NCAA: Ware can't receive gifts

Kevin Ware is a name we know for one main unfortunate reason, and it has nothing to do with his basketball play on the court. Ware was the victim of a freak, and terrible leg injury (the video if you’re interested, though I wouldn’t recommend it) during the NCAA tournament that basically left his leg in two pieces. However, after surgery, Ware is on the road to recovery, and has received an immense amount of support from around the country that was documented by Pat Forde of Yahoo! Sports. The sophomore guard has been piled with letters and notes to the point where he has a person in the University Of Louisville’s office dedicated to handling and organizing the plethora of things being sent Ware’s way. Some supporters have taken it a step further, and have sent Ware gifts as a kind gesture. One problem: many of these gifts violate NCAA policy and cannot be accepted. Forde lists some of the gifts that have been returned or used for other purposes: A significant amount of the mail has been flagged for R

Peyton Siva Can Fly

Maybe it’s just me, but over the past couple of years, I think a majority of Louisville fans forgot just how athletic Peyton Siva was.
Maybe because he played most of his junior season with an injured ankle and didn’t have a lot of opportunities to showcase his athleticism as a senior.
If you’re one of those who forgot Siva’s athleticism, some of his numbers from the NBA Draft Combine should remind you. Siva measured in with a 33 ½ inch standing vertical leap and a 41 ½ inch max vertical leap.
As of right now that’s the fourth highest vertical of anyone at the combine. Former Miami point guard Shane Larkin is the only guard at the camp that had a higher vertical leap than Siva (44 in.)
According to Chad Ford of ESPN, vertical leap wasn’t the only area that Siva stood out in today. He also did very well in the lane agility tests.
Let these videos refresh your memory….

Photo: Rick Pitino Brought The NCAA Championship Trophy To His Daughter’s 21st Birthday Party

The Pitino family has it pretty good right now. Rick just won the NCAA Championship, his son Richard was just named the head coach at Minnesota, and best of all, Jacqueline, his daughter, just turned 21-years-old. To celebrate, Rick decided to bring the NCAA title trophy to her celebration.

While bringing such an important piece of Louisville history to an event focused on drinking may not be overly intelligent, I don’t think Pitino cares anymore. He just got a giant tattoo on his back, for heaven’s sake.
I do wonder if they took shots off of it in some form though.

Montrezl Harrell Tabbed As A Potential Breakout Player In 2013-14

It’s hard to find any potential benefits from losing a guy like Gorgui Dieng. There is no denying that he will easily be the hardest player to replace from last year’s team. However, the one and only positive from Dieng leaving early is you’ll now see much more playing time for Montrezl Harrell.
Good things seem to happen when Trez is on the floor. Without Gorgui Dieng, there are a few options for Pitino at the center position next year. You could throw Mangok Mathiang out there and see if he’s ready. Fifth year senior Stephen Van Treese is a consistent option. However, if I’m the one making the decision, I’d leave Chane Behanan at the power forward position and use Trez as the center. Sure, he’s a little undersized, but his 7-foot-3 wingspan more than makes up for it.
Jeff Goodman of CBS Sports tabbed Harrell as one of the potential breakout players in college hoops next season.

Louisville Football Earns Another Top 10 Ranking

For the third time in three weeks, the Louisville football program has found themselves ranked in the top ten. This time it’s Dennis Dodd of CBS Sports’ post-spring top 25. Dodd has Charlie Strong and the Cardinals at No. 10. ESPN ranked Louisville No. 4 in their “entirely too early preseason top 25.” Sports Illustrated ranked the Cards No. 8 in their post-spring top 25 rankings.
10 Louisville (11)
Overall: 11-2
Conference: 5-2
Let’s see, how to describe Louisville’s last few months. How about, fantastic? AD Tom Jurich got the Cardinals into the ACC in November. Louisville then won the Big East and embarrassed Florida in the Sugar Bowl. That good enough for ya? Quarterback Teddy Bridgewater leads a group of 16 starters. This is definitely a top 10 program on the rise with Charlie Strong in place for the foreseeable future.

Charlie Strong Will Have Tough Competition For State’s Top Recruit

Matt Elam, a 6-foot-6, 230-pound, defensive tackle from John Hardin High School in Elizabethtown is likely the top overall prospect in the state of Kentucky from the 2014 class.
Considering the success that Charlie Strong has had at Louisville in the past few years, you’d think any top recruit from the state of Kentucky would keep Louisville high on his list. Although Elam has interest in Louisville, Charlie Strong will have some tough competition in his recruitment.
Elam has scholarship offers from some of the top programs in the country. His most recent list includes Alabama, Kentucky, Louisville, Florida and Tennessee. Scout.com rates Elam as a four star prospect and he’s considered to be one of the top 20 defensive tackles in the country.
Louisville appears to be in good shape with Elam, but Alabama and Kentucky may have an early leg up on the Cards. Mark Stoops’ recent success on the recruiting trail has made quite an impression on Elam. Alabama head coach Nick Saban spoke wit...

It Was The Kragthorpe Leftovers That Laid The Foundation For Success

When Charlie Strong came to Louisville, the progress of the team coming off the Kragthorpe era was as motionless as the chain of Cardinal cabooses behind PJCS. During the three short seasons since his arrival, conductor Strong has gotten the team back on the tracks and moving towards goals that are set higher and higher with the snap of each opener. While the 2012 season was all about getting on the train, 2013 is all about dropping that baby into fifth gear and zooming to infinity and beyond. While we all count down the days until we see our gridiron heroes storm the field on August 31st, let’s take a minute to properly bid adieu to the some of the men who helped get this locomotive up and running.
Departing from the roster are twelve players who for four years dedicated their hearts and souls to the program. The 2012 seniors that wore the red and white are no longer listed on the roster, but will always have a special place in the hearts and minds of the Card faithful. Only some w...

Gorgui Dieng Won’t Participate In The NBA Draft Combine

According to Jeff Goodman of CBS Sports, former Louisville center Gorgui Dieng will not participate in this week’s NBA Draft Combine in Chicago, IL.
Dieng reportedly suffered an ankle sprain last week while training in Los Angeles, CA. The Senegal native made the trip to Chicago, but will be held out of on-court drills for precautionary measures.
The majority of the mainstream mock drafts project Dieng to be taken in the middle of the first round. A few of them have him being taken in the lottery.
Dieng is just one of the many potential first round picks that won’t compete at this week’s combine. Trey Burke, Michael Carter-Williams and Mason Plumlee will also be held out of action.

Former Louisville assistant basketball coach Mark Lieberman has been named the head boys basketball coach at Floyd Central High School in Floyds Knobs, IN. Lieberman was voted in by the New Albany-Floyd County Consolidated School system on Monday evening.
Lieberman spent two seasons with Rick Pitino’s program at Louisville. He was an assistant coach during the 2010-11 season and was the director of basketball operations in 2011-12. Lieberman spent last season at alma mater, Florida International, where he was an assistant coach under Richad Pitino, who spent just one year at FIU before accepting the job at Minnesota.
Before joining the college ranks in 2010, Lieberman was a successful high school for 16 years in the state of Florida. He was honored as the Florida High School Athletic Association Coach of the Year on three occasions (2003, 2007, 2008) and twice served as the head coach of a high school all-star game, including the 2008 Derby Festival All-Star game in Louisville and t...

Miami Quarterback Commit May Be Leaning Towards Louisville

The Louisville football program may soon add commitment number fourteen to their 2014 recruiting class. Alin Edouard, a 6-foot-1, 180-pound dual-threat quarterback from Hialeah, Florida has been committed to Miami since February, but is currently exploring his options. Committing to Louisville is an option that Edouard is strongly considering.
Miami received a commitment from Brad Kaaya, a pro-style quarterback from California over the weekend, which led to many assuming that Edouard and Miami will soon part ways. Eduoard told InsideTheU.com on Sunday that his commitment to Miami is not strong.
“I have all these colleges coming after me and it’s really difficult to tell them no. They’re all telling me different things that are interesting,” Edouard tells Tito Benach of CanesInsight.com. “Louisville is coming hard at me.”
The fact that Miami took a commitment from another quarterback in the 2014 class isn’t the only sign that Edouard and the Canes may be soon parting ways. Miami assi...

Peyton Siva Popped The Question Over The Weekend

Former Louisville point guard Peyton Siva has been a very busy man in recent weeks. Since winning the 2013 national championship, Siva has been training for the NBA Draft in Las Vegas at the Impact Basketball Academy. He made the trip back to Louisville for the Derby last weekend and then returned once again this past weekend for his graduation. Siva flew back to Vegas on Sunday and he’ll head to Chicago later this week for the NBA Draft Combine.

Despite constantly traveling for the past month, Siva made time to follow through with something that I can only assume that he’d been planning for quite some time. Following his graduation on Saturday, Siva proposed to his girlfriend, Patience McCroskey. She said yes.
I’m sure that there are hearts across Louisville that are broken after finding this out, but congrats to the future Mr. and Mrs. Peyton Siva.

Charlie Strong Lands Two Wide Receivers

The Louisville football program picked up their thirteenth and fourteenth verbal commitments from the 2014 class over the weekend. Charlie Strong received a verbal commitment from three-star wide receiver George Rushing Friday night. Isaiah Ford, also a three-star receiver, made his verbal pledge to Louisville on Saturday afternoon. Rushing, a 6-foot, 180-pound Fort Lauderdale, FL., native chose Louisville over Cincinnati, Pittsburgh and Northern Illinois. He holds from Ole Miss, Illinois, Marshall, and Boston College among others. Ford, a 6-foot-2, 170-pound prospect from Jacksonville, FL., chose Louisville over a number of elite level programs. He holds scholarship offers from Arkansas, South Carolina, West Virginia, Oregon, Mississippi State, Michigan State, Florida and Florida State among others. Assistant coach Ron Dugans was the lead recruiter for both Rushing and Ford. Louisville’s 2014 recruiting class is now ranked in the top ten by 247Sports.com

Kevin Ware Moving Quickly On The Road To Recovery

When Louisville sophomore guard Kevin Ware went down with a compound fracture to his right leg in the regional finals of the NCAA tournament, it was tough to predict when exactly he’ll be able to return to the court.
A gruesome injury like that will require at least eight months of rehab before Ware can even think about participating in full contact practices. However, Ware is as upbeat as possible about his unfortunate situation.
ESPN’s Dana O’Neil caught up with Ware over the weekend while she was in town for the Kentucky Derby. Ware shared his optimistic approach with her. “I look at it all as motivation,” he tells O’Neil. “You can’t finish until you get started.’’
It almost seems unreal to imagine, but just five weeks after the gruesome injury, Ware is already riding a stationary bike and slowly starting to be able to put pressure on his right leg.
Following the Kentucky Derby, Ware headed back to Georgia for a brief visit and will soon return back to Louisville. Just because he...

Cal's daughter mocks Pitino tattoo

Erin Calipari, Coach Cal’s daughter, has been known to mix it up on Twitter. Earlier this year, she drew a cartoon to mock Louisville fans. This morning, she was at it again, making fun of coach Rick Pitino’s new tattoo. Check it out: From now on when my dad does something embarrassing I will just say to myself “at least he doesn’t have a giant back tattoo” — Erin Calipari (@TheErinCalipari) April 27, 2013 I think the entire Big Blue Nation is with her on that one.
