2013 TSHQ CFB Preseason Top 25: #5 Texas A&M Aggies

As another off season of College Football material kicks off, this year marks the third year I’ll throw my hat in the ring and look at a number of topics and categories. In the process I’ll look to do everything from predicting next year’s 25 best teams, identify the games of the year, narrow down the Heisman field, identify those replacing 2012′s stars and ultimately make predictions for each league, culminating in a national championship pick. They’ll be many things I’ll be ridiculed for. There will be a number of things that will surprise some people. Ultimately you’ll come away from the next 6 months of material as ready for the college football season as I can possibly make you. While I’ll be sure to miss on things I would like to remind the skeptics I did correctly predict the same number of bowl teams preseason as Phil Steele a year ago as well as top him in BCS Bowl participants predicted before the year. Nonetheless I’m not putting out any magazines soon so keep buying his ...

Filling the Void: Texas A&M needs front seven to emerge to be legitimate SEC contender

Texas A&M’s smooth transition from the Big 12 to the SEC and the emergence of Johnny Manziel at quarterback can only mean one things for 2013 — expectations are sky high.

The reigning Heisman Trophy winner looked outstanding in the Aggies’ spring game, and the offense should be one of the best in the SEC again. But to win the league, Kevin Sumlin’s team needs to play better on defense.

In the SEC, it all starts up front as you have to stop the run and get pressure on the quarterback. The Aggies may have to replace as many as six starters from the front seven last year — with at least one of those because of off-the-field issues.

	Background

The Aggies had the 26th best scoring defense (21.8 ppg) in the nation last year and that’s a big reason by A&M was able to finish with 11 wins and knock off Alabama in Tuscaloosa.

It will be tough to replicate that success if the defense doesn’t find some replacements for stars like defensive end Damontre Moore and li...

For Texas A&M, the only easy day in the SEC was yesterday.

Despite a remarkable first season in the SEC, Texas A&M still has a long way to go to establish itself as an elite program in the nation's preeminent college football conference. Even the Aggies' head football coach Kevin Sumlin admits to that reality.

"It's funny to me that people say we'll have a target on our backs,"
Sumlin said. "We finished third in the SEC West. Alabama has won three
out of the last four national championships. We had a great experience
at the Cotton Bowl, but we didn't play in a BCS bowl. How do we have a
target on our backs? We're still playing catch-up."

Even with a relatively soft schedule in 2013, things won't come any easier for the Aggies. Even though Johnny Manziel and co. won't be facing any of the top teams in the SEC East (lucking out with only having to deal with Vanderbilt and Missouri as opposed to facing Georgia, Florida, or South Carolina), there's still the SEC west mi...

Sumlin bringing more swag to Texas A&M

Probably in the past, you recruited football players by talking to them about your program and their opportunity to play in it. You'd tell the mom about the academic opportunities. You'd take them around campus and make sure they saw all the pretty girls. You'd show them the trophy case.

That is of a bygone era. You know what you need now? A DJ.

Friday night, Texas A&M coach Kevin Sumlin brought a DJ to Kyle Field to spin records at a recruiting event the Aggies call "Friday Night Lights." Yeah, DJ Double R started spinning from inside the trailer of an 18-wheeler, dazzling about 35 recruits from the classes of 2014 and 2015, according to the San Antonio Express News.

And the the Aggies had a scrimmage.

The idea behind it is twofold. Sumlin is trying to impress recruits, but he is also trying to break up the monotony of spring practice for players who are already in the program. Turning it into a scrimmage and playing it at night turns it into something of an event, and the pl

Texas A&M brings DJ to spring practice; Sumlin's swag levels remain at dangerously high levels

Since taking over as head coach at Texas A&M a little over a year ago, it’s hard to argue that any coach in college football (short of Nick Saban) is riding a hotter hot streak than Kevin Sumlin.

And while part of that is certainly attributed to some Johnny Manziel-infused football magic, a lot is also a credit to the fact that no coach in the country seems to “get” 18-22-year-old kids quite like Sumlin does. It starts with the air-raid offense yes, but also trickles all the way down to the smallest little details, like allowing music to be played during practice. Understand that while “music at practice” might not mean much to you, it means a crap-ton to kids playing college football. And it was something that would’ve never been considered until Sumlin arrived last spring.

Well Sumlin was back at it again on Friday night, when the Aggies hosted their second annual “Friday Night Lights” spring scrimmage. In the process, Sumlin also proved that if he ever decides to g...

2013 Hype Video: Texas A&M Aggies

Texas A&M fans will probably flood YouTube with a number of hype videos and 2013 promo videos for the upcoming college football season, and why not? The Aggies have Johnny Manziel and Kevin Sumlin breathing new life in to the program after a rousing SEC debut season in 2012. Now Texas A&M is looking to be built for a potential national championship run, a long time coming for The 12th Man.
Here we have the first hype video to make its way to my laptop screen. Enjoy.

This may not be the strongest hype video out there, and the straight copy and paste of plays from the same camera angles one after another leaves something to be desired, but this is a solid effort that includes some good opening commentary and some nice alternate shots of fans throughout.
Have a Texas A&M themed video you think is worth sharing? Send me the link!

Kevin Sumlin Responds to Johnny Manziel Shoving an Assistant Coach

At a spring practice last Saturday for the Texas A&M Aggies there was a rather unpleasant scene on the sideline when a graduate assistant coach got in the face of quarterback Johnny Manziel who shoved him in return.

Nothing further happened since the two were separated, but there was an issue now that needed to be responded to. Yes, you had an assistant that was inappropriate in the way he berated a player and got in his face, but you also had a player that got aggressive and put his hands on a coach.

On Monday when he was asked about it head coach Kevin Sumlin has this to say:

“To be honest with you I didn’t see it — I heard about it,” Sumlin said. “People make a big deal out of stuff like that. But things happen all the time in football. I don’t think it’s that big of a story."
The general perception is that the graduate assistant was wrong in his actions so what Manziel did was okay since he was provoked. After all, how many of us would not have reacted in a similar

Manziel to take out insurance policy

Reigning Heisman winner Johnny Manziel isn't sure if he will jump to the NFL after next season, but he and his family are preparing just in case. The redshirt sophomore confirmed on Tuesday that his family is in the process of securing a disability insurance policy in case an injury prevents him from playing professionally.“We’re currently in the process of doing that,” Manziel said to ESPN.com. ”It’s just a precaution. I think there’s a lot of players who have done it in the past and you never know what could happen. Football is a dangerous sport, so you kind of have to make sure that you take a precaution in that regard.”The Texas A&M Aggie said his parents are handling the bulk of the process along with the school. Athletes are eligible to receive up to $5 million in coverage under the "Exceptional Student-Athlete Disability Insurance Program," which protects against loss of future earnings if a disabling injury occurs during an athlete's college career.Manz...

Report: Texas A&M's Sumlin gets big raise

After just one year at Texas A&M, football coach Kevin Sumlin earned a raise of 1.1 million per year, a more than 50 percent increase over his previous salary.

Now that was a good year.

Sumlin's new contract, as reported in The Dallas Morning News, will pay him 3.1 million per year, an upgrade from his original deal which paid him 2 million per year.

Sumlin's contract also was extended through the 2017 season.

The new deal was announced before Feb. 6, National Signing Day, but an open records request made by The Morning News revealed details, including that the contract was not finalized until Tuesday with the signatures of A&M president R. Bowen Loftin and athletic director Eric Hyman.

Sumlin signed the contract Monday.

The new contract came after a breakthrough season for A&M football in Sumlin's first season as head coach. The Aggies went 11-2 in their inaugural season in the Southeastern Conference and won the AT&T Cotton Bowl.

Gallery: Johnny Football's wild and crazy offseason

The rise to stardom of Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel has been quite the ride. The day his shirtless mugshot made the rounds around the internet last summer feels like it happened ages ago. That is what happens when you lead your team to a surprisingly successful debut seaosn in the SEC on your way to a Heisman Trophy nobody could have possibly predicted before the start of the season. We have followed Johnny Manziel every step of the way this off-season and thanks to the age of social media we live in it has been pretty easy to soak in the off-season activities of Manziel. With time still to spare before spring football starts up in College Station and a summer of fun surely ahead of us we wonder if the past couple of months have been just a tease for what is still to come before the first kickoff in 2013. We have compiled a sort of photo diary of Manziel's off-seaosn just to illustrate how much better his off-seaosn has been compared to your's. View it after ...

Is seems like an event isn't an event these days until Johnny Manziel shows up. And since the Texas A&M Heisman Trophy-winning starting quarterback is in New Orleans, we can officially say that Mardi Gras is on. What's bonus is the fact that he in the Big Easy with newly-comitted to Ole Miss defensive end Robert Nkemdiche and his brother, Rebel linebacker Denzel Nkemdiche.

No word yet to how Texas A&M head football coach Kevin Sumlin will react to the latest stop of the Johnny Manziel Victory Tour, but he can't be happy with Manziel in a yellow t-shirt and a purple hat with tiger stripes on it. Especially since LSU beat the Aggies last season.

Texas A&M's Luke Joeckel leaving for NFL

The Texas A&M Aggies lost a second key junior to the NFL Draft on Tuesday as left offensive tackle Luke Joeckel has decided to forgo his senior season.

The 6-foot-6, 310-pound Joeckel could be the No. 1 overall pick in April's draft.

The Arlington High School graduate is coming off a season in which he was a consensus All-America and won the Outland Trophy while protecting Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel. He started 39 consecutive games for the Aggies.

"This was a very difficult decision for me," Joeckel said. "I have thought long and hard and visited with my family and coaches. I feel it is my best interest to come out. I appreciate all that Texas A&M has done for me and my family."

Joeckel's twin brother, Matt, is a backup quarterback for the Aggies.

Joeckel joins defensive end Damontre Moore, who made his decision to leave A&M last week, as Aggies leaving school early.

"Luke is projected to be one of the top players selected in the overall draft

Walker is a 6’1″ 220 lb junior outside linebacker who also plays some running back for the Buckeyes. As a sophomore, he was the district newcomer of the year with 130 tackles, nine sacks, four forced fumbles and an interception.
According to an interview Walker did with Brice Jones of TexAgs.com, he has tallied 54 tackles with five sacks and three forced fumbles through seven games of his junior season.
He has also scored four times on the ground with two receiving touchdowns from the running back spot.
Walker is the second commitment of the 2014 class to go along with cornerback Cedric Collins from Dallas Skyline. He chose the Aggies over offers from Oklahoma, Texas and Texas Tech.

Texas A&M sign shows up in Florida

Give credit to Texas A&M: Ever since the perennial Big XII whipping boy decided to join college football’s best conference a year or so ago, they’ve done just about everything right. They went out and hired arguably the best coach on the market in Kevin Sumlin. They’re currently killing it on the recruiting trail. And they’ve sold more season tickets this year than ever before. Simply put, Texas A&M is taking this whole “move to the SEC” thing seriously. Seriously enough, apparently to start talking trash SEC style as well.
Why’s that? Well for those of you who didn’t hear, the Aggies made headlines on Tuesday morning when a Texas A&M-themed billboard just happened to pop up in Gainesville. It’s on the corner of 13th Street and 53rd Avenue, according to Chris Harry of GatorZone.com, and pulls no punches on its assessment on where the school stands in its new conference. The billboard reads: "You've Been Annexed By Aggie Nation," will smaller print b...

Newly Drafted Miami Dolphin Ryan Tannehill Married Jessica Simpson Look-A-Like Lauren Ulfer (Photos)

The first round of the 2012 NFL Draft came and went Thursday night, and as always, all eyes were on the quarterbacks. The only difference this year, was that when Texas A&M product Ryan Tannehill was drafted, all eyes turned to Twitter where Tannehill's wife Lauren Ulfer stole the show. Ulfer, a former Texas A&M cheerleaders and current model, is already drawing comparisons to pop sensation Jessica Simpson, a fact that Tannehill will soon be getting an earful of from his new South Beach teammates.
