So Canucks fans. Yesterday Mike Gillis emailed me. Did he email you too? You should check your email!

Here is the letter.

Thank you for your passion and support for our team; it is an honour and a privilege to host and play in front of you. However, this season and the way it ended was a disappointment to all of us.

Everyone in our organization expects more – and we know you do as well. It is my responsibility as the leader of this organization to evaluate all aspects of our hockey club and find ways to improve. This off-season will lead to difficult decisions including roster adjustments and changes in personnel. We're going to have to reinvent ourselves in order to be successful.

On behalf of our entire organization, I thank you for your loyalty and assure you we will work as hard as we can to make you proud and to ultimately win the Stanley Cup.

Sincerely,

Michael D. Gillis
President & General Manager
Vancouver Canucks

The past season for the Vancouver Canucks that ended with an embarrassing playoff exit is tough to get over. It was beyond a terrible season for the Canucks, who base season on their insanely high standards.

Size does matter…options for the Canucks

Younger and Bigger
After the second-straight season where the Vancouver Canucks have been bounced out of the NHL playoffs in the first round, GM Mike Gillis stepped to the microphone and offered his synopsis of the season, state of the franchise, and the new direction the ‘Nucks will be heading.
“Younger and bigger” was Gillis’ answer on how to produce results. Concerned that the NHL is trending to a more physical, less skilled nature and tired about his team being leaned on too much without much push back, Gillis wasn’t shy on what type of players he will be looking for in the future.
Looking back a few months ago, Gillis had already started his new regime by making a quiet signing in mid-March. That’s when Kellan Lain became the newest Vancouver Canuck. Who’s Lain? A 6’6” 225lb forward from Lake Superior State University.
A solid skater with good face-off skills, Lain’s physical attributes are exactly what the Canucks, and Canucks fans, are looking for.

It’s time to fire Alain Vigneault

After an inconsistent regular season and a complete no show in the playoffs, for Alain Vigneault, it’s time to go. The most successful head coach in Canucks history has been in Vancouver for 7 seasons now, and the players need a new message.
While he has his critics, AV has been behind the bench for the Canucks for the best stretch of years in Canucks history. They have made the playoffs 6 out of 7 years. They have 6 northwest division titles and 2 President’s Trophies. They made it to at least the 2nd round on 4 occasions, including nearly winning the 2011 Stanley Cup. Through it all, Vigneault was there, and he deserves credit for that.
But the expiration date has passed on this coach.
Unless Vigneault could somehow reinvent himself and have the players buy in, to which nobody in their right mind would bank on, there’s not a lot of new material left for Vigneault to motivate his players. They have heard it all before.
This core group of players has heard what he had to say before ...

Time For A Coaching Change In Vancouver

from Tony Gallagher of the Vancouver Province,

When Mike Gillis said all those good things about Alain Vigneault at his Thursday press conference, there is absolutely no question he meant every one of them, and when the coach is fired, it won’t mean there’s been any change to those feelings — it just means it’s time for a change.

In fact, it’s long, long overdue, and the only reason Vigneault coached here and not in Montreal this season is because Gillis felt strongly he should continue.

There have been reports he refused to sign his own contract extension unless the organization was going to renew Vigneault at the same time, though Gillis denied that Thursday. But ownership has been sour on the coach now for some time, so when the move is made, nobody should feel the coach is being maligned or put upon.

It turns out the ownership was right, and among mistakes Gillis has made, this is one he’s almost certain never to repeat — wait too long on a coach.

Canucks GM: Luongo return 'unlikely'

Roberto Luongo may finally get his wish.

The veteran goalie has wanted out of Vancouver since Cory Schneider usurped him as the primary starter late last season, and he didn't change his mind after both goalies looked shaky in an opening-round sweep at the hands of the Sharks.

"I feel like I am in a stage of my life where I want to play," Luongo said during his exit interview on Thursday. "Whether that's here or somewhere else remains to be seen. But what has happened over the course of the last two years suggests that maybe it's not my place to be the starter here anymore. That being said, things change so, who knows."

Canucks general manager Mike Gillis gave further credence to the idea that Luongo will be hitting the road, calling the prospect of him returning next season "unlikely."

They’re just not good enough: Canucks get swept by San Jose

It was one of the most disappointing first round series in Canucks history and not just for obvious reasons. The Canucks didn’t lose to the Sharks because of a bad bounce (of which there were a few) or bad penalties (of which there were lots). No, they lost because they weren’t good enough. This was not an aberration, it was a revelation. The Canucks aren’t as good as many of us thought they were.
By no means am I suggesting that the Canucks were the odds on favourites to win the Stanley Cup this year, but I certainly thought they were in the mix. But to watch how they lost to San Jose, big changes need to be made.
Sure, the Canucks played San Jose reasonably well at even strength, but special teams matter as well. The Canucks made the Sharks power play (a good power play during the regular season) look like the power play of the 1970s Montreal Canadiens.
Sure, the Canucks had injuries to Chris Tanev, David Booth and Cory Schneider, but good teams don’t roll over at the first sign o...

Major changes loom for Canucks

Major changes loom after the Vancouver Canucks, who came within a victory of winning the Stanley Cup two years ago, bowed out early for the second consecutive spring.

Management is trying to figure out what went wrong in the playoffs for a team that viewed itself as a strong contender, but never approached its target. Instead, the Canucks were swept by San Jose in the opening round.

General manager Mike Gillis decided not to make any major moves following last year's five-game loss to the Los Angeles Kings. Gillis thought the club was close to returning to the Stanley Cup finals, but the humiliating sweep by the Sharks likely means that, as players have acknowledged, the window of opportunity is closing quickly and bold moves are inevitable.

The Canucks have lost 10 of their last 11 playoff games dating to the 2010-11 finals.

''It's frustrating,'' goaltender Cory Schneider said in San Jose following Tuesday's 4-3 overtime loss. ''This seems like a lost year. You don&#39

Sedins to play for Sweden at worlds

Vancouver Canucks forwards Daniel and Henrik Sedin and defenseman Alex Edler will play for Sweden at the world hockey championships.

J.P. Barry, the Sedins' agent, confirmed Wednesday the twins will play for their homeland at the tournament. They will leave Vancouver for Stockholm on Friday after attending a media availability to discuss the disappointing end of the Canucks' season.

The Swedes became available after the Canucks were eliminated from the Stanley Cup playoffs Tuesday by the San Jose Sharks in four games.

This will mark the fifth time the Sedins have represented Sweden in world championship play. They helped their homeland win bronze medals in 2001 and 1999.

In sin bin, Canucks defenseman Kevin Bieksa ridiculed by Sharks fans (video)

The San Jose Sharks mercifully ended the season for the Vancouver Canucks on Tuesday night, completing the series sweep courtesy of a 4-3 overtime victory in front of the hometown fans at HP Pavilion. And while the game was not without controversy — a controversial boarding penalty called on Daniel Sedin (his brother Henrik called the penalty “bulls**t”) led to Patrick Marleau’s series-clinching goal 13:18 into the extra session — but perhaps the most amusing scene occurred when Canucks defenseman Kevin Bieksa was sent to the sin bin late in the 3rd period. Bieksa accused Sharks forwards Logan Couture and Joe Thornton of embellishment in attempts to draw penalties throughout the series, and when he was shipped to penalty box for cross checking, two Sharks fans let him have it. I’m not particularly astute at deciphering non-verbal communication, but I’m pretty sure these two Sharks fans are accusing Bieksa of being a crybaby: Yeah, that’s definitely what they’re doing. And the fans’...

Fans Losing Faith In The Canucks

from David Ebner of the Globe and Mail,

Up Robson Street, the sidewalk was crowded. The Canucks Team Store, near Bute Street, was almost empty, four people inside. Three of those were the Adolph family, father Ivan and his wife visiting from Lillooet to see their 25-year-old daughter Ayla, who lives in town. Ivan, a hockey fan, had purchased two white Canucks playoff towels for $5 each. He's a Canucks backer but not wildly fervent and the current situation distresses him.

"Not really right now, just the way they're playing," said Ivan outside the store. He pinned blame on coach Alain Vigneault, and defended goaltender Roberto Luongo. "It's not Lui's fault."

Ayla said the mood of the city is the opposite of June, 2011, when the team nearly won the Cup. "That was a really good time," she said. "Now, nobody cares."

Certainly, fans are not fighting to buy tickets. Demand for Canucks tickets was already weak this sp...

Preparing The Canucks For The Future

from Tony Gallagher of the Vancouver Province,

When next season begins, the Vancouver Canucks will once again be a strong contender to make the playoffs — and if things go well, perhaps even challenge for the lead at times in their newly realigned environment.

They’ll still have outstanding goaltending, and a decent back end, and general manager Mike Gillis will have done something, anything, to improve this popgun offence which has literally choked the life out of what was once a promising shortened 2013 season.

They’ll still have Ryan Kesler — although who knows in what condition — the deteriorating Sedins, David Booth, Alex Burrows, etc., which is fine for the regular season, and perhaps it might even be refreshing for next year’s team to be free of the weighty illusion that they are Cup contenders.

But really, for management, next year is not the issue.

NHL game puts pizza order in disarray

Friday night was a tough one for one pizza-loving Vancouver Canucks fan, whose pick-up order for a rally snack during the Canucks' Game 2 meeting with San Jose quickly became a pie that called for delivery, before ultimately arriving at his door as a somber reminder of another game gone wrong.

The story starts with this tweet of a receipt reportedly showing the details of what was supposed to be a Canucks fan's pick-up order:

FUNNY: Customer changes order from pickup to delivery because #Canucks tied game, can't leave the house. #sportsbiz twitter.com/cannonjw/statu...

-- J.W. Cannon (@cannonjw) May 4, 2013 The photo is sparse on other details, but best we can surmise, the order was likely placed during the second intermission of Game 2, with the third-seeded Canucks -- who were already in a 1-0 series hole after losing Game 1 at home -- trailing the visiting Sharks 1-0. One could hardly blame the fan for wanting to distance himself from another disappointing home loss to an underdog, so pick-

Cory Schneider out, Vancouver Canucks in peril

The Vancouver Canucks appear to be lagging. Since the playoffs are underway, this is not good. They didn’t show much fight during their 3-1 loss to San Jose in Game 1 of their series. It didn’t help that No. 1 goaltender Cory Schneider was sidelined by what the team calls a “body” injury. Schneider will miss Game 2, too. But what about his big-name teammates? Will they show up?“A lot of us have to put in that extra five per cent, to get those better scoring chances,” winger Daniel Sedin told reporters. “We didn’t have enough great chances. It takes a little more, yes. Not much, but yes. At this time of year? More.”Coach Alain Vigneault knows the old saying: You best players have to be your best players this time of the season. That was not the case in Game 1.“We have to find a way to be better,” Vigneault told reporters. “Not just with the twins, with everybody. There were some good moments . . . but I think – I don’t think, I know – our top guys can play better than they did toni

Sharks announcer rags on Canucks green men

The Vancouver Canucks green men have gained a healthy slice of notoriety over the years for their antics in mocking opposing players visiting the penalty box. Drew Remenda is not a fan. The Sharks announcer threw in a “40-year-old virgins” potshot when they greeted Marc-Edouard Vlasic to the box Wednesday night in Game 1. Moments later Randy Hahn joined in on the green man bashing. Don’t think the dislike between these two teams ends with the players. [video via @cjzero]

Roberto Luongo will start Game 1 for the Canucks

Roberto Luongo will start Game 1 for the Canucks

We just out via Sportsnet Pacific's twitter feed that Roberto Luongo will get the start for the Canucks in game 1 vs. the Sharks.

He said "It was good for me to get a couple starts in before the playoffs"

What do you think Vancouver? It appears Schneider isn't ready to return just yet. Schneider, who played all three regular-season games against the Sharks, participated in practice Monday. While coach Alain Vigneault only would describe the netminder's physical problem as a "body injury,"

Matt Sekeres of 1040 tweeted during the gameday skate today Schneider did the starter's drills and was the first one off the ice but apparently LU is the man tonight.

What do you think Canucks fans?

Canucks' Schneider back at practice

Vancouver Canucks goaltender Cory Schneider returned to practice Monday.

However his status for the first game of the Stanley Cup quarterfinals against the San Jose Sharks remained uncertain. Game 1 of the series is Wednesday night.

Schneider was injured April 22 in a win over Chicago, when he played the whole game without any apparent discomfort. He had not practiced with the team since then and missed Vancouver's final two regular-season games, but worked out briefly with an assistant coach Sunday.

Coach Alain Vigneault said Schneider's status remains day to day.

''It wasn't really a rest issue,'' Schneider said. ''It was a day-to-day injury, and I had to take some time off.''

Schneider said he knows when he was injured against the Blackhawks, but declined to elaborate. He has been making progress in his recovery and hopes to play against the Sharks at some point.

''I'd love to play in the playoffs,'' Schneider said. ''I've fe

Roberto Luongo Admits His Contract ‘Sucks,’ Says It’s Probably Why He’s Still With Canucks (Video)

The NHL’s worst-kept secret for the last year or so has been the Vancouver Canucks’ attempt to trade goaltender Roberto Luongo. The club reportedly had talks over the summer about moving him, and those talks reportedly resurfaced again this week.
The suspense was at an all-time high Wednesday just minutes before the deadline. The goalie was pulled off the ice from practice just minutes before the deadline, and speculation ran wild. However, the 3 p.m. ET trade deadline came and went, and Luongo was not traded.
He has a pretty solid reason as to why he might still be a Canuck.
“My contract sucks,” Luongo told reporters following practice. ”That’s what the problem is. Unfortunately it’s a big factor in trading me and it’s probably why I’m still here.”
Luongo signed a 12-year deal worth $64 million prior to the 2010-11 season. He’s signed through 2021-22, and he comes with a $5.33 million cap hit for the duration of that deal.
“I’d scrap it if I could right now,” Luongo said.
