Legace joins old friends, new teammates

They were once teammates on the Detroit Red Wings -- Manny Legace, Aaron Ward and Ray Whitney. Now they've been reunited again with the Hurricanes.

Legace and Ward have known each other since their days in junior hockey in Canada. Whitney has been both teammate and pesky foe. And Legace, with a laugh, said he has known the Canes' Scott Walker "since he was a defenseman."

A crisis situation has put them in the same room again: Cam Ward's leg laceration that will s...

With Ward out, 'Canes sign vet Legace for 1 year

The Carolina Hurricanes are turning to veteran goalie Manny Legace to help replace the injured Cam Ward.

The Hurricanes on Monday signed Legace to a one-year contract that will pay him $500,000 at the NHL level or $105,000 if he is sent to the minors.

The 36-year-old has a career NHL record of 177-92-36 and was 2-2 with a 3.21 goals-against average this season with the AHL's Chicago Wolves

Carolina was searching for help in net because Ward will be out for up to four weeks.

The Legace signing: What does it mean?

Carolina's emergency signing of Manny Legace to fill in while Cam Ward is out is interesting on a number of levels.

Sure, it's easy to look at a goalie who couldn't make Atlanta's roster and scoff, but he's also a veteran with tons of experience. The Hurricanes need a stable hand at this point as much as they need a quick one. Legace should be able to provide that, at the least.

Most notably, it's an indication that the Hurricanes aren't completely cert...

As expected, the Hurricanes have signed a goaltender and it is veteran Manny Legace.

Best guess: Canes could turn to Legace

So what's the Canes' next move? Cam Ward will be out at least three to four weeks, general manager Jim Rutherford says, so a goaltending decision must be made.

The best guess here is that the Hurricanes will sign a goaltender and that it will be Manny Legace. He's 36, he's experienced and he played well against the Canes in a preseason exhibition game during a tryout with the Atlanta Thrashers.

Blues place D Jackman on IR with sprained ankle

St. Louis Blues defenseman Barret Jackman has been placed on injured reserve with a sprained left ankle.

The move came Friday, a day after he was hurt in the home-opening 4-2 loss to Atlanta. Jackman has three assists and four penalty minutes in three games.

It likely means rookie Alex Pietrangelo will get his first start of the season on Saturday against the Kings. Pietrangelo was among the healthy scratches the first three games.

The Blues also assigned left wing D.J.
