I'm A Celebrity, Please Get Me Out Of This Interview

The NBC sure to be blockbuster hit, "I'm A Celebrity....Get Me Out Of Here", kicks off next week, and some of the show's "stars" have been doing press this week. Two of those people are Patti Blagoevich and John Salley. Both showed up on the oh-so-entertaining Good Day L.A. via satellite recently, and after some awkward questions on delay, host Steve Edwards decided to try and be funny at John Salley's expense. Let's just say the joke didn't go over too...

Avengers Leaving What's Left Of Arena League

((HT: LA Times/Sam Farmer))

The only pro football team in Los Angeles is calling it quits. After nine seasons, the L.A. Avengers are terminating their membership in the Arena Football League, team owner Casey Wasserman said Sunday ((pictured, thanks Nick Laham/Getty)).

The move comes four months after the AFL voted to suspend the 2009 season to devise a new business model in hopes of restarting in 2010. That plan has not materialized, and the 16-team league is set to vote today on a new collective bargaining agreement with its players union. The Avengers did not want to participate in that vote, Wasserman said, without a defined business plan for the future of the league.
"It's disappointing, because I don't think it was necessary to get to this point," said Wasserman, whose team was acquired for $5 million in 1999 and began playing in 2000. The Avengers won a division title in 2005 and made four playoff appearances.

The league requires team owners to vote on such a termination request, but it's highly unlikely the decision to disband will be reversed.Wasserman sent an e-mail Saturday to Jim Renacci, owner of the Columbus Destroyers and the league's de facto commissioner, alerting him of the decision.
The Avengers are not the first team to shut its doors within the last year. The New Orleans VooDoo, owned by Tom Benson of the New Orleans Saints, ceased operations in October. The league has been without a permanent commissioner since last July, when David Baker surprisingly resigned after 12 seasons. Ed Policy, the interim commissioner, stepped down earlier this month.
As for the future of pro football in L.A., Wasserman said: "The fans in L.A. have been passionate and supportive of professional football, and I hope one day we can all share in the excitement of its return to Los Angeles."
Those of us at OSG HQ think this is only one more step to the end of the Arena Football dynamic as we know it. If you dig the sport, there's always af2. Their business model is, probably, the one that the big boys should have paid attention to in the first place.

AFL Veteran Talks Bluntly About League's Suspension, Management and Harsh Reality Facing Players

When the league's owners voted on indefinitely suspending the 2009 season this past December, Will Holder was one of the vocal players who expressed his frustration with the way the AFL was run and the manner in which the players were given little notice of its uncertain future.

We caught up with Will to talk about the AFL, its failures, its frustrations and its players' prospects for the future.

Zambrano's Moustache + Statistics + Advice = Must Read

Many would argue that the four best words in the English language are
"I love you _____," (fill in the blank with the last name of
spouse/significant other/etc.(Ed. Note--What??)) but FantasyPros911
begs to differ; all you need to say is "pitchers and catchers report "
and we salivate. It's the beginning of spring and signals that the
snow is decreasing, the arena football season is about to begin
(although the Arena Football League has postponed their 2009 season,
the Continental Indoor Football League still exists!) but most
importantly fantasy baseball season has begun.

Owners flock to stores to purchase the draft magazine they think may put them over the top (Rhett Oldham article plug goes here)
and some realize that the real answer is the FantasyPros911.com Draft
Guide. The fact of the matter is that 95% of Americans will be
receiving an average of $13 a week with the new "stimulus" bill and it
just so happens that our Draft Guide is only $5. So hell, buy two.

Soul may yet be able to defend Arena Championship

The Philadelphia Soul may be the final Arena Football League Champions, although some news came out today that could change that. Despite rumors swirling that the AFL was going to shut down for the 2009 season, it appears that there is still a chance the league will continue on. On Wednesday, the league directors voted to not suspend the league for next season, but that still doesn't guarantee that the AFL will continue....

Bad News for Arena Football Fans

Today is a sad day for the Arena Football League (AFL) as the 2009 AFL season has been suspended and it seems that the league's ongoing existence is in flux as well. This comes two days after the NFL announced layoffs of 150 people.

In my mind, the trouble stems from a few elements:

- The quality and values of teams is too differentiated. The San Jose Sabercats, for instance, are successful and well funded - but the lower quadrant of the AFL is totally different.

A Soul Win Does Not Mean The Curse Is Lifted

No!

I did not wait 25 years, watch another city lift the championship trophy almost 100 times, and suffer through a Jim McMahon/Jeff Kemp/Pat Ryan/Brad Goebel Eagles team to have an Arena Football League team be the ones who get the glory for finally bringing a championship to this city.

So I better not see a parade down Broad street next week with the city painted teal and black, or have Benjamin Franklin Parkway turned in Matt D'Orazio Way. And while team co-owner John Bon Jovi can throw a free concert if he wants to, do not dare deck out the Billy Penn statue in 80s era Bon Jovi attire.

Let's take this for what it is: a minor league team won a championship - something that's been done in this city many times before. In hockey the Phantoms have won two Calder Cups. In indoor soccer the Kixx have won two MISL championships (most recently last year). And in lacrosse the Wings have one six championships, while the Barrage have won three. Yet I don't recall seeing any of these championships featured on SportsNite on Comcast SportsNet. And why is that? Because they're not major sports.

So while over the next day or so you'll read about how this is Philadelphia's first championship in 25 years, or that the curse is over, or that Arena Football is a "legitimate sport," know that this is people grasping at straws. Repeat after me. "This. Doesn't. Count."

But hey congrats Philadelphia Soul on winning your championship, just don't try telling me it means anything. Because until the Eagles, Flyers, Phillies or Sixers bring a championship to the city the truth is Billy Penn is still standing on his perch above city hall putting the kibosh on our fun.

The New Soul of Philadelphia

Move over Eagles, the Philadelphia Soul are the hottest football team in Philly, and the newest city champs, having won ArenaBowl 22 Sunday. The Soul beat the reigning champion San Jose SaberCats 59-56 in their first ArenaBowl, withstanding a tense late 4th quarter comeback by San Jose.

Both teams scored on their opening drives of the game. Soul Quarterback Matt D'Orazio threw seven touchdowns and ran for one other score. Philadelphia scored on all six of its first-half possessions and took the lead for good with three consecutive touchdowns in the second quarter.

That's not to say that the SaberCats gave up. San Jose made things very tense in the final minutes, scoring 14 points in 11 seconds in the final minute of the game. Philadelphia scored with 40 seconds left in regulation, after receiving the benefit of a defensive pass interference call on 4th down on a play in the end zone. D'Orazio then hooked up with Phil Bogle three plays later to seemingly seal the game for the Soul at 59-42 with the extra point.

That is when things got dicey. San Jose quarterback Mark Grieb connected with Rodney Wright to bring the game to 59-49. The SaberCats were unsuccessful on the 2-point conversion. They were, however, successful on the onside kick the following play, downing the ball on the Philadelphia 14. San Jose was down by 10 with 28 seconds to go. Eleven seconds later that lead would be reduced to just four, with a touchdown pass to Jason Geathers. San Jose connected on their two point conversion and made it a three point game at 59-56.

Despite another onside kick, the SaberCats would get no closer. Philadelphia recovered the kickoff and was successfully able to run out the remaining time on the clock to win their first championship in their short five year history.

The Soul's victory was the first championship in Philadelphia since the AHL Philadelphia Phantoms won the Calder Cup in 2005. There hasn't been a championship in football in Philadelphia since the Eagles won the NFL Championship in 1960, before the establishment of the SuperBowl.

While the Soul's victory will likely not garner the same kind of attention and enthusiasm from Philadelphia's fanbase that a Phillies, Eagles, Sixers, or Flyers championship would, it is still an exciting achievement worthy of note and recognition. The Soul have battled through a tough season, one that looked dour early when first string quarterback Tony Graziani sprained his ankle in Week 3, this after he set the franchise record with touchdowns in a game with nine. Newly acquired second string quarterback D'Orazio played most of the remainder of the season and held this team together to a 13-3 record.

It was a remarkable story and on behalf of everyone here at Hot Stove Philly I send our congratulations to the Philadelphia Soul, their owner Jon Bon Jovi, and General Manager Ron Jaworski, the 2008 Arena Football League Champions!

AFL: Conference Championship Match Ups

The Arena Football Conference Championship games are set and both are shaping up to have some great story lines. There are a few unlikely squads still in it so we have laid out the match ups and video highlights of how they got there.....

12 Steps to Football Season

Alright, sports addicts, the NBA Finals are almost over. You know what that means: a long, hot summer of nothing but baseball until the NFL starts. You'll get your fix watching training camp coverage and even Arena Football. You may even find yourself wishing NFL Europe was still around.

I'm here to tell you that it's time to expand your horizons. There is more to sports than Football and Basketball. Summertime offers you, in the immortal words of the Fresh Prince, "time to sit back and unwind." For sports addicts, that means trying out new sports and getting in to sports that you may have casually followed in the past.

In chronological order, here are 12 sporting events that will help you bridge the gap between the end of the NBA finals and the kickoff of the NFL season:

1. Euro 2008 Final June 29
The European soccer championships are already off to a great start, and the final should be an exciting matchup. Germany-Italy would be a great clash of the titans. Spain-Portugal would be a battle between underachieving neighbors. No matter who plays, it will be worth watching.

2. Wimbledon June 23 - July 6
The fortnight is always special. This year there should be some added drama, with Rafa Nadal trying to finally upend Roger Federer on grass, and Federer trying to prove that he's still the best in the world (even though he sucks on clay). On the women's side, Maria Sharapova will try to reclaim her #1 ranking from Ana Ivanovic. Even if you don't like tennis, that should be worth watching just for the eye candy.

3. UFC 86 July 5
Rampage Jackson and Forrest Griffin. If you haven't been watching UFC before now, this would be a good time to shell out the $40 (or find a good sports bar) and start. Rampage and Forrest have been the two coaches on this season of The Ultimate Fighter, so the tension for this fight has been building up for a while. The under card looks pretty good as well, with lots of fighters you know from watching past seasons of The Ultimate Fighter. I'm excited to see Corey Hill and his freakishly long arms fight again.

4. MLB All Star Game July 15
Baseball always seems to do the All Star Game right (except when it ends in a tie), and they will certainly pull out all the stops for this one. The All Star celebration will be part of the Yankee Stadium farewell tour this year, so you can expect lots of tributes to the history of that old building. Even if you hate the Yankees, that should be pretty special.

5. British Open July 17 - 20
Golf may be a bit slow at times, but nothing compares to the drama of the final day of a Major, especially with the passionate British fans looking on.

6. Tour de France: L'Alpe-d'Huez July 23
Yes, the Tour de France is still exciting even without Lance Armstrong. And even with the constant doping allegations. Maybe this year the winner will beyond suspicion. Regardless, the Alp d'Huez is the most famous mountain on the Tour, and this year it comes as the final mountain stage. Whoever gets to the top with the lead will likely ride into Paris with the Yellow Jersey.

7. Brickyard 400 July 27
After Daytona, this is the race that all NASCAR drivers want to win the most. There's so much history at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and it's great to see the winner get emotional as he kisses the yard of bricks.

8. X Games 14 July 31 - August 3
Like the Olympics, but with more tattoos. And skateboards. And uses of the word "gnarly" by the announcers. It's hard to believe that the X Games have been around for 14 years, but even at that ripe old age they still feel fresh compared to most sporting events. If nothing else, they always exude a feeling of fun. It's obvious that everyone at X Games is enjoying themselves, which is more than you can say for Tiger Woods.

9. Summer Olympics Opening Ceremonies August 8
The sporting world has been watching the preparations for the Beijing Olympics carefully for 7 years now. Even still, no one is quite sure what to expect when the games finally begin. If nothing else, you can be sure that the Chinese will make the opening ceremonies something to remember (and not in a bad way like the Euro 2008 ceremonies).

10. Olympic Basketball Final August 23
Will the US make it back to the top level of the Olympic podium in basketball, or has the rest of the world passed us by for good? Will Coach K end up in a dank Chinese prison camp for cursing at the referees (fingers crossed)?

11. Little League World Series Final August 24
The Little League World Series is always a chance for sportswriters to get all sappy and teary-eyed about the way sports are supposed to be played. I don't buy in to all of that, but it's really fun to watch how excited the kids get during the games. Even if the quality of play isn't all that great, at least the players really care about the game.

12. European Grand Prix August 27
Formula 1 can be an acquired taste, but the European Grand Prix this year should be exciting for any sports fan. The race will be run on a temporary street circuit around the America's Cup port in Valencia, Spain. By that point in the season, there could still be a close battle for the drivers' championship between Lewis Hamilton, Kimi Raikkonen, Felipe Massa and Robert Kubica. The narrow street course will provide plenty of action and excitement.

There you have it, enough sports to fill the void between the NBA and the NFL. Now go out and plan a barbecue around one of these events. And don't forget to invite me.

Nebraska football Reaches Darkest Depth Yet 76 to 39

76 to 39, Seventy-six to thirty-nine, 76 points in a Big 12 North football game; 76 is now a number that will be ingrained into Husker football fans for a long time. It will be a fitting remembrance of the Bill Callahan/Kevin Cosgrove era for decades, just as Osborne's 255 wins in 25 years is a number to remember, but for different reasons. I thing that 76 should stand for, is that it is/was the final reason for AD Tom Osborne to make sure that the 2007 season is the last one in Lincoln for Bill Callahan and company, for that, there is no doubt.

The game started with a glimmer of hope as new quarterback Joe Gantz led the huskers down the field for the games first touchdown, capping the drive with a 3-yard run. Gantz, a 4-year junior from Palos Heights, Ill then came right back and gave the Huskers their second lead 14-7 mid-way through the first quarter, then the bottom dropped out and Kansas scored on 10 straight possessions and Gantz's 400 plus passing day and the Huskers 39 points on the road, which in many a situation would have been more than enough to earn a victory, was mere window dressing as the Husker defense once again showed they had more holes in it than a sieve as they gave up 572 yards to go along with the 76 points. In fact the Kansas defense had only given up a total of 33 points at home this season in their previous 5 match-ups.

Kansas sophomore Todd Reesing also connected with a bevy of receivers on the afternoon, orchestrating a fine-tuned Kansas onslaught by completing 30-of-41 passes for 354 yards and six touchdown passes. Looks to me that Reesing should be a lock to be the 5th straight Big 12 offensive player of the week after playing Cosgrove's defense. You know the tough part is going to be selecting the Big 12 offensive player of the year after the season is over won't it? Besides the 76 points being a record, the 48 at half time is also a record. Too be sure the Huskers were beaten badly in the past, for example in 2003 we lost to Texas 31-7, to Kansas State 38-9, but those games now look like "nail-biters" compared to 76-39. For more than 90 plays the Jayhawks had only 1 penalty, no sacks allowed and no turnovers.

I tell you that when I first saw the score running on the ESPNEWS ticker, I thought it might be a basketball score that would be possible between these two schools, but not in football. Every week I speculate if our defense had finally reached the bottom, for they say in order to make progress, you have to first hit rock bottom. Well I sure hope to GOD that 76 is rock-bottom, it has to be.

KU's defense, which looked baffled early by some unexpected passing formations, made enough adjustments to come up with four straight turnovers and put the game out of reach. Now there's a concept for Callahan and Cosgrove in particular, make adjustments during the game in order to stop the other team. Hmmm think that might be what is called "coaching"? 76-39 do they have these sort of scores in conference such as the Big 10, SEC, ACC, or Pac-10; this was not Arena Football.

If Osborne had not made up his mind about the coaching staff, this game had to do it for him. Many of us Husker faithful have now come to expect this type of game, that we have sunk to the level of Baylor that beating such as these have become the norm, that the other big 12 schools don't even consider it to be an accomplishment by beating the Huskers anymore. Someday Husker football will return, but that day seems a long way after seeing 76 this Saturday. November 24, 2007 is 3 weeks away that will be the day after the final game of the season against Colorado. That is now the date that all Big Red Fans have circled on their calendar. As this should be the final day in Lincoln for Mr. Bill and company. GBR!

2007 Week 1 Wide Receiver Rankings

Leaping acrobatic catches, deep bombs landing gracefully in the arms of a receiver as he stays in stride, one handed grabs?these are a few of my favorite things. And, it's why week 1 can't come quick enough.

At this point and time the wide receiving landscape is perfectly even. No receptions have been made. No yards racked up, and no end zone dances danced. Everyone has a clean slate. So who will rise to the top after week 1. Will it be a familiar name like Steve Smith or Marvin Harrison, or will all fantasy owners be scrambling for the no-name WR, who racked up 100 yards and a score come Monday? To see the Bruno Boys take on the week 1 wide receivers, simply read the Bruno Boys Fantasy Wide Receiver Rankings below.

??????????????????????????????-
1. Steve Smith (CAR) at St. Louis

Last year, Smith missed week 1. This year, not only will he be playing, he's got a fantastic match-up vs. a not-so-great Rams D on turf. 2007 will start off with a bang.
Point Projection: 21 points
??????????????????????????????-
2. Marvin Harrison (IND) vs. New Orleans

Opening night during prime time. How can you not like Harrison in what promises to be a high-scoring affair?
Point Projection: 19 points
??????????????????????????????-
3. Terrell Owens (DAL) vs. New York Giants

T.O.'s biggest accomplishment this off-season - being a non-story. The lack of media attention allowed Owens to focus on his game and have a solid training camp. Results will follow.
Point Projection: 18 points
??????????????????????????????-
4. Reggie Wayne (IND) vs. New Orleans

He's 1A to Harrison's 1 in Indy. In this shootout against the Saints, both will get their numbers.
Point Projection: 16 points
??????????????????????????????-
5. Larry Fitzgerald (ARI) at San Francisco

Many a team's week 1 fate may come down to this Monday Night match-up, and if it's Fitzgerald you're banking on to get you the win, you shouldn't be disappointed.
Point Projection: 16 points
??????????????????????????????-
6. Torry Holt (STL) vs. Carolina

It's no secret that Holt isn't at 100%, but even his 70% should be good enough to make him a top tier receiver. Until we have reason to believe otherwise, Holt will remain near the top of this list.
Point Projection: 16 points
??????????????????????????????-
7. Roy Williams (DET) at Oakland

With Mike Martz calling the plays and the running back situation not exactly hammered out, the Lions will pass on Sunday. Many of those throws will be directed Williams' way.
Point Projection: 16 points
??????????????????????????????-
8. Chad Johnson (CIN) vs. Baltimore

It's always a bit disheartening to see one of your top guys set to face the Ravens or Da' Bears in week 1. Still, you got to start Johnson because he always has that superstar potential no matter the opponent.
Point Projection: 15 points
??????????????????????????????-
9. Marques Colston (NO) at Indianapolis

Really, Thursday Night's game has the potential to end with an Arena Football League score. Accordingly, as the Saints' number 1 receiver, Colston's sophomore campaign should get off to a fast start.
Point Projection: 15 points
??????????????????????????????-
10. T.J. Houshmandzadeh (CIN) vs. Baltimore

Ok, he might not bring you a "CHAMPIONSHIP" just yet, but be sure to play Housh in week 1. He was in double digits last season in both games against the Ravens.
Point Projection: 14 points
??????????????????????????????-
11. Donald Driver (GB) vs. Philadelphia

Driver gave all his owners a scare when he had to be carted off the field during the Packers' preseason game against the Jags. The injury though turned out to be just a sprain, meaning Driver will be on the field week 1. And, as usual, he'll be Favre's favorite target.
Point Projection: 14 points
??????????????????????????????-
12. Andre Johnson (HOU) vs. Kansas City

It's time to see if QB Matt Schaub is an upgrade over David Carr. Our guess, at least for week 1 against a poor KC defense, is that he will be. That's good news for Johnson.
Point Projection: 14 points
??????????????????????????????-
13. Javon Walker (DEN) at Buffalo

A pleasant treat for his fantasy owners in 2006, Walker should give them plenty to be happy about after Week 1 of the 2007 season, especially since CB Nate Clements no longer suits up for Buffalo.
Point Projection: 13 points
??????????????????????????????-
14. Plaxico Burress (NYG) at Dallas

Plaxico Burress and the word inconsistent are basically synonyms; however, in each of the Giants two meetings with the Cowboys in 2006, Plax found pay dirt. Look for him to nab another score here in week 1.
Point Projection: 13 points
??????????????????????????????-
15. Anquan Boldin (ARI) at San Francisco

The Cardinals passing game will have a bit tougher time against the Niners this year with the 49ers' off-season addition of CB Nate Clements. But, Clements is only one CB, which means he can only guard one member of the dynamic duo at a time.
Point Projection: 13 points
??????????????????????????????-
16. Darrell Jackson (SF) vs. Arizona

Playing for the Seahawks, Jackson use to tear up the Cardinals (in 2006, he had double digit fantasy points in both match-ups with Arizona). Can he do the same as a member of the 49ers? If healthy, count on it.
Point Projection: 13 points
??????????????????????????????-
17. Hines Ward (PIT) at Cleveland

A broken nose, while painful, is not the type of injury that prevents a WR from being effective. Look for the Steelers to get things going on the right foot in 2007 and Hines Ward being a big part of that.
Point Projection: 12 points
??????????????????????????????-
18. Lee Evans (BUF) vs. Denver

While Evans has the potential to be a top fantasy receiver in 2007, a week 1 match-up against the Broncos and the likes of Champ Bailey and Dre' Bly won't help his cause.
Point Projection: 12 points
??????????????????????????????-
19. Randy Moss (NE) at New York Jets

Due to all the time Moss missed during training camp, he's a risky play in week 1. Not only will he not be familiar with his new teammates, he also may not be in football playing condition. Still, there is a chance that he gets on that field and puts up big numbers just to prove the Pats were right to get him. Because of that, he should be in your line-up if healthy.
Point Projection: 11 points
??????????????????????????????-
20. Santana Moss (WAS) vs. Miami

A large part of Moss's success early on in 2007 will be dependent upon QB Jason Campbell's play. As Campbell continues to get his feet wet, look for him to rely on his veteran WR often.
