Franklin to leave SDSU early for draft

San Diego State guard Jamaal Franklin is skipping his senior season to enter the NBA draft.

Franklin led the Aztecs in scoring and rebounding the last two years and helped them to three straight NCAA appearances and the first three NCAA tournament victories in school history.

He was the Mountain West Conference Player of the Year as a sophomore.

Franklin hopes to become the Aztecs' second NBA draft pick in the last three years, following former teammate Kawhi Leonard, who left after his sophomore season and now plays for the San Antonio Spurs.

The NBA draft is June 27.

Aztecs can't run with FGCU, lose in NCAAs 81-71

San Diego State knows what Georgetown felt like.

The Aztecs, like the Hoyas two nights earlier, could only watch Florida Gulf Coast celebrate an upset win at the NCAA tournament. This was an historic one - the 81-71 victory made the Eagles the first No. 15 seed to reach the NCAA tournament's round of 16.

And just like in FGCU's win over second-seeded Georgetown, it was a big second-half run that sent the Eagles on their way to some postgame dancing.

In its first-ever NCAA tournament game on Friday, the Atlantic Sun champion busted brackets everywhere by taking control with a 21-2 run in the second half.

It went much the same way against seventh-seeded San Diego State.

This time the run was 17-0 and Sherwood Brown, who was saddled early in the second half with foul trouble, had eight of the first 10 points of it. When it was over the Eagles led 71-52 with 4:19 to play and the only decisions left were how the players and fans were going to celebrate.

''They're a good basketball team. T

San Diego State outlasts Oklahoma

San Diego State traveled 2,732 miles to play in the NCAA tournament. The Aztecs surely didn't mind delaying their return trip home.

Jamaal Franklin scored 21 points, James Rahon had 17 and San Diego State beat Oklahoma 70-55 on Friday night to earn its third NCAA tournament victory.

The seventh-seeded Aztecs (23-10) will play No. 15 seed Florida Gulf Coast on Sunday in the South Regional. The Eagles introduced themselves to the college basketball world with a 78-68 win over Georgetown.

After that thriller, this game never stood a chance.

The Aztecs did nothing spectacular, but everything well and used a modest 8-0 run late in the second half to snap a tie game and take control.

Romero Osby scored 22 points for the 10th-seeded Sooners (20-12).

The Aztecs are in the tournament for the fourth straight season but they had only won games in 2011 when they reached the round of 16.

Built around upperclassman, the Aztecs firmly believed they had a deep run ahead and wanted to send out seniors like Chase Ta

SDSU advances in Mountain West

Jamaal Franklin had 19 points and eight rebounds as San Diego State held off Boise State for a 73-67 victory in the Mountain West tournament quarterfinals on Wednesday night.

Xavier Thames scored 18 points and Chase Tapley 17 for the fourth-seeded Aztecs (22-9), who advanced to Friday's semifinals against No. 1 seed New Mexico.

Anthony Drmic had 20 points and Derrick Marks 14 for the fifth-seeded Broncos (21-10), who figure to be sweating out NCAA tournament selection day on Sunday.

The Aztecs led for much of the game but were unable to put a knockout punch on Boise State, who erased a 13-point second half deficit while San Diego State went scoreless for 3:39. Two free throws by Drmic gave the Broncos their only lead, 50-49, but Franklin quickly responded with a pair from the line and led the Aztecs' charge down the stretch.

Franklin's thunderous transition dunk made the score 66-59 with 43 seconds remaining, as San Diego State did what few teams in the nation do better -- close out a game. Th

San Diego State’s Jamaal Franklin with the dunk of the Year?

Jamaal Franklin was the Mountain West Conference Player of the year last season, and now this season he might just have the best dunk of the college basketball season. The dunk happened it San Diego State’s win at Fresno State.
Franklin got the defensive rebound and started dribbling up court and was on a 3 on 3 fastbreak. Franklin looked off his defender to the right and threw a pass to himself off the backboard near the three point line. He then went up and caught it and threw down the alley oop. You don’t see this often because it is so hard to do with all the traffic but Franklin pulled it off. No doubt this dunk will be one of the best for this college basketball season.

SDSU’s Jamaal Franklin’s incredible off-the-backboard dunk at full speed is magically delicious

Jamaal Franklin has mad ups.

San Diego State guard Jamaal Franklin is the early leader for college basketball’s Dunk of the Year after this amazing dunk against Fresno State Wednesday night. Franklin went full speed through the Fresno State defense and executed the perfect off-the-backboard pass to himself before finishing with the thunderous dunk. It was as ballsy as it was impressive, and something you don’t normally see in basketball outside of a slam dunk contest.
The junior guard finished the night as the game’s leading scorer with 20 points, 18 rebounds and five assists in the No. 16 Aztecs 65-62 win over the Fresno State Bulldogs.

SDSU’s Jamaal Franklin throws down incredible self alley-oop (Video)

San Diego State’s Jamaal Franklin threw down what may be the dunk of the season in college hoops. The junior guard was dribbling up the court on a fastbreak Wednesday at Fresno State. For some reason, Franklin decided to throw the ball off the backboard. He let his pass go from beyond the 3-point line, split two defenders, and then power-jammed home the ball.
It was an absolutely incredible alley-oop.
“That was just me being myself,” Franklin said of the dunk after the game, via the Associated Press. “A lot of players won’t do that, but I’m real thankful my teammates have confidence in me.”
The Aztecs beat Fresno State 65-62 in their conference opener. Franklin had 20 points and a career-high 18 rebounds. He leads the team with 17.4 points and 10.5 rebounds per game.

San Diego State Aztecs drop in AP Poll because of voting error

In this week’s AP college basketball poll, the San Diego State Aztecs (7-1) dropped one spot from 17th to 18th despite going 2-0 during the week. You might be thinking at this point that it’s because they played weak competition, and that’s true. The Aztecs’ two wins came over Texas Southern and UC-Santa Barbara, both double digit wins. Not exactly incredible competition there. However, that’s not why the Aztecs dropped. Instead, their ranking changed because one reporter, Elton Alexander, from the Cleveland Plain Dealer, thought the SDSU Aztecs were the University of San Diego Toreros. Alexander ranked USD in what should have been SDSU’s spot while leaving the Aztecs unranked, causing the drop in the AP poll. Yeah, you read that right. In college basketball, this isn’t a world-ending mistake. The in-season polls aren’t all that important because college basketball has a playoff at the end of the season, one the Aztecs would surely get into based on being a top 25 team regardless o...

San Diego State will be a ‘Show’

Watch a San Diego State Aztecs basketball game and you find one of the most active student sections in the game, poised on the right side of your screen in the Aztecs’ Viejas Arena. The student group is known as “The Show” and probably the only reason that it does not rival Duke’s Cameron Crazies is simply a lack of media attention and the dogmatic thinking of basketball demagogues that the passion for the college game does not exist on the west coast.
San Diego State basketball coach Steve Fisher begs to differ. He took over this struggling program to begin the 1999-2000 season and went 5-23. Two years later, the Aztecs checked in at 21-12 and picked up an NCAA bid, albeit a first round loss. Three years later, the squad re-emerged in 2005-06 and have strung together seven straight 20-win seasons, including a school record 34-3 ledger in 2010-11 that saw SDSU appear in the Sweet 16 and lose to eventual national champion UConn.
