Calgary Flames First Round Draft Targets – Pick #6

By: Christian Roatis (@CRoatis)
In the next few weeks I’ll break down 5 potential draft targets for the Calgary Flames at each of the 3 spots they draft.
Calgary Pick #6:
Options:
Pos. - Name – Team – League – Height – Weight (Ranked in order of desirability)
C Aleksander Barkov, Tappara, SM-liiga, 6’2, 205lbs
C Elias Lindholm, Brynas, Elitserien, 6’0, 185lbs
RW Valeri Nichushkin, Traktor Chelyabinsk, KHL, 6’3, 175lbs
C Sean Monahan, Ottawa, OHL, 6’2, 195lbs
D Darnell Nurse, Sault Ste. Marie, OHL, 6’5, 190lbs
Aleksander Barkov:
The chances of Barkov still being available at six is highly, if not extremely unlikely. He’s an elite blend of speed and skill all packaged into an NHL ready frame. He thinks the game at a world-class level and never neglects his defensive responsibilities. Described by many scouts as one of the greatest prospects to come out of Finland, Barkov played his entire draft eligible year in Finland’s top men’s league, the SM-Liiga

The Calgary Flames have been slowing trying to acquire newer and younger talent for their roster over the last couple of seasons without giving up too much. Although they continue to attempt to add to their roster, they have recently lost depth at center in Roman Cervenka.

The Flames brought in sought after forward Cervenka from the KHL after displaying a co...

After a disappointed season, the Calgary Flames ended their season not strong enough to make the playoffs and not weak enough for a potential top 5 draft selection.

They made headlines for losing streaks and trading their best player, and despite a year of frustration, the Flames are still optimistic moving forward with the youth they have in their cupboards...

The Calgary Flames lost 4-3 last night in Nashville against the Predators.

Though there is still a certain level of competitiveness throughout the rookie bunch, losses also seem to be welcomed at this point from fans; Calgary is trending negatively in terms of drafting position.
Edmonton Oil Kings Fall 5-2 to Calgary Hitmen

The NHL season is not yet over, but it is for the Calgary Flames. If you needed any confirmation of that fact, you need only take a look at centre ice in the Calgary Saddledome. The Flames logo has already been replaced by the Calgary Hitmen’s dark mask icon. And why not? These are important games, especially since the games played are against the Edmonton Oil Kings, last year’s WHL champions. Still the ice is certainly a statement about NHL hockey in Alberta, both teams are in need of some serious changes and improvement to match up to the success of the WHL franchises.
Miikka Kiprusoff gives up center ice goal vs Red Wings (Video)

Calgary Flames goalie Miikka Kiprusoff gave up a brutal goal to Detroit Red Wings defenseman Johan Franzen late in Wednesday night's game at the Scotiabank Saddledome. Franzen's shot from center ice took a short hop and bounced through Kiprusoff's pads into the net.

Fortunately, the goal wasn't enough to rally the Red Wings from behind, as the Flames were able to hold on for a 3-2 victory.

Johan Franzen scores from center ice on Miika Kiprusoff

The Detroit Red Wings are in danger of missing the NHL Playoffs for the first time since the 1989-1990 season. Losing 3-1 to the Calgary Flames, the Red Wings were in need of a break and with 2:42 left in the third period they got one. Johan Franzen dumped a weak backhand shot in from center ice and it skipped just far enough in front of Flames goalie Miika Kiprusoff that he couldn’t react in time and it went through his five hole. Unfortunately for the Red Wings, they went on to lose the game 3-2 and are out of the final playoff spot by two points. Aside from the one bad goal, Kiprusoff was amazing in net and put up 36 saves. The Wings have five games left on the schedule and will need to get it together quickly if they want to keep the streak alive.
Flames Told Bruins They Had ‘Won the Jarome Iginla Sweepstakes,’ But Winger Chose Penguins Over B’s

For about five hours on Wednesday, Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli believed he had just landed the most-coveted player on the trade market, Jarome Iginla.
At around 12 p.m. ET on Wednesday, as the B’s were preparing for the Canadiens at TD Garden in Boston, Chiarelli was told by Flames GM Jay Feaster that he had “won the Jarome Iginla sweepstakes.”
Chiarelli, who told the media on Thursday that he was not given permission to speak with Iginla throughout this ordeal, then became skeptical when things “went silent” around and after 5 p.m. ET.
“We were told at noon yesterday that we’d won the Jarome Iginla sweepstakes. We believed that we’d had a deal,” he told the media on Thursday. ”We brought up Torey [Krug], scratched [Alexander Khokhlachev] and [Matt Bartkowski] – we relied on the fact that we had the deal.”
By midnight, Chiarelli had received a call from Feaster, explaining that the longtime Flames forward had chosen the Penguins over the Bruins.
Chiarelli confirmed th

The cavalry arrives: Jarome Iginla traded to the Boston Bruins

Sure, Wednesday night’s game sucked. It sucked a lot. The Boston Bruins are officially currently the third best team in the Eastern Conference and no amount of talk about “games in hand” or the hot start can change that fact. This team had issues, notably with depth scoring and defense. Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli fixed one of those issues late Wednesday night/early Thursday morning as he landed the big name in the 2013 NHL trade season. Word has come across that the Boston Bruins have landed future hall-of-fame forward Jarome Iginla from the Calgary Flames in a trade that can only be called robbery for a player of Iginla’s caliber. To the Flames goes high-level prospect Alexander Khokhlachev, middling AHL defenseman Matt Bartowski and a conditional first round draft pick, one that happens if Iginla decides to resign with the Boston Bruins at seasons end. For a future hall-of-fame inductee, its a trade made 100 times out of 100, even if Iginla is just a rental.

Report: Iginla traded to Bruins

BOSTON — A Bruins fan stood in front of the TD Garden sign outside the club’s home rink on Wednesday night wearing a Calgary Flames jersey with the No. 12 and name “Iginla” on the back. He also held a sign up that simply read “Free Iggy.” That fan apparently got his wish a few hours later. According to TSN reporter and former NHL defenseman Aaron Ward, the Bruins bolstered their lineup when they added six-time All-Star Jarome Iginla in a trade with the Calgary Flames. It’s still not official what the Bruins are going to be giving up, but there seems to be a growing consensus as to what it might be. According to reports, the B’s will send defenseman Matt Bartkowski, forward prospect Alex Khokhlachev and a conditional first-round pick to the Flames. According to TSN’s Bob McKenzie, the draft pick is conditional on whether or not Iginla re-signs with Boston. He’s set to become a free agent after the season.
Flames captain Iginla on the move?

The Calgary Flames scratched Jarome Iginla from their lineup Wednesday night against Colorado amid trade speculation surrounding the longtime captain.

The 35-year-old Iginla, in his 16th season with the Flames, is in the final year of his contract. Calgary is 14th in the Western Conference and will likely miss the playoffs for the fourth straight season.

Iginla missed a game for the first time since April 7, 2007, ending his consecutive games streak at 441. He has nine goals and 13 assists in 31 games this season. In 1,219 career regular-season games, he has 525 goals and 570 assists.

Report: Bruins Among Four Teams Having ‘Ongoing Discussions’ About Jarome Iginla With Calgary Flames

Everybody seems to want Jarome Iginla at this year’s NHL trade deadline, and that competition will only heat up as the April 3 trade deadline nears. While no front runner for the forward’s services has emerged, it appears that a quartet of teams is staying involved with the Calgary Flames. The Bruins are one of those four teams, according to TSN’s Darren Dreger. As Dreger sees it, Boston, Pittsburgh, Los Angeles and Chicago are four teams having “ongoing conversations” with Calgary. Iginla, 35, is having another strong season for the struggling Flames. Through 29 games, he has eight goals and 13 assists, with those 21 point totals the third most on the squad. Over the course of a 15-year NHL career, the right winger has compiled 524 goals and 570 assists.

Cody Eakin’s Hit on Matt Stajan ‘One of the Dirtiest Hits’ Bob Hartley Has Ever Seen (Video)

A head coach will stick up for his player 999 times out of 1,000, but Flames head coach Bob Hartley might want to watch game film before making crazy accusations.
On Monday night, Cody Eakin caught Matt Stajan with his head down in the neutral zone — kind of. At first glance, the hit looked pretty dirty, but as Yahoo! Sports’ Puck Daddy points out, maybe it’s worth a second look before anyone starts tossing suspension talk around.
At least one guy — Hartley — wasn’t happy with the hit, to say the least.
“I remember when they instituted the five minute [penalty] for interference. That’s a classic case,” Hartley told the Dallas Morning News after the game. “That’s one of the dirtiest hits that I’ve seen…Those hits can end careers.”
Check out the hit below. Not only did Stajan fail miss a shift, it looks like he put a little pizzazz into the fall, no? You be the judge.

Fan in skivvies jumps on ice during Flames game

During the second intermission of Wednesday night's Calgary Flames game at the Scotiabank Saddledome against the San Jose Sharks, a fan stripped down to his briefs and jumped over the glass onto the ice. The fan made it all the way to center ice before being apprehended by security. We've seen fans run onto the field at sporting events many times, but it's extremely rare that we see a hockey fan jump over the glass onto the ice, and we've never seen it during an NHL game. The fan has to know that not only does he have no chance of getting away from security, but he's risking injury trying to walk around the ice without skates. Was it worth it? Interestingly enough, the game was tied 1-1 at the time of the stunt, but the Flames came out of the locker room and scored three goals in the third period for a 4-1 victory. Coincidence? Yes, probably. DISCLAIMER: Holdout Sports does not condone this type of behavior. H/T Puck Daddy. Visit us at holdoutsports.com and follow us on Twitter
