Drag racer Brown steps into Carpenter's IndyCar

Antron Brown joked that he wouldn't mind making a couple of left-handed turns the next time he's on the track. Ed Carpenter thought it'd be fun to ramp up the speed by about 100 mph.

Maybe they ought to swap rides.

Brown, the reigning NHRA Top Fuel champion, stopped by his old pal's garage at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Wednesday, slipping into Carpenter's No. 20 Chevrolet and getting a quick lesson in paddle shifting on the car that will sit on the pole for the Indy 500.

The two drivers from far different disciplines have known each other for about 15 years, Carpenter said. So after he posted a four-lap average of 228.762 mph to lead the field for Sunday's race, Brown decided it was time to swing by on his day off for an afternoon chat.

''I always love coming out to the 500,'' said Brown, who grew up in New Jersey but lives in suburban Indianapolis. ''It's just good times to come out and especially support Ed, pulling that pole off. That's just a

Young drivers give IndyCar solid foundation

(Eds: With AP Photos.) By MICHAEL MAROT AP Sports writer Graham Rahal and Marco Andretti have all the ingredients the IndyCar Series has been craving. They have famous family names, have reached Victory Lane and seem to enjoy playing up their growing rivalry.

The bold, budding stars represent a whole new kind of IndyCar driver -- the guys and gals who could finally become this series' cornerstone fixtures for a generation to come.

''This is a pretty young group,'' Rahal said. ''There are a lot of young people here who you could see at this track for the next 20 years. I think that's a great thing and we hope that's the case.''

It's not the first time IndyCar has pinned its future hopes on a bunch of twentysomethings.

Those young fresh faces in the 1960s carried names such as Mario Andretti and A.J. Foyt and Al and Bobby Unser. They emerged as the foundation for IndyCar's glory days and when they left in the late '80s or early t mid '90s there wer

2013 Indianapolis 500: Why Ed Carpenter can win Indy 500

Hometown hero Ed Carpenter is on the pole for the 97th Running of the Indianapolis 500. That’s probably step one in his plans for the Month of May.
Obviously the bigger prize is winning his hometown race but he had to complete step one first and that’s qualifying.
The next step is going to be fast cars leading up to the big race.
So far, Carpenter has shown that.
Carpenter led opening day practice and showed he was quickest in shake down mode. He was obviously quick in qualifying trim. That’s 2-for-2. Now, he wants to be quickest and win in race trim and make it 3-for-3 at Indy for his first 500 victory.
Many will overlook him but I think he should be the favorite still.
Carpenter was 10th quickest in race trim during the first week with a speed of 224.019 mph. The problem is he didn’t get the tow the guys in front of him had so we don’t know yet how quick he really is compared to the rest.
That won’t matter as long as he’s up front though.
So lets make the case for Carpenter to win...

2013 Indianapolis 500: Frustrating month for Rahal/Letterman/Lanigan Racing group

There were several teams on top of the world on Pole Day.
Andretti Autosport put five cars in the top nine. Then there’s Team Penske who also put all three cars in the top nine. And how about Ed Carpenter winning the pole with his own team?
Then there were teams that had bad days.
None had it worse though than Rahal/Letterman/Lanigan Racing.
It took literally the second to last qualifier to put one of their three cars in the top 24 as James Jakes lived on the bubble all afternoon. He would be bumped out then put back in. Then he made another run to get back in only to get bumped back out.
He was the second to last qualifier with just three minutes to go in the session and bumped his way back in to qualify 20th at 225.809 mph.
Unfortunately, Jakes was the only RLL car to qualify as the other two will have to make the 97th Running of the Indianapolis 500 on Bump Day.
Graham Rahal was fourth quickest in the morning session and thought he had a decent car. That changed in the qualifying...

2013 Indianapolis 500: Katherine Legge to run No. 81 Schmidt Entry for 500

INDIANAPOLIS- It has been confirmed, Katherine Legge will attempt to qualify for this year’s 97th Running of the Indianapolis 500.
Legge will pilot the No. 81 Sam Schmidt/Peterson Motorsports entry that was originally entered last Saturday on opening day as the No. 99 entrant.
They changed the number to No. 81 as she will attempt to make her second career Indianapolis 500 start.
Last year, Legge finished 22nd here after the 500 being her first career oval race. What’s even more remarkable is her best races were all on ovals in 2012 as she had finishes of 22nd at Indy, 15th at Texas, 18th at Milwaukee, 15th at Iowa and a career best of ninth in the season finale at Fontana.
She’s made 10 career Izod IndyCar Series starts in her career with all coming in ’12.
She was originally supposed to be in the Dragon Racing No. 6 TrueCar Chevrolet for 2013 but was outed for Sebastian Saveedra before the season started. That left her without a ride for the season as she tried to work herself into...

Schmidt trying to get 2 cars in before adding car

Sam Schmidt is content to wait another day before hiring a third driver for the Indianapolis 500.

The owner of Schmidt Peterson Motorsports told The Associated Press on Friday he has not hired a driver for the No. 99 car but might if his two other drivers safely qualify Saturday. Schmidt's other drivers are Simon Pageland, last year's IndyCar rookie of the year, and rookie Tristan Gautier. Both are from France.

Schmidt says a handful of drivers, including Britain's Katherine Legge, are interested in driving. Schmidt does not yet have sponsorship for the car, either.

Indy qualifying will be held Saturday and Sunday, with 33 driver-car combinations trying to make the May 26 race.

Briscoe eager to be better on Indy 500 race day

(Eds: APNewsNow. With AP Photos.) By JIM JOHNSON Associated Press A year ago, Ryan Briscoe captured the Indianapolis 500 pole and wound up five on race day.

After not finding a fulltime ride this season, Briscoe is back for another 500 former employer Chip Ganassi. A good showing in Indy this year, he hopes, will lead to something more for the Australian.

Briscoe has more experience and knowledge after spending the last five years with Team Penske than he did in 2005 when he first raced for Ganassi. And now Ganassi, too, hopes there could be a future for Briscoe whether it's more races this season or a fulltime ride in the future.

2013 Indianapolis 500: Exclusive Interview with E.J. Viso

To really make your mark on history in the Izod IndyCar Series or racing in general, an Indianapolis 500 victory on a drivers resume will forever make him a champion and a legend.
Not just anyone can win at the famed 2.5-mile oval. It takes a great amount of skill as drivers are pulling 3-4 g-forces in each of the four corners 200 times on race day. Most people are picking drivers like Helio Castroneves, Dario Franchitti and Scott Dixon as favorites to win this year’s 97th Running of the 500.
I say watch out for E.J. Viso.
Viso is off to the best start of his career and coming to Indianapolis with a lot of momentum. The 28-year old is in his first season with Andretti Autosport and has finishes of seventh, 12th, 22nd and sixth to start the season off. He earned his first career front row start in the last race at Brazil and has shown flashes of brilliance.
His organization Andretti Autosport has won two of the four poles, three of the four races and has the defending series champion...

Andretti team continues to top Indy speed chart

(Eds: APNewsNow. Will be updated. With AP Photos.) By MICHAEL MAROT AP Sports Writer Andretti Autosport is off to a great start at Indianapolis.

After four days of practice, the five teammates driving for Michael Andretti have been among the fastest cars on Indy's 2.5-mile oval. And it doesn't seem to matter who's driving what. At one point Tuesday, James Hinchcliffe and Marco Andretti swapped cars and still posted good times. Even Colombian Carlos Munoz, who passed his rookie test Saturday, has been near the top.

Andretti's team came to Indy with defending series champ and St. Petersburg winner Ryan Hunter-Reay, and Hinchcliffe, who has won two of the other three races. Hinchcliffe, Marco Andretti and Hunter-Ready are all in the top six in points, too.

What's happened?

Andretti made some changes during the offseason, and it's paid big dividends.

Carpenter fastest during Indy practice

Ed Carpenter jumped to the top of the speed chart late Saturday afternoon and finished with the fastest lap of the day during the Indianapolis 500's first practice session.

Carpenter, the stepson of former Indianapolis Motor Speedway CEO Tony George, finished the 2.5-mile oval going 220.970 mph. Another American, Josef Newgarden, was second-fastest at 220.920 while rookie Carlos Munoz of Colombia was third at 220.720.

Five drivers topped the 220 mark in tough conditions. It was unseasonably chilly, breezy and mostly overcast, slowing speeds that could reach 230 mph when qualifying begins next weekend.

Practice is scheduled to resume Sunday.

Three newcomers, including Munoz, passed their rookie tests.
