The Darren Hamilton Destruction Tour Heads to Livingstone College

I first learned about this breaking story this morning while doing the show, and I feel sicker about it now then I did just a few hours ago. Dr. Darren Hamilton will resign his position as Alcorn State’s director of athletics to accept the same job at Livingstone College.
It’s not the fact that he’s been [...]

Marching 100 Slow Jams

A lot of young people today get into black college culture primarily because of black college marching bands. Their ability to meld contemporary hits with technical precision makes them among the best musical ensembles that you’ll find anywhere on the planet.
But when these bands slow it down on you, when they break out the old [...]

Stillman College won its third-consecutive SIAC baseball championship over the weekend, defeating Albany State University in 15-12 affair that was not a close as the score might indicate. The Tigers were paced by Tournament MVP, Shannon Smith, who joined teammates Sloan Simmons and Wes Windham on the all-tournament team.

American History

This year, I spent my mid/late January a little differently than I typically do. For the past several years of my life, I've made one or two trips to Atlanta around this time: One is for MLK weekend to retrace the footsteps of Black history and American history (a trip that has been an annual program at UNCG) and the other is for the Honda Battle of the Bands to see excellence in the art of marching. This year neither of those took place, yet I found myself traveling about the same distance north instead of south to Washington, DC. Once again for Black history and American history and to see excellence in the art of marching. I attended the inauguration of President Barack Obama.

My full account of the trip is found here in my personal LiveJournal, but given this is my sports/marching blog, I'll concentrate on the marching aspect. In addition to the historic inauguration of a Black president and a Delawarean VP, my primary motivation for making the trip to DC and braving the crowds was the parade. My alma mater, The Alexis I. duPont High School Tiger Marching Band, was making their third inaugural appearance (they also marched for Carter and George H.W. Bush). Beyond that, there was an amazing lineup: FAMU's Marching 100, Ohio State's TBDBITL, and The Cadets, to name a few.

I was fortunate in that my interests were a little different than the bulk of the crowd. After waiting for hours to get onto the parade route, I was probably about 10 people back from the barricades at the road. Not a bad draw, even better if you're closer to 6'5" than 5'6". Then, a funny thing happened. For those not familiar with the inaugural parade format, the president and vice president lead the parade, and then there's motorcade/filler while they make their way to their viewing stand, from which they watch the rest of the parade. Well President Obama passed, and then about half the crowd left. I was maybe 3 folks back by the time Vice President Joe Biden passed (I could see him quite clearly, but then, me and Joe go way back. ) After Biden passed, we were probably down to about 10% of the original crowd, and I was right up to the barricade for an excellent spot for the rest of the parade.

It was a great parade. Highlights include the sizable Delaware contingent, the abundance of HBCU bands, several other great college and high school bands, the Gay and Lesbian Band Association, and the two drum corps present, the Colts and Cadets. It was great to be present both for history and a helluva parade.

I'd like to thank the little guys

Thanks to USF Football, I know who to see to get my car serviced, order a pizza online, smell good, or get free local and long distance.

The past four football seasons, USF has attended the Meineke Car Care Bowl, the Papajohns.com Bowl, the Brut Sun Bowl, and will soon be playing in the Magic Jack St. Petersburg Bowl.

Far be it for me to look a gift horse in the mouth, but damn there's alot of bowls.

In other postseason news, I went to see USF face defending champion Wake Forest in men's soccer. We got blown out, 5-0, on Wake's home pitch. We were clearly outmatched and it was cold, but it did feel good to be able to be there and support my team.

USF's first bowl game, Meineke Car Care in 2005, was the first in a string opportunities to support one of my teams in the postseason. Since then, I've had the opportunity to attend:

UMBC vs. Delaware-Men's Lacrosse quarterfinals, 2007
Delaware vs. Delaware State-Football first round, 2007
UMBC vs. Georgetown-Men's basketball first round, 2008
USF vs. Wake Forest-Men's soccer quarterfinals, 2008

I also missed a few USF bowl games, a few UMBC lacrosse tourney appearances, and a few UNCG soccer tourney appearances. Sadly, each of the games I attended featuring an alma mater of mind ended in a loss. UD/Del State I attended just as a fan of football, history, and the state of Delaware. They've also all been games of convenience--the bowl game, the basketball game, and the soccer game, were all here in NC, while UMBC-UD happened to be in MD while I was up there for for my cousin's graduation, and UD/Del State was over Thanksgiving break when I was back home in the First State. I need to step my game up and make the postseason road trip a reality!

DCI Needs a TV Deal

Thesis: DCI's Summer Music Game should be regularly televised, preferably on a college sports network.

Disclaimer: While I'm a band dork to the gills, I am not now, nor have I ever been or do I ever plan to be, in the camp that believes that marching band or drum corps are sports. True enough, I post marching content on a sports site but that's because I talk about both in my blog. And the fact is, several sports networks (I'm looking in your direction, worldwide leader) play non-sports content on a regular basis. That said, some facts to support my statement:

-With the addition of Fan Network, DCI and its member corps are used to providing content throughout the summer and broadcasting entire shows.
-College sports channels, by their very nature, are starved for new content throughout the summer months.
-72% of DCI corps members are full-time college students (so says DCI)

Seem like a natural pairing to anyone else? Because it sure does to me.

New Gator TV Deal puts SEC/Raycom Relationship on Life Support

Reading between the lines in an article published Tuesday in the Orlando Business Journal, it looks like the new television contract with the Southeastern Conference will have some new dance partners.

Ahem... quote...

"The SEC is set to announce its new television contracts in August, industry sources say. By all accounts, CBS will retain the broadcast portion and ESPN will retain the cable portion, with ESPNU and ESPN360 also getting rights that were previously reserved for syndication partners."

Translation- looks like the 20-year relationship with Raycom may be a thing of the past. This also sounds a lot like the deal the National Hockey League signed with SportsChannel America way back when. The network waved a lot of money at the league at the dinner table and signed their viewership away. ESPNU is currently listed as having a reach of 20 million households. Their parent network, on the other hand, clocks in at 96-million households.

So yesterday I spent 807 dollars on spice girls reunion tickets. Ridiculous, I know...but hear me out here. I won some sort of lottery to even BUY the tickets, so I bought as many as I could and a teammate said she was going to sell any that we didn't use for double on ebay. So lets hope that pans out haha.
Otherwise, I have just been up to tons of school. I have a geography lab midterm tomorrow and need to study big time. The girls are coming over to tackle it together....we had the bright idea to all take these geography classes together. Yeah....we'll see how that pans out too.
I think my family is coming up this weekend! After a three midterm week and not seeing them for a month and a half, it will be really nice. Ah well Spoogle's knocking at my door. Off to study. Wish me luck! :D
by the way here is Diana Taurasi's blog.....she is pretty much my hero so check her out....

Michigan no longer oufitted by Nike

One of Nike's original endorsements and one of the most popular brand in all of college sports is switching to Adidas

"Michigan ended one of the longest standing relationships between a college athletic program and a corporate sponsor today when it announced a eight-year deal with adidas starting with the 2008-09 season. The contract includes a $6.5 MM signing bonus and a $3.8 MM in cash annually"

Hard to imagine that Nike didn't have the cash to match the Adidas deal

Skip Bayless, Stop Talking About Taryne Mowatt Like That

When debating the ESPY winner for Best Female Athlete, I was all ready to begin lauding Arizona University softball pitcher Taryne Mowatt, for the obvious statistical and physical reasons. Then along comes Skip Bayless, saying what I was about to say, and then adding "and she's cute too." Guh! Unclean images.

We might just yet win our Championship!

It just wasn't our year this year in Basketball?but that is why we can always rely on the one program that makes girls cry regularly. Its Wildcat Softball. And they don't mess around normally. After losing Game 1, the girl's clawed their way back into it in Game 2:

NCAA Baseball Tourney Selection - An Interview with the Director of baseball
