Lysacek expects to compete in Sochi

The optimism and confidence oozing out of Evan Lysacek are worthy of an Olympic champion.

He hopes to make that a two-time gold medalist next year at the Sochi Games.

Even though Lysacek hasn't competed since winning at the Vancouver Olympics in 2010, he believes - make that expects - to be representing the United States in 10 months.

''I don't want to come back the same,'' Lysacek said Monday. ''I want to come back stronger.''

It has been a long and sometimes difficult three years since his triumphant performance in Vancouver, where Lysacek outskated defending Olympic champion Evgeny Plushenko and everyone else. After a break from the sport so he could enjoy the spoils of victory, including a well-received appearance on ''Dancing With The Stars,'' Lysacek has aborted each attempt to get back to competitive skating. The biggest challenge has been simply staying healthy.

The 27-year-old Lysacek's latest setback came in the just-concluded season,

Figure Skating in Harlem celebrates its 16th anniversary Monday with a gala featuring Olympic champions Scott Hamilton and Evan Lysacek.

Figure Skating in Harlem is the only organization in the country that combines the power of education with the grace and discipline of figure skating. It offers academic and fitness programs to girls in the area.

Evan Lysacek healthy, eyeing 2 medals in Sochi

Another three weeks, and Evan Lysacek might have been a competitor at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships instead of a spectator.

The reigning Olympic champion said Sunday he's fully recovered from November surgery to repair a torn abdominal muscle and is already able to do some of his triple jumps.

''I'm glad to be here - with mixed emotions, of course,'' Lysacek said. ''I wish so badly I was on the ice. I miss this. This is what I love about skating: competitive skating and the competitive atmosphere.''

No man has repeated as Olympic champion since 1952, and most don't even bother trying. But Lysacek is determined to go to next year's Sochi Olympics, when the new team competition will offer the chance for two medals.

He planned on returning to competition this season after a two-year break that included a runner-up finish on ''Dancing with the Stars.'' Lysacek had programs done, and his quadruple toe loop had gotten so consistent he plann

Olympic champ Lysacek out of nationals

Olympic champion Evan Lysacek's comeback is delayed again.

Lysacek has withdrawn from the upcoming U.S. Figure Skating Championships because of a slow recovery from surgery on a sports hernia. The national federation made the announcement Friday; the event begins Jan. 25.

The 27-year-old Lysacek had the surgery in November. He has been training with coaches Frank Carroll and Karen Kwan-Oppegard, but is not ready to resume competition.

He has not competed since the Vancouver Games in 2010.

Lysacek still hopes to be ready for the 2013-14 season and to skate at the Sochi Olympics.

''It's disappointing because health-wise I'm fine,'' Lysacek said. ''Due to the long layoff from the surgery I still need about three more weeks to get back into competition form. The good news is I am finally healthy, back to a full training schedule and already working hard to be ready for next season to defend my Olympic title at the 2014 Olympics in Sochi.''

Lysacek also is the 2009

Groin injury forces Lysacek out of Skate America

Evan Lysacek's competitive comeback is on hold after the Olympic figure skating champion dropped out of Skate America because of a groin injury.

U.S. Figure Skating announced the withdrawal Wednesday. Lysacek will be replaced by Armin Mahbanoozadeh, who was fourth at last year's U.S. Figure Skating Championships.

Skate America was to be Lysacek's first competition since he won gold at the Vancouver Games, the first U.S. man to win the Olympic title since Brian Boitano in 1988. Lysacek is not currently assigned to any other Grand Prixs, meaning his competitive debut may not come until the U.S. Figure Skating Championships in January.

In training the last year, Lysacek made his comeback official in August. He is aiming for a spot on the U.S. team at the 2014 Sochi Olympics.

Johnny Weir returns to competition

Former U.S. figure skating champion Johnny Weir returns to competition this weekend at the Finlandia Trophy.

Weir, a three-time winner at nationals (2004-06), has not competed since finishing sixth in the 2010 Olympics at Vancouver. He also was fifth at the 2006 Games at Turin, Italy.

Weir has said he is coming back because he wants to skate in the Sochi Olympics in two years. He plans to skate in two Grand Prix series events this season.

Also competing in the Finlandia Trophy are 2011 U.S. silver medalist Richard Dornbush, and in the women's event, 2010 U.S. Olympian Mirai Nagasu.

Michelle Kwan gets engaged to Clay Pell

Former figure skater Michelle Kwan announced that she is engaged to marry Clay Pell, a member of the White House's national security staff.

"It was a simple decision and it made sense," Kwan, 32, told People magazine.

Wow, that sounds so romantic.

Kwan, 32, won nine U.S. figure-skating championships, five world championships and two Olympic medals before retiring in 2005.

Pell, 30, proposed on Sept. 3 on Block Island off the coast of Rhode Island. The couple first met in April 2011.

"I was nervous about wanting to do it right, but I wasn't nervous about what the answer would be," Pell said. "We had been talking for a while about how we would like to have a family and the idea of getting married and what we wanted to do with our lives -- and public service. So I think we both knew where we were relationship-wise and where we were going."

Pell is the grandson of former Rhode Island senator Clairborne Pell, who started Pell Grants for college.

Sasha Cohen Now Wearing Bikini In Greece

And here I thought you guys wouldn’t even care about Olympic silver medalist Sasha Cohen in a bikini. It was just a couple weeks ago on a slow day when we decided to throw up a gallery of Cohen’s 2012 bikini work. Next thing we knew, you guys were slamming BC with pageviews. So, that said, let’s go to Greece where Sasha is vacationing and taunting some boat captain with her ass.
Yes, that’s the same bikini she was photographed wearing in California earlier this summer. She’s just a poor college student. Relax.

Olympic champ Lysacek makes return official

Olympic champion Evan Lysacek is returning to competitive figure skating.

Lysacek announced Friday that he is entered at Skate America, his first competition since winning the gold medal at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. He says he wants to defend his title at the 2014 Sochi Games - something no man has done since Dick Button in 1952.

Lysacek has always left the door open for a comeback, and he was assigned to two Grand Prix competitions last year. But negotiations with U.S. Figure Skating hit a snag, and he wound up not competing.

Lysacek's return is sure to be a boost for the Americans, who are down to just two spots at the world championships after having three from 2005 to 2011. No American has finished higher than fifth the past three years.

Kerrigan wants to go back to prison

Former Olympic figure skater Nancy Kerrigan's brother, convicted of assault and battery in connection with the 2010 death of their father, wants to go back to jail to serve the rest of his sentence.

Mark Kerrigan on July 27 was released early from a county jail, where he was serving 2 1/2 years following his May 2011 conviction.

He has a hearing scheduled Wednesday in Middlesex Superior Court, Probation Service spokeswoman Coria Holland said. He isn't accused of violating probation but has asked to return to jail to serve the remaining six months of his sentence, she said.

Kerrigan's probation conditions included alcohol counseling, anger management classes and mental health counseling. It will be up to the judge whether to send Kerrigan back to jail or make him continue on probation with those conditions, Holland said.

Kerrigan ''communicated his wish to complete his remaining six-month prison sentence,'' she said.

Figure skater Weir weds on New Year's Eve

US men's figure skater Johnny Weir married his boyfriend Victor Voronov on New Year's Eve in New York.

"I'm married!" Weir tweeted to fans about getting the "official stuff" over with. The pair plan to have a formal wedding over the summer.

The couple left New York Monday for their honeymoon in Punta Cana, in the Dominican Republic.

Weir, 27, and his new spouse, 28, have known each other for a while and reconnected over the summer.

Voronov, a lawyer who graduated from Georgetown Law School, changed his name on his Twitter profile to Victor Weir-Voronov.

Weir, a two-time Olympian, recently opened up about his sexuality and confirmed he was gay in January 2011.

In his 2011 memoir, "Welcome to My World," Weir openly identified himself as gay after previously dodging the issue. Back in 2006, he told fans on his website, "I don't feel the need to express my sexual being."

Michelle Kwan makes Figure Skating Hall of Fame

Michelle Kwan has been elected to the U.S. Figure Skating Hall of Fame.

The most decorated figure skater in American history, Kwan won 43 championships, including five world titles and nine U.S. crowns, with eight in a row. She also won the silver medal at the 1998 Winter Olympics and bronze at the 2002 Games.

She also earned 57 perfect 6.0 marks in major events under the old scoring system, the most of any skater.

Kwan will be inducted into the hall during the national championships in San Jose, Calif., at the end of January.

Evan Lysacek drops out of Grand Prix series

Olympic champion Evan Lysacek has dropped out of the Grand Prix Series, including the Skate America event which would have been his first competition since winning at the 2010 Vancouver Games.

Lysacek told U.S. Figure Skating on Friday that he won't compete in the Grand Prix, including next week's Skate America in Ontario, Calif., and the Trophee Eric Bompard event in November in Paris.

Lysacek gave no reason for his withdrawal. U.S. Figure Skating executive director David Raith says the governing body respects Lysacek's decision.

Douglas Razzano was selected to replace Lysacek at Skate America. Razzano opened the season with a second-place finish at Finlandia Trophy earlier this month.
