Colorado wildfire backdrop for H.S. game

They say a picture tells 1000 words, this one says “sorry Mother Nature, the game must go on”. Fox 31 Denver posted the below photo (along with several others worth seeing) showing kids playing baseball as they normally would with a huge gray cloud over center field. Smoke billows beyond center field in ColoradoCredit: @PeterMcEvoy2 The photo was originally tweeted by Peter McEvoy, credited to being at Pine Creek High School just on the fringe of the evacuation area. It is already the most destructive fire in Colorado history, thankfully to date, no injuries or fatalities have been reported. - David Whitlock (@lhd_on_sports) Follow us on Twitter @rbts_baseball The post PHOTO: High School baseball game continues in the shadow of Colorado fire smoke appeared first on Reading Between The Seams.

54-yard free kick goal scored as OT expires

As Rick Chandler of SportsGrid so deftly pointed out, this happened during the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association Division II-AA Boys Soccer Championship game between Father Ryan High School and Montgomery Bell Academy. With the game knotted up at one, and Father Ryan’s Luke Strebel lining up for a 54-yard free kick as overtime was about to expire, it looked as if the game would go to dreaded penalty kicks to determine a winner. Then this happened… Talk about your all-time improbable finishes. Watching Montgomery Bell players go from expecting penalty kicks to the agony of defeat in the blink of an eye is heartbreaking, but honestly, you have to defend better than that in a championship game, even on what seems to be a meaningless, long range free kick. Too bad they had to learn that the hard way.
Phenomenal catch ends H.S. baseball game

YouTube Everything is bigger in Texas, or so they say. Well, one thing that is bigger is the high school baseball postseason tournament earlier this week. In the University Interscholastic League high school playoffs, Diboll High (TX) and Caldwell (TX) were tied one game to one in a best-of-three series. Caldwell was down to their final strike in the final inning of the third and deciding game. The score was 7-6. The tying run was on second base. The winning run stood on first. The game could not have been anymore dramatic. And then this happened. The Caldwell hitter smacked a long fly ball over the center fielder’s head. And that’s when the Diboll center fielder went into hero mode. He turned his right shoulder and sprinted backward after the ball and seemed to have a beat on it. But he misjudged it a little, squared back up toward the infield and caught it falling backwards onto the warning track. The description doesn’t do it justice. Just watch it.

Texas high school senior lifts 700 pounds

If Matt Poursoltani keeps lifting at this rate, he may be able to find a part-time job hoisting cars or other heavy objects off people sometime soon. Poursoltani lifted a ridiculous 700 pounds on Saturday — a feat not only impressive because it’s 700 pounds but also because Poursoltani is a high school senior at Pilot Point High in Texas, and because he has increased the amount he can lift by more than 100 pounds in just a year, according to the Dallas Morning News. Poursoltani weighs 270 pounds, making his lifting astounding compared to the NFL bench press record of 705 by 325-pound Larry Allen. The all-time bench press record is 1,075 pounds, by Ryan Kennelly in 2008, but Poursoltani appears to be on track to rival that if he keeps working at it. Check out Poursoltani’s ridiculous lift in the video below. Photo of the Day Oh, everybody at Florida Gulf Coast University is having a great time.
High school announcer predicts defensive TD

R.J. Lewis is a high school football analyst in Atlanta. Last weekend he announced a game between Douglass and Rockmart and made a bold prediction with Douglass on defense and trailing 54-0. He predicted Douglass would score a defensive touchdown. "The Douglass Astros will get on the board defensively... you gotta step out on that limb. A bobbled snap, scoop it in for the score, it could happen." Lo and behold, that's exactly what happened, as on the very next play Douglass recovered a fumble, returning it for their only touchdown of the game. Now, we've seen our share of called announcing shots before, but none in favor of a team trailing by 54 points in the third quarter. That's impressive. Finally, after all these years, Slyvia Browne may have some competition.
High school runner Meghan Vogel helps carry injured opponent across finish line (Video)

There was some outstanding sportsmanship displayed during at the Ohio state track meet last Saturday.
Meghan Vogel, a junior at West Liberty-Salem (Ohio) High School, won the state’s Division III 1,600 meter race, but she gained more attention for a race in which she finished last.
Vogel was running the 3,200 meter race and about 50 meters from the finish line when she saw Arden McMath, a sophomore from Arlington High School, collapse. Instead of passing her, Vogel stopped to carry McMath across the finish line.
Race rules say Vogel should have been automatically disqualified for helping another runner, but the Springfield News-Sun says meet management took no action. They gave McMath 14th place and a finishing time of 12:29.90, and Vogel 15th in 12:30.24. Vogel made sure McMath crossed the finish line first because she had been ahead of her.
“Helping her across the finish line was a lot more satisfying than winning the state championship,” Vogel told the News-Sun.

Pitcher strikes out five in one inning

A pitcher can strike out no more than three batters in an inning, right? Wrong. Eric Veglahn, a senior at La Crescent Senior High School in La Crescent, Minn., did something no major league pitcher has ever mastered. Not only did he strike out the side, but according to the Minnesota Baseball Hub, Veglahn struck out two more batters in that same inning -- a five-strikeout frame. It may seem unbelievable and impossible, but it's not. The first two batters of the inning went down looking, and the third struck out swinging. But the catcher dropped the third strike and...
