Montreal Alouettes win Grey Cup

CALGARY, Alberta — Damon Duval kicked a 33-yard field goal with no time left — after getting a second chance because of a Saskatchewan penalty — in the Grey Cup to give the Montreal Alouettes a 28-27 victory over the Roughriders on Sunday night.

Duval missed moments earlier from 43 yards, but the Roughriders were penalized for having 13 men on the field.

Montreal overcame a late 16-point deficit.

Avon Cobourne, selected the game MVP, scored on a 3-yard run with 7:05 left,...

Mueller, Hunt called up for Germany

Thomas Mueller of Bayern Munich and Aaron Hunt of Werder Bremen were called up Friday for Germany's friendlies next week against Chile and Ivory Coast.

The two midfielders have not previously played for the national team. Mueller will be in the squad only for Wednesday's match against Ivory Coast because he is also in the under-21 team set to play Northern Ireland next Friday, coach Joachim Loew said.

Hunt, Frings, and Hoffenheim

Aaron Hunt has been garnering international attention lately amidst rumors that England U21 coach Stuart Pearce has been keeping an eye on him and reporting his progress to Fabio Capello. Raf Honigstein at the Guardian even devoted his weekly Bundesliga write-up to the debate. There is of course mention of Hunt's former (some alleged) bad habits and injuries, but if ...

Jack Kemp Dies at 73

Jack Kemp, the ex-quarterback, congressman, one-time vice-presidential nominee and self-described "bleeding-heart conservative" died Saturday.

His spokeswoman Bona Park and longtime friend and former campaign adviser Edwin J. Feulner confirmed that Kemp ((pictured, thanks Buffalo News file)) died after a lengthy illness.

Kemp had announced in January 2009 that he had been diagnosed with cancer. He said he was undergoing tests but gave no other detail.

Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell called Kemp "one of the nation's most distinguished public servants, Jack was a powerful voice in American politics for more than four decades."

Kemp, a former quarterback for the Buffalo Bills, represented western New York for nine terms in Congress, leaving the House for an unsuccessful presidential bid in 1988.

Eight years later, after serving a term as President George H.W. Bush's housing secretary, he made it onto the national ticket as Bob Dole's running-mate.

With that loss, the Republican bowed out of political office, but not out of politics. In speaking engagements and a syndicated column, he continued to advocate for the tax reform and supply-side policies -- the idea that the more taxes are cut the more the economy will grow -- that he pioneered.

Kemp's rapid and wordy style made the enthusiastic speaker with the neatly side-parted white hair a favorite on the lecture circuit, and a millionaire. (His style didn't win over everyone. In his memoirs, former Vice President Dan Quayle wrote that at Cabinet meetings, Bush would be irked by Kemp's habit of going off on tangents and not making "any discernible point.")

Kemp also signed on with numerous educational and corporate boards and charitable organizations, including NFL Charities, which kept him connected to his football roots.

Kemp was a 17th round 1957 NFL draft pick by the Detroit Lions but was cut before the season began. After being released by three more NFL teams and the Canadian Football League over the next three years, he joined the American Football League's Los Angeles Chargers as a free agent in 1960. A waivers foul-up two years later would land him with the Buffalo Bills, who got him at the bargain basement price of $100.

Mr. Kemp, bills fans will forever remember you for helping bring titles to the city in the AFL. But those of us at OSG HQ thank for your service for your country...

NEW YORK, NY—Shortly after being notified that he had been drafted by the Detroit Lions, Georgia quarterback Matthew Stafford packed what belongings he could carry and fled north to Canada, where he plans to join up with a CFL team in the hopes of avoiding his commitment to the Lions.

Tuesday Morning Headlines

The general consensus around the web is that the Packers, Eagles, 49ers, Giants and Bengals had great drafts. On the flip side of the coin, the Raiders are being reviewed as not so good.

Rivals.com has posted their 2009 All-Undrafted team, highlighted by Texas Tech QB Graham Harrell (tryout with Browns), Tennesse RB Arian Foster (signed by Houston) and Wisconsin RB P.J. Hill (signed by New Orleans).

Scott Wright of NFL Draft Countdown has posted his top 50 undrafted free agents of 2009.

Carolina has signed Canadian star RB Jamall Lee of Bishop's College in Quebec. Lee weighs 225 pounds and ran in the low 4.3s at the CFL Combine.

After drafting QB Pat White, Miami has released 2007 second round draft pick, QB John Beck.

After spending the last four seasons in Carolina, CB Ken Lucas has re-signed with the Seattle Seahawks. The Seahawks also added former Raider FB Justin Griffith.

Philadelphia Eagles CB Sheldon Brown says he'll report to camp but still wants to be traded. The Eagles traded two fifth round picks to the Patriots for CB Ellis Hobbs on draft weekend.

Building the 1970 Dallas Cowboys

Even though the Cowboys had a rookie-of-the-year running back named Calvin Hill returning in 1970, Dallas went for another back in the first round of the 1970 draft. The pick was an enigmatic soul named Duane Thomas.

The Cowboys have had their share of characters during the team's history, but nobody matches Thomas in terms of bizarre behavior. Nevertheless, Thomas was instrumental in the Cowboys finally climbing the NFL mountain, so his selection was important.

Besides Thomas, the Cowboys picked up long-time starters in Charlie Waters, John Fitzgerald, Mark Washington, and Pat Toomay.

The most interesting pick was perhaps Zenon Andrusyshyn. After the Cowboys drafted him, he spent eight seasons in the Canadian Football League before joining the Kansas City Chiefs in 1978. He returned to the CFL in 1979, then played in the USFL for three seasons. He finished his career after playing in Montreal in 1986. He has his own Wikipedia entry.

Margene Adkins was another CFL player, only he played in Canada prior to the Cowboys selecting him.

Grade the 1970 Cowboys Draft

My Vote: A-

This was a solid draft. The Cowboys missed out on Mel Blount (3rd round, Pittsburgh) and Jake Scott (7th round, Miami), but Dallas had more hits in the 1970 draft than in several of the previous drafts of the 1960s.

A Big Acquisition

One of the biggest acquisitions of the 1970 offseason was not through the draft. The Cowboys traded center Malcom Walker and DE Clarence Williams for future Hall of Famer Herb Adderley, who improved the Dallas secondary immediately.

Blue Jays Fans Just Wouldn't Stop Until They Finally Took Away The Booze

So it has finally happened. Yep, the booze wasn't flowing during yesterday's Tigers-Blue Jays game and it won't be for three additional dates because according to the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario, folks in Toronto can't hold their liquor. The panel cited five broken rules at baseball and football games and concerts dating to the Canadian Football League championship game in 2007. The stadium will also be dry on April 21 when Toronto plays Texas, and for a CFL game o...

Abilene Welcomes Quincy Carter ((????))

Greg Jaklewicz of the Abilene Reporter-News has tracked down Quincy Carter...
Abilene, Texas and the Intense Football League

Abilene Ruff Riders coach Gerald Dockery said he hopes the only thing that keeps his new quarterback, Quincy Carter, down this season is a cold.

Carter was a no-show to his tent party Friday outside a local bank, missing the Intense Football League team's announcement that it had signed the former Dallas Cowboys quarterback. The spotlight fell on former Hardin-Simmons receiver Mychal Carrillo, who has signed with the team in hopes of making the final 25-player roster.

You can bet that list will include Carter, which gives the team a marquee player.

"You see Quincy on TV and you see Quincy up close and there's no comparison," coach Gerald Dockery said. "He can throw the ball with amazing accuracy and has a strong NFL arm. With the right season, he has the opportunity to be right back up there."
That could happen during the Ruff Riders' inaugural season, which begins April 6 at home against Odessa.

"At this level, we expect that to happen. That's what we want and we encourage it," Ruff Riders general manager Barney Welch said. "This league allows player to move up. We don't want to encourage lateral moves. But we want them to know that if they play for the Abilene Ruff Riders, maybe they can be the next guy who plays for the Dallas Cowboys."
Carter's been there. He was named starting quarterback for the Cowboys after the retirement of Troy Aikman and played three seasons in Dallas before going to the New York Jets. He also has played one season in the Canadian Football League, Bossier-Shreveport in AF2, another arena league and started the final three games last summer for the Arena Football League's Kansas City Brigade.

Besides his equipment and workout clothes -- Carter already has been in town to work with rookies such as Carrillo at the team's minicamp, Carter also brought personal baggage to Abilene.

On Feb. 27, he was arrested in the Rio Grande Valley for DWI. In the past, he also was in drug rehabilitation.

"We've had conversations about that the past couple of weeks," Welch said. "He told us, 'Yes, I want to be here.' His focus is being a leader of this team. Everyone deserves a second chance. He is grateful and he wants to prove he can move forward."

What got the team and Carter over the hump in negotiations?

"His commitment," Welch said. "He wants to show fans that he is a better person and a better player. So far, he has shown us that."

As for pay, Carter will get the league standard of $200 per game, plus $50 bonus given players on the winning team.

Like other players, he'll also have a weekday job. Welch said businesses have stepped forward with day jobs for players, who then will practice after work and play games on weekends.

Carter will have a job with the Ruff Riders front office, "selling tickets and sponsorships," Welch said. "He's got a history with other teams of doing that and we think he can build relationships in the community."

As for the team's other quarterbacks, Damone Scott and Orrick Watkins, Dockery said they still will be competitive in their workouts.

"If you had Jerry Rice and T.O. in camp, that wouldn't affect Carrillo," Dockery said. "They're not going to let that discourage them. Someone has to be ready to step in, an inexperienced quarterback who understands the game."

Carrillo already has been on the receiving end of Carter passes.

"You hear a lot about guys getting into the league and their work ethic, not working as hard. (Quincy) demands respect in the huddle but he's a down-to-earth guy," said Carrillo, who played at HSU from 2005-2008 after graduating from Sweetwater High. "The quarterback-receiver relationships is a key to a team's success."
Carrillo said Carter anticipates where and when a receiver will be open.

"You'd better get your head around and your hands up or he'll hit you (with the football) in the chest," Carrillo said. "He can put it on the spot or hit you in stride."
Dockery said Carter's arena football experience is limited "but he's picking it up. He knows how to make throws. It's not hard to pick up the concept."

Will Carter be given a chance to run the football?

"We want to use his arm, definitely, but we also want to use his feet," Dockery said. "He said he's 31 years old but has the legs of a 25-year-old. I'll see about that.

"He has been working out at the gym. He said he needed to lose a few pounds but he's ready. I told him what I wanted from him is to dominate, whatever the level."

Carter passed for 6,337 yards in four NFL seasons and rushed for 518 yards. He threw for 32 touchdowns with 37 interceptions.

For Kansas City last year, Carter was 51-of-89 for 575 yards and eight TDs. He had four interceptions.

Don't Believe The Hype...

More like Pick of the Litter Box. The Cleveland Browns should have seen the signs... Tim Couch would actually end up on the couch a few years (althought he did marry her) after throwing a gaggle of interceptions, and "Akili" is Swahili for "one who floats passes and can't understand playbooks." Both Sports Illustrated and the Browns missed on the best QB that year--Donovan McNabb--who became the face of the Eagles' franchise in the new millenium.

There is no clear-cut way to determine who should go where and when. That same year, I thought this guy was going to be the next Joe Montana. Last year, I thought this was a terrible pick because he played against some inferior competition and he happened to have a cousin how excelled in the NFL at the same position.

My biggest problem with the NFL Draft is not blowhards like Mel Kiper or the awful suits players wear to the draft itself...but the damn teams that say that they have plugged all their holes and dissimated their needs with their draft selections. Often, these teams draft these hyped-up players and feel that they can step in and change the team right away. Often, that doesn't happen.

Here are some "overhyped" players that will be drafted too high, and may end up marrying Playboy Playmates of the Year and playing more professional football than I or you will ever play in our whole lives playing in the CFL before you know it:

1. James Laurinitis, LB, OSU.

2. Macho Harris, CB, VT

3. Ricky Jean-Francois, DT. LSU

4. Pat White, ATH, WVU

5. Javon Ringer, RB, MSU

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

I'm always bad with picking sleepers, but this is one I have a good feeling for (n/h). He stuck out at the Senior Bowl and could go anywhere from 2-5th rounds.

Ramses Barden, WR, Cal Poly

From NFL Draft Dog:

6' 6" 228 lbs
Senior
Strengths: Size, strength, hands, athletic ability, jumping ability
Weakness: Speed, level of competition,
route running
NFL Comparison: Marques Colston, New Orleans Saints

Ten Reasons Kurt "The Bagger" Warner Will Win Sunday! (VIDEO)

10 Reason Why Kurt Warner Will Lead the Cardinals to Victory on Sunday

				10. Kurt Warner is a bible thumping, former grocery store clerk, who is married to a cougar
that looks like an older and butcher version of Celine Dion, so we know that he won't be
out prowling for hookers on the night before the big game. This means that instead he'll
be in his hotel room going over the Pittsburgh blitz packages and praying, both of which
are bad news for the Steelers.

Princeton Sports Symposium

On December 4, just days before my Fall 2L finals begin, I will be traveling to Princeton, New Jersey with my roommate, who also happens to be Treasurer of the Entertainment and Sports Law Society at the University of Florida. Speaking of which, check out what we have put up thus far for our big symposium coming up in January 2009. I suggest you make it to UF for the event! Anyway, back to the event under discussion. I post various symposium information on this site throughout the year, but rarely attend any of them. While they are all fantastic events with great speakers, my schedule and finances prevent me from making a presence at all of them. That being said, I could not miss an opportunity to go to Princeton's symposium this year. Check out the information below. If you will be in attendance, reach out to me beforehand and make sure to say hi in Jersey.

Anthony Guli to CFL

Former Florida International Univ. Fullback Anthony Guli, is working his butt off make it to the CFL this upcoming Spring. At his pro-day last Febuary he performed outstanding (running a 4.76) However, due to a season ending injury leading to shoulder surgery he fell off the NFL scouts radar. He will have to put in his time before he gets to the NFL. It may be CFL or AFL. I know he had a few workouts with NFL teams including Chicago, Miami and Oakland.
Its only a matter of time before scouts will see what he can do. Here is a picture of him training in Davie, FL. His aggressive running style and great speed will land him a roster spot for any NFL team.

It's NBA Draft Week

Three out of the big four American professional sports have gone through the process of selecting a new class of rookies for the start of their respective next seasons. The only sport left is basketball, which will conduct its yearly draft on Thursday, June 26th. The television coverage should be a little more exciting than whatever what broadcast for four grueling hours during the MLB Amateur Draft. For one, the commentators tend to be more bearable. Other reasons that the NBA Draft tends to gauge more of an interest among fans is that with only two rounds of selections, fans have become accustomed to the names of many of the young men who will be selected. It also helps that many of the selections will be thrown right into the mix of the teams that select them, while in the MLB, a majority of the players chosen never even make it to the big stage. Here is the quick when and where so that you do not miss your team's picks:

    * When: June 26th: 7 p.m. EST on ESPN.
    * Where: Madison Square Garden, New York

Want some helpful links to guide you up to draft day? See below:

   1. Find out exactly where your team is slotted to pick in each of the two rounds and get Austin Walton's take on who they will pick (with no commentary): NBA Mock Draft
   2. Get familiar with the names of NCAA freshmen, sophomores, and juniors who have kept their name in the draft along with the international studs who may be looking to turn red, white, and blue: Early-Entry Withdrawal Deadline: Final List
   3. Take a trip down memory lane and re-live the first round of the NBA Draft all the way back to 1957: Complete First Round Results

My main focus on the draft will be following the success of the WMG team which includes agents Arn Tellem and B.J. Armstrong. I interviewed B.J. a little less than a month ago (click here), and may be following up with him again for another special feature on this blog. Yeah, Arn is the man?he apparently had much to do with WMG's signing of Rose. B.J. is also showing that he is fit for the job. One guy getting left out of the discussion so far is Lee Melchionni. We covered his signing with WMG last October, when he was shacking at the Tellem household. Melchionni does not serve as a primary agent for any of WMG's clients, but he is getting some hands-on experience. His tasks include having a client's dogs shipped to him on a plane and ordering a player 82 custom suits, so that said player would never have to wear the same suit to a game twice.

WMG hopes to hear these clients' names called on Thursday: Derrick Rose, Brook Lopez, Robin Lopez, Russell Westbrook, Anthony Randolph, Marty Leunen, Danilo Gallinari, D.J. Augustin, Jason Rich, Davon Jefferson. That list is unprecidented. I cannot personally remember any agency have the potential to dominate a draft in any sport quite like WMG has positioned itself. Actually, Darren Gill has done a decent job putting his name in the mix when it comes to the CFL Draft.

Dynasty does not have any players in the 2008 NBA Draft, but we are in discussions with a few players that have put in some time in lower professional leagues like the NBDL and IBL. We hope to make a splash in 2009's draft, but for now, we are content with getting our feet wet representing players who are right on the cusp of joining an NBA team. Look for an update on this front very shortly.

Also, I will be the subject of a couple of interviews this week. Make sure to check out the podcast on HoopsAddict.com that should be posted early in the week along with my live appearance on the Region Buzz Sports Show. If you are in the Chicago area, you can listen to it live by tuning in to 1230 AM on your radio from 6:00-7:00 p.m. CST on Thursday. If not, it will be posted here for download.

Gill Sports Management Dominates CFL Draft?AGAIN

I am a huge fan of Darren Gill. Unless you have been reading this blog for a while now or are reading this site from your comfortable home/office in Canada, you have no clue who I am talking about. Gill doesn't mind.

I first talked to Darren when he offered to be a guest contributor at SportsAgentBlog.com for an entire week. For a list of his posts, click here. Besides his brief stint at writing for this site, Mr. Gill focuses primarily on the CFL (Canadian Football League) and has had a lot of recent success in the CFL Drafts. Last year, Gill Sports Management represented 12 players (over 25% of 2007 drafted players), and the #1 (Chris Bauman) and #2 (Warren Kean) overall selections. Last year was no fluke, Darren brought his game to the CFL draft once again.

The Canadian Football League held their annual Canadian College Draft on April 30th and for the 2nd year in a row it was Montreal based agency Gill Sports Management (GSM) that turned out to be the big winner, representing a total of 16 players (over 33% of all drafted players), which included 3 1st round selections including; Dylan Barker (1st overall), Shea Emry (7th overall), and Samuel Giguere (8th overall).

This marks the first time since that an agency represents back-to-back 1st overall selections. Last year GSM represented 4 first round picks, including the 1st overall selection Chris Bauman, for a total of 18 drafted players.

Sherbrooke receiver Samuel Giguere made news earlier in the week when he signed a Priority Free Agent contract with the Indianapolis Colts.

In total, GSM had 3 clients selected in the first, 2 in the second, 5 in the third, 1 in the fourth, 3 in the fifth, and 2 in the sixth.

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats made CFL history during Wednesday's draft with their selection of Dylan Barker. This was the first time a defensive back had been selected with the 1st pick since the Edmonton Eskimos selected Patrick Burke in 1993. Also of note was the fact that Barker's selection marks back-to-back 1st overall selections that played in the CIS, both in the province of Saskatchewan as well.

Another GSM client was featured during the draft as former Boston College standout Kevin Challenger was involved in a trade which sent him from Calgary to Edmonton in return for the 2nd overall draft pick.

Gill Sports Management, founded and headed by Montreal-native Darren Gill, currently represents over 50 active CFLers and has been representing players since 2002.

The Gill Sports Management Scorecard

1 (1) Hamilton Dylan Barker - DB - Saskatchewan
1 (7) Montr?al Shea Emry - LB - UBC

Another NFL bust to play for the Toronto Argonauts

In case you were wondering what David Boston is doing with his life, apparently he is still playing football. The abnormally muscular wide receiver has signed with the CFL's Toronto Argonauts. The Argos have a strange infatuation with signing former NFL players that have fallen from grace for one reason or another.

Dallas Cowboys Salary Cap Review

There is a lot of wonder and concern about what the Dallas Cowboys will do this off season to address the problem areas. We need a couple of corners and possibly a safety. We need a new wide receiver. And I think we're going to need a running back. Do we draft these positions or hit the free agent market?

We have unrestricted free agents Flozell Adams, Ken Hamlin and Keith Davis who most Cowboys fans want back. I have problems with Adams and his constant false starts. Dallas has 40 pla...
