UConn Lands Top Recruit Daniel Hamilton

Twitter/@D_ham5 A lot of people thought that UConn’s new permanent residence in the American Athletic Conference would put a damper on recruiting. It did no such thing. UConn fans woke up on Saturday to the news that top recruit Daniel Hamilton (No. 27 in the ESPN 60 for the Class of 2014) had committed to the school for the 2014-15 season. Hamilton, a 6-foot-6 shooting guard from Los Angeles visited UConn last weekend, and Dinos Trigonis reported that he enjoyed his visit so much that UConn appeared to be a favorite to land him. Hamilton retweeted that report and signed five days later. Ya boy just committed to Connecticut #huskyguard can’t wait instagram.com/p/ZKExT9oApG/ — Daniel Hamilton (@D_ham5) May 11, 2013 Cal, Houston, Oklahoma State, San Diego State, TCU, UNLV and UTEP all made offers to Hamilton, and Kansas and Louisville had expressed interest. For the first time, head coach Kevin Ollie has shown that he intends to use his Los Angeles connection. The former UConn guard...

UConn's Napier to stay for senior year

Connecticut guard Shabazz Napier announced Friday he will pass on the NBA draft and remain in school for his senior season.

''I am very much looking forward to getting closer to receiving my college degree, as well as becoming a stronger leader for my teammates on and off the court,'' Napier said in a statement. ''We think we have a great team for next season and we're excited about playing for a conference championship and in the NCAA tournament.''

UConn went 20-10 last season but was barred from the Big East and NCAA tournaments after failing to qualify academically.

Two other top Huskies, sophomores Ryan Boatright and DeAndre Daniels, also told the coaching staff they will return. Boatright and Daniels had not been considered as likely to leave as Napier, the team's floor leader also who led UConn in scoring last season, averaging more than 17 points. The 6-foot-1 junior also averaged 4.6 assists, two steals and more than four rebounds per game.

Calhoun, Auriemma inducted into Hall

Former Connecticut basketball coach Jim Calhoun and UConn women's basketball coach Geno Auriemma were inducted Wednesday into the state's Hall of Fame.

The coaches, both already members of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, had their names added to a wall that includes such Connecticut icons as author Mark Twain, lexicographer Noah Webster and baseball pioneer Jackie Robinson.

Calhoun guided the Huskies to three national titles in his 26 years at UConn before retiring after the 2011-12 season. He and Auriemma both said they were humbled by the honor.

''It's really great. It only took me 26 years, but it took Mark Twain 150 to get into the Hall of Fame,'' Calhoun joked.

Auriemma, who coached his team to the program's eighth national title earlier this month, quipped that he was just there to represent actor Paul Newman, a 2009 inductee.

''It's unbelievably rewarding and humbling and you're grateful and appreciative anytime someone wants to honor

Connecticut Huskies Officially Have the Coolest Helmets in College Football

It is an absolute shame that the UConn football program does not get much national attention. I so want to see the imaged of a running back bearing down on a poor defensive back or a hulking defensive lineman moments before he sacks the quarterback.

It will be like White Fang attacks.

I know the school said that when they redesigned their logo they took great pains to make sure that it was not going to be menacing or frightening to small children in any way. While I think they will be okay with the life size mascot and the plush dolls they try to sell kids, it isn't going to work with the football helmets.

Especially when someone colors in the eyes to make them red. Oh yeah. Demon wolf (husky) style.

UConn’s Tyler Olander Fractures Foot, Huskies Down To 6 Scholarship Players

Injuries have been piling up at UConn since the double overtime loss to Georgetown – with junior forward Tyler Olander added to the growing list of casualties.
UConn announced on Thursday that Olander is done for the season with a fractured foot that will likely require surgery.

Tyler Olander fractured his left foot vs USF, #UConn announces.
— Kevin Duffy (@KevinRDuffy) March 7, 2013

The good news for UConn: losing Olander means that he only misses Saturday’s game against Providence, when the Huskies will be going for their 20th and final win of the season.
Olander joins Niels Giffey (fractured finger) as a definite scratch for the game against the Friars. Both Shabazz Napier (foot) and Omar Calhoun (wrist) are day-to-day as a result of their injuries.
UConn now has six healthy scholarship players – Ryan Boatright, Brendan Allen, Leon Tolksdorf, DeAndre Daniels, R.J. Evans and Phil Nolan.
With Olander out on Saturday, Nolan is expected to start for the Huskies.
