McDermott decides to stay at Creighton for senior season

Creighton mens basketball head coach Greg McDermott can breathe a little easier knowing his son will be by his side when the Bluejays transition to the new-look Big East next season.

McDermott went to Twitter to announce his intentions of coming back next season rather than entering the NBA Draft.

I will be returning to Creighton for my senior year and can't wait to put on that uniform for one more season! Doug McDermott (@dougmcd3) April 25, 2013

This is where my hearts at, Doug McDermott said at a press conference. The NBA can wait. I feel like I can play there some day, but I feel like this is too good an opportunity to pass up.

The All-American junior forward is coming off a season in which he torched the nets for 23.2 points per game to go along with 7.7 rebounds. In three seasons at Creighton, the 6-foot-8 hybrid forward has poured in 2,216 career points.

The Bluejays swept the Missouri Valley regular-season and tournament titles in their last year in the conference with McDermott taking hom

Doug McDermott Opts To Return For Senior Season At Creighton

Doug McDermott will return to Creighton for his senior season.
McDermott explored the option of departing early for the NBA draft, but ultimately decided that returning to school was in his best interests.
Based on evaluations he received from the draft advisory committee, McDermott said, “There was no doubt in my mind that I would have been a first-round pick.''
McDermott's father, Creighton coach Greg McDermott, recommended his son go pro.
“He knew my dream is to play in the NBA, and he just felt that this was too good of an opportunity to pass up,'' Doug said. “But the way I look at it, if I can play in the NBA, I can play there the next year just as well as I can next year.
“I feel there are things I can work on. I feel I can still improve my draft stock by playing in the Big East. There are a lot of areas that I can get better at, and I just felt I'd be more comfortable doing it here in Omaha.''

McDermott staying in school

Doug McDermott says he's confident he's got what it takes to be a first-round pick in the NBA draft.

He'll wait until 2014 to find out for sure.

The two-time first-team All-American said Thursday that he'll return to Creighton for his senior year instead of declaring for June's NBA draft.

McDermott made the announcement at a news conference in Creighton's practice gym. He was joined by his father, Bluejays coach Greg McDermott, and mom, Theresa, in addition to teammates, administrators and boosters.

McDermott said he went back and forth with his decision before it hit him Wednesday afternoon. He was meeting with his dad to talk about his pro prospects when he abruptly stopped the conversation.

''Finally, I just said, 'You know what, I'm coming back,'" McDermott said. ''I've had enough of this. I'm ready to make this decision. This is where my heart is. The NBA can wait. I feel like I can play there someday, but this is an opportunity I can&

Creighton's Doug McDermott set to announce plans

All-America forward Doug McDermott of Creighton has scheduled a Thursday afternoon news conference to announce whether he'll return to school or skip his senior season and declare for the NBA draft.

McDermott was the second-leading scorer in Division I last season, averaging 23.2 points.

Sunday is the deadline for underclassmen to enter the draft.

The son of Creighton coach Greg McDermott led the Bluejays to a sweep of the Missouri Valley regular-season and tournament titles in their last year in the conference. They'll move to the Big East next season.

NBA draft analysts peg Doug McDermott as a late first-round or early second-round pick. An Associated Press first-team All-American as a sophomore and junior, he was the MVC player of the year and Valley tournament MVP this past season.

Duke needs to slow down McDermott to advance

Duke will never be a first-weekend tournament darling. There's no such thing as an upset - unless the Blue Devils are beat.

The second-seeded Blue Devils (28-5) will try to avoid a second-straight early exit when they play seventh-seeded Creighton (28-7) on Sunday in the Midwest Regional.

The Blue Devils haven't advanced past the round of 16 since coach Mike Krzyzewksi won his fourth national championship in 2010.

The Bluejays haven't advanced to a regional semifinal since the tournament expanded to 64 teams in 1985, but for the second straight season they are a victory away from getting there.

Last year North Carolina stopped them. Now, another ACC team looks to send All-American Doug McDermott and Co. home early.

UC to play Creighton in NCAA tournament

University of Cincinnati will play Creighton in the second round of the NCAA tournament Friday in Philadelphia.

The Bearcats are the 10th seed in the Midwest region after going 22-11 this season. It is the third consecutive NCAA bid for UC. The Bearcats finished 9-9 in the Big East and beat Providence in the second round of the conference tournament before losing to Georgetown in the quarterfinals. UC reached the NCAA Sweet 16 last season by beating Texas and Florida State as a sixth seed.

Creighton (27-7) earned the No. 7 seed after winning the Missouri Valley Conference regular season and tournament titles. Junior forward Doug McDermott averages 23.4 points and 7.6 rebounds to lead the Blue Jays. This is the second straight year in the tournament for Creighton, which beat Alabama in the second round last year before losing to North Carolina.

The winner will face either second-seeded Duke or No. 15 Albany in a third-round game on Sunday.

MVC fan hits half-court shot -- but misses 50K

ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- Believe it or not, the biggest shot of the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament championship Sunday didn't come from the hands of Jahenns Manigat or Doug McDermott.

That honor belonged to Alex Permann.

Permann, 24, a South Dakota native and a student at the University of Missouri-St. Louis, drained a half-court shot as part of a pregame promotion, sending the crowd of 16,659 at Scottrade Center into a frenzy before the game between Creighton and Wichita State had even started.

One problem: He didn't hit a 3-pointer first.

As part of a long-standing Valley promotion, a fan -- Permann, in this case -- attempts to hit a layup, a free throw, a 3-pointer, and a half-court shot within 24 seconds. Nail all four, and you take home 50,000.

Permann got the first two, then ran to half-court and let it fly. There were two seconds left on the clock when the prayer was answered, and optometry student thought he'd won the big one. And he was visibly disappointed afterward -- so was the cr

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Doug McDermott became the leading scorer in Creighton history and had five points during a pivotal 15-2 run as top-seeded Creighton defeated Drake, 65-53, on Friday afternoon in the first quarterfinal of the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament.

Creighton improved to 25-7 on the season and advances to play Saturday in a 1:35 pm semifinal against the winner of the Evansville-Indiana State semifinal. Drake, which defeated Bradley in the play-in round just 18 hours earlier, fell to 15-17.

Creighton broke open a 12-all game with some strong play by Will Artino to key a 7-0 run. The sophomore center from Iowa came off the bench and dunked to start a traditional three-point play. McDermott would follow with a jumper to tie the scoring record, and Artino answered with another bucket to make it 19-12 with 11:43 left in the first half.

McDermott's history-making point came at the foul line, when he sank a free throw with 4:43 left in the first half. It gave him 2

OMAHA, Neb. -- Josh Jones is hanging up his high tops for good. The senior guard on the Creighton mens basketball team has announced that his basketball career is over, the result of an atrial flutter discovered after the Omaha native fainted prior to warm-ups at Nebraska on Dec. 6th.

Jones underwent nine hours of testing on Dec. 18th, but in the end, the risk of continuing to play basketball was too much.

Jones was Creightons top guard off the bench each of the past two years, averaging 7.0 points per game. He played in 108 games, including 14 starts, with the Bluejays, collecting 538 points, 151 rebounds, 131 assists and 67 steals.

He tweeted the following last night: "Today I would like to announce my early retirement 4rm my collegiate athletic career, and potentially further basketball aspirations.
Top 10 players: Mid-Majors

Doug McDermott PF Creighton- 22.9pts. 8.2reb. McDermott dominated the Missouri Valley Conference last year, but will need to add some quickness if he’s going to be successful at the next level. His tremendous feel for the game is his best attribute, and he’s just starting to realize his potential.
Mike Moser PF UNLV- 14.0pts. 10.5reb. Moser is a big, physical presence on both ends of the floor. He uses his massive shoulders to drive to the basket and either score in the paint or draw a fowl. UNLV has a lot of talent, but it all starts with Moser.
Isaiah Canaan PG Murray State- 19.0pts. 5.3ast. Cannon became a household name last year when he lead Murray State to the tournament. He’s explosive, as well as a terrific shooter. His height limits his upside at the next level, but he could average over 25 points this year.
Jamaal Franklin SG San Diego State- 17.4pts. 7.9reb. Franklin can stretch a defense with his jump shot, and hurt them on the fast-break. He and Chase Tapely com...

Creighton bus driver has heart attack

All day long, the North Carolina-Creighton game was set for 5:10pm ET. Then, all of the sudden, it was pushed back twenty minutes later. Usually tip times fluctuate due to when other games are ending but this wasn't one of those times. There were only two games scheduled in the Greensboro Coliseum today and the Xavier-Lehigh game was scheduled after the Heels-Jays game. The reason for the delay was that the Creighton bus driver suffered a heart attack en route to the arena.About 10 minutes into the trip from the hotel to the arena, Creighton head coach Greg McDermott noticed the driver getting sick. The driver, Bill Burrus, pulled the bus over and then slumped onto the steering wheel.
Creighton's team doctor, Doug Ramos, and his wife, Tammy, also a physician, were traveling in a SUV behind the bus. They, along with Mary Jo Merfeld, a cardiac nurse and the wife of Creighton assistant coach Steve Merfeld, managed to get Burrus out of the bus. They provided care until emergency service personnel arrived a
