Mulkey-Griner case not black, white

A storm of disapproving voices has descended on Baylor University the past few days, after star basketball player (and recent Baylor graduate) Brittney Griner said in an interview that her coach advised players to avoid being publicly open about their sexuality because of how it would impact the women's basketball program.

If there is one central theme to these voices, it's the oversimplified belief that Griner's coach, Kim Mulkey, ought not direct players like Griner, who are lesbians, to remain in the closet while attending the private Baptist university.

The university lays out a pretty black-and-white view on sexuality in its student handbook: "Christian churches across the ages and around the world have affirmed purity in singleness and fidelity in marriage between a man and a woman as the biblical norm. Temptations to deviate from this norm include both heterosexual sex outside of marriage and homosexual behavior. It is thus expected that Baylor students will not participate in advoca

BYU 79, Southern Miss. 62

Tyler Haws scored 25 points, Brock Zylstra added 23 and BYU cruised to a 79-62 victory over Southern Mississippi in the NIT quarterfinals on Wednesday night.

BYU (24-11) went on an 11-0 run early in the first half and never trailed again, leading by double digits the entire second half. Zylstra drilled five 3-pointers in the first half and the Cougars shot 11 of 27 (40.7 percent) from long range.

Brandon Davies added 12 points and 13 rebounds.

Southern Miss (27-10) lost at home for just the second time in two seasons. Daveon Boardingham led the Golden Eagles with 18 points and Jerrold Brooks added 13.

The Cougars will next face either Providence or Baylor in the semifinals of the NIT at Madison Square Garden in New York.

Video: Craig Cusick hits buzzer-beater just hours after learning dad has cancer

Earlier in the day on Tuesday, BYU Cougars guard Craig Cusick received troubling news, that his father was diagnosed with cancer. While Cusick is probably still dealing with the situation internally, he didn’t let it keep him from competing Tuesday night in a game against Utah State. Cusick even found a momentary reprieve when he came up with a last second shot: “As a player, you couldn’t dream it any better,” Cusick told the Deseret News. “I was just fortunate. … I saw that when Matt shot it there was a chance it would be a little bit short. I ran to where I thought it was going to come off and I was fortunate.” Good for him. Nice escape from something that could easily stifle most of us. We extend our thoughts to him and his family, especially to his father as they go through this difficult time.

Matthew Dellavedova Outshines Tyler Haws’ Go-Ahead Basket With Game-Winning Buzzer-Beater (Video)

Who needs the Pac-12?
The excitement on Wednesday night came courtesy of the Mountain West and West Coast Conferences. UNLV earned a 82-75 road victory over No. 15 San Diego State and the entertainment only got better as the night went on.
Just after 1 a.m. ET, BYU and St. Mary’s each hit late-game shots in a wild final three seconds.
BYU’s leading scorer, Tyler Haws, connected on a floater in the lane with three seconds remaining. St. Mary’s quickly got the ball up the floor on the inbound pass and Matthew Dellavedova heaved a 35-footer and silenced the Marriott Center crowd with the buzzer beating 3-pointer. With the 70-69 win, the Gaels moved to 14-4 (3-1 WCC), while the Cougars dropped to 14-5 (4-1 WCC).
Check out the thrilling three seconds in the video below.

BYU beats St. Mary's on 3-point buzzer-beater

Men’s college hoops saw a nail biter that came down to the wire when BYU hosted St. Mary’s Wednesday night. After BYU hit a shot in the final seconds to take a 69-67 lead over St. Mary’s, the BYU faithful thought they had the game won. But with just 2.5 seconds left on the clock, St. Mary’s guard Matthew Dellavedova quickly drove the court and threw up a running three-pointer from just inside the half court line for the game-winner. He drained it, giving St. Mary’s the one point, 70-69 victory. Article found on: Cosby Sweaters

Tyler Haws and the mid-range game

Three years ago Tyler Haws was a freshman guard starting alongside Jimmer Fredette. He impressed by averaging over 11 per game and making 37% of his 3s. But then he went to the Philippines on his mission for two years. It’s always tough to predict how players who have left the game will respond.

Well, Haws hasn’t exactly been causing Dave Rose to miss sleep. The kid can ball.

Haws plays more minutes than any other BYU player, and when he’s on the floor he takes 30% of their shots which is more than every WCC player besides Kevin Foster and Anthony Ireland. The difference between Haws and the other two is that he’s really really efficient with the ball. His turnover% is the 5th lowest in the conference, and he makes 51% of his 2s, 42% of his 3s and 92% of his free throws.

While he’s an excellent 3-point shooter, that’s not necessarily his game. 77% of his shots are 2s, and that’s where he causes so much trouble for opponents. Defenses don't get much experience defend...

Former BYU G Harrison cleared to play at Clemson

Former BYU guard Damarcus Harrison was granted an NCAA waiver to play basketball at Clemson this fall.

The school said it was told of the NCAA's decision Wednesday night. Without the waiver, Harrison would've had to sit out this year before playing for Clemson.

Harrison is from Greenwood and played one season at BYU. He chose to transfer after learning his planned Mormon mission had been delayed and the Cougars didn't have a scholarship for him to play there this season.

The 6-foot-4 Harrison averaged 3.2 points as a freshman for BYU. Clemson coach Brad Brownell said he was happy with the NCAA's decision and Harrison will provide depth in the Tigers backcourt.

BYU's Collinsworth says ankle surgery ends career

Brigham Young sophomore forward Chris Collinsworth will have career-ending microfracture ankle surgery.

Basketball coach Dave Rose announced the news in a statement issued by the school Monday.

Collinsworth said it was time to move on, considering this is the third straight year he has had surgery.

Collinsworth's BYU career began in 2007-08 when he played 35 games and started six before serving a two-year church mission in Australia. That season he averaged 4.8 rebounds and 3.2 points for a Cougar team that won 27 games and reached the NCAA tournament.

BYU basketball: Noah Hartsock, Brandon Davies, Matt Carlino earn WCC honors

Provo After finishing in third place in their inaugural season in the West Coast Conference, the BYU Cougars were well represented Tuesday when the league handed out its annual postseason honors.

Senior forward Noah Hartsock and junior forward Brandon Davies made the 10-member All-WCC First Team, while freshman guard Matt Carlino made the five-member All-Freshman Team and was also named all-conference honorable mention.

Junior guard Matthew Dellavedova of league champion Saint Mary's is the WCC Player of the Year. Gonzaga's Rob Sacre is the Defensive Player of the Year -- an honor that easily could have gone to BYU's Hartsock or Davies -- and Gonzaga guard Kevin Pangos is the Newcomer of the Year.

Max Good of Loyola Marymount is the WCC Coach of the Year.

All four major awards, along with the All-WCC Team and All-Freshman Team, were voted on by the league's nine head coaches.

Â

Postseason problems

Two years ago, freshman guard Tyler Haws suffered a fractured orbital bone injury at the Mountain West Conference tournament that caused him to miss a semifinal against UNLV. Last year, Davies was booted off the team for an honor code violation with two games remaining in the regular season.

And this year, leading scorer Hartsock is battling knee, ankle and calf injuries in his left leg.

The Cougars have had their share of mishaps when March Madness rolls around.

Junior guard Brock Zyl-stra called it a "big blow" to BYU's postseason hopes, but added: "We're a tough team. We will fight through it and we got tough guys on our team who are going to play through injuries. We just want to win. I think everybody on the team just wants to win, and they will do anything they can so that we can accomplish that goal."

BYU routs Northern Arizona 87-52

Brock Zylstra had 23 points, Brandon Davies added 14 and Brigham Young ran over Northern Arizona in the first half for an 87-52 win Wednesday night.

BYU (5-2) took control with an early 15-0 run and never gave Northern Arizona much of a chance after that, hounding the Lumberjacks into one mistake after another at cozy Tim's Toyota Center.

Noah Hartsock had 11 points and the Cougars made 10 3-pointers while shooting 51 percent overall. Zylstra was 5 of 6 from the arc.

Northern Arizona (2-5) took an early lead, but didn't do much right after that in its second straight lopsided loss.

The young Lumberjacks had 16 of their 24 turnovers in the first half to fall behind by 23 and had numerous defensive breakdowns throughout the game.

Colin Gruber had 13 points to lead NAU.

Jimmer Fredette's dog Halloween costume

I don’t know of too many people who considered Jimmer Fredette to be a dude before this atrocity, but whatever bro points he may have had are now gone. We already had a pretty good idea that Jimmer was whipped by his girl, Whitney Wonnacott, but now it’s official. Jimmer’s girl literally has him on [...]

Davies glad to be back on court for BYU

BYU's Brandon Davies feels like a changed man after a six-month suspension that ended his last season and left him as a spectator while the Cougars made a run to the round of 16 in the NCAA tournament.

''Honestly, I think I'm a totally different person,'' Davies said Tuesday. ''It hurt. Not just me, but everyone around me. It's definitely something I'll never forget about and something I never want to do again, so I just use that to drive me in all that I do today.''

Davies was suspended in March because of violations of the school's honor code. The school does not discuss the nature of suspensions but under the honor code students are prohibited from having premarital sex and drinking alcoholic beverages, among other things.

Davies, who grew up in Provo, had started 26 of 29 games for the Cougars and averaged 11.1 points and a team-leading 6.2 rebounds prior to his suspension. He was reinstated earlier this year and spoke to the media for the first time on Tuesday.

''I'm just happy to be back,'' said Davies, whose Cougars open the season on Friday against Utah State. ''It doesn't matter what I had to go through to get here. I'm just glad to be here, back with my teammates. Back here, where I'm supported and loved by so many.''

The junior center told head coach Dave Rose earlier this week that he was ready to address the media.

''It was probably one of the most difficult situations for one of our players to have to go through since I've been here,'' Rose said of Davies' suspension. ''He came up to me and said coach I want to do this ... and get ready for the game on Friday.''

Davies is now focused on the season that lies ahead. BYU will need him to play a big role as one of three returning starters this season. The team lost national player of the year Jimmer Fredette and BYU all-time steals leader Jackson Emery.

Davies was not approached by any other schools during his suspension and made it clear that he always wanted to return to play at BYU. Davies said he feels he was treated fairly by BYU.

''I was definitely treated more than fair,'' Davies said. ''Just to be able to make it back here and to be able to be a part of this team again is a blessing to me.''
