Southern Cal, San Jose State share 1st-round lead

Southern California and San Jose State shared the lead at 4-under 284 after the first round of the NCAA Women's Golf Championships on Tuesday.

USC, which won titles in 2003 and '08 and was runner-up to Alabama last year, came in as the top-ranked team in the country, while San Jose State - seeking its first team title in 21 years - was 48th.

Duke, which won back-to-back-to-back titles from 2005-2007, was in third after a 2-under 286 on the University of Georgia Golf Course, two strokes ahead of the Crimson Tide.

Spartans freshman Regan De Guzman leads the field at 5-under 67, with the Blue Devils' Celine Boutier and Alabama's Stephanie Meadow two shots back. Mississippi State's Allie McDonald and Southern Cal's Annie Park were tied for fourth at 2-under, with 14 players tied for sixth place another shot behind.

College Player Spotlight: San Jose State QB David Fales Q&A

For this edition of our college player spotlights, we had the opportunity to ask one of the NCAA's finest pure passers, David Fales, some questions about his collegiate career.

Q: Beginning with the start of your college career, what led you to leaving Nevada?

A: Originally signing there [Nevada], I was thinking the offense was more of a passing offense. That’s what Coach [Chris] Ault did previously. After fall camp, I realized it wasn’t the best fit for me and had to make a decision if I was going to stay or leave.

Q: How did you end up at Monterey Peninsula College? And, on the same track, San Jose State?

A: I had a previous relationship with the head coach (Mike Rasmussen) at Monterey Peninsula College. So, if I knew I was going to transfer and go to JC, I knew where I was going to go. That’s how I ended up there. I still have a really good relationship with him.

Going to San Jose State, Coach [Terry] Malley recruited me before my second year. Then, afte...

David Fales: The Legacy Begins

David Fales: The Legacy Begins(David Fales) Courtesy of zimbio.com
If you don’t already know the name of San Jose State’s QB, you will by next season. David Fales jumped in last year as a first year starter and straight up dominated. Now, he didn’t dominate in a fluky manor like Manziel did. No, Fales shows glaring signs of incredible NFL potential. I originally heard of him while watching their game film of their TE, Ryan Otten. After 2 phenomenally placed throws, I literally yelled out, “Wow! Who is this kid?” After that, I knew there was more research to be done. Through 3 full games against BYU, Stanford, and Colorado State, I knew that there was something special about him.
The one thing that jumps off the screen about Fales is his almost unreal ability to fit the ball into a spot that you would think is literally impossible. He dominates the back shoulder throw and often gets the ball just out of a defender’s reach, yet perfectly into the hands of his intended target. One of h...

Ali's Olympic boxing coach dies at 90

Julius Menendez, who coached Muhammad Ali to the gold medal at the 1960 Olympics, has died. He was 90.

San Jose State University says Menendez died April 14 in Gilroy, California, two days before his 91st birthday.

Menendez was the head boxing coach for the United States in the 1960 Olympics in Rome when Ali, then known as Cassius Clay, won the light heavyweight division. Eddie Crook Jr. and Wilbert McClure also won gold medals for the U.S. that year.

Menendez also coached the U.S. men's soccer team in the 1976 Olympics and was the assistant for the 1972 soccer team.

Menendez also won three U.S. college championships as coach at San Jose State and won 295 games in 36 seasons as the Spartans' soccer coach.

Colorado Football: Mike MacIntyre reflects on Buffaloes' spring

Colorado made its case for being the worst football program in the FBS during the 2012 season, winning just one game and losing the other 11 by an average of 30.8 points.

This doesn’t bother coach Mike MacIntyre, who led a similar situation during his tenure with San Jose State. In 2009, the Spartans went 2-10, leading to his hire. Three short years later, the program finished with its first 11-win season in school history.

“Every school is a little different, but record-wise this is a similar situation as to when I took over [at San Jose State],” said MacIntyre during a phone interview. “Everyone here wants to be successful and wants to get it done from the top of the administration down to university. It’s been a daily process to get better and to improve, and in time, we’ll do it.”

Although no one on the Colorado roster has been a part of a winning season, there’s a remarkable energy amongst the city of Boulder and the football team.

It just might be the history remin...

College Football 2013: San Jose State moving forward from great spring

Mike MacIntyre bolted to Colorado after leading San Jose State to the program’s first 11-win season, but by no means did he leave the Spartans empty-handed for 2013.

Back on the field this fall are 16 returning starters, including quarterback David Fales, who finished with the country’s third-best passing efficiency last season (170.8 rating).

“It’s a good group,” said new coach Ron Caragher, who comes over from the University of San Diego. “(MacIntyre) did a good job recruiting. What we need to do is bring the chemistry together and get everyone on the same page.”

San Jose State was one of the first teams to wrap up their spring session, holding its annual spring game on March 23.

Caragher was impressed with the effort given by the entire crew and emphasized that “a number of players had a great spring,” but pointed out a few special names that really seemed to stand out throughout practice.

Rising junior defensive lineman Travis Racidi topped that list and has all b...

Exclusive Interview: San Jose State CB Ronnie Yell

San Jose State cornerback Ronnie Yell is a solid option for teams looking to pick up a defensive back with special teams/return ability. In addition to logging 41 tackles & 9 pass breakups as a senior at cornerback across from another talented teammate, Bene Benikwere, Yell also averaged 20 per kick return over his career. His overall versatility has NFL teams intrigued, and it was my pleasure to interview Ronnie for NFL Draft Zone
Shaun DePasquale: Thank you for taking the time to speak with me today Ronnie. Can you tell me where you’re training for the NFL Draft?
Ronnie Yell: I’m currently training at Team Taf training in Redwood City, CA with former San Jose State Quarterback Adam Tafralis.
SD: What do you feel are your strengths and things you may need to work on?
RY: I feel my strengths are my speed and quickness, the ability to change directions and get in and out of breaks being able to accelerate and gain ground quickly. I also feel my strengths are within my strength, ...

San Jose St. fires Nessman as coach

San Jose State has fired men's basketball coach George Nessman after eight seasons with the Spartans.

Athletic director Gene Bleymaier announced the move on Wednesday, a day after San Jose State's season ended with a 67-49 loss to UTSA in the WAC tournament in Las Vegas.

The Spartans went 9-20 this season, their second straight campaign with only nine wins. Nessman had an 86-161 record in his tenure and led the team to the College Basketball Invitational in 2011.

San Jose State is looking to upgrade the program before its move to the more strenuous Mountain West Conference next season.

San Jose State’s top scorer suspended for remainder of season

via Mercury News:

San Jose State’s top scorer James Kinney (center) was suspended recently for unspecified reason’s. He was the teams leading scorer.
SAN JOSE — San Jose State’s leading scorer, James Kinney, is suspended for the season, and the Spartans’ hopes of competing the rest of the way might be in similar jeopardy.
The senior guard missed his eighth straight game on Friday, and San Jose State lost its eighth straight, scoring a season-low point total in a 63-36 defeat to Utah State before 1,876 at the Event Center.
Spartans coach George Nessman confirmed after the game that Kinney’s suspension for violating team policies will last through the remainder of the season. The violation hasn’t been specified, but it is believed to be related to academics.

Caragher introduced as Spartans coach

Bay Area native Ron Caragher was introduced as the football coach at San Jose State on Monday.

Caragher, who spent the past six years at San Diego, replaces Mike MacIntyre to become the 28th coach at the school.

MacIntyre left to take the head job at Colorado. The Spartans finished the regular season 10-2 and will play in the Military Bowl.

Caragher replaced Jim Harbaugh, who is the coach of the San Francisco 49ers, at San Diego, where he compiled a 44-22 record with three conference championships.

Caragher attended Bellarmine Prep in San Jose before going on to UCLA, where he spent four years as a backup quarterback.

San Jose State athletic director Gene Bleymaier said Caragher was always an option as a potential candidate.

Baer to coach Spartans in bowl game

San Jose State defensive coordinator Kent Baer will be the team's interim coach for the Military Bowl.

Athletic director Gene Bleymaier said Tuesday that Baer will coach the 24th-ranked Spartans against Bowling Green on Dec. 27. Baer takes over for Mike MacIntyre, who left Monday to take the head coaching job at Colorado.

Baer is finishing his fifth season on the coaching staff for the Spartans (10-2). Baer also served as interim coach for Notre Dame in the 2004 Insight Bowl.

Military Bowl will be San Jose State vs. MAC

This Military Bowl will feature San Jose State and a team from the Mid-American Conference.

San Jose State has accepted an invitation, and the MAC announced Friday night that it reached an agreement with the bowl for one of its teams to be in the game Dec. 27. The Military Bowl is played at RFK Stadium. Last year, another MAC team was in it when Toledo beat Air Force 42-41.

This year's game was supposed to be Army against an Atlantic Coast Conference team, but Army isn't eligible, and the ACC has only six bowl-eligible teams following Miami's decision to ban itself from the postseason.

The MAC has seven bowl-eligible teams.

San Jose State may want to take a mulligan on their media guide cover

San Jose State produced this media guide and it’s pretty terrible. It’s poorly photoshopped and just an absolute train wreck of a media guide. San Jose State is home to Ellis T. Jones III who holds the Ellis T. Jones III award in EDSBS’ Fulmer Cup.

San Jose State baseball coach Sam Piraro retires

San Jose State baseball coach Sam Piraro is retiring after 25 seasons with the university.

Piraro thanked the school Wednesday for the opportunity and said he has been ''extremely honored'' to coach the Spartans. He says he's looking forward to spending more time with his wife, JoAnn, and ''do things that we have not previously been able to do.''

The 60-year-old Piraro leaves San Jose State with an 806-632-6 record and the most wins in school history. He guided the Spartans to 18 winnings seasons, three Western Athletic Conference championships - the last coming in 2009 - and the College World Series in 2000. He also coached at Mission College in nearby Santa Clara from 1980-86.

Associate head coach Mark O'Brien will serve as the interim head coach.
