Scott Shafer Has A Hardnosed Conversation With Mike Francesa

Syracuse football head coach Scott Shafer hit the links, again, Monday, as he participated in the New York Yankees/New Era Pinstripe Bowl Charity Golf Tournament at the Westchester Country Club.
When finished, the hardnosed coach joined the legendary Mike Francesa for a pretty lengthy chat on New York radio.
Here's a podcast of the interview, if you'd like to give it a listen. But, if you don't have time to listen here's a few highlights to wet your whistle.
1) To start, Mike Francesa takes way too much interest in Scott Shafer's background/resume. No disrespect to Shafer, but Francesa sounds like he's interviewing the most interesting man in the world -- "Oh really? Where you from? Oh really? That's Division III? Oh really? He's a good coach? Oh really?"
2) Francesa calls Syracuse (football) head coaching job a big deal. Though, Shafer has coached at Michigan and Stanford.
(This is no disrespect to SU. Just pointing out that Francesa acts like Shafer has never been a

Is George McDonald Trying to Hit a Florida-to-Syracuse Recruiting Geyser?

George McDonald is looking to mine the fertile grounds of Florida, and with his connections within the Sunshine State, he could be on the verge of hitting a geyser. Reportedly the Syracuse offensive coordinator offered two scholarships to players at Blanche Ely High (Pompano Beach), and giving a long look at a third.

Looks like SU has offered LB Terry McCray (’14) and wideout Therrell Gosier (’15). McCray is listed as a three-star OLB and has scholarships from Minnesota, Miami, Florida Atlantic and Tulane. He says the Hurricanes are at the top of his list, but he plans on visiting the Orange and Gophers before making a decision. Gosier is a huge target, listed at 6’6″, 200 lbs., and has an offer from USF.
Another tall WR, Kenneth Rawls (6’3″, 179 lbs.) was also a subject of GMcD’s scouting. He has offers from Minnesota, Bowling Green and Florida Atlantic, but says SU would become the front-runner if the Orange offered. W...

If Coach K Returns To Olympic Team, Jim Boeheim Expected To Follow

To continue the "what the heck is Jim Boeheim going to do in (situation XX)" speculation articles, today we're going to let you know, according to a weekend article by SI.com's Pete Thamel, the long-time Syracuse head coach may not be done coaching the U.S. Olympic Team.
This news comes nearly a full year after Boeheim wrote a journal entry in The Post-Standard admitting he was done with Olympics. Of course, at that time Boeheim thought Mike Krzyzewski was finished with international play, and Thamel's article says that may no longer be the case.

Krzyzewski said he hasn't made a final decision, but his openness to the position represents a significant change. For eight months, Krzyzewski has maintained he's not returning as USA Basketball's head coach.
On Saturday, Krzyzewski said he and USA Basketball Chairman Jerry Colangelo have been talking about his return "quite a bit."

How Realistic is the ACC Tournament in NYC at MSG or Barclays Center?

Will Syracuse be playing in a postseason conference tournament in the Big Apple once again? It’s possible after the murmurs that came out of the ACC meetings last week in Florida. Several coaches, athletic directors, and officials engaged in deep discussions over whether to move the ACC Championship from Greensboro to a major market such as NYC.

Follow The Fizz on Twitter for the latest SU offseason news

This possibility has been on the minds of teams and fans ever since realignment took place and destroyed the Big East we came to love. But does the southern-based ACC want to move away from its longtime center, and further from several of its original fan bases. The current contract with Greensboro expires after the 2015 season. Plus, MSG is starting to fill its calendar with a tourney for the new Big East, and the Barclays Center in Brooklyn is hosting the Atlantic-10. Jim Boeheim and Pitt head coach Jamie Dixon have been pushing the conference to explore playing in New York, an...

MCW’s NBA Future: Did He Help Himself By Staying Two Years at Syracuse?

Rant Sports Graphic
The most popular one and done player in Syracuse history dates back a decade to 2003 when Carmelo Anthony played a single season for the Orange, led them to the championship, and then left for the NBA Draft.
There are two rules that make a player eligible for the draft. The player must be at least 19 years old, he may not go directly from his senior year of high school to the NBA. For those with pro talent in high school, most play at least a year in college to strengthen the skills and improve their stock.
But should players be able to go directly to the NBA without the year in college? Dion Waiters is an example of an SU player who may have tested their pro stock directly from high school. Although talent-wise he may have been ready, the benefit of the two years in Syracuse was the mental maturity. For players who need to develop mentally and to polish their skills, college is the way to go.
Michael Carter-Williams may have been tempted to leave for the league ...

Syracuse Basketball Faces Big Odds, According to Vegas Bookmakers

Ladies and gentlemen, bettors of all ages, the 2013-14 college basketball betting odds are in, thanks to VegasInsider.com and Bovada. According to Bovada, the Syracuse Orange have 25-1 odds to win the National Championship, while VegasInsider.com has them at a get-out-your-check-books-right-now 40-1 long shots.
The favorite? You guessed it -- or maybe you didn't because I find it a bit surprising this team is the favorite considering what happened last year (though, most bettors are stupid so that is why the lines are the way they are sometimes) -- the Kentucky Wildcats, who are currently 5-1 favorites at both sites.
The Kansas Jayhawks, who just nabbed maybe the best freshman in the country, Andrew Wiggins, Tuesday, have the second-best odds (11-2) at Bovada, but are listed at 15-1 at VegasInsider.com.
Louisville, the defending champions, are 17-2 favorites probably thanks to the return of guard Russ Smith and Luke Hancock. The Cardinals will need to find a way to replace point guard Peyton Siva and cent

The 8 Most Depressing Things About Attending A Game At Your Alma Mater

2003
Every year, my friends and I make the trek back up to upstate New York to catch a basketball game at our alma mater, Syracuse University. While the cast of characters changes from year to year, there are five of us who are always up for the trip, regardless of what’s going on in our lives. And while the experience itself is “fun”, I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t also a tad depressing.
If you’re an alum at a big-time sports school, you know what I’m talking about. Things are different when you go back – especially the first time. Sadly, many of my college friends actually avoid it, out of fear of nostalgia.
If you’re thinking about heading back to your old stomping grounds to catch a game, here are the eight most depressing things you’ll experience.
1. You have to actually buy tickets
No more student ticket package/discount. Nope, you’ve got to log onto ticketmaster.com like the rest of the world and fight for your seats. And if you’ve chosen a big game, like Georgetown, you’l

Why Didn’t Syracuse Ever Offer Superstar Kansas Commit Andrew Wiggins?

Five-star phenom Andrew Wiggins committed to Kansas yesterday and has been called the most dominant high school player since LeBron James. The 6’7” superstar was on Syracuse’s radar last fall, but the Orange never even offered a scholarship to the Huntington Prep small forward. Why didn’t Jim Boeheim didn’t make a hard push at the nation’s top hoops recruit?

Follow The Fizz on Twitter for the latest Syracuse recruiting news

SU and Duke were two of a handful premier schools to not offer Wiggins. His decision came down to the Jayhawks, Florida State, UNC, Kentucky and Ohio State. Wiggins told Rivals.com he can now exhale.
“It’s just a weight lifted off my shoulders. I can relax now. The anticipation is over for everybody else. I was thinking a lot today about what I was going to say and how I was going to approach it. I just followed my heart. Kansas had my heart, so that’s where I wanted to go. I just felt like that was the right place for me.”

Jim Boeheim: The Sappiest Of Saps

The City of Syracuse's first couple, Jim and Juli Boeheim, were spotlighted Wednesday evening at Turning Stone with an event, sponsored by 40 Below, to celebrate Boeheim's 50 years in Central New York.
According to 40 Below's website, the object of the event was to have the Boeheims share stories about their history in Syracuse and where the region is going in the future.
In reality, the event was a way to make James Arthur Boeheim -- know nationally as the biggest curmudgeon in all of college basketball -- out to be a tall, old softy that cares dearly about his wife, the city of Syracuse and the Syracuse basketball program.
Luckily for you, Kim Brown, the Assistant Director for Alumni Programs, Career Services at Syracuse University, was there and Tweeted a lot of it.
Below is the best sample of what Kim and the official 40 Below Twitter account shared of the event, which included Boeheim admitting he's working on a book; queue the: "this might be the final year

Syracuse maintaining Big East ties

I think my personal record for offending someone on a first date is about four minutes after picking her up, which is pretty much how the Syracuse to the ACC era began. Head coach Jim Boeheim started by comparing the Big East Tournament and the ACC Tournament: "It's a great place for a tournament," he told the Birmingham News of New York. "Where would you want to go to to a tournament for five days? Let's see: Greensboro, North Carolina, or New York City? Jeez. Let me think about that one and get back to you."

On the reasons for conference expansion, he said, "this audience knows why we are doing this. There's two reasons: Money and football."

And while both answers were honest (and right) he wasn't exactly walking the party line (which is why we should like him). He also reminisced about all the teams he's spent his career playing against. "We've played St. John's for the 50 years I've been at Syracuse, and Geo...

Syracuse comedy troupe creates parody song of ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ (video)

A sketch comedy troupe based out of Syracuse called “Humor Whore” has done an outstanding job of creating a parody version of the Queen classic “Bohemian Rhapsody” featuring lyrics crafted to address all things related to Syracuse Orange basketball. Fittingly, the song is entitled, “Boeheimian Rhapsody,” a nod to head basketball coach Jim Boeheim’s name. Very clever.
The video for the parody song also attempts to capture the spirit and style of the original video for “Bohemian Rhapsody”:

The Syracuse Post-Standard reports that the entire project took Nick Ferreiro, 19, Samii Ruddy, 21, and Matt Del Greco, 22, about five weeks to create and complete, from writing the lyrics to filming the video. Well done, gents.

Another Set of Hands: Syracuse Gets Commitment From WR Sean Avant

247 Sports
Syracuse picks up another late commitment for the Class of ’13 as WR Sean Avant chooses the Orange over the weekend. Multiple reports say the Miramar, FL native selected SU over offers from Wake Forest and West Virginia, among others. Avant hails from the same hometown as Keon Lyn, and joins Corey Cooper and Corey Winfield as the incoming wide receiving corps.
The scouting report on Avant is very good hands, but needs to improve his game speed and separation. It seems likely George McDonald’s handprints are all over this addition. G-Mac has long beaten the bushes of Florida, and was at the U last year, just a half hour drive from Miramar. You have to imagine he’s very good at selling his own offense to playmakers like Avant.
SU loses its top two receivers in Alec Lemon and Marcus Sales to graduation, meaning the influx of pass-catchers will help. Jarrod West turned heads in the Spring Game and is competing for the top spot on the depth chart. There is also Arkansas transf...

C.J. Fair Returns to Syracuse, Restores Faith in NBA Decision Process

SU Athletics
Sanity prevailed in C.J. Fair’s decision on whether to jump to the NBA.
“After talking it over with my family and my coaches, I decided another year at Syracuse was best for me. I’m excited about working hard with my teammates to put together another great season and graduating has also been a goal of mine.”
First off, this gives the Orange a major boost going into next season. The team would’ve been left woefully short of experience and go-to scoring options. But Fair’s return gives the squad a nice bridge from the Final Four edition to a locker room stuffed with transfers and incoming freshman.
Secondly, for Fair this is the prudent move. We discussed it at length here on The Fizz yesterday. With no guarantee to get drafted in the first-round (in fact, almost every pundit projected him to get picked in the second), the risk was just too high. You’re working without a guaranteed contract, and having to constantly fight roster cuts and unknown financial future. He would...

NBA.com’s David Aldridge Claims In Article That SU Forward C.J. Fair Has Declared For The NBA Draft

suathletics.com
Typo, or leak?
NBA.com’s David Aldridge wrote an article yesterday about the small forwards of the 2013 class, claiming that Syracuse star C.J. Fair had already declared for the NBA Draft. While many believe Fair will in fact go pro, he hasn’t made any decision public, though he is scheduled to have a press conference this week to update the school and fans on his situation.

“For now, since McDermott is still deciding, I’m not putting him on any Board. But if he does, I’m going to start him as a power forward and see how the two months before the Draft shake out. The same goes for Syracuse junior C.J. Fair, who has declared for the Draft.”

Of course, Syracuse fans have been tweeting at Aldridge trying to get clarification on whether the declaration was a typo or not. Aldridge has not responded or updated his piece, which either means he’s an infrequent tweeter or he’s playing dumb – it’s tough to tell which.
Fair led the Orange in scoring, rebounding and 3-point F...

Syracuse walk-on takes banana challenge

Syracuse reserve guard Russ DeRemer proved today that oranges aren’t the only fruit he’s fond of. While Sarah Kogod, a sports blogger for The Washington Post, talked with players at the Verizon Center Wednesday, she stumbled upon DeRemer’s passion for food-related challenges. Before long, DeRemer was shoveling down bananas as teammates cheered him on. Fellow guard Nolan Hart served as time-keeper and forward Albert Nassar handed DeRemer the bananas. When all was said and done, DeRemer had eaten four bananas. Now that’s a lot of potassium.
