The Outsiders Edge – May 22, 2013

Greetings Horns Fans, and welcome to another edition of the The Outsiders Edge, my personal take on the Texas Longhorns, and life in general. Let’s jump right in to the fray with this weeks hot topic of the moment…….
Case McCoy Left The Country: As we all know, Texas QB Case McCoy has left the country on a ten week mission trip, doing something no one should look down upon: helping out his fellow man. Now that said, there are rumors flying all over the place about what it means for his status with the program. Keep calm, and lets look at the facts in the matter.
McCoy has graduated, and is eligible to transfer to any school without penalty next year and play so long as they offer a graduate degree Texas does not. McCoy will not be the starter, and has been passed up by Tyrone Swoopes for the #2 QB spot behind David Ash. McCoy is not his brother, and doesn’t, nor did he ever, possess the arm strength to hit all the throws (well to his receivers at least).
In his article this wee...

Monday Morning Horn – May 20, 2013

I’m ready for football.
I realize it’s only May. But with the Texas baseball program in the trash can of all dumpster fires, football is right around the corner.
Recruiting combines, college camps, and 7-on-7 is a wonderful teaser until two-a-days in August. This weekend, I got my football fix. It stoked a fire that is my pigskin passion. I also got wind of a few interesting tidbits about the Texas football program heading into 2013. A QB situation could be brewing, and it involves everyone in some fashion. Let’s get started.
My boy, Wes Crochet, a HornSports contributor and UTSA writer shared a recruiting tidbit that got me digging. San Antonio Central HS QB, Jeremy Jones met with UT off-coordinator Major Applewhite last week. Jones is a 2014 dual-threat prospect who has suddenly popped up on the Longhorns’ radar.
Now, that sounds odd considering Texas has a pledge from one of the top 5 QB’s in the nation, Denton Guyer’s Jerrod Heard, No 7 on the HornSports 50 for 2014 Recruit r...

Time for Vince Young to Move on From Football?

Time for Vince Young to Move on From Football?

The road to fame and fortune has been a rocky one for Vince Young and one that is not necessarily done just yet, but is teetering dangerously close to finality. After being out of the game for a season it would seem that his day is done.

Inconsistent play combined with serious character issues on and off the field (yes, there have been plenty that did worse than him, but that doesn’t excuse his actions) have led to the former national champion looking for work at the age of 30 when he should be in the prime of his career.

If only his career had taken a different route.

Back in 2006 when he led the Texas Longhorns to the 2005 National Championship he was on top of the world. He had the perfect opportunity to showcase his talents against the defending national champions (USC) and did just that with 467 total yards and three touchdowns in what many have called one of the greatest games in college football history.

The stage was set followi

Vince Young: Graduating from Texas better than winning national title

Things haven't exactly gone Vince Young's way since leading the Texas Longhorns to the BCS title in 2006. The former third overall pick has seemingly had trouble follow him since then, but on Friday some good news finally came his way as he was awarded his college degree in Youth and Community Studies."This will rank No. 1 because it is what I came to school for," Young told CBSSports.com. I came here to get an education, and to win a national championship. And now, I get to put that smile on my mom's face."Young's professional career got off to a promising start after he won the Offensive Rookie of the Year Award and was even named to the Pro Bowl. However, a series of bad financial decisions and off-the-field incidents eventually derailed Young's playings days as a member of the Tennessee Titans. The Titans released him in 2010 before Young spent short stints with the likes of the Buffalo Bills and Philadelphia Eagles. He has been on the outside o...

The Texas Longhorns missed the NCAA tournament for the first time in 15 years last season as they finished 16-18. That finish has been met with some roster turnover with Julien Lewis being the latest player to transfer from the school.
Lewis started 21 games last season and averaged 11.2 points. His departure means that the Longhorns will be without their top three scorers last season.
Guard Sheldon McClellan, who led Texas in scoring most of the season left the team earlier this year. Myck Kabongo was was voted the teams most valuable player left to enter the NBA draft.

Texas guard Julien Lewis transfers

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) -- Texas guard Julien Lewis has been granted his release and will become the third player to leave the Longhorns since they finished a disappointing season 16-18 and missed the NCAA tournament for the first time in 15 years.

The school announced the departure Tuesday.

Guard Sheldon McClellan, who led Texas in scoring most of the season but clashed with coach Rick Barnes, left the team earlier this year. Myck Kabongo, who was voted the team's most valuable player despite sitting out a 23-game NCAA suspension, left school to enter the NBA draft.

Lewis started 21 games and averaged 11.2 points. Texas is now without its top three scorers from last season.

Big Mike’s random thoughts on a Sunday night

The dog days of summer will be upon us soon but the good news is that football is right around the corner. The 2013 football season could be a decade defining moment for the entire state of University of Texas athletics. The resurgence of our friends in College Station along with the current three year dismal performance of the football team has led us all to take pause and realize everything Mack has built over the past 15 years is not only at stake, but could have ramifications for years to come if 2013 does not end with at least a Big 12 title & a BCS bowl. With that said a few thoughts….
2013 is a MAJOR DEAL:
Mack needs to trust Major to run the show on offense and give Applewhite full autonomy to call the plays as he see fits. Will this happen? We can’t know for sure but Mack is a smart guy and he knows his legacy is at stake.
Defense, Defense, Defense:
The 2012 version of the Texas defense was like waking up the next morning with the 250 pound chick who looked 125 at 3am. ...

Texas makes stadium upgrades, but no upstage of A&M

The University of Texas system regents approved a 62 million upgrade to Darrell K. Royal-Memorial Stadium on Thursday, but its not what you think.

The Longhorns arent trying to one-up the Aggies, who last week approved a 450 million complete overhaul of Kyle Field that would put its capacity at 102,500 more than Royal-Memorial Stadiums current 100,119.

According to the Austin American-Statesman, the improvements wont add any seats. Instead, the funds will mainly be used to renovate Bellmont Hall, the building incorporated into the west side of the stadium. Bellmont Hall is now an academic center for kinesiology, health education and fine arts.

The improvement package includes a volleyball practice area under the north end zone as well as some additional athletics offices.

This isnt a response to Texas A&Ms splashy upgrades to Kyle Field, but who would be surprised if UT announces one in the near future?

Monday Morning Horn – May 6, 2013 Late Editon

Where have you gone Texas baseball ???
That’s the question I’ve started asking myself these last few weeks…. really months.
The team with the highest winning percentage in Division-1 history (.740).
The team with 77 conference titles and 34 College World Series appearances, both records.
The team that went to the College World Series six consecutive years (2000-06) and holds the mark for the most trips to Rosenblatt.
This team, in the Augie Garrido era, has appeared in nine CWS’s, with two national championships in four title game appearances.
This team influenced the masses into being coined,” The University of Texas at Omaha.”
The Texas Longhorns were the standard for NCAA Div-1 baseball.
This team will battle in Ft. Worth with TCU this weekend, and it’ll be their last chance to win a Big-12 series. In 2013.

Texas P Corey Knebel suspended after giving urine to teammate who failed drug test with it

The Texas Longhorns are not the first team to have players who try to pull the old switcheroo when it comes to providing a urine sample, but they have by no means perfected it. Pitcher Corey Knebel reportedly learned the risks involved with such funny business on Friday.
According to the Austin American-Statesman, Knebel was suspended for the team’s weekend series against Kansas State for a violation involving a drug test. A source reportedly told the paper that Knebel was trying to help out a teammate by providing him with a urine sample so he could pass a drug test. The only problem with that is that Knebel takes Adderall to treat his ADHD, which resulted in a failed test.
It is not known which teammate Knebel provided the urine for. Sophomore pitcher Cameron Cox was also suspended indefinitely for what a team spokesman called “a violation of an unspecified team rule,” but it is not clear if Cox’s suspension is directly related to Knebel’s.
Adderall is on the NCAA’s list of banned...

College Football Fans Are Torching Texas Coach Mack Brown For Tweeting About Alamo Bowl Rings

While winning the Alamo Bowl might be a fine accomplishment for many college football teams across the nation, the Texas Longhorns and their fans expect more.
So when Mack Brown decided to tweet out a picture of the rings the team received for winning their bowl game, the reaction on Twitter was predictable.

Just gave guys their Bowl Champ rings. Told them It’s reward 4 winning Bowl game vs #13 Oregon St &momentum for 2013 twitter.com/UT_MackBrown/s…

Giving out Alamo Bowl rings? Perfectly fine. But tweeting about giving out Alamo Bowl rings? You sort of have to know what’s coming, right?
— Mike Finger (@mikefinger) May 3, 2013

Giving out rings for the Alamo Bowl is like giving an Emmy to the Longhorn Network for best channel no one watches.

Mack Brown rewarded his players with “Championship” rings for winning the Alamo Bowl…just makes Texas that much more of a laughing stock.

Texas A&M's Kyle Field expanding to hold 102,500

You can call it "The House That Johnny Football Built" when Texas A&M finishes expanding Kyle Field to 102,500 seats, making it the biggest stadium in the SEC.

Except that renewed excitement in A&M football happened long before anyone knew that Johnny Manziel would take college football by storm.

The surge in enthusiasm for A&M football came when the Aggies decided to leave the Big 12 and join the Southeastern Conference. The Aggies have supported that move with their pocketbook and their presence at games.

Soon, they will have a football palace to reflect that fervor.

In 2011, A&M's final year in the Big 12, Kyle Field was sold out for every home game for the first time.

Last season, season tickets were sold out in late March, the earliest that mark had been achieved.

So when Texas A&M officials announced Wednesday that Kyle Field will be remade into a bigger, better version, the reaction is almost a "What took you so long?"

Old rivalries hard to let go for some Aggies

Texas A&M and Texas are currently in an indefinite hiatus in playing each other competitively, but that doesn't mean the old rivals can't still manage to get under each other's skin every once in a while, even if they are now in separate conferences.

Several subjects in maroon shirts were caught red-handed allegedly drawing Aggies' "ATM" logos with chalk on buildings around the University of Texas campus in Austin according to the UT Police Department's Campus Crime Watch report on April 15th.

According to the report, the Texas A&M students were pledging to a fraternity.

"He explained that he along with the other nine students were pledging the Sigma Lambda Beta fraternity," the UT Police report stated. "The group was currently on a scavenger hunt and needed to place the 'ATM' logo somewhere on UT."

All members of the group were issued Criminal Trespass Warnings. One member of the group was issued a court appearance citation for Criminal Mi
