Pitt pursuing Alabama transfer Trevor Lacey

Pitt has had a whirlwind offseason to say the least. The surprising departure of Steven Adams set the Panthers back in the post. Now with Trey Zeigler and potentially even JJ Moore gone, they seem a bit thin on the wings as well. It is rumored that DeAndre Kane is leaning towards coming back home to play for Pitt, but that has not been solidified yet. Enter: Trevor Lacey.
Lacey is a former five star recruit out of high school and signed with Alabama . He was initially recruited by the likes of Kentucky, Kansas, and UConn before ultimately deciding with the in-state Crimson Tide.
Lacey has been a two year starter for the Tide, and he averaged 11 points per game in 2013. Jon Rothstein tweeted yesterday that Pitt is in play for the former Alabama guard. They will reportedly go up against conference mates North Carolina, NC State, and Miami in the recruiting battle:

UNC, NC State, Miami, and Pitt are all in the mix for Alabama transfer Trevor Lacey, per multiple sources. 2 years of eligibility remaining

ESPN ranks Pitt near bottom of ACC post-spring power rankings

Okay, let's be honest, here. Power rankings for football at this point are pretty useless, considering the season is about four months away. But ESPN.com ranked all of the ACC teams following spring practices and Pitt found their way near the bottom. More specifically, the Panthers came in at No. 11 out of 14 teams:

11. Pitt: It was a rough spring for the Panthers, who saw leading returning rusher Rushel Shell transfer and also had to dismiss three backups from the team. Tom Savage is leading the quarterback battle, but he's not a lock after Chad Voytik had an impressive spring game. Pitt also needs a second dependable receiver to emerge to help free up Devin Street.

The point of needing a second receiver is duly noted, but the tight end stable of JP Holtz, Manasseh Garner, and Scott Orndoff should be good enough that they will attract quite a bit of attention. There's no Drew Carswell after, well, you know, but this group will be a good one, anyway.
I've said it before, but the more I think

Pitt coach dismisses two from team

Pittsburgh football coach Paul Chryst has dismissed two players and suspended another indefinitely after they were charged with possession of drug paraphenalia. Another player was suspended after he was charged with assault.

Tight end Drew Carswell and defensive back Eric Williams, both juniors, have been removed from the team. Carswell, Williams and defensive tackle Khaynin Mosley-Smith were all suspended last week after police made a drug raid on their house.

All three players were charged by summons. Mosley-Smith remains suspended.

Chryst has also suspended freshman QB Tra'Von Chapman indefinitely. Chapman was arrested in Ohio over the weekend on charges of assault and unlawful restraint. He has pleaded not guilty.

Is JJ Moore transferring from Pitt?

As if this month weren't tumultuous enough (what, with the Trey Zeigler transfer, Steven Adams' announcement of leaving for the NBA, and losing out on recruit Jon Severe and transfer Eli Carter), the offseason just got a little more difficult with news that forward J.J. Moore may be transferring out of the program.
First things first - as of now this doesn't appear to be a done deal. CBS Sports' Jon Rothstein tweeted the news but it's not been confirmed by the local sources yet. The Post-Gazette says that (as of now, anyway) Moore has not yet asked for his release or informed Jamie Dixon he wants out.
The Moore transfer rumor has been around the message boards for quite a while, but I've never been able to make much of it. Moore surely would like more minutes and has been blocked a bit by Lamar Patterson the past two seasons, but he's still seen plenty of time in my opinion. There are times over his career where I've called for him to play a bit more, but since he's a bit s

Pittsburgh suspends 3 following raid

Three Pittsburgh football players have been suspended by coach Paul Chryst after their house was raided following a drug sting.

Police say junior tight end Drew Carswell, defensive tackle Khaynin Mosley-Smith and junior defensive back Eric Williams each will be charged with possession of drug paraphernalia. The players' home was raided early Friday morning.

Police say an undercover agent purchased several bags of heroin from another man, Darnell Reed-Young, at the players' residence. Officers then obtained a search warrant and discovered drug packaging materials in several rooms and a scale with white residue in Carswell's bedroom.

All three players will be charged by summons. Chryst says the team ''has strict and clear standards regarding these types of behaviors'' and their actions do not represent the standards of the program or university.

3 Pitt Football Players ‘Detained’ in Heroin Drug Bust

This is definitely a good look for the Pittsburgh football team. According to Pittsburgh’s local CBS affiliate station, three players (two of which are starters) were detained in an Oakland, Pa. drug bust. The players who were detained were Drew Carswell, Khaynin Mosley-Smith and Eric Williams.
According to SB Nation:
Police, undercover officers and SWAT members raided an Oakland, Pa., home at around 10:30 p.m. and seized 20 bags of heroin, a bong and a grinder. The raid came after an investigation that led to undercover agents purchasing heroin from Darnell Reed-Young. Reed-Young was arrested before police raided the home.
Pitt’s head coach Paul Chryst already announced that all three players are suspended from the team.
“We have strict and clear standards regarding these types of behaviors,” Chryst said. “What has occurred with these three young men does not represent the standards of our program or university.”
Probably not a great way to head into the new season, huh?

QB Chad Voytik shines in Pitt spring game

Chad Voytik gave Pittsburgh coach Paul Chryst something to think about over the summer during the Panthers' annual spring game Friday night.

The redshirt freshman quarterback completed 27 of 33 passes for 358 yards and three touchdowns while getting extensive playing time, perhaps closing the gap on senior Tom Savage in the race to be the team's starter in the 2013 season opener against Florida State on Labor Day.

Savage, a former Rutgers star, completed 6 of 11 passes for 80 yards but failed to produce a touchdown while working a handful of series with the first team. Still, Chryst praised Savage's work during the spring.

Junior running back Isaac Bennett ran for 114 yards and a score and will likely move to the top of the depth chart after Rushel Shell left the team.

Pitt blocks 5-star back from transfer to ASU

Former Pittsburgh running back Rushel Shell, who was recruited to the school by Arizona State coach Todd Graham, has been released from his scholarship with the restriction he cannot transfer to ASU or Arizona, reports said Friday.

Graham recruited Shell, ranked by Scout.com as a five-star running back in the 2012 class, and got him to commit to Pitt before controversially leaving for the ASU job after just one season. Shell signed with Pitt anyway. According to ESPN's Joe Schad, Pitt blocked ASU because of Graham's presence at the school and blocked Arizona because coach Rich Rodriguez has former Pitt coaches on his staff.

While ASU's interest in Shell is not clear, multiple reports indicate his interest in the school, along with California and UCLA. Pitt also blocked Shell from transferring to any school within the ACC, a move common in the release process. Shell can appeal the restrictions of his release.

Shell, an Aliquippa, Pa., native out of Hopewell Senior High, rushed for 641 yards and

Panthers regrouping after loss of Adams, Zeigler

Pittsburgh coach Jamie Dixon says he understands why freshman center Steven Adams is heading to the NBA even if he remains a raw talent.

Adams announced Tuesday he would make himself eligible for the draft and plans to sign with an agent. Dixon said Wednesday there were strong family considerations that Adams took into account before making the decision. The 7-footer from New Zealand is the youngest of 18 children.

Dixon says he spoke to NBA personnel and is confident the 19-year-old Adams will be chosen. Adams is projected as a second-round pick after averaging 7.1 and 6.3 rebounds in 32 games for the Panthers.

The Panthers are also looking to replace guard Trey Zeigler, who is transferring.

Pittsburgh guard Trey Zeigler to transfer

Pittsburgh guard Trey Zeigler is on the move again. The school announced Tuesday the junior guard is transferring.

Zeigler averaged 4.4 points and 2.0 rebounds in 31 games for the Panthers this year after transferring from Central Michigan. Zeigler received a waiver from the NCAA to play right away at Pitt after his father, Ernie Zeigler, was fired as Central Michigan coach at the end of the 2011-12 season.

Zeigler saw his playing time and production dip significantly with the Panthers but he did score a season-high 18 points in a 93-55 victory over DePaul and helped lead Pitt to an upset of Syracuse on Feb. 2. Zeigler was expected to compete for the starting shooting guard spot next year.

Pitt RB Rushel Shell taking leave of absence

Pittsburgh running back Rushel Shell is taking time off from football to deal with what coach Paul Chryst is calling ''challenges'' off the field.

Chryst released a statement Thursday stressing that Shell ''very much remains a part of our family on a daily basis'' but is not participating in spring drills at the moment.

Shell rushed for 641 yards and four touchdowns during his freshman season last fall and is projected to be the starting tailback for the Panthers when they open fall camp. Chryst said his primary concern is for Shell's well-being and that Shell has the program's full support.

Shell, from Hopewell, Pa., located about two hours east of Pittsburgh, set the state career high school rushing record during his career at Hopewell High, rushing for 9,078 yards.

Doug Gottlieb flips out over flagrant foul called on Pitt’s Lamar Patterson (Video)

Pittsburgh’s Lamar Patterson was whistled for a flagrant foul during his team’s game against Wichita State on Thursday after he hit an opponent in the face with an elbow. The contact occurred as Patterson was driving to the basket and did not appear to be intentional. However, the call was correct in that even an unintentional elbow to an opponent is a Flagrant 1 by rule.
The officials made the right call, but that didn’t stop analyst Doug Gottlieb from having a meltdown over how much he hates the rule itself.
“This is the dumbest thing we do in basketball,” Gottlieb said. “This is dumb. This is absolutely, completely moronic. This is not a foul. It’s not a purposeful elbow. It’s a guy driving to the basket and his elbow happens to hit (Tyler Baker) in the mouth. That’s incidental contact. It’s considered a flagrant by letter of the rule book.
“You mean to tell me that in the process of driving to the basket he sees Ron Baker, lines him up and elbows him? Come on, he’s protecting the b
