There&#8217;s Nothing Better To Cure What Ail&#8217;s Ya&#8217; Than A Series With The Royals

Every time I think the Tigers have proven they have no chance of making a postseason run they come out with a stellar performance that makes them look like a championship contender. Sure, their latest superb performance may have come against the lowly Royals, but a three-game sweep in which you outscore your opponents 33-6 [...]

The Market for Sherrill Heats Up

The Baltimore Sun is reporting that the Cards and Brewers are in hot pursuit of George Sherrill. The Phillies, Cubs, Dodgers, Reds, Marlins and Tigers have also scouted him lately but the Orioles are said to be looking for "two,if not three" prospects in return.

Will They be Buyers or Sellers

-The Tigers, 5.5 games behind division leading White Sox are trying to decide whether they will be buyers or sellers next week. While they sent scouts to look at O's George Sherrill Wednesday night, Dave Dombrowksi would not acknowledge if catcher Pudge Rodriquez might be available, after the Miami Herald reported Marlins interest. He would not say one way or the other which side of the market they planned to be on. He said, " We'll see what happens over the next week".<br />-The Atlanta Braves, with a 48-53 record and 6.5 games back must also decide in the next few days if they have much of a chance at a run this year or if they should give up some talent and look ahead to next year. There is interest in Mark Teixeira and pitcher Will Ohman. I guess the level of interestin those players and the team's play over this weekend will help management decide which side to be on.

He is well on his way to achieving such having already signed midfielders George Boateng, Peter Halmosi and Geovanni, forward Craig Fagan, defender Bernard [...]

With a week before the non-waiver trade deadline, rumors are flying everywhere. A quick round-up of Tigers items of note so far:
It appears that the Tigers had scouts at the Orioles/Blue Jays game when A.J. Burnett started. Whether they were scouting Burnett or lefty reliever George Sherrill is unclear.
Jimmy Goble's disastrous inning

I usually don't like to recap games. I'm not good at it and I prefer to show some T & A.

That said, the Royals-Tigers game last night was absolutely hilarious.

Jimmy Goble, who pitched in relief for the Royals endured one of the worst innings in Major League History.

Goble 1.0 IP 7H 10R 10ER 4BB

I'm no Bill James but I'm pretty sure that makes his ERA something around 115.

Right?

To make matters worse, the Royals brought infielder Tony Pena in to close the ninth.

And he pitched a perfect inning and even struck out Pudge Rodriguez.

I'm guessing when an infielder has a better pitching performance than you, its time to reconsider your occupation.

Jimmy, if I were you, I wouldn't even bother answering your phone in the morning. Just wake up, go to the nearest bus stop and head back to your AAA affiliate.

Overhyped: Andy Marte and John Van Benschoten

The following young men have been hyped as "Can't Miss Prospects", but they've obviously been overhyped and they surely are missing. The Suspects- Andy Marte and John Van Benschoten.

Marte has been hyped by the Braves, Red Sox, and Indians but he's quickly falling off the map batting .198 with an ugly .594 OPS over 4 seasons. He's been linked to Edgar Renteria, Kelly Shoppach, Guillermo Mota, Coco Crisp, David Riske, and Josh Bard, but doesn't hold a candle to any of them.

Van Benschoten is a former 1st round pick but has this horrific carrer line- 2-12, 8.66 era, 2.07 whip, and more walks than strikeouts...ouch!
