Wild goalie Backstrom has sports hernia surgery

Minnesota Wild goalie Niklas Backstrom has undergone sports hernia surgery.

The team announced that Backstrom's operation went as planned on Thursday morning in Philadelphia. The procedure was done by Dr. William Meyers.

The 35-year-old Backstrom aggravated the injury while warming up before Minnesota's first game of the Western Conference quarterfinal series at Chicago on April 30. Josh Harding was sent in to replace him, and Backstrom was unable to play the rest of the series.

The Wild have said Backstrom is expected to be fully recovered for the start of next season. Whether he's still in the net for them is another matter. Backstrom will become an unrestricted free agent in July. He has played all seven of his NHL seasons with the Wild.

Brad Ratgen: The "Better Late Than Never" Season Ending Blog - Minnesota Wild

From the “better late than neverâ€* side of life, here is my season ending blog regarding the Minnesota Wild.

On the positive side of life, the Wild made it back to the playoffs. Barely. But, they made it in. Hindsight being 20-20, the more interesting stories would have resulted from the Wild not making the playoffs as I believe heads would have rolled and Brian Burke may well have been r...

Blackhawks fan goes into labor at Game 5, stays to watch

Donna Lebano is a big Chicago Blackhawks fan. She celebrated this Mother’s Day with her new baby boy, Owen Michael. Lebano went into labor one month ahead of schedule while she was watching the Blackhawks beat the Minnesota Wild at Chicago’s United Center last Thursday night. But she just couldn’t leave the game, even though she was having contractions.

Wild summer ahead or not? An autopsy of the Wild's 2013 season

"He said, Son I've made a life, out of readin' people's faces, and knowin' what the cards are by the way they held their eyes, so if you don't mind me saying, I can see you're out of aces, for a taste of your whiskey, I'll give you some advice. So I handed him my bottle, and he drank down my last swallow, bummed a cigarette and asked me for a light, and the night got deathly quiet, his face lost all expression and he began to speak. He said if you're going to play the game boy, you've got to learn to play it right. You gotta know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em, know when to walk away, and know when to run. You never count your money, when you're sittin' at the table they'll be time enough for countin', when the dealin's done," are the lyrics to famous country ballad the Gambler by Kenny Rogers. I loved that song as a kid and I still like it. I think you can apply it to two key figures of the Min...

After a year of constant change, Wild look for continuity

ST. PAUL, Minn. With the Minnesota Wild struggling to the finish of the regular season, Mike Yeo didnt have his head in the sand.
Minnesotas second-year coach heard the rumblings about his job security, but knew he couldnt get wrapped up in the unknown while his team was fighting for its first playoff berth in five years and then facing the Presidents Trophy winners in the first round. He took the questions about whether he felt safe and had no good answers.
Well, Id be an idiot if I didnt hear some of the questions I was being asked, Yeo said Saturday as he met the media knowing he will remain as coach of the Wild following their 4-1 series loss to the Chicago Blackhawks. As far as Im concerned, Ive got the best job in the world and, unfortunately, that is a part of it. So its always a possibility. That said, I really believe in what were doing here. I really believe were going in the right direction. Love to speed it up, but we are where we are. We just have to be ready to push harder and be ready to go a

Will the Minnesota Wild dump Dany Heatley?

The Minnesota Wild face some tough roster choices with the NHL salary cap shrinking for next season. That factor, combined with the production addition of winger Jason Pominville, led many experts to believe the team will ditch winger Dany Heatley. But general manager Chuck Fletcher noted how much the team missed Heatley after he suffered a season-ending shoulder injury April 3.“Dany Heatley, nobody talks about, but from the time he got hurt, our record wasn’t very good,” Fletcher told the Minneapolis Star-Tribune. “He’s a big body who can play against big teams. He gets to certain areas of the ice and he can be successful.”On the other hand, Heatley is due to collect a whopping $7.5 million on the final year of contract. The team needs to allocate money elsewhere, especially with goaltender Niklas Backstrom headed to unrestricted free agency.Backstrom can reasonably expect vigorous bidding for his services. To retain him, the Wild will have to pay top dollar.Heatley’s effort last sea...

Wild goalie Backstrom headed to surgery for sports hernia

ST. PAUL, Minn. Goaltender Niklas Backstrom was practicing for the Minnesota Wild in the playoffs, trying to return from an injury and aid the team he helped push to the playoffs for the first time in five years.

After Thursday's season-ending loss to the Chicago Blackhawks, what Backstrom was trying to fight back from was discovered.

Backstrom, who tied for the league-lead with 24 wins in the regular season, missed the entire playoffs after appearing to strain something in pregame warmups for Game 1 against the Chicago Blackhawks. Backstrom has been dealing with a sports hernia and is scheduled to have surgery to repair his core on Wednesday.

"It's tough when you find out about it, but you try to find a different place to get back there as soon as possible," Backstrom said. "And I think mentally it's good for you to work on your rehab so you don't think too much about missing the game and you can't be with the guys out on the ice.
Hall: Wild's offseason equally as important as last

ST. PAUL, Minn. When the Minnesota Wild won the NHL's offseason by signing the two top prized free agents in Zach Parise and Ryan Suter, they had designs on winning in the postseason as well.

Minnesota likely ends the season feeling unfulfilled following Thursday night's 5-1 loss to the Chicago Blackhawks and 4-1 loss in the first-round series.

In giving Parise and Suter matching 13-year, 98 million contracts, the Wild had their sights set on division titles, playoff appearance and Stanley Cup chases. In the first season with Parise and Suter, Minnesota ended its four-year drought of playoff appearances, but fell short of its own expectations.

The Wild had their chances. The lockout-shortened season started slowly before Minnesota adjusted.
Wild sign 2012 second-rounder Bussieres

ST. PAUL, Minn. The Minnesota Wild added to their stable of young prospects Thursday by signing 2012 second-round pick Raphael Bussieres to an entry-level contract.

Bussieres, the No. 46 overall pick in last year's draft, had 29 goals and 39 assists with a plus-27 rating in 60 games for Baie-Comeau Drakkar in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League this season. A 6-foot-1, 197-pound forward, he was the QMJHL's No. 2 star in November when he had 10 goals and 13 assists in 13 games.

Bussieres has added four goals and 12 assists in 18 playoff games for Baie-Comeau, which trails Halifax, 3-1, in the championship series.

"We're very pleased to have Raphael under contract," Wild assistant general manager Brent Flahr said. "He's had a very good year on a quality team in Baie-Comeau that is competing for the QMJHL Championship. We look forward to seeing him in training camp."

Wild focusing on missed opportunities, power play

ST. PAUL, Minn. The Minnesota Wild assembled at the Minneapolis-St. Paul airport on Wednesday preparing for their flight to Chicago understanding the uphill climb they face in their first-round playoff series against the top-seeded Blackhawks.

After Tuesday's 3-0 loss at home, splitting the two games in Minnesota with Chicago, the Wild know the challenges they face. Their focus is on Game 5 Thursday in Chicago, knowing they can't look at the complete 3-1 deficit they need to overcome.

"We can't sit here and dwell on what's happened and we certainly can't feel sorry for ourselves," Minnesota coach Mike Yeo said. "This is where we're at. We got ourselves here, so we've got to get ourselves out of it."

It was the same concept from the players. They aren't looking beyond Thursday, knowing that without winning Thursday's game, subsequent games won't even be a factor.

"You've got to narrow your focus," center Matt Cullen said. "We&#

ST. PAUL, Minn. As if being down starting goaltender Niklas Backstrom wasn't tough enough for the Minnesota Wild against the league's top team in the first round of playoffs, Minnesota might have lost backup Josh Harding, too.

Harding, starting all four playoff games in place of Backstrom, left Tuesday night's Game 4 in the series against the Chicago Blackhawks with an apparent leg injury. Harding was replaced by rookie Darcy Kuemper, who gave up a goal to Chicago's Patrick Sharp on the first shot he faced.

Harding, who has amazed many by having a strong series after he spent much of the season on injured reserve while dealing with a change in medication to combat his multiple sclerosis, was run into by Blackhawks forward Jonathan Toews during the first period Tuesday. Toews went hard into Harding, who fell and had hit the goalpost with his each of his legs splitting the post.

Toews fell on Harding, who was slow to get up, but played the remainder of the period. He was in obvious pain and

Pominville nearing return to ice for Wild

ST. PAUL, Minn. Jason Pominville has had to sit and watch his Minnesota Wild teammates take on the Chicago Blackhawks in the playoffs.
Pominville, Minnesota's big trade deadline acquisition, might not have to watch much longer.
Pominville, out with an "upper-body injury," participated in the Wild's morning skate Tuesday, his second straight day on the ice with his teammates, and is a game-time decision for Game 4 Tuesday night.
"I don't know yet to be honest with you," Pominville said after Tuesday's morning skate. "I'm just doing my best, trying to get the proper treatment done, doing my best to get back to where I need to be, and that decision will be up to the coach, but I'm headed in the right direction, that's for sure."
Wild coach Mike Yeo didn't rule Pominville out, but left open the decision whether he could return Tuesday night. Pominville had four goals and five assists in 10 games for Minnesota after being acquired from the Buffalo Sabr

Wild rookies get valuable playoff experience

ST. PAUL, Minn. One of the key factors many used against the Minnesota Wild entering the playoffs was the lack of postseason experience from the young Wild.

With starting goaltender Niklas Backstrom being injured in pregame warmups, the lineup for Game 1 of Minnesota's series against the Chicago Blackhawks included goaltender Josh Harding and his one career playoff game. The defense included Ryan Suter (39 postseason games) and five players making their NHL playoff debuts. The forward group included another four players making their debut.

The Wild's experienced players have tried to mentor the young group along the way, such as veteran Matt Cullen, who now has 66 playoff games under his belt and has won a Stanley Cup. Cullen, 36, remembers when he was the one being mentored.

"You can just say it," Cullen joked about being old. "You never really think about it. It just happens. It happened so fast. I still remember being a rookie in Anaheim with (Paul) Kariya and (Teemu) Selanne and

Jason Zucker wins it for the Wild

After blowing a 2-1 lead late in the third period, the Minnesota Wild were back on their heels at the start of overtime. But, Wild forward Matt Cullen made an awesome play from his stomach to not only keep control of the puck but to get it to Jason Zucker. Chicago Blackhawks goalie Corey Crawford was down early and that gave Zucker some room up top to shoot. Despite his horrible angle, Zucker found a space and fired the puck home to win the game. This goal brought the series to 2-1 and has given the Wild a chance again. Had they gone down 3-0 they would have been in serious trouble.
Backstrom hoping to get back on ice for Minnesota

ST. PAUL, Minn. Niklas Backstrom waited five years to get back to the playoffs with the Minnesota Wild.

Now he's just trying to get back on the ice while his team is still playing.

The Wild have returned home facing a 2-0 playoff series deficit to the Chicago Blackhawks, and Backstrom has missed the past two games after suffering a lower-body injury in pregame warm-ups prior to Game 1. Backstrom was on the ice for the team's morning skate before Game 2 but wasn't in the lineup Friday night, and he was back on the ice Saturday a day ahead of Sunday's Game 3.

But Backstrom's status for what seems like a must-win game is unknown.

"It's getting better," he said Saturday. "It's getting there. It's going to take time, but it's something you work on every day. Every morning you wake up, you hope it's better."

Wild coach Mike Yeo said he wouldn't reveal his starting goaltender for Game 3 until "sometime before the game tomorrow."
