Rangers to Eye Hendricks This Offseason?

Larry Brooks at the New York Post speculates that the Rangers are likely to pursue Capitals UFA Matt Hendricks this summer.

Brooks adds that the 32-year old Hendricks is a "jagged-edged center" who kills penalties and fits the "Black-and-Blueshirt" mold.

Hendricks, who was being paid $825,000 per, had 5g, 3a and was a -6 last season. He was also a 57% faceoff man during the regular season, however, that dipped to 40% in the Capitals series against the Rangers in which he also went scoreless.

...an older depth player, who doesn't score, is good on the penalty kill and can win faceoffs? Sounds like exactly what we heard about Jeff Halpern. How'd that work out?

...also just looking at the Rangers free agency situation, there really isn't any room for Hendricks on the roster, unless Sather makes a trade this offseason. Fourth liners such as Powe, Asham, Newbury, Boyle and Pyatt are all under contract next season. The only free agents the R...

Happy Hour – Same Old Craps

The Washington Capitals have quite the tortured history when it comes to the playoffs. They are nationally known as choking dogs, a team that can never feel safe when having a 3-1 or 3-2 series lead. The one year they made a run to the Stanley Cup finals, they managed to never have to play a Game 7, which helped their cause. Despite this knowledge, Capitals fans remained way too overconfident going into and during this series. Not surprisingly, the Caps didn’t show up for Game 7 at home, and were destroyed 5-0. This core group of Mike Green, Alex Ovechkin, and Nickolas Backstrom that fans were told would bring multiple Stanley Cups, once again failed to get out of the first round. In fact, despite making the playoffs for six straight years and winning the crappy Southeast division in five of those years, the Caps haven’t made it past the Second Round. You would think at some point the players and management might take some responsibility, but instead they decided to blame the refs f...

Capitals say Ovechkin played with hurt left foot

Alex Ovechkin played the last two games of the Washington Capitals' season with what the team said Thursday is a hairline fracture in his left foot.

Ovechkin was hurt during Game 6 of Washington's first-round playoff series against the New York Rangers, a 1-0 loss on Sunday. The Capitals didn't explain specifically how their captain got injured, but Ovechkin did get up a bit gingerly after dropping to the ice to block a shot in the first period.

He also played in Game 7 on Monday night, getting credited with 13 hits but only one shot, as Washington lost 5-0 at home and was eliminated.

Ovechkin, who led the NHL with 32 goals during the regular season, scored only once against the Rangers, in Game 1.

He played Thursday for Russia in an 8-3 loss to the United States in the world championships in Finland.

Before leaving town for that tournament, Ovechkin met with reporters Tuesday at the Capitals' practice facility and was asked whether he was dealing with any injuries during the playoffs.

Alex Ovechkin played with hairline fracture in foot

Washington Capitals star winger Alex Ovechkin is one tough son of a….well you get the idea. It was revealed today by the Capitals that Ovechkin had played the final two games of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals against the New York Rangers with a hairline fracture in his left foot as per NHL.com.
Ovechkin suffered the injury during Game 6 at Madison Square Garden after blocking a couple shots from Rangers defenseman Ryan McDonagh. The injury is not serious and will only require rest and not surgery.
Ovechkin joined Team Russia in the 2013 IIHF World Championships in Helsinki only to be eliminated yet again as the United States scored eight goals to hand Russia it’s worst ever loss in their World Championship history (that includes when they were the Soviet Union). Ovechkin himself scored a goal against US goaltender John Gibson.

John Tortorella thinks the Washington Capitals are whining

We've already discussed Alex Ovechkin's comments after the Washington Capitals departed from the playoffs in the first round. In our article, we highlighted that Ovechkin and his teammates would be better off not making excuses and should instead take responsibility for their actions.

As it turns out, New York Rangers coach John Tortorella wasn't a fan of Washington's comments either. In an article seen in the New York Daily News, Tortorella accused the Capitals of whining and he believes that's one of the reasons why they lost the series.

Blunt comments from Tortorella. Who would have thought?

“I like where our team is as far as how they handle themselves. We’ve got everybody and their brother whining up there in Washington about what happened in that series, and I think that’s a big reason why they lose that series. So I just think our mind-set is very good, as far as not letting anything bother us. (We’re) just getting ready to play each day: Pl...

Cap fans, PLEASE take off your friggin’ rose-tinted glasses and LOOK at what you’re dealing with here. As I’ve said elsewhere, George McPhee is one of the stupidest GM’s in sports. He makes some mystifyingly dumb personnel decisions–the latest one involved surrendering a talented, 21 year old forward with size (Phillip Forsberg) for a 31 year old retread who hadn’t scored 20 goals in the past three seasons (Martin Erat). When asked WHY he would make such an imbecilic move, his answer was that he wanted to win the Cup NOW!! REALLY, ELMER??!@? At the time of the rape (oops, I meant to say, “TRADE”), I recall thinking that after the Capitals get bounced out of the playoffs in the first round I wonder if anybody in Washington’s media pool will have the grapes to bring up McPhee’s stupid-assed reasoning vis a vis Forsberg, Martin Erat and Lord Stanley’s Cup. Predictably, no one has, so I will. To me, McPhee should have been pink slipped after he re-signed the talented, but perennially ...

Alex Ovechkin's exit comments raise plenty of questions

Washington Capitals captain Alexander Ovechkin had some very interesting parting words before he joined the Russian national team at the World Championships. A disappointing Game 7 loss should irritate Ovechkin, but it's not exactly something he's not familiar with. His team tends to exit in seven games quite often, giving fans high hopes then breaking their hearts.

It must be frustrating for the captain to not have playoff success, but when you couple that with constant comments about how he under produces in the post season, it hits a nerve. Factor in the fact that he basically single-handedly drug his team to their final Southeast Division championship, and it's perfectly understandable to see why this off-season and the criticism is more annoying than usual.

That still doesn't excuse his exit comments, which varied from "they [the NHL] wanted a game seven. For ratings. You know, lockout, escrow, league must make profit." to stating that Henrik Lun...

Caps left wondering about playoffs

As the Washington Capitals gathered at their practice facility Wednesday for exit meetings and the annual explanations about what went wrong in the playoffs, there were references to bad luck and bad bounces in their first-round elimination against the New York Rangers.

''If you're asking me if there's one specific thing, I don't know,'' defenseman Mike Green said, two days after Washington's 5-0 home loss in Game 7. ''Does anybody know? Do you know?''

There were blank looks, head shakes and shrugs in response to reporters' questions about whether there is a pattern to the six consecutive years of first- or second-round exits.

There was very little desire among players, general manager George McPhee or coach Adam Oates to openly criticize themselves or teammates - or look inside the organization for what could be improved.

''We need to take the next step,'' center Nicklas Backstrom said. ''I don't really have a good answer for

Another early playoff exit for Ovechkin, Capitals

Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin knows full well that his playoff failures are adding up.

And the two-time NHL MVP knows what that means for the way people think about his career.

Meeting with reporters Tuesday, a day after Washington's 5-0 home loss to the New York Rangers in Game 7 of a first-round series, the Russian wing says: ''Nobody remember losers. Everybody remember only winners.''

During Ovechkin's career, Washington has won three of nine playoff series and never advanced past the second round.

Against New York, he scored once in seven games after leading the NHL with 32 goals in the regular season.

Ovechkin declined to put the onus on himself, saying: ''In the playoffs, it doesn't matter if you score or not. ... You have to win.''

Alex Ovechkin’s NHL Conspiracy Theory

Oh boy.
On Monday Night Alex Ovechkin and his Washington Capitals were eliminated from the NHL Playoffs by the New York Rangers. On Tuesday morning, Pat Leonard of The New York Daily News reported that Ovi suggested to a Russian reporter that the NHL wanted the Rangers to win game 6 and force a game 7.
“Not saying there was a phone call, but they wanted Game 7,” Ovechkin reportedly said in Russian, translated and tweeted by Slava Malamud, a senior writer for Russian sports daily Sports-Express. “For ratings. You know, lockout, escrow, league must make profit.”

The game in question did see the Rangers get awarded five power plays. The Capitals had none.
Ovechkin is now heading to Europe to play for Russia in the World Championships. They take on the USA in the quarterfinals on Thursday night.

Ovechkin joining Russia for world championships

Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin will join Russia's team at the ice hockey world championships in Finland.

It will be Ovechkin's ninth appearance in the tournament. He helped Russia win the gold medal last year and in 2008. He has 26 goals and 18 assists in 55 games.

The news that he'll play for Russia comes Tuesday, a day after Ovechkin's Capitals were eliminated in the first round of the NHL playoffs with a 5-0 loss to the New York Rangers in Game 7 of their best-of-seven series.

After leading the league with 32 goals in the regular season, Ovechkin only scored once in the playoffs.

Will the Washington Capitals Ever Win a Stanley Cup?

Capital Disappointment Photo via DC Sports Bog The question has to be asked. As a life long Washington Capitals fan, I have to say this team frustrates me as much or more than my beloved Washington Redskins. The Washington Capitals always seem to be a regular season team that just can not win in the playoffs. For thirty years the Caps have always failed to live up to expectations when it mattered most. The past years have been disappointing, but I think last night’s loss takes the cake. Losing 5-0 on home ice in front of your own fans is just pitiful. Especially after the fact that you bring up the blown 2-0 series lead. The New York Ranger fans who attended the game at the Verizon Center last night heckled Braden Holtby early in the third period, which was flat out embarrassing. It was just the final punch in the gut to Holtby and the Capitals, their tribute to the Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist, who shut down the Capitals for most of the Eastern Conference quarterfinal series...

Ovechkin blames refs for ugly loss?

After losing 5-0 in a Game 7 embarrassment to the New York Rangers, Washington Capitols star Alex Ovechkin blamed the refs, basically saying the fix was in.

Tom Wilson loses skate blade, crawls to bench

If it weren’t for those ill-fated contests at intermission that invite fans down onto the ice for this or that, we’d likely forget just how slippery an everyday rink is. Capitals right wing Tom Wilson found out the hard way Sunday when he was suddenly stuck with just one blade to try to work himself around the ice. Wilson had just laid a hit when the blade of his left skate popped off, leaving him trying to stumble along. He tried to use his one skate, pushing with the bladeless foot, to get himself to the bench, but that soon proved too difficult as well, as he fell to his knees and did his best animal-in-distress crawling motion toward the Washington bench. It was quite the awkward moment for the Capitals rookie, who was appearing in just his second playoff game. Check out Wilson’s highlight reel — complete with the sound of the skate coming off — in the video below.

Someone Get the Capitals a Waaaabulance

I'm always going to feel confident about the Rangers winning no matter what, but after seeing the Capitals more concerned about a phantom slew foot than getting ready for a Game 7, I'm feeling better than ever.

Washington's Mike Green took an embarrassingly indiscipline penalty in the third period when he cross checked Derek Dorsett in the mouth after he thought the Rangers agitator kicked out his skates from behind. Unfortunately for Green and the Capitals the referee saw what everyone else did, that Dorsett lost his balance and both his legs kicked up as the players crashed into the boards...

Apparently the Capital players didn't see the above video, especially at the 1:22 mark showing there was absolutely no attempt at a slew foot, before making these statements...

	Braden Holtby (via Washington Post)...

“The one that we all had a problem with, obviously, was the one on Greenie. That’s a play that should be reviewed. It’s only because Greenie...

Tom Wilson loses skate blade and stumbles to bench (Video)

Washington Capitals forward Tom Wilson had some equipment trouble during Sunday's playoff game against the New York Rangers, which was only Wilson's second career NHL game. After delivering a huge flying hit to Rangers defenseman Ryan McDonagh, Wilson lost his skate blade on his left skate, then stumbled several times while trying to get back to the bench with only one skate. Welcome to the NHL, rookie.

Hopefully Wilson's equipment issues will be resolved for Monday night's Game 7 at the Verizon Center.

Alex Ovechkin Makes Mockery of Backchecking, Glides Into Zone During Rangers Goal (Video)

Alex Ovechkin is one of the game’s best offensive players, but his defensive skills — and efforts — are simply embarrassing.
At least they were on Wednesday night, when he was gliding through his defensive zone as the Rangers put up a third period insurance goal at Madison Square Garden.
Check out his pathetic attempt at backchecking in the video below, and if you have kids who play hockey, please don’t let them watch.

Someone Unplugged Alex Ovechkin’s Controller (GIF)

Washington Capitals fans surely can’t be happy with Alex Ovechkin’s hustle on the play pictured above where the Rangers scored a goal. For someone who said the Rangers don’t like to play physical, Ovechkin sure is getting in there and mixing it up on that play. But this GIF is just hilarious. It is about as perfect a GIF as you can get: Unless of course you are a Caps fan who is still too bitter to have your sense of humor back yet. Related posts: Alex Ovechkin Is On Fire The Capitals Sure Are Missing Alexander Semin 5 Keys For a Capitals Victory On Opening Night
