Predators relieve Associate Coach Peter Horachek of coaching duties

In a statement from Nashville Predators General Manager David Poile, the team has announced that they have relieved Peter Horachek from his Associate Coach duties with the team:

“Nashville Predators General Manager David Poile announced today that Peter Horachek has been relieved of his associate coaching duties with the club. The club also indicated an assistant coach will be added to the coaching staff in the near future.
“We thank Peter for his contributions to our organization during his time here. He has been a dedicated coach who brought passion to his role each and every day. We wish Peter the very best in his future endeavors and made this difficult decision at this time to allow him to pursue other opportunities.”
The club will have no further comment at this time.”
With him being let go, I expect the team to fill his spot very quickly (as mentioned in the release). What next for Horachek, though? Don’t be surprised for him to get a look at by the Dallas Stars.
We’ll have ...

REPORT: Preds fire Associate Coach Peter Horachek

According to TSN panelist, former NHL goaltender and St. Louis Blues color man Darren Pang, the Nashville Predators have fired Associate Coach Peter Horachek.
Until today, original assistant Paul Gardner held the distinction of being the only NHL coach ever fired by the Predators organization.
Pang breaking the news isn’t as random as it may seem. He and Horachek were Saginaw Generals teammates from 1984-1986 so they have some history together.
Horachek was promoted from Assistant to Associate in June of 2011 when Brent Peterson was forced to step down due to Parkinson’s Disease.
The Stoney Creek, Ontario, native had been a member of the Nashville coaching staff since 2003. He had also interviewed for head coaching jobs in both Florida and Dallas in the past few years.
Nashville Scene columnist JR Lind made Horachek a local celebrity of sorts when he started tweeting fictitious (and often gruesome) “inner thoughts” of the Predators coach during his second period intermission intervi...

Preds fire Assistant Coach Peter Horachek

NHL reporter Darren Peng broke news on Twitter this evening that the Nashville Predators have fired Assistant Coach Peter Horachek. The coach had been with the organization since 2003 and was with the AHL affiliate in Milwaukee before that. Prior to the Preds organization, Horachek was director of hockey operations of the Nashville Knights. Before coaching, Horachek also played hockey and was captain of the Saginaw Genirals.

Horachek and Trotz have been behind the bench for a while which makes this a very interesting decision for the head coach. Traditionally it is the head coach that manages the firings of other coaching staff and unless revealed otherwise it is safe to assume that that is the case tonight.

A shake up behind the bench might be in the Preds best interests. After a lackluster season that proved offensively frustrating throughout. In searching a replacement, the coaching staff and hockey operations management could seek a offensively minded assistant...

Josi wins silver and MVP honors, Smith takes home bronze…

As horrible as the 2013 campaign was for the Nashville Predators, since their season ended, things haven’t really been all that bad. On April 29, the Preds retained the fourth pick of the NHL Draft by way of the Colorado Avalanche winning the Draft Lottery, they locked up Patric Hornqvist for five more years and now they have a bronze medalist, a silver medalist and a tournament MVP on their roster.
Craig Smith and Team USA took third at the 2013 World Championships beating Finland 3-2 on Sunday morning. The Predators forward finished the tournament with 14 points (4 goals, 10 assists) in 10 games and was second on the team in scoring and third overall in the tournament.
Roman Josi, coming off of his first season as Shea Weber‘s defensive partner, tallied nine points (4 goals, 5 assists) in 10 games, led Switzerland in scoring, was the top scoring defenseman, won the silver medal and was named the tournament’s MVP. No Swiss player had ever won an award in the World Championship’s 83...

All three Nashville Predators who went to Scandinavia to play for their respective countries were rewarded with a medal Sunday afternoon. A Roman Josi led Switzerland team played an excellent tournament, but fell to one of the host countries, Sweden, 5-1 in the gold medal match.

Meanwhile, Predators forwards Craig Smith and Bobby Butler fell to the Swiss 3-0 in the semifinals, but won their bronze medal match against Finland, another host country in the 2013 IIHF World Championship tournament.

2012-13 Season Report Card: Goaltenders

Getty Images

In hockey, goaltenders are the last resort for their team, the final hope. Nashville Predators goalies Pekka Rinne and Chris Mason were often their team’s last resort and came up big. Too often the players up front were leaving Rinne and Mason out to dry this season.

Pekka Rinne had a wild year. His stats aren’t glowing, except in the shutout category. The Finnish netminder finished first in the NHL with five shutouts, although he still didn’t look like the Pekka Rinne everyone knew.

During the NHL lockout, Rinne elected to play in the KHL for Dynamo Minsk in Belarus’ capital. Rinne suffered an injury to his groin during his time there. After the scare, Rinne stopped playing for Minsk and returned home to Nashville. However, his groin was not the problem for his lack of success this season.

It wasn’t until the final game of the season that Barry Trotz said Rinne was playing through a hip injury throughout most of the season. The 30 year ...

2012-13 Season Report Card: Defense

John Russell/Getty Images

One positive entering the offseason was the strong defense of the Nashville Predators, according to General Manager David Poile. However, I will to disagree. Injuries to Hal Gill and inconsistency from Ryan Ellis and Jon Blum put the Predators behind the eight ball this season on defense.

	Let’s look at the stats.

After signing a mega deal worth $110 million for fourteen seasons, Shea Weber lived up to expectations as captain of the Predators this year. Weber was understandably often frustrated after losing so many games and was quoted as saying, “I can’t go around and babysit every guy.”

Preds' key offseason moves likely to come via trade

Goalie Pekka Rinne's hip surgery and subsequent need of four months' recovery time wasn't the only injury-related news involving the Predators on Thursday.

Center Colin Wilson had a procedure on his left shoulder, similar to the one performed on his right shoulder a few weeks ago. General manager David Poile said the injury was a "subluxation," or dislocation, just like the other. The rehabilitation period for that injury is also four months, meaning Poile expects Wilson to be ready around the start of training camp.

The same was true of Matt Halischuk, who injured his shoulder with about three games left in the regular season.

What does all of this mean as the Predators begin the process of crafting their roster for next season? For starters, it could mean they'll pursue a backup goalie who is capable of playing a No. 1-type role, if necessary in the early part of the season.

Among the potential unrestricted free agents is Mathieu Garon, who is 35 and coming off a two-year deal

Predators goalie Rinne out four months after hip surgery

The Nashville Predators announced on Thursday that goalie Pekka Rinne, one of the teams foundational players, underwent hip surgery on Wednesday and will be sidelined for the next four months. That recovery time ought to have Rinne back and ready for the start of training camp in early September, if all goes according to plan. In 2011 and 2012, Rinne was voted as one of three finalists for the Vezina Trophy, which is voted by the 30 general managers of each NHL team for the best goaltender. This year, Rinnes production dropped off somewhat, as did that of the team. This is a situation we were aware of last year, general manager David Poile told reporters in Nashville, according to video posted on the team's website. This goes to the position hes playing, the wear and tear on the goaltenders and what the current style of play is. This is an operation that many, many players in the NHL have had.Since the invention of light, foam pads along with strong protective masks and chest protectors, goalies have adopte

Predators G Rinne has hip surgery

Predators goalie Pekka Rinne has had arthroscopic surgery on his left hip and will need approximately four months to recover.

General manager David Poile said Thursday that Rinne had surgery Wednesday to correct a situation team officials were aware of last year resulting from the wear and tear from playing goaltender.

Rinne tied for second in the NHL with 43 appearances in the lockout-shortened season, tied for fourth with 42 starts and ranked sixth in minutes played (2,443:46). The 6-foot-5, 204-pound Finn tied for the NHL-lead with five shutouts.

Poile says they hope Rinne is ready by training camp. The general manager says Tim Thomas had the operation and won the Vezina Trophy with the Bruins taking the Stanley Cup the following year.

Preds sign 2012 sixth round pick Marek Mazanec…

In a move that could pave the way for Magnus Hellberg to move to the big club, the Nashville Predators have signed 2012 sixth round pick Marek Mazanec to a two-year entry level deal.
Mazanec backstopped HC Plzeň to the Czech Extraliga Championship this past season.
Hellberg has grown leaps and bounds this season with the AHL’s Milwaukee Admirals. So much so that the brass may have him slotted in as Pekka Rinne‘s back-up next season. A more realistic option for the organization, however, is let 2007 second rounder Jeremy Smith move on (he’s an RFA on July 1), keep Hellberg in Milwaukee as the starter, and have Mazanec back him up.
Either way, things just got interesting between the pipes.

Hornqvist re-signs with Preds for 5 years, 21.25M

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- After missing the playoffs for the first time since 2009, the Nashville Predators began their rebuilding process Tuesday by agreeing to a long-term deal with forward Patric Hornqvist.
Hornqvist signed a five-year, 21.25 million contract to stay in Nashville, where he has spent his five-year NHL career and has emerged as one of the Predators' top offensive weapons.
"I think we have something really good here going," Hornqvist said at a news conference announcing the signing. "Obviously we know we had a bad season this year. I think everybody is going to come back and improve and have a run in the playoffs next year. "
Injuries limited the 26-year-old Hornqvist to four goals and 10 assists in 24 games this season, as the Predators scored a league-low 111 goals. After advancing beyond the first round of the playoffs in 2011 and 2012, Nashville went 16-23-9 this year to finish below .500 for the first time since 2002-03.

Admirals get reinforcements for their playoff run…

The 2013 NHL campaign may be over for the Nashville Predators but six of their prospects still have more hockey to play.
Defenseman Victor Bartley along with forwards Daniel Bang, Taylor Beck, Kevin Henderson, Chris Mueller and Joonas Rask will resume their seasons with the Milwaukee Admirals, Nashville’s AHL affiliate.
The Ads made the playoffs on the final day of the regular season and are playing the Texas Stars in a best-of-five first round series. The two teams are currently tied 1-1 with game three coming Wednesday in Cedar Park, Texas.
Jim Diamond of The Examiner is reporting that Filip Forsberg will not join the Admirals because he is headed back to his native Sweden in order to — wait for it — finish high school.
Bartley led all Milwaukee defensemen in scoring when he was recalled by the Predators on March 6 and Beck was the team’s leading scorer in 2012-13, despite playing for the big club since March 19.
