were on full scholarship," Dobrich said in a telephone interview with the Post last week. "I tried to absorb everything in the position meetings and pretty much just went out with that Paradise mentality and worked as hard as I could."

It paid off, he said, with the culmination being a trip to Hawaii to face the Golden Eagles of Southern Miss, who come in at 11-2 and ranked No. 22 in the country following a win over previously undefeated Houston in the Conference USA championship game. UNR enters today's game following a 7-5 season and runner-up finish in the Western Athletic Conference.

"It's going to be my first bowl game that I've been to in my entire life," Dobrich said. "It's going be a huge step for me."

Who knows, he might even get to play.

"I am second string weak outside linebacker (so) if someone goes down they're going to be looking at me and a couple of other guys to go in," Dobrich said. "We already had one of the traveling redshirts on offense burn his redshirt (year) and he's been playing ever since. If one guy goes down you never know when your number is going to get called."

Dobrich has prepared for this moment almost immediately after receiving the call from Norcross about the possibility of walking on to the UNR football team in 2011.

"I was training for a solid three or four months before I came out here and I really tried to carry that on in their program," he said.

Since becoming fully entrenched in the program, Dobrich has bulked up both his upper and lower body. Currently, the former Bobcat two-sport star is bench pressing 300 pounds and squatting 420.

"It's just the college football weight training program. If you go to a D-I school and you're religiously doing the workouts, then you are bound to get stronger and bigger, there's no doubt about it," Dobrich said. "In high school weight lifting always helps but I never really did it too much. I was always distracted by other things (like) football , school and just being in high school."

But now he realizes that lifting weights is a vital part of playing football .

"Lifting pays a huge contribution to what you can do on the field, I realize that now," Dobrich said. "You have to be in the weight room if you want to be successful on the football field."

UNR defensive coordinator Andy Buh said with five pounds of additional muscle each year, Dobrich will have completed the transformation from high school running back to collegiate linebacker.

"When it's all said and done he'll look pretty close to a prototypical guy," Buh said in a telephone interview with the Post on Thursday.

Buh actually likes the fact that Dobrich has never played linebacker before.

"He's just a raw piece of clay, we haven't had to break any bad habits," he said.

The way Dobrich is progressing in the UNR program, it's safe to say that the Paradise community may see him once again roaming the field on game day very soon.

"We are so excited about Jordan and how he contributed this year," Buh said. "He has a tremendous future."

Jeff Larson is the sports editor at the Paradise Post.

Sheraton Hawaii Bowl
Nevada Wolfpack vs. Southern Miss Golden Eagles
Hawaiian Airlines Field at Aloha Stadium (Honolulu, HI)
Website: www.sheratonhawaiibowl.com
TV: ESPN
Line: Southern Miss -6 ½
Two teams and programs that are in a bit of a state of flux match up in this one. For Nevada, it was a somewhat disappointing 7-5 campaign, as the Wolfpack spent most of the early part of the year trying to figure out how to replace their graduated, All-Planet quarterback Colin Kaepernick this year.
Meanwhile, Southern Miss had no such trouble during the regular season, ripping off 10 wins and a Conference USA Championship. But now they must deal with another sad reality: This is the last game as head coach at the school for Larry Fedora, before leaving afterward to take over at North Carolina.
As much as we know about these teams, their psyche is what will be most intriguing on Christmas Eve.

Nevada early signing period class

Rounding up the last few early signing period classes of the regional D1 programs, today is the posting of the Nevada Wolfpack. I include Nevada in this region because Northern Nevada is part of this territory for MLB scouts and there are quite a few players who go there from Northern CA.
Now, I don't know a bunch or even much about the Wolfpack class because like other programs that aren't high profile and don't generally recruit the "namebrand" players (because it proves to be a waste of time), I just haven't seem most of these players even though all except one are from California, five of them from Northern CA.
