Sultan Muhammad hit a 3-pointer with 1.7 seconds remaining as Green Bay defeated Illinois-Chicago 64-63 in the quarterfinals of the Horizon League tournament on Friday night.

Two free throws from Gary Talton capped an 11-3 run that gave Illinois-Chicago a 63-61 lead with 7 seconds left. But Keifer Sykes took the ball across the mid-court line and kicked it to Muhammad on the right wing, where he nailed a 24-footer for the game-winner.

Alec Brown scored 17 points for the fourth-seeded Phoenix (18-14), who will face top-seeded Valparaiso Saturday in the semifinals. Sykes added 12 points and Muhammad had 10.

The fifth-seeded Flames (17-15) got 23 points from Hayden Humes and 12 apiece from Josh Crittle and Talton.

Humes scored seven straight points to erase a six-point Phoenix lead and put Chicago ahead 59-58 with 3:05 remaining. Brown hit 1 of 2 free throws to tie it up and the teams then traded baskets, setting up the last-second heroics.

UIC (that's the University of Illinois at Chicago) ruined Colorado State's vacation in the Windy City over the weekend by upsetting the Rams, 64-55. The win cemented the Flames (their mascot is a reference to the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, which originated a few blocks from campus) as a legitimate mid-major contender from the newly Butler-less Horizon League and adds to a resume that also includes wins over Iona, Northwestern and Mercer.

In the Horizon League's preseason poll UIC was picked to finish second to last in head coach Howard Moore's third season after winning seven and then eight games in his first two seasons. Now, at 8-1 after winning seven straight, a week after they debuted at No. 22 in the CollegeInsider.com mid-major top 25 and at No. 15 in the ESPN College Basketball Nation's Mid-Major Power Rankings, the Flames are smashing expectations.

Ill.-Chicago 50, Northwestern 44

Josh Crittle's go-ahead basket with 53 seconds remaining helped UIC to a 50-44 upset of Northwestern on Saturday.

Crittle finished with a team-high 13 points, and Gary Talton's two free throws with 29 seconds left sealed the win for the Flames (6-1).

The Wildcats committed 16 turnovers and were just 10 of 20 from the free-throw line. Alex Olah missed two free throws with 3:16 remaining, and on the Flames' ensuing possession, Marc Brown converted an easy layup to give UIC a 44-42 lead. The Flames never trailed again.

Joey Miller's jumper tied the game at 35 with 10:23 left, erasing UIC's five-point second-half deficit. Two minutes later, Brown's three-point play gave the Flames a 38-35 lead.

Northwestern was fortunate to be leading at the half, 26-25, thanks to 29 percent first-half shooting by the Flames.

Drew Crawford scored a game-high 18 points for the Wildcats (6-2).

Putting out the Flames | UWM 68, UIC 55 Panthers use hot shooting, stout D

Tenacious defense has been the calling card of the UW-Milwaukee men's basketball team all season. Lately, the Panthers have been shooting the threepointer as well as any team in college basketball , too.

It's a combination that's hard to beat.

Just ask Illinois-Chicago, which got run over in a firstround Horizon League tournament game at the Klotsche Center on Tuesday night.

The Panthers (20-12) held the Flames to 14 points on 22.2% shooting in the first half, made 11 of 25 three-point shots in the game and cruised to a 68-55 victory.

The Flames (8-22) scored the first two points, which might have been their biggest highlight of the night. Milwaukee then went on a 34-4 run highlighted by 3 threepoint plays by senior guard Ryan Allen and 7 three-pointers.

The 6-foot-3 Allen added an exclamation mark with a monster two-handed dunk on a breakaway.

"It's a great feeling," said junior forward James Haarsma.

"It's what you work for every day, is to get on runs like that and

There’s Deron Williams (Illini, Nets) and Now Darrin Williams (UIC)
