Pistorius, Semenya lose funding

Oscar Pistorius and Caster Semenya were left off a list of athletes to be given funding ahead of the 2016 Rio Games because neither is currently training or competing, the South African Olympic Committee said Thursday.

Pistorius, a double-amputee runner who competed at the London Games, was not on the high performance list for the next Olympics and Paralympics after his decision to stay out of competition for the rest of the year to focus on defending himself against a murder charge for the shooting death of his girlfriend in February.

While Pistorius' absence on the list released Wednesday was expected, Semenya's was a major surprise after building a reputation as South Africa's top runner over the past four years.

She won the 800-meter world title in Berlin in 2009 and returned to competition following a yearlong absence because of a gender-test controversy to win silver medals at the 2011 worlds and the London Olympics.

Murofushi loses appeal at CAS in IOC election case

Former Olympic champion Koji Murofushi has lost his appeal against disqualification from an election to become an IOC member representing athletes.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport says it dismissed the Japanese hammer thrower's challenge of an IOC decision excluding him, after claims he excessively lobbied fellow athletes ahead of voting at the London Olympics.

Despite ruling against the 2004 Athens Games champion and bronze medalist in London, CAS said Murofushi's ''reputation and sportsmanship were intact.''

Murofushi was barred after apparently winning one of four vacant eight-year IOC membership mandates in a 21-candidate election.

The IOC also disqualified a second athlete, Taiwanese taekwondo fighter Chu Mu-yen, for breaking campaign rules. CAS dismissed Chu's appeal in March.

The IOC has delayed filling the athlete member seats during the nine-month appeal process.

UA's Barrett gets NCAA high jump record, Pac-12 title

LOS ANGELES The Arizona track and field teams claimed four individual titles on Saturday, with Brigetta Barrett earning headlines with a collegiate record in the high jump, and the women sit in first place after the opening day of competition.

The UA women lead the team competition with 60 points overall. Arizona State is in second with 45 points, UCLA is in third place with 33 points, Stanford is in fourth with 32 points and Oregon is fifth with 30.50 points.

On the mens side, UCLA leads with 53.50 points. Arizona, with 12 points, is tied for eighth place with USC.

Barrett, a senior, won the womens high jump competition with a mark of 6-6.25 (1.99m), a mark that represents an all-time collegiate record.

Amy Acuff (UCLA), Destinee Hooker (Texas) and Kajsa Bergqvist (SMU) held the previous record with jumps of 6-6 (1.98m). The win also gave Barrett her third straight conference title, making her the third woman in Pac-1012 history to win three conference titles in the high jump. Tanya Hughes of Arizona (1

17-year-old draws Usain Bolt comparisons

Watch out, Rio 2016, Yoshihide Kiryu is coming for you. The 17-year-old Japanese sprinter wowed the track and field world last week with his 10.01-second time in the 100-meter dash at the Mikio Oda Memorial in Hiroshima, Japan. That mark tied a junior world record shared by Darrel Brown of Trinidad & Tobago and Jeff Demps of the United States (and formerly of the New England Patriots). Kiryu has his sights on the Japanese record of 10.00 seconds at the Seiko Golden Grand Prix this weekend — he reportedly hopes to run a 9.96 — and looks forward to having the opportunity to face off against the world’s best before long. “Having come this far, I want to become the first [Japanese sprinter] to run under 10 seconds,” he told the Hurriyet Daily News. “If I tune up thoroughly, I can run 10.00. … I want to run alongside [Usain] Bolt [at the world championships] and see how he is different from me.” Check out Kiryu’s record run in the video below.
Pistorius had boxes of steroids in home?

The story of “Blade Runner” Oscar Pistorius captured public attention because of its stark contrast to many sports stories of the day. While baseball and cycling struggled with their performance-enhancing drug problem — and basketball and football seemingly ignored theirs — here was an athlete who struggled against his body to accomplish incredible feats. Well, so much for that narrative. According to the reports of two UK tabloids, The Sun and The Mirror, upon his arrest for allegedly shooting his girlfriend, South African model Reeva Steenkamp, “boxes and boxes” of steroids were discovered in a drawer in Pistorius’ home by police. Pistorius says that he was holding the PEDs for a friend, says The Mirror’s article. Moreover, police may be investigating whether or not the drugs played a role in a potential crime. According to The Sun’s report, police are following up on a theory that Pistorius may have shot Steenkamp in a fit of roid rage.

Lolo Jones apologizes for unfortunate Twitter exchange with Eric LeGrand

Lolo Jones came under scrutiny on Tuesday after responding to a Twitter challenge from paralyzed former football player Eric LeGrand with a few taunts.LeGrand, who frequently tweets at other athletes, asked Jones if she wanted to race. Jones sent back a few taunting tweets before learning that LeGrand has been in a wheelchair since suffering a spinal cord injury in a 2010 Rutgers-Army game. The Olympic hurdler began defending herself for the mishap and seemed to regret the gaffe, but she didn’t officially apologize until hours later.“I’m truly sorry if I offended anyone by my tweet,” Jones told Yahoo! Sports’ Kristian Dryer. “When Eric challenged me to a race earlier all I knew was that he was a football player, but certainly had no idea he had become paralyzed from a football injury. I thought I was tweeting in good fun like I always do with the many athletes who challenge me to races.”LeGrand declined comment to Yahoo!, but he did express support for Jones over Twitter and apol...

Lolo Jones Taunts Wheelchair-Bound Eric LeGrand When Challenged to Race Without Knowing Who He Is

Lolo Jones is known for being outspoken on her Twitter account, and has made news there before for showing off a boisterous personality. On Tuesday, however, the Olympic hurdler went too far with some taunting comments that she made in response to a playful challenge by former Rutgers football player Eric LeGrand. LeGrand, who is confined to a wheelchair after breaking his neck playing at Rutgers, challenged Jones to a race via tweet. Jones, taking LeGrand's challenge at face value, responded aggressively. "Get checked for a concussion," she responded. "Clearly, [you've] been hit in the head." The touchy part, of...

Usain Bolt was his usual jubilant, cocky, playful self after winning the 200 meters in London on Thursday. Until Carl Lewis' name was mentioned. Bolt was asked about the great sprinters in history, including Jesse Owens and Lewis. After praising Owens, Bolt made it perfectly clear that he was going to say something controversial, and he followed through. "Carl Lewis, I have no respect for him," Bolt said. "The things he says about the track athletes are very downgrading. I think he's just looking for attention because nobody really talks about him. "That was really sad for me when I...
