Avalanche of speculation: Will Patrick Roy be the next coach in Colorado?

It's almost a tradition: the Avalanche fire a coach, the Avalanche's media and fans wonder if Patrick Roy will take that guy's place. Roy, you may remember, won two Stanley Cups with the Avs after leaving the Montreal Canadiens. He's a beloved, if slightly revered character around the team, much like St. Pat is with the Montreal Canadiens. The Avalanche just brought Joe Sakic in to be executive vice president of the team, solidifying a link with their successful past that - let's face it - the current team needs desperately. The Avs finished with just 39 points, second worst in the league, and will be picking first at this year's draft. Sakic has a very unenviable job ahead of him, but one that's completely do-able. In the previously linked article, the Boston Globe's Keven Paul DuPont compares Sakic's situation to that of Cam Neely's. Sea Bass fixed things in Boston; can Joe do it in Colorado?

Montreal Canadiens Spotlight: Habs players WHC bound

Since the Montreal Canadiens disappointing playoff elimination by the Ottawa Senators, the Habs players have wasted no time by joining the fight for the gold medal at the World Hockey Championships.
Danny Kristo – Team USA 7gp, 1g-2a
Newly signed prospect Danny Kristo was part of the group of players who received the initial invitation to join team USA, and he accepted without hesitation. Kristo is no stranger to international spotlight as he won a bronze medal playing for the USA U18 team in 2007-2008, and a gold playing for the USA U20 team in 2009-2010. The Eden Prairie native’s pro experience has been limited to the nine games he played for the Hamilton Bulldogs this season, however he has managed to hold his own playing against men in the IIHF Tournament by contributing one goal and two assists in the seven games played.
Kristo’s invitation and offensive contributions to team USA has been a glowing v...

The Price is Wrong in Montreal: Hurting Habs without Goalie

The Montreal Habs are adopting the saying “When it rains, it pours” and rightfully so for this hockey team and city. Things went from bad to worse in their series against the Ottawa Senators.
Thursday was indeed a day that Carey Price and Habs Fans didn’t want that pouring rain to come down but alas it’s the story of Montreal’s season as it was announced that starting goalie Carey Price would be lost for the remainder of their Eastern Conference Quarterfinal Series against Ottawa with what we are being told is a lower-body injury.

Price, 25 years old, appeared to be injured after Cory Conacher tied the game for the Senators with just 23 seconds left in regulation during Game 4. He then got up very gingerly and seemed to be laboring in pain while making a save at the end of regulation.
During OT, Price was replaced by back-up Peter Budaj, who proceeded to allow Kyle Turris’ game winner in the net less than three minutes into the OT period. Sending all Habs fans yet again heart-broke...

Montreal G Carey Price out with lower-body injury

Canadiens goaltender Carey Price will miss the rest of first-round playoff series with the Ottawa Senators because of a lower-body injury.

The team announced the decision Thursday before Game 5, with Montreal trailing 3-1 and facing possible elimination. Price has struggled during the series and appeared to hurt his groin late in regulation of Game 4.

With Price out, Peter Budaj is to make his first career playoff start. Robert Mayer of the AHL Hamilton Bulldogs is his backup.

The Canadiens have been hit hard by injuries. A day earlier, captain Brian Gionta was ruled out for the rest of the playoffs with a torn left biceps tendon. He is to have surgery Friday. Also injured are forwards Lars Eller, Brandon Prust and Ryan White.

Michel Therrien on Brian Gionta: "Our captain was crying in my arms"

I'm sure it's crushing for a captain of a playoff team to re-injure himself. It must be doubly crushing for Montreal Canadiens captain Brian Gionta, watching his team go down three games to one against the Ottawa Senators. Knowing that thanks to a surgery to repair a torn left bicep he won't be back until training camp, and then realizing that his team is on the cusp of elimination with an injury to Carey Price thrown in, it must be crushing.

Habs coach Michel Therrien, though, when asked how Gionta was taking the news, came up with probably the worst thing a coach could say about his captain:

“When he heard the news, our captain was crying in my arms.”

Metaphorically or literally, this is not something a fanbase wants to have a mental image of. Therrien could have just said "Brian's upset," or some variation of such. But no, out comes something that makes Gionta sound like he needed to be rocked back and forth while being sung a lullaby. Way to...

Canadiens' Gionta out rest of playoffs

Montreal Canadiens forward Brian Gionta will have surgery on his torn left biceps, knocking him out of the rest of the playoffs.

The Canadiens announced Wednesday that Gionta undergo surgery on Friday. The Montreal captain sat out Games 2 and 4 of the team's first-round playoff series against the Ottawa Senators with what was called an upper body injury.

Gionta was limited to 31 games in the 2011-12 season due to torn biceps.

Ottawa leads the best-of-seven series 3-1 with Game 5 on Thursday at Montreal.

The Canadiens did have some good news as center Lars Eller has resumed skating. He was taken from the ice on a stretcher in Game 1 with a concussion and facial injuries after an open-ice hit by Ottawa defenseman Eric Gryba, who was suspended two games. There was no immediate word on when Eller will return.

Coach Michel Therrien said forwards Brandon Prust and Ryan White would both sit out Game 5 with upper body injuries.

Also, goalie Carey Price is considered day-to-day with a lower body injury. Pric

Ottawa Sun Adds Fuel to Senators-Canadiens Series With ‘Boot Those Habs’ Cover (Photo)

The Senators-Canadiens series is one that doesn’t need any off-ice help to stoke the flames, but that is not stopping the Ottawa Sun from getting involved — and trying to sell a few extra copies while they’re at it.
The Ottawa tabloid raised some eyebrows following Game 1 when it ran a cover that read “First Blood Sens” with a picture of Montreal forward Lars Eller laying in a pool of blood following a hit from Eric Gryba. The Sun was back at it Tuesday in advance of Game 4. This time, they’re going at the Habs as a whole with a headline reading “Boot Those Habs” depicting a boot about to stomp on a Canadiens jersey. Clever.
However, the Sun didn’t stop there. In addition to the cover, the paper also ran a “Top 10 reasons why we HATE Montreal” story. Naturally, Montreal defenseman P.K. Subban takes up two spots on the list.
See the Ottawa Sun cover below.

The only person missing from the Ottawa Senators thrashing of the Montreal Canadiens was WWE chairman/mouthpiece Vince McMahon.
It is true that these are two teams that hate each other with a passion that is usually limited to a blood feud.
However, what erupted in the third period that contest was downright ugly.

Crazy Line Brawl Breaks Out In Senators-Canadiens Playoff Game

It’s not often that you see a line brawl in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, but tensions have been growing between the Senators and Canadiens ever since Eric Gryba took out Lars Eller in Game 1. Ottawa’s Zach Smith crosschecked Ryan White right off the face-off and that’s when all hell broke loose. 19 players had penalties in the third period alone.

Here’s a look at the Habs bench after the brawls:

The Senators went on to win 6-1, putting them up 2-1 in the series.

Canadiens, Senators brawl during Game 3

The Montreal Canadiens-Ottawa Senators rivalry has been growing by the second ever since Eric Gryba lit up Lars Eller. After the Senators managed to gain a 5-1 lead, the Canadiens let their frustrations get the better of them in game three. Unfortunately for them when they started this line brawl they figured they would win, but they thought wrong. The Senators dusted them up in this line brawl and Ottawa is in command of this series. It’s not often you see a line brawl in a playoff game and this one will be one to remember. The box score for the brawl is a long read: Montreal’s bench after the line brawl was pretty light. [HockeyVideoHD]

Carey Price pulls out tooth, gives it to trainer

It take a lot to knock an NHL player out of the game and losing a tooth is not enough to do it. Montreal Canadiens goalie Carey Price lost a tooth, presumably during a collision with his own defenseman Jarred Tinordi. Price yanked the tooth out during a whistle, skated over to the trainer to drop it off for safe keeping and then returned to his net to keep playing. Oddly enough, Ottawa Senators goalie Craig Anderson lost a tooth last night after he took a shot to the head. These goalies have some serious complaints to lodge with the companies that made their helmets, no reason to be losing teeth with a helmet on.
Eric Gryba Suspended Two Games for Hit on Montreal’s Lars Eller (Video)

The NHL has handed down its second playoff suspension in as many days, this time to Ottawa’s Eric Gryba.
Gryba was suspended two games for his hit during Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals on Thursday that bloodied Monteal’s Lars Eller and sent the Canadiens forward to the hospital. Gryba was assessed a five-minute major penalty for interference and a game misconduct for the hit, which took place during the second period of the Senators’ 4-2 win.
It has been debated whether Gryba deserved a suspension for the blow, since Eller had control of puck at the time and the Senators defenseman did not launch himself or hit with an extended elbow. NHL director of player safety Brendan Shanahan agreed that Gryba’s intentions were not malicious, but he determined that Gryba had illegally targeted Eller’s head.
Tensions have boiled on both sides following the hit, with Ottawa coach Paul McLean placing blame for the injury on a dangerous pass by Raphael Diaz (or “number 61″). Montrea...

Canadiens Forward Brandon Prust Calls Senators Coach Paul MacLean a ‘Bug-Eyed Fat Walrus’

OK, so the Canadiens-Senators series just got real good, and we’re only one game into things.
A little more than 12 hours after Ottawa’s Eric Gryba delivered a nasty-looking check to Montreal’s Lars Eller that left Eller in a pool of his own blood on the ice, things are continuing to heat up.
After Game 1, Ottawa coach Paul MacLean criticized Montreal defenseman Raphael Diaz for the pass that put Eller in a vulnerable position, saying that Eller should be upset at Diaz for putting him int that position.
“[If I'm Eller], I’m really mad at player 61, whoever he is, because he passed me the puck in the middle of the rink when I wasn’t looking,” MacLean told the media after the game. “That’s always been a dangerous place as far as I know. Ever since I’ve been playing this game, that’s a dangerous place to be – bad things happen.
“I think it’s a hockey play that ended up going badly for Lars Eller.”
Montreal forward Brandon Prust was asked about that Friday, and this is what he ha

Ottawa Sun Highlights Bloody Lars Eller With Controversial ‘First Blood Sens’ Cover (Photo)

One of the most lasting images of these Stanley Cup playoffs will be Lars Ellers laying facedown in a pool of his own blood, and the Ottawa Sun isn’t going to let anyone forget about it any time soon.
The Montreal forward was hit by Ottawa’s Eric Gryba in Game 1 of a first-round series between the Canadiens and Senators that sent Eller crashing to the ice. Eller was initially lay motionless on the ice with blood pouring out of his face. That blood quickly pooled as the medical staff quickly jumped onto the ice to tend to Eller.
The Ottawa tabloid, the Ottawa Sun, decided to use a photo of Eller laying on the ice on its front cover of Friday’s paper. See what the cover looks like below.

Lars Eller Taken off Ice, Transported to Hospital After Suffering Vicious Hit While Receiving Suicide Pass (Video)

Lars Eller was taken off the ice on a stretcher during Game 1 of the Canadiens-Senators playoff series, and it did not look good for the Montreal center.
Eller was receiving a suicide pass from teammate Raphael Diaz when he was hit by Eric Gryba on or around his head. Gryba received a five-minute major for interference as well as a game misconduct.
“Lars Eller suffered head and facial injury. He is conscious and alert,” the Canadiens announced on the team’s Twitter account. “Eller has been taken to the hospital for further examination and will remain under observation.”
Elliotte Friedman reported that Eller’s injury was being described as a broken nose (and hopefully nothing more).
Check out a video of the hit below, but be warned — it’s a bit graphic.

Canadiens’ Lars Eller leaves on a stretcher after brutal Eric Gryba hit (video)

Ottawa Senators defenseman Eric Gryba delivered a huge check to Canadiens forward Lars Eller Thursday night that left him bleeding profusely with head and facial injuries.
“Lars Eller suffered a head and facial injury,” the team said in a statement. “He is conscious and alert. He has been taken to the hospital for further examination and will remain under observation.”
We’re all pretty sure Gryba will be hearing from the NHL about this one. After the hit, he was given an interference major and ejected. Canadian network RDS reports (via USA Today) that Gryba will have a hearing at noon on Friday.

“I stepped up to make a hit and I kept my shoulder down,” Gryba told the Ottawa Sun. “He received the puck by the time I hit him, I saw on the replay,” he said. “My elbow was down and there was no intent to hurt him whatsoever. I hope he is going to be OK.
“I’m not out here to hurt anybody and it’s never a good scene or anything like that. Hopefully he has a full and speedy recovery.”

Canadiens play April Fools' prank on rookie

via NHL.com The Montreal Canadiens held an open Easter Sunday practice for fans and drew a surprising 17,000 fans. The Canadiens started the show pulling a prank on rookie Nathan Beaulieu, who made his NHL debut Saturday night. Beaulieu was the first one to take the ice and the rest of the Canadiens stopped at the bench and left him to skate a lap around the ice by himself. You know Beaulieu was pumped when one of the vets most likely told him to lead the team onto the ice. He knew he was had after about ten strides.
