New Mexico State expected to join Sun Belt

LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) -- New Mexico State is expected to announce that its football program has found a new home.

Sun Belt Conference and school officials say both sides are scheduled Wednesday to announce that the Aggies will accept an invitation to join the Sun Belt Conference in 2014. The move comes after the Western Athletic Conference gave up trying to field a football league in 2013.

New Mexico State played eight years in the WAC, and its football team will play as an independent in 2013.

Sun Belt Conference Commissioner Karl Benson will hold a teleconference Wednesday, and school officials will hold a news conference afterward in the Pan American Center.

The Aggies, who went 1-11 last season, have not appeared in a bowl game since 1960.

New Mexico State loses 64-44 to Saint Louis

New Mexico State coach Marvin Menzies congratulated and consoled his players in the locker room following another season that included a Western Athletic Conference title and NCAA tournament berth.

Coping with another opening-game loss could take more time.

Bandja Sy had 17 points and nine rebounds in the lone bright spot of a horrendous shooting performance, and the 13th-seeded Aggies were eliminated in a 64-44 loss to fourth-seeded Saint Louis in the second round Thursday.

''I will say that my only disappointment is that we didn't get a chance to show who we really are,'' Menzies said. ''We didn't get a chance to play like the real WAC champions, and that's disappointing because it's such a special platform and a special stage to be on. And to not have the type of production that we would normally get from our guys is just frustrating.''

Saint Louis had its usual scrappy showing and a whole lot more.

Dwayne Evans had 24 points and six rebounds and Cody El

New Mexico State holds on to win WAC title

Sim Bhullar had 16 points, 15 rebounds and five blocked shots to lead New Mexico State to a 64-55 victory over UT Arlington on Saturday night for its second straight Western Athletic Conference championship.

Holding a 32-30 lead at halftime, New Mexico State (24-10) used a 19-8 run to open its biggest lead of the game, going up 51-38 with 11:27 left in the game.

The Aggies earned an automatic berth into the NCAA tournament by staving off a furious rally by the Mavericks, who used Kevin Butler's 3-pointer from the top of the key with 10:17 left to key a 15-5 run and pull within three points with 1:55 left in the game.

But Terrel de Rouen's soft jumper just outside the key with 1:17 remaining halted UT Arlington's surge and shifted the momentum back toward the Aggies, who closed the game on an 8-2 run to seal the win.

Daniel Mullings added 16 points and six rebounds for the third-seeded Aggies, while Bandja Sy contributed with 10 points and six boards.

Butler led the fourth-seed Mavericks (19-1

NMSU's Watson charged with assault

A suspended New Mexico State University basketball player has been arrested for assault.

Las Cruces police announced Wednesday that 22-year-old Tyrone P. Watson was charged with a third-degree felony count of aggravated battery causing great bodily harm.

Police say Watson beat a 19-year-old man, who was treated for facial fractures, a gash requiring 13 stitches and other cuts and bruises after the brawl at a party last month. Witnesses say Watson grabbed the man and punched him in the face because he was dancing with Watson's girlfriend.

He was later suspended from the team for allegedly violating rules on conduct.

Police say Watson was booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center with bond set at $5,000.

It was unclear if Watson has an attorney.

New Mexico State makes Martin official

New Mexico State has dropped the interim tag for coach Doug Martin.

Athletic director McKinley Boston said Friday that Martin was selected after a committee interviewed four candidates. Boston said he got the job because he wanted to return to Las Cruces and had ''overwhelming support.''

Martin, who was offensive coordinator, was promoted to interim coach last week after DeWayne Walker stepped down to take a position with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Martin takes over a struggling program that has not appeared in a bowl game since 1960.

Get your New Mexico State tickets! They're going fast!

Blauds broke the news that BC filled its open schedule slot with New Mexico State. The home game will be played in November and BC's home schedule now includes Army, Stony Brook and New Mexico State. That lineup is not going to help ticket sales. While I wanted BC to find a power program for the open spot or consider a road game payday, I can live with New Mexico State. If we have an outside chance at a bowl game, we need another W from somewhere. NMSU shouldn't be very good and by November we should have all of our transition issues resolved. You can't really spin any other benefits. There is no recruiting advantage nor media interest. But the ACC screwed up our schedule and Bates made the best of it.

Aggies can't keep up with Lark, BYU in loss

LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) -- James Lark completed 34 of 50 passes for 384 yards and six touchdowns, five to Cody Hoffman, as BYU overcame a slow start for a 50-14 victory over New Mexico State on Saturday.

After a scoreless tie at the end of the first quarter, New Mexico State (1-10) took a 7-0 lead on an 8-yard touchdown pass from Andrew Manley to Perris Scoggins with 12:55 left in the second quarter.

But BYU (7-5) came roaring back as Lark threw two scoring passes to Hoffman and one to J.D. Falslev to build a 20-7 halftime lead. Hoffman finished with 12 catches for 182 yards and Falslev had nine catches for 68 yards.

BYU sacked Manley five times. He completed just 13 of 24 passes for 158 yards and two TDs.

Georgia-Auburn: Well, if New Mexico State Can Do It…

Auburn offensive coordinator didn’t exactly plan for Bo Wallace to pass the ball as much as he did last Saturday, but the Aggies forced the issue…apparently. …Offensive coordinator Scot Loeffler said he planed to call designed runs against New Mexico State, but the Aggies’ defense forced Auburn to change its game plan. “The first half our mentality was to run some spread runs with him,” Loeffler said. “They overloaded one particular side, which took it away. So we countered with a counter play, but that wasn’t by design, we just had to adjust.” *stops typing…scratches head* You had to “adjust” to New Mexico State’s defense?…For real?
Louisville beat the 107-degree heat and a powerful New Mexico State team, opening the NCAA tournament with a 3-2 victory Friday night.

Justin Amlung gave up a first-inning run but settled in to throw six innings and allowing only one earned run as third-seeded Louisville (40-25) earned a spot in the winners' bracket in the regional.

Second-seeded New Mexico State had several opportunities to score. Bryan Karraker went 2 for 4 and catcher Zac Fisher had both RBIs for the Aggies (35-23). New Mexico State will have to battle through the losers' bracket and its pitching will be taxed after using six pitchers in the opening loss.

The Cardinals advanced to face the winner of Big 12 tournament champion Missouri and Pac-12 champion Arizona.

New Mexico State is the No. 1 seed i this week's Western Athletic Conference baseball tournament at HoHoKam Stadium in Mesa.

The Aggies (35-20, 11-7 WAC) tied Sacramento State (29-26) and Nevada (31-23) atop the WAC regular-season standings but earned the top seed based on head-to-head competition.

The tournament begins on Wednesday, but the Aggies have a first-round bye and won't play until 7 p.m. Thursday against the lowest-seeded winner of Wednesday's opening round.

Wednesday's schedule feature third-seeded Nevada against sixth-seeded Louisiana Tech (24-26) and fourth-seeded Hawai'i (30-23) vs. fifth-seeded Fresno State (25-25). The double-elimination tournament will conclude Saturday at 7 p.m. or Sunday at noon, with the winner earning a guaranteed berth in the NCAA Tournament.

Menzies planning to stay at New Mexico State

New Mexico State basketball coach Marvin Menzies has withdrawn his name as a candidate for the job at Colorado State.

Athletics Director Dr. McKinley Boston said Tuesday that he was ''pleased to hear'' about Menzies' decision and planned to sit down with him ''to review his current contract.'' He didn't elaborate or give a timetable for the meeting.

The Aggies were 26-10 this season. They won the Western Athletic Conference tournament title and a NCAA tournament berth, but lost to Indiana 79-66 in the second round of the South Regional on March 15.

Menzies has an 86-51 record in four seasons at New Mexico State. He's the second coach in the school's history to win 60 games in his first three seasons.

Aggies complete 2-game sweep of Wildcats

TUCSON, Ariz. New Mexico State completed a two-game sweep of fifth-ranked Arizona, defeating the Wildcats 13-8 on Wednesday with a barrage of 16 hits and nine walks issued by Arizona pitchers.

New Mexico State (17-8) led 7-1 after three innings, but Arizona (16-6) rallied with five runs in the fifth before the Aggies pulled away with four runs in the sixth.

The Arizona pitching staff issued a season-high nine walks and hit three batters. Starter Lucas Long (2-2) lasted just 1.2 innings and gave up five runs. Relievers Nick Cunningham, Vincent Littleman and Konner Wade combined to give up seven runs on seven hits and seven walks in 3.2 innings of work.

Freshman left-hander Tyler Crawford finally found the strike zone and quieted the Aggies bats with a strong 3.2 innings in which he gave up one run on four hits.

Arizona rallied briefly in the fifth, scoring two on a bases-loaded single by Seth Mejias-Brean and three on a double by pinch hitter Bobby Brown.

But the Aggies took advantage of Wade's wildn

New Mexico State rallies past Wildcats

TUCSON, Ariz. An uncharacteristically sloppy defensive effort in the eighth inning doomed the No. 5 Arizona baseball team as visiting New Mexico State scored the final four runs of the game en route to a 7-4 upset victory over the Wildcats on Tuesday night at Hi Corbett Field.

Arizona (16-5) held a 4-3 lead going to the seventh inning before New Mexico State (16-8) seized the momentum. The Aggies tied the game 4-4 in the inning and threatened to take the lead after loading the bases, but reliever Stephen Manthei induced an inning-ending double play to escape further trouble.

The Wildcats created their own trouble in the decisive eighth inning. Kurt Snowley singled off Manthei to open the inning, and reached second when shortstop Alex Mejia committed an error on a grounder by Cody Edwards.

Tanner Waite attempted to bunt the runners into scoring position, but first baseman Brandon Dixon elected to throw to third. His throw was wild and rolled down the left field-line, where Johnny Field misplayed the ball,

A look at New Mexico State by the numbers

With an assist from Ken Pomeroy, here’s a look at how the Aggies stack up in the tempo-free world:
OFFENSE
They are a good, but not great, offensive squad. Their adjusted offensive efficiency of 107.6 (points scored per 100 possessions adjusted for pace) ranks 67th. (For comparison, Indiana’s mark of 120.2 ranks fourth in the nation). This also is not an elite shooting team, as their eFG% of 50.7 ranks 102nd among Division I squads. The Aggies are also a bit sloppy with the ball (20.7 TO%, 198th), but this could be due a bit to their faster adjusted pace (70.9 possessions per game, 19th in the nation). But as has been noted before, this team does excel in two important four factor areas: Offensive rebounding and getting to the line. Only three teams in the country have rebounded a higher percentage of their misses than the Aggies, who have snagged an impressive 40.8 percent of their missed shots. And no team in the country has gotten to the line more this season, as the Aggies free ...
