Kerry Fraser says referees got non-calls right on Blackhawks’ goal and non-goal against Red Wings

Since the Chicago Blackhawks' Patrick Kane scored the 2-1 goal (in the Red Wings' 3-1 victory last night) after Johan Franzen was boarded at the opposite end of the ice by Niklas Hjamarsson, but were denied another when Viktor Stalberg's shot and game-tying goal on Jimmy Howard was negated because the referees deemed Andrew Shaw to be interfering with Jimmy Howard's ability to make a save, the media's pounced on the situation and has addressed the situation in predictable talking-out-of-the-ivory-tower-to-those-uninformed, biased-boobs-who-happen-to-pay-their-salaries fashion:

They've insisted that the referees' decision to allow Franzen to be boarded and play to continue is "part of the game," but that their similarly discretionary call regarding ye olde "coincidental interference," which Wings fans are far too familiar with thanks to Tomas Holmstrom's tenure with the team, has no place in the game, and that the denial of the Ha...

Blackhawks’ Goal Waved Off With Questionable Call in Game 3 Loss to Red Wings (Video)

The Chicago Blackhawks looked to be all but done late in Game 3 of their Western Conference semifinals matchup with the Detroit Red Wings. However, a Patrick Kane goal looked to have turned the momentum.
Moments after Kane pulled Chicago to within one at 2-1, it appeared that the Blackhawks had tied the game on a Viktor Stalberg shot from the right wing. The puck squeaked through Detroit goalie Jimmy Howard, and it looked like a tie game. However, seemingly as soon as the puck had crossed the goal line, it was waved off by the referee.
The call had been that Andew Shaw had interfered with Howard in the crease and the goal was immediately waved off. If there is a replay with Sharp making clear and impactful contact with Howard, it hasn’t surfaced yet.
Making matters much worse for the Blackhawks is what came just about a minute later. That’s when Pavel Datsyuk beat Corey Crawford with a wrist shot at the other end of the ice to give Detroit the 3-1 lead, which is what ended up bein...

Sports Illustrated Writer Rips ‘Garbage Move’ by Joel Quenneville in Game 3

It’s hardly breaking news that the Detroit Red Wings and Chicago Blackhawks dislike each other, so it came as little surprise to see the end of Detroit’s Game 3 win devolve late into after-the-whistle scrums and extra shots.
But Sports Illustrated’s Allan Muir took exception to the strategy of Chicago coach Joel Quenneville in the waning moments.
• Garbage move by Quenneville to throw Shaw and Bickell out there at the end of the game. There was still a chance for Chicago to cut into Detroit’s lead, but he goes with guys who are frothing at the mouth. Bickell, who’d been running around for most of the third, was called for cross-checking (Danny) Cleary repeatedly at 19:00, effectively ending any chance the Hawks had of mounting a comeback. Shaw then hopped over the boards and earned a misconduct 47 seconds later for general hooliganism. If there was a message being sent there, it wasn’t that the Hawks would battle to the end. It’s that the Red Wings are completely in their heads.

In a losing effort, Patrick Kane still dazzled fans and viewers alike with a breakaway goal in the third period in Game 3 against the Detroit Red Wings. After a big hit along the boards left Red Wings forward Johan Franzen injured during the play, Kane took a pass from Duncan Keith, flew behind two Red Wing defenders and wristed a beauty past goalie Jimmy Howard.

Red Wings beat Blackhawks to take 2-1 series lead

The Chicago Blackhawks were controlling the puck and dominating play early in the second period. It took all of a half-minute for the Detroit Red Wings to swing the momentum.

Gustav Nyquist and Drew Miller scored 31 seconds apart midway through a previously scoreless game, helping the Red Wings beat the Blackhawks 3-1 on Monday night for a 2-1 lead in their Western Conference second-round series.

The top-seeded Blackhawks refused to roll over, pulling to 2-1 on Patrick Kane's goal 4:35 into the third period, and were a judgment call away from tying it about a minute later. Andrew Shaw's goal, however, was waved off because he was in the crease, the officials ruling he interfered with Detroit goaltender Jimmy Howard.

Chicago coach Joel Quenneville disagreed.

''He didn't touch the goalie,'' Quenneville said simply.

Blackhawks goalie Corey Crawford couldn't touch Pavel Datsyuk's shot 6:46 into the final period, which had already come back out of the net before Crawford sa

Hit ticks off Wings; Blackhawks fume over disallowed goal

DETROIT -- In the Chicago Blackhawks' minds, it was the turning point of Game 3.

For the Detroit Red Wings, it was only fair.

With the Wings leading 2-0 in the third period Monday night, Chicago defenseman Niklas Hjalmarsson knocked Johan Franzen down along the boards in the Blackhawks' end.

While Franzen lay crumpled to the ice, the Blackhawks were headed the other way, with an odd-man rush.

That rush resulted in Patrick Kane's goal, which beat Jimmy Howard five-hole at 4:35, cutting Detroit's lead to 2-1.

The Wings were livid that no penalty was called on Hjalmarsson.

"It should have been a two-minute penalty," Wings coach Mike Babcock said. "This is the way I look at it. Those referees are trying to get to the Stanley Cup final like the rest of us and it's fast.

"When I watch the replay and see it, it's a penalty. They don't get to watch the replay."

Just over a minute later, Viktor Stalberg, playing in his first game of the series, appeared t

Blackhawks goal waved off on controversial call

After Patrick Kane scored a goal to cut the Detroit Red Wings lead to one after a controversial no call when Johan Franzen was hit from behind, the referees were likely looking for a make up call. That’s exactly what Chicago Blackhawks fans will be saying happened here after a goal was disallowed because Andrew Shaw apparently interfered with goalie Jimmy Howard. Referee Brad Watson waved the goal off as soon as it crossed the goal line, so at least he was emphatic with his decision. From the NHL Rulebook: 69.1 Interference on the Goalkeeper - This rule is based on the premise that an attacking player’s position, whether inside or outside the crease, should not, by itself, determine whether a goal should be allowed or disallowed. In other words, goals scored while attacking players are standing in the crease may, in appropriate circumstances be allowed. Goals should be disallowed only if: (1) an attacking player, either by his positioning or by contact, impairs the goalkeeper’s ab...

Patrick Kane scores silky breakaway goal after controversial no call

Chicago Blackhawks forward Patrick Kane scored a slick breakaway goal in the third period after there was a controversial play where Detroit Red Wings forward Johan Franzen was hit from behind by Niklas Hjalmarsson and no penalty was called. The Red Wings players seemed shocked when the play wasn’t blown dead and Duncan Keith threw a pass up to Kane. Kane corralled the bouncing puck and then buried a nice shot between Jimmy Howard’s legs to cut the Red Wings lead to one. It was the only goal the Blackhawks would get though in their 3-1 game three loss.

Andrew Shaw Goal Waved Off on Controversial Interference Call: Video

The Chicago Blackhawks got on the scoreboard Monday night when Patrick Kane scored on a breakaway just seconds after the refs turned the other way on what appeared to be an obvious boarding penalty. The Detroit Red Wings were on the fortunate end of the whistle moments later, as Andrew Shaw’s apparent game-tying goal was waved off because of inadvertent goalie interference.
Kane’s goal came about because Niklas Hjalmarsson somehow avoided a penalty despite burying Franzen from behind into the glass with a two-handed cross check. As Franzen lay shaken up in the Chicago zone, Kane took a long pass and went five-hole on Howard.

The Blackhawks were not as fortunate on the Shaw play. Viktor Stalberg circled back from the goal line and fired one on Jimmy Howard — the puck appeared to ricochet in off Shaw’s leg or forearm, but the goal was waved off immediately, with Shaw cited for being in the crease and preventing Jimmy Howard from making a save (there was no penalty on the play).

Red Wings-Blackhawks Game 3 quick take: take your anger and shove it into the net

I get it. The Hawks will look at the goalposts and at the waved-off goal by Andrew Shaw and insist, despite the penalty disparity, that they should still be playing the Red Wings, who managed to hang on and defeat them 3-1.

I get that the media will insist that Shaw was pushed into the crease by Jakub Kindl, and that it should at least be 2-2--Puck Daddy already has the play of course (they were silent on Saturday, all evening long), and that Patrick Kane's goal was "completely legal" because the breakaway pass-over-Quincey-and-Smith's head was sent to him after Johnny Oduya cleanly hit johan Franzen who was down, but hey, the rules demand that play continue if one of what Eddie Olczyk would deem one of Oduya's "pushes" (see: his "push" to Justin Abdelkader, using his stick) just happened to drop a guy (clip? Clip? Nope).

They can all go *#$%@& themselves. The refereeing was terrible on both sides, but the Hawks "got" the g...

Viktor Stalberg Goes Head First Into The Boards

Viktor Stalberg was forced to leave Monday’s game 3 between the Blackhawks and Red Wings after missing on a hit and going directly head first into the endboards. Not surprisingly, Stalberg stayed down after taking the boards to the head, but somehow was able to skate off the ice under his own power and went directly to the locker room. Being the hockey player that he is, Stalberg returned to the ice a short time after the injury.

Chicago defenseman Duncan Keith and forward Michal Handzus missed practice Friday, though coach Joel Quenneville said both players are fine and will play in Game 2 of their second-round playoff series against Detroit on Saturday.

Handzus also missed two practices before Wednesday night's series opener, but the 6-foot-4 center managed to play 17 minutes in the 4-1 victory over the Red Wings.

Forward Viktor Stalberg worked outside of the top four lines in practice once again, and he said Quenneville wants him ''to produce more and be more effective.'' Stalberg was benched for Game 1 and Quenneville declined to say if he would play on Saturday.

The speedy Stalberg had nine goals and 14 assists in 47 games this season.

Boudreau, MacLean, Quenneville up for Jack Adams

Joel Quenneville, Bruce Boudreau and Paul MacLean have been announced as the finalists for the Jack Adams Award, given to the head coach who has contributed most to his team's success.

Quenneville led Chicago to a league-best 36-7-5 mark after opening the season by earning a point in each of its first 24 games, setting an NHL record. Quenneville previously won the award in 2000 with St. Louis.

In his first full season in Anaheim, Boudreau led the Ducks to the Pacific Division title and the second seed in the Western Conference playoffs. Anaheim was third overall in the NHL standings after finishing 25th the previous season. Boudreau previously won the award in 2008 with Washington.

MacLean, a finalist for the second straight year, led Ottawa to the No. 7 seed in the Eastern Conference while overcoming the prolonged absences of several key players.

Did Marian Hossa dive against Red Wings?

Aside from the NBC broadcast doing their best to try and justify Hossa’s blatant dive in the second period of the Western Conference semifinals against Detroit, the refs and the league obviously need to do a better job at recognizing this sort of thing, especially on this stage. Kronwall in no way had his stick in the midsection of Hossa whose pathetic attempt to draw a penalty actually worked. Mike Babcock’s reaction was also pretty hilarious. Where’s Raffi Torres when you need him? Kidding…

Chicago Blackhawks Stalberg benched for game one

Chicago Blackhawks head coach Joel Quenneville announced after the team’s morning skate that forward Viktor Stalberg will not play game one versus the Detroit Red Wings.
While Quenneville did not disclose any information on his decision, Chicago Tribune’s Chris Kuc tweeted that Stalberg questioned his role with the team. If this is true, the benching is warranted and could signal the end of Viktor’s Blackhawks playing days.

Stalberg is an unrestricted free agent, meaning he can sign elsewhere after the 2013 season. He is making just under $1 million this season with the Blackhawks, and has showed his game is maturing.
The Blackhawks have a handful of players without contracts for next season besides Stalberg, including Bryan Bickell, Nick Leddy, and Ray Emery. It is clear with a limited cap that Chicago cannot bring back everyone.
Stalberg may have just made that decision a little easier.
That being said, there is a chance the benching is for game one. Quenneville was also quo...

Blackhawks sideline reporter fired

Sad news out of the Windy City after Chicago Blackhawks reporter Susannah Collins gave the world one of the best Freudian Slips of all-time, she finds herself on the unemployment line. Collins was reporting prior to the start of the Blackhawks first Stanley Cup Playoff game and said that the team had a “tremendous amount of sex during the regular season.” What she meant to say was ‘success,’ which she did correct herself with. It seemed rather harmless, but hysterical. According to the Chicago Tribune, CSN Chicago announced on Friday they have parted ways with Collins, but did cite that it had nothing to do with her on-air flub. Which we find somewhat hard to believe. It is highly possible that it wasn’t directly tied to Wednesday incident only, as it appears that her remark brought publicity to her previous work, which was a series called “Sports Nutz.” She participated on this show back in 2009 and 2010. The show used sexual language as a regular gag with its sports reporting. War...

Video: NHL reporter's embarrassing slip-up

CSN Chicago’s Susannah Collins was doing her thing outside the Chicago locker room prior to the Blackhawks’ opening playoff game against the Minnesota Wild, when she got a little tongue-tied talking about the team’s thoughts that the playoffs, aka the second season, is the only season that matters in the NHL, despite the fact that “they’ve had such a tremendous amount of sex” during the regular season. The inordinate amount of sex the Hawks had while going 36-7 this year must have paid off because they took the first game 2-1 in OT. Collins, meanwhile, owned up to her mistake on Twitter… Erm, yeah. I meant to say success. My apologies, got a little tongue tied. #ItHappens #Doh! — Susannah Collins (@susannahcollins) April 30, 2013 Sure it was a verbal miscue on her part, but seeing that this is a team that employs Patrick Kane, there was probably some truth to Susannah’s slip-of-the-tongue.
