UDM’s Ray McCallum, Jr. to forego senior year, enter NBA Draft

NY Times
The 2012 Horizon League Player of the Year will not be around to go back-to-back. Detroit Mercy guard Ray McCallum, Jr. has announced that he will forego his senior year of eligibility and enter the NBA Draft. In a move that shocked most of Titan Nation, I saw this coming after Junior’s sophomore season, despite the fact that Ray McCallum, Sr. is still the Titans’ head coach. And with the improvements he made to his overall game last summer, the odds swung heavily in favor of him bolting in my mind.
McCallum (6-feet-3, 190 pounds) helped lead Detroit to its second consecutive postseason appearance with a trip to the NIT, along with recording its second straight 20 win season. He finished as the Horizon League player of the year, averaging 18.7 points, 5.1 rebounds and 4.5 assists. In 2011, McCallum, Jr. led UDM to the NCAA Tournament and a first round loss to Kansas.
The school released two statements Saturday:

VIDEO: Detroit’s Doug Anderson wow’s the crowd at the college dunk contest

If you’re a college basketball fan in the state of Michigan, you might want to make yourself more familiar with Detroit Titans junior Doug Anderson.
Why?
Because he might be the best dunker in the country and I don’t mean just at the college level.
Anderson, Detroit’s fourth-leading scorer at 12.1 points per game to go with 4.6 rebounds took home the college dunk contest last Thursday in Atlanta during the Final Four festivities. And aside from the performance itself, the amazing thing about Anderson was apparently these were his basic dunks.
The NBA should be taking some notes because this dunk contest just embarrassed the Association’s.

If you don’t like the NBA Slam Dunk contest, you probably appreciated the college slam dunk contest where Detroit-Mercy Titan’s Doug Anderson put on a show. It would be difficult to argue against him as being better than everyone else in the NBA with what he calls ‘in game dunks.’ Check out his final dunk that gave him the title: Unreal. You can checkout the rest of his dunks from the contest at friend of the site, It’s Always Sunny In Detroit

Detroit’s Doug Anderson does unholy things to basketball rims

If you missed him on Sportscenter’s Top 10 throughout the year, Detroit’s Doug Anderson has some harsh feelings towards basketball rims. They stole his lunch money. They picked on him through his awkward years. They would yell “Kool-Aid!” when his momma walked by wearing red.
And now he takes out his anger on each and every rim he comes across. Poor, poor rims.
Four tremendous dunks, capped off by a rediculous 360 reverse eastbay (through the wrong leg – even better). Creativity, bounce, extension, execution; all the necessary ingredients for 10s. Anderson is already my write-in submission for the grown man league’s dunk contest in 2014.

Video: Detroit's Doug Anderson defies gravity with two alley oop dunks

Doug Anderson is a senior guard for the Detroit Titans basketball team. And Anderson may just be the best collegiate dunker you haven't heard of yet, until now.The 6-foot-6 Michigan native displayed some major hang time during Detroit's 92-62 home victory over Cleveland State on Tuesday. The first example of his dunking ability came just three minutes into the game when he received an alley oop pass from beyond the arc and then proceeded to sky high above the rim to slam it home. Notice on the slow-mo replay how the crown of his head is higher than the rim at one point during his flight.Just four minutes later into the game, Anderson delivers yet another jaw-dropping dunk. He takes another alley oop while charging full speed at the basket and then finishes with a two-handed flush.Anderson finished the game with nine points and three rebounds in 20 minutes of play. He is averaging 11.8 PPG and 4.7 RPG during the season overall.Anderson spent the first two years of his college ...

Doug Anderson had enough of Detroit Mercy’s 92-62 win over Cleveland State Tuesday night, so he decided to leave the gym…through the roof. Anderson threw down two ridiculous high-wire act dunks that got the sparse Calihan Hall on their feet.
If the whole basketball thing doesn’t work out for Anderson (Harlem Globetrotters), he might be able to find a job with Delta or Southwest. Here’s a clip of Anderson’s two rim-rockers.

“Dunking Doug Anderson” – best dunker in the country – compilation video

University of Detroit Mercy’s Doug Anderson is the best dunker in the college game. And he’s certainly been celebrated on this site before (here, here, here and the nastiest one – here). And my red Kool Aid lips aside, I’d put my money on him in an NBA dunk contest.
Finally (it’s about time), someone else has joined the IASID Dunkin’ Dougie bandwagon. The Horizon League put together a compilation of “Dunking Doug” throwing down some freakish dunks in practice and in a few games this season. Mars Blackmon coined Michael Jordan’s little catchphrase “it’s gotta be the shoes”, but for Anderson, it’s gotta be the pogo sticks he has for legs.
His leaping ability is just silly.

Eight of University of Detroit Mercy’s Doug Anderson’s ten points Wednesday came from rim-rocking jams. Two of the ten came from this one-handed alley oop catch on a lob from Ray McCallum, Jr. The Toledo Rockets, ironically, weren’t the only ones with rocket fuel. Anderson’s Twitter handle (@HeGotHops_23) pretty much describes it to a ‘T’. He’s a walking Sportscenter highlight. …and then he had this putback dunk off a Ray McCallum, Jr. miss a few minutes later.

Detroit’s Doug Anderson’s monster putback dunk (VIDEO)

University of Detroit Mercy forward Doug Anderson deserved to be arrested for the assault he put on the Carnesecca Arena rim Tuesday. In the Titans’ game against St. John’s, Anderson slammed home a missed jumper by Ray McCallum, Jr. that (and I’m not exaggering) I don’t think more than a handful of NBA players could have finished.
Seth Davis of Sports Illustrated tweeted during the game: “This Doug Anderson kid on Detroit has filthy ups. Shades of Jason Richardson.”
Anderson isn’t yet well-known across the country for his ridiculous dunking ability, but I have been touting him since last year, his first with UDM. He’s an automatic win in the College Slam Dunk contest in March. Here’s video of the Tuesday putback:
ESPN thought highly enough of it to make it a candidate for their “Best of the Best” plays. You can VOTE FOR DA’s dunk here.

Video: Detroit Mercy star's 360 windmill dunk

If you haven't seen University of Detroit Mercy junior forward Doug Anderson play, you aren't looking high enough. With a vertical leap equal to a the Challenger space shuttle, Anderson has throw down a dunk or fifteen this year that have caused jaws to hit the floor. At six feet, six inches tall, Anderson can often out-rebound guys four and five inches taller than he is simply by jumping over them. He's already had a Sportscenter top play this year and with a little publicity assistance, he could find himself a regular in the top ten next year. In the waning moments of Detroit Mercy's open practice Thursday, as they prepare to play Kansas, Anderson was coaxed into showing off his insane dunking ability.

Anderson won't find himself in the College Slam Dunk Contest this year because it's reserved for seniors, but I think that's just an excuse to keep him from making it a "no contest." In fact, you could have put him up against this year&#...

Titans face tough test Friday

DETROIT -- A member of the Loyola coaching staff had some words for Detroit Titans center Eli Holman in the midst of his 20-point effort Tuesday.

"Are you ever gonna miss?" the coach asked Holman during the Titans' 80-71 victory at Calihan Hall in the opening round of the Horizon League tournament.

It was a valid question at the time. Holman, a 6-foot-11 senior, was 13-for-13 from the field and the free-throw line combined, and nearly 35 minutes had ticked off the clock.

Holman, the Horizon Leagues Sixth Man of the Year, had been waiting for a game like this since he scored 21 against Western Michigan on Dec. 8.

That game was his first one back from a season-opening suspension, and until Tuesday, it was his best scoring output this season.

"It (his performance Tuesday) was big," Holman said. "But it came from my teammates, who were opening up the floor, who were driving, being more aggressive. And that's what we need to do more, be aggressive in getting to the rim.

"I think there's no team in this league that can stop us from getting inside the paint."

If there's one Horizon League team that could negate the Titans' strong post presence, it's Youngstown State, the Titans' opponent Friday night at Valparaiso. Youngstown State has taken 688 three-point shots this season, making 264 of them (38 percent).

Youngstown State spreads the floor with up to four outside threats at once, a personnel package that can be nightmarish for a coach who runs a more traditional, balanced attack.

"They can really spread the floor," Titans coach Ray McCallum said before Thursday's practice. "They're good off the dribble, and they can really make plays in between, as well.

"They are going to be one pass, two pass, shot, and they can make transition threes. When they're going, they're capable of making 10, 15 out there.

McCallum says that the volume of outside scoring isn't the only problem.

"It's hard because it moves our bigs away from the basket, and makes it tough to play (LaMarcus) Lowe and Eli together a lot of time," McCallum said.

A key to keeping the Youngstown State attack at bay will be the containment of guards (and leading scorers) Kendrick Perry and Blake Allen. Perry averages a conference-best 16.4 points and Allen is right behind him with 13.1.

To compound a matchup problem, both guards are about as trigger-happy as Machine Gun Kelly (149 attempts for Perry and 206 for Allen).

If the Titans are to break the tie with Youngstown State this season (they split their two meetings in the regular season), then they have to, as coach McCallum says, "choke off the three."

The Titans should have experience in this regard. In their two games against each other this season, Youngstown State has hoisted up an astronomical 54 three-pointers.

The effort to contain the three-pointers must begin up top with Ray McCallum Jr. The Titans' point guard and defensive instigator will have his hands full with a Youngstown backcourt armed with a hair-trigger offensive strategy and quick guard play.

It starts with Ray defensively," coach McCallum said. "At the point of attack, he has to pressure the ball and play good perimeter defense, then he has to be a high assist guy. We need a big all-around game from him."

Detroits backcourt also needs to work on getting out in transition, on both ends. Youngstown State has a propensity to take -- and make -- three-point shots on a fastbreak. In turn, their smaller lineup should be broken down by the hyper-athletic front court the Titans bring to the gym.

Holman forms a formidable tandem with Lowe, even when theyre playing at different times.

When they play together, the pair of 6-footers form their own skyline in the low-post, complete with an area code and a subway stop. When coach McCallum splits them up, teams are provided zero respite from the big men.

That respite comes in the form of forward Evan Bruinsma, a mid-sized four with the heart of a pit bull and surprising touch around the rim.

I think we have an advantage with LaMarcus Lowe and myself, even Evan Bruinsma coming off the bench," Holman said. "I think we have a great presence.

Evan is our blue-collar guy. That's our garbage truck. That's our guy that we go to when we can't let a guy get to the rim, a guy who has been nothing but consistent.

The Titans have all the pieces in place. Now it's on them to take care of business.

And that business is winning a Horizon League title and earning an NCAA Tournament berth.

Video: Detroit Mercy player's monster dunk

University of Detroit Mercy small forward Doug Anderson has been cleared for take off. Anderson, a 6'6" junior college transfer from Mott Community College, is the best athlete Detroit basketball has seen in the past handful of years - and that includes the Pistons too. He's a one man dunk contest. A high-flier power dunker, Anderson should be a shoe-in for the College Slam Dunk contest at the end of the season. We'll go as far as guaranteeing a victory for him. Tonight, Valparaiso center Kevin Van Wijk felt the wrath of "Dunk" Anderson. Fox Sports Detroit's Dan Dickerson couldn't contain himself.
