Devils winger Ilya Kovalchuk knocked Janne Pesonen off his feet as Russia lost to Finland at the World Championships Friday.

And he also got a nice stick-to-the-face in later.

The Aftermath of Another Lost Season

It's been awhile since the Winnipeg Jets hit the ice and then quickly cleaned out their lockers at the end of their second season in Winnipeg.

It also seemed like a long time before the playoffs started after that last loss to the Montreal Canadiens in late April.

And it seems like even a longer time until the Jets will once again hit the ice.

So cruel - not to have playoff hockey in Winnipeg this time of year.

So cruel the Jets didn't make it.

Fact is, they didn't deserve it.

Watching the upstart New York Islanders and what they have accomplished and seeing the team they put together relates to me that the Jets were not that team - a team that was going to make the playoffs.

With next year's move to a tougher division looming, the Jets have little time or space to make mistakes this off-season and make it a hat trick of playoff eliminiation before the playoffs begin.

It was very interesting how the fans didn't have that same passi...

Peter Tessier: Jets Prospects Starting to Impress More than Winnipeggers

I've got playoff thoughts too if you want to follow me on Twitter HERE

If there is any good news for the Winnipeg Jets and their playoff starved fans it’s coming from the CHL. Not just Mark Scheifele in the OHL with the Barrie Colts but also from Adam Lowry of the Swift Current Broncos who was named the WHL player of the year last year.

Starting with Lowry, who was the Jets 3rd round pick...

Enough Of Good Byfuglien Bad Byfuglien

from Gary Lawless of the Winnipeg Free Press,

The Winnipeg Jets cannot and will not move forward as a team with Byfuglien as he is currently constructed. He is a foundation piece and his half-the-time good and half-the-time bad output leaves the team with unsure footing.

The guessing and hoping has to end. It has to be now or never, where Byfuglien is concerned. He's either going to decide to be elite and do what is necessary to reach that level or he's going to continue to depreciate.

Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff must determine whether Byfuglien is on the verge of a breakthrough. Will Byfuglien transform into a defenceman the Jets can count on every night? Or will it be the status quo?

If it's the latter, it's time to part ways.

Trade him now while there is still value. The perfect deal likely won't be out there but not moving will haunt this franchise.

Rangers Need Two Points, Jets Loss or Senators Collapse to Clinch Playoff Spot

Despite the Rangers excruciating loss to the Panthers last night, they actually received some good news in their hunt for a playoff spot as the ninth place Winnipeg Jets lost to the Washington Capitals, meaning the Blueshirts magic number is now two.

If the Rangers can gain just two measly points in their final two games (@Carolina on Thursday, vs. the Devils at MSG on Saturday) the Blueshirts are going back to the playoffs.

The Rangers can also back into the postseason if the Jets lose their lone remaining game at home against the Canadiens on Thursday or if the Senators lose their remaining three games.

If both the Senators (52 points) and Rangers (52 points) lose out and the Jets (51 points) win Thursday night, the Senators will be eliminated as the Rangers own the first tie breaker which is regulation/overtime wins (ROW).

	Here are the standings...

Jets edge Sabres to stay in hunt

Antti Miettinen scored with 7:36 left to keep the surging Winnipeg Jets in the playoff race with a 2-1 win over the Buffalo Sabres on Monday night.

Ondrej Pavelec stopped 24 shots, including a huge glove save on Thomas Vanek with 5:45 left to preserve the victory. Winnipeg (24-19-3) improved 6-0-1 in its past seven and moved within a point of the idle New York Rangers, who hold the Eastern Conference's eighth and final playoff spot in the final week of the season.

Just as important, the Jets also crept to within a point of Southeast Division-leading Washington. That sets up a critical showdown on Tuesday, when Winnipeg travels to play the Capitals.

Aaron Gagnon also scored for Winnipeg, while Vanek scored the lone goal for Buffalo.

Kyle Okposo will not be suspended for his hit on Zach Bogosian

According to Ken Wiebe of the Winnipeg Sun, Islanders forward Kyle Okposo's shoulder to head hit on Winnipeg Jets defenseman Zach Bogosian was reviewed by the NHL's Department of Player Safety and there will be no supplemental discipline. Nor should there be, in my opinion. It's doesn't look like Okposo targeted Bogosian's head.

There is also some question if Bogosian suffered a concussion on the play. I wondered about that too, since Bogosian challenged Okposo to a fight later on in the game, so we will see. No one wants to see a person get hurt.

I can say with confidence, that Bogosian is not going to get "a lot" of empathy from Wild fans, especially after he buried Wild forward Pierre-Marc Bouchard last December and escaped supplemental discipline on the play. Bouchard missed the final 41 games of the regular season with a concussion, as a result of the Bogosian hit.

Peter Tessier: Breakdowns Cost Jets vs Chippy Isles

The first goal and the fourth goal allowed by the Winnipeg Jets were preventable. Take those two out and perhaps the Jets win a 3-2 or 4-2 instead of falling to the Islanders 5-4 in OT. Two defensive breakdown where a player was left wide open cost the Jets the game and that's what fans should take away from it, at least those looking to understand why the Jets could not continue their winning...

Zach Redmond Shows Off Gruesome Scar After Skate Split His Leg Wide Open (Photo)

Scars are just as much a part of hockey as pucks, pads and swear words.
Zach Redmond, who was cut by teammate Antti Miettinen’s skate during a practice at PNC Arena in Raleigh on Feb. 21, has made a “miraculous” recovery, Jets team physician Dr. Peter MacDonald told the Winnipeg Free Press.
And he’s got the cool scar to prove it, as seen below.

Zach Redmond reveals scar from horrific injury

Cited by doctors as a “miracle” recovery, Winnipeg Jets forward Zach Redmond was back on the ice skating on Friday morning, only a little more than a month after suffering a lacerated femoral artery after a teammate’s skate gashed his upper leg. Jets team doctor Peter MacDonald was quoted in the Winnipeg Press as stating that the team expects Redmond back in training camp next fall, referring to that timetable as “nothing short of a miracle.” A photo revealing the ghastly scar on Redmond’s upper right leg provided sufficient and disturbing evidence of just how much damage was done when a teammate stepped on the back of his leg with his skate during a morning skate in late February. Via a tweet from the CBC’s Mitch Peacock: Yikes. And while the scar is a grim reminder of just how severe the injury was and how much worse it could have been for Redmond, what’s far more important is astounding doctor’s by making a remarkable, unexpected and unbelievable comeback so soon.
Winnipeg Jets defender Zach Redmond is lucky to be alive following having his femoral artery slashed by a skate just over six weeks ago, and even more incredible is that he returned to the ice today. As a reminder of what happened, Zach has a nice little scar which you can check out below.

Docs for #nhljets expect Zach Redmond to make full recovery and be in training camp, if not back sooner. Call it a “miracle.” #bn

Evander Kane Tosses Alexei Emelin’s Helmet During Fight in Jets-Canadiens Game (Video)

Alexei Emelin needs to use better judgement when picking his battles.
The Canadiens defenseman, who was pummeled by Zdeno Chara in a game against the Bruins back on March 3, antagonized Winnipeg’s Evander Kane into a fight Thursday night. Kane didn’t take kindly to the instigating, and he proceeded to rip Emelin’s helmet off, toss it violently to the ice and land several hard rights to the back of the blueliner’s head before referees separated the two.
Kane won the bout, but his forcible helmet removal earned him a game misconduct. Was it deserved? See for yourself in the video below.

Evander Kane chucks foe's helmet during fight

Fighting Evander Kane isn't usually something people enter into lightly, at least not after his one and done knockout of Matt Cooke a couple years ago. He's not only one of the best forwards in the league (and probably the best player on the Winnipeg Jets), he's also got a little temper on him. Alexei Emelin learned the hard way that chirping and antagonizing Kane usually doesn't end well. Wow. Kane wound up with five for fighting and a game misconduct. In case you missed it in the blur, he ripped Emelin's helmet off of his head and threw it over the forward to the ice. It's unclear if that was Kane's intention or if he just has terrible aim and he was going for throwing it at Emelin. Whatever the reason, that's a no-no. You can fight someone, and Emelin seems to agitate people. But ripping off their helmet before they can even throw a swing? Not only is that an awesome feat of coordination and speed, it's stupid. Just fight, Evander -- or...

Jets sign defenseman Jacob Trouba

The Winnipeg Jets signed defenseman Jacob Trouba to a contract on Tuesday.

The 19-year-old played 37 games with the University of Michigan during the 2012-13 season.

Trouba, from Rochester, Mich., had 12 goals, 17 assists and 88 penalty minutes in that span.

He was selected to the 2013 Central Collegiate Hockey Association's All-Rookie team determined by a vote of the conference's head coaches and was also honored as the best offensive defenseman in the CCHA.

Trouba has won three medals for Team USA during his career, most recently a gold medal at the 2013 world junior championships in Ufa, Russia. He also took home a gold medal at the 2011 world under-18 championships and a silver in the 2010 world under-17 hockey challenge.

He was originally drafted by the Winnipeg Jets in the first round, ninth overall, in the 2012 draft.

Blake Wheeler Makes Boston Pay As Bruins Suffer ‘Divisional Downer’ With Chance to Move Up in Standings (Video)

Blake Wheeler used to be with the Bruins, and he seems to delight in reminding them of that fact whenever the two teams meet.
Wheeler scored two goals, including an empty-netter that clinched the game, as the Winnipeg Jets came back to beat the Bruins 3-1 on Tuesday night. It was Boston’s fifth loss of the year in which they led heading into the third period, and this loss hurts all the more considering it was a chance for the B’s to tie Montreal in the Northeast Divison standings.
Instead, it was Winnipeg making noise in the Southeast, so NESN Nation’s Dan Duquette is awarding Wheeler our “Divisional Downer” player of the game. Who’s yours?

Redmond's artery lacerated by skate

Winnipeg Jets defenseman Zach Redmond underwent three hours of surgery Thursday afternoon after his right femoral artery and a vein were lacerated by an ice skate during a morning practice drill.Redmond, who was cut mid-thigh, was taken to a nearby Raleigh hospital for treatment. Winnipeg is in town to visit the Carolina Hurricanes Thursday night."What took place is we were trying to get our extra players conditioned, there was a 1-on-1 battle at the net and (Redmond) was tripped up, ended up on his back and the player happened to step on him just above the back of the knee," Jets coach Claude Noel told the Winnipeg Sun. "It's a fairly wide cut, so we're taking him to the hospital and we'll see what the diagnosis is when they take a look at him there. He lost a fair bit of blood and he's in some pain. It looks like it's a vein. It's tough on your team."The team released the following statement on the incident:"Zach is currently restin...

Tobias Enstrom Injury Will Be Tough Blow to Winnipeg’s Offensive Attack (Video)

For a team like the Winnipeg Jets that is already fighting to remain in the playoff picture, keeping your best players healthy and on the ice is a top priority.
Unfortunately for the Jets, who are tied with Washington for last place in the Southeast Division, they will be without defenseman Tobias Enstrom when they host the Bruins on Sunday. Enstrom left Saturday’s loss to Pittsburgh with an upper body injury.
For more on how the injury to Enstrom, who missed 20 games with a broken clavicle last season, will impact Winnipeg’s fortunes going forward, check out the video above from W.B. Mason Bruins Face-Off Live.
