Dana Altman’s All-In Strategy On College Free Agents Is Paying Off For The Oregon Ducks

When former Portland prep star Mike Moser announced earlier this week that he was transferring from UNLV to the University of Oregon for his senior season, it barely moved the curiosity meter.

“Oh good,” Duck fans thought, “he ought to help the team.”

Before Dana Altman showed up in Eugene, UO basketball players arrived in town either toting their high school diplomas or the transcripts saying they did in fact complete their associate’s degree from that juco.

Rarely in those pre-Altman days did a transfer make a lasting impression – with the notable exception of Mr. Ivan Johnson. Anytime a transfer showed up, he brought with him questions about his character. Otherwise he likely wouldn’t have left the school at which he started.

But as the façade of the NCAA caring about academics has continued to fade, players are exploring their freedom more frequently.

Altman seems to spend more time recruiting on college campuses than he does in high school gyms. In his three...

UNLV's Moser transferring to Oregon

Forward Mike Moser says he'll transfer to Oregon for his senior season.

Moser, who went to Portland's Grant High School, averaged 14 points and 10.5 rebounds at UNLV as a sophomore but was hampered by injury as a junior.

The 6-foot-8 forward confirmed his decision via Twitter, saying he's excited to be going home. If Moser completes a final course for his undergraduate degree at UNLV, he'll be eligible to play immediately for Oregon.

Moser can help the Ducks following the departure of Arsalan Kazemi. Oregon finished 28-9 this past season and advanced to the NCAA tournament round of 16 for the first time since 2007.

Mike Moser transferring to UW from UNLV

Mike Moser from UNLV 'likely' transferring to UW

From CBSSports.com we've found out that the 6-foot-8 Moser will graduate this summer and transfer. We have not heard anything yet out of UW.

"It's almost done that he's going to transfer and play at Washington," one source said. Our friends at HuskyHaul tweeted this AM "Mike Moser would be a huge get for Romar. A front court of him and Blackwell could be dominating and extremely athletic."

In 2012/13 injuries and the fact he was unable to play power forward have dropped his draft stock. Most NBA draft guru's had him pegged as a potential 1st round lottery pick for what its worth.

This would be move #3 for Moser, who started at UCLA as a frosh.

UNLV loses 64-61 to Cal for another early exit

Four straight trips to the NCAA tournament, four straight opening-game losses.

While UNLV seems headed in the right direction, it's not all the way back just yet.

Bryce Dejean-Jones scored 15 points and freshman NBA prospect Anthony Bennett shook off a poor start to finish with 15 points and 10 rebounds as the fifth-seeded Runnin' Rebels exited early again, losing 64-61 to No. 12 seed California on Thursday night.

''We're bitterly disappointed,'' second-year coach Dave Rice said.

The Golden Bears (21-11) held the Rebels (25-10) without a basket for more than 11 minutes in the second half. Cal confused UNLV with 40 minutes of zone defense, something coach Mike Montgomery couldn't recall doing since he was at Montana from 1977-86.

The dominant defensive stretch turned a tie game into a nine-point lead. Cal withstood a late UNLV push for its first tournament win since 2010.

The Rebels rallied to within a point in the final seconds before missed free throws and a costly inbou

5 unlikely teams who could run through March Madness

Parity, when participating teams have roughly equivalent levels of talent. In such a league, the “best” team is not significantly better than the “worst” team. This leads to more competitive contests where the winner cannot be easily predicted in advance. This year college basketball is filled with parity and it’s anyone’s ball game come March Madness. Here are five unlikely teams that could run through March Madness.
La Salle Explorers: 16-6, 6-3 (A10)
Led by Ramon Galloway and his 17.1 PPG, the Explorers are looking to erase a 20-year absence from the NCAA tournament and they might just do it. With solid wins over Villanova, Richmond, a ranked VCU team and conference leading Butler, La Salle ranks 34th in RPI. La Salle hadn’t defeated ranked teams consecutively since the 1952 NIT tournament.
They are projected to win five of their last seven games and still have a shot at winning the A10 outright.
“If you think we’re surprised, you’re nuts,” La Salle coach Dr. John Giannini

UNLV’s Marshall a catalyst for upcoming Mountain West slate

UNLV senior guard Anthony Marshall made the ultimate sacrifice for a perimeter player. He moved from a shooting guard to a point guard to give the Runnin’ Rebels the experience they needed on the perimeter with such a young 2012-13 squad. With that, he has taken off as the Rebs are eighth in the nation with 17.8 apg. with Marshall leading the way with 71 assists against only 34 turnovers through their first 14 games and a 12-2 start.
Saturday’s winnable 79-73 loss to North Carolina in Chapel Hill was a learning experience for Dave Rice’s youthful squad. It was also a learning experience for the Rebels as they learned that Marshall’s game and his experience will be a key cog in holding this team together as it enters Mountain West play at New Mexico on January 9.

UNLV’s Mike Moser dislocated his elbow during the first half of Sunday’s game against Ca, and it wasn’t pretty. UNLV’s head coach said that Moser will be out “for some time.” I’ve been lucky enough to never experience a dislocated anything, and after seeing this video I would really like to keep it that way. Oh yeah, and UNLV won 76-75.

UNLV Player Mike Moser Dislocated Elbow Injury Was Ugly (Video)

#21 ranked UNLV beat California yesterday 76-75, but it didn't come without a big loss. UNLV Junior forward Mike Moser dislocated his elbow on a freak play in the first 5 minutes of the game going for a loose ball and never returned. Moser averages 11 points per game and grabs over 8 rebounds per game. UNLV won the game because of their talented trio of ballers Anthony Bennett, Bryce Dejean-Jones and Anthony Marshall who scored nearly 80% of the teams points. Check out the ugly injury in the video below.

Inside the boxscore: UNLV 81, Dixie State 80

1. Division II Dixie State was able to force an overtime game with top-25 UNLV. Yes, this was only an exhibition, but it's still a red flag (albeit, a minor one). Dixie State isn't among the Division II top-25 (they're deep in the "also receiving votes" category) but that will change if they play like they did down the stretch in Vegas. UNLV can chalk this up to rotations and a lack of focus. But that doesn't mean it's okay.

	2. This was a remarkably uptempo (and overtime) 87 possession game. Dixie State turned it over 24 times, which was 28% of their possessions, while UNLV turned the ball over 21 times (24%). The sloppy play led to neither team managing a point per possession. UNLV had the No. 71 offense in the nation last season, averaging a strength adjusted 1.074 points per possession. Against Dixie State they managed a measly 0.93 PPP.

	3. Carlos Lopez-Sosa attempted five shots on the night, and only made one. But his one was in the game&#...

2012-13 NCAA Basketball Preview: UNLV

UNLV comes into this season as one of my favorite teams. Head coach Dave Rice stepped in his first year last season and led the Runnin’ Rebels to a 26-9 record and a birth to the NCAA Tournament. What he also did his first year, was my favorite part of all. He sped the game up. I love up-tempo teams that can get up and down the floor in less than five seconds. They’re the most fun to watch, and provide the most action in the smallest amount of time.… Read more
