Anchor makes mistake on Kings highlight

Liz Habib and Fox 11 in Los Angeles are back providing playoff highlights for Los Angeles Kings fans, and once again they are back doing a terrible job. According to Habib, Willie Mitchell scored with 10 minutes left in the third period of game four against the San Jose Sharks. Unfortunately for Habib, it was actually Mike Richards that scored. Mitchell hasn’t played in a game since game 6 of the 2012 Stanley Cup Finals and because his knee is so messed up, he might miss the start of the 2013-2014 season too. If you remember the name Liz Habib, it’s because she was the one behind the “Anze Kopidor” and “Brad Doty” highlight segment, that even consisted of the old NHL logo from before the lockout. Yeah, Fox 11 news is really brutal when it comes to hockey.
Sharks Shutout by LA Kings, Need to Avoid Elimination in Game 6 On Sunday

Jonathan Quick and the Los Angeles Kings were simply better than the San Jose Sharks Thursday night. There’s no over analysis necessary, no need to look for reasons things didn’t go the Sharks’ way, the Kings outplayed them. It’s truly as simple as that.
Quick was perfect in the net for the Kings, saving all 24 shots that came his way as he blanked San Jose for the second time this playoff series.
Anze Kopitar gave the Kings a 1-0 lead at 18:08 in the second period and Los Angeles never had any reason to look back. Third period goals by Slava Voynov and Jeff Carter proved to be just icing on the cake as the Kings took a 3-2 series lead heading back to San Jose Sunday night for Game 6, and their first attempt to eliminate the Sharks.
San Jose found themselves 0-for-3 on the power play, dropping themselves to 0-for-10 on the power play on the road this series.
“The power play was brutal. We didn’t deserve to win tonight,” Sharks center Logan Couture said.

Video: Jonathan Quick’s sick saves lead Kings to shutout win

On Thursday night the Los Angeles Kings and goalie Jonathan Quick shutout the San Jose Sharks 3-0 to take a 3-2 lead in their Western Conference semifinals series. Anything can happen during the NHL playoffs, but any team with a hot goaltender can win the whole thing. The Kings looked like that team Thursday night.
Quick made several phenomenal saves to earn his league-leading third shutout of the postseason. A few of the highlights from Quick’s outstanding night are after the jump.

Kings a win from conference finals

Jonathan Quick made 24 saves in his seventh career playoff shutout, and the Los Angeles Kings moved to the brink of their second straight trip to the Western Conference finals with a 3-0 victory over the San Jose Sharks in Game 5 on Thursday night.

Anze Kopitar and Slava Voynov scored, and Jeff Carter added an empty-net goal as the defending Stanley Cup champions won their 13th consecutive home game in dominant fashion and lead the series 3-2.

Antti Niemi stopped 26 shots for the Sharks, who have played more than 96 minutes without a goal since they appeared to be taking control of the series midway through Game 4.

Game 6 is Sunday night at the Shark Tank.

The home team has won every game in the series, and the Kings remained unbeaten at Staples Center since March 23.

After losing the past two games in San Jose and struggling through much of the past three games overall, the Kings rebounded with another stretch of dominant play from their Conn Smythe Trophy-winning goalie, who also shut out San Jose in t

Diving Talk Heats Up In The LA/SJ Series

from Lisa Dillman of the LA Times,

Kings defenseman Drew Doughty scoffed at the notion, put forth by Sharks forward TJ Galiardi, that goalie Jonathan Quick engages in “a little embellishment.”

Doughty stood up for his goalie Quick, a spirited defense, and then said the San Jose player is a noted diver. He took issue with the comments and said they went beyond the usual playoff back-and-forth.

“It’s not even playoff talk,” Doughty told The Times after Thursday’s morning skate before Game 5. “It’s just funny to even hear that from a guy who is the biggest diver on their team. Like it’s just ridiculous he can even say that, to be honest.

“But I don’t want to get involved in that stuff. I don’t think you have to watch many (Sharks’ games). You can just watch three of his shifts and you’ll see how many times he dives. There’s been times where even the refs are telling him, just get up, because he’s diving so often.”

Kings expected to tweak forward lines for Game 5

LOS ANGELES After being limited to one goal in each of the last two games against the San Jose Sharks, Kings coach Darryl Sutter looks like he is ready to shake up his line combinations for the pivotal Game 5 on Thursday night at Staples Center.

One goal is not going to win us many games, said forward Justin Williams. Plain and simple. Scorers got to score. Got to play better. Got to create more offense. Were not going to win every game one-nothing. What did Sutter say 3-2 league. Its been 2-1 lately, because we havent gotten any goals.

The line of Anze Kopitar, Dustin Brown and Williams have combined for just 11 points in the first two rounds of the playoffs, just two more points than Mike Richards has on his own.

Quite honestly, that line has struggled for two series, Sutter said.

With the season now coming down to a best of three, Sutter talked after Wednesdays practice about what the Kings need to do to generate some offense.

I think we need four lines with some balance," he said. "Other

LA Kings Tweet out sexual assault joke, issue apology

Kevin Ryder of the Kevin and Bean Morning Zoo show on LA’s KROQ took over the Los Angeles Kings Twitter Account during their game against the San Jose Sharks last night. It turned out to be a really bad decision on the Kings part as Ryder made an off-color joke about sexual assault to describe a penalty. The Kings quickly issued an apology and I think they will be more careful the next time they choose someone to tweet from their handle.
This isn’t the first time a professional sports franchise’s Twitter Account has made a bad a joke. When the Detroit Red Wings finally clinched a playoff spot for the 22nd year in a row, the Red Wings made a bad joke about suicide.
Seriously, think before you tweet.

LA Kings Twitter Account Goes In The Wrong Direction

from Chris Foster of the LA Times,

The Kings' official Twitter account received a game misconduct penalty Tuesday … from the Kings' front office.

Kevin Ryder, of KROQ's "Kevin & Bean" morning show, handled the Twitter posts for the Kings' Stanley Cup playoff game against the San Jose Sharks on Tuesday. He took over after the first period, with embarrassing results for the team.

At one point Ryder made light of sexual assault when describing a play that happened in front of the San Jose Sharks' net when the Kings' Anze Kopitar was knocked to the ice.

Kings dinged by ‘intent to blow’

The Los Angeles Kings dropped a 2-1 decision to the San Jose Sharks on Tuesday evening, allowing San Jose to tie their second-round series at 2 games apiece, and USA Today's Mike Brehm reports that referees' discretion played a role in the outcome of a game for the second time in two nights:

Tuesday, the Los Angeles Kings' Dustin Penner scored to cut his team's deficit against the San Jose Sharks to 2-1.

The problem: Referee Brad Meier had blown the play dead.

Replay showed that Slava Voynov's shot, deflected by Tyler Toffoli, had snuck through Sharks goalie Antti Niemi's pads. It was rolling across the goal line on its own when Penner helped it along.

Penner argued with Meier, but the no-goal call stood.

Brehm provides a YouTube video of the goal, and NHL.com's Eric Gilmore reports that the Kings were none too pleased with the call: Continue reading "Kings dinged by ‘intent to blow’"

LA Kings allow guest to run their Twitter, distasteful sexual assault joke follows

The LA Kings had a guy named Kevin Ryder run their Twitter account during the second period of Game 4 against the San Jose Sharks. Ryder is on a show called "Kevin & Bean" on KROQ 106.7 FM. The show falls directly into the category of shock humor. Once Ryder took over mostly weak attempts at humor followed, but the controversy here is all about one Tweet that refers to Anze Kopitar being sexually assaulted. The Kings quickly removed the Tweet, but Sean Gentille took a screenshot. It's one thing to be snarky and a bit edgy. It's another to use what boils down to a rape joke on an NHL team's Twitter account. Though Ryder is responsible for the Tweet itself, those behind LA's account and marketing team are responsible for allowing him to use it in the first place. We're not sure who thought it was a good idea or how the idea was approved, but here we are. If you go and look through Ryder's work, this isn't exactly a surprising outcome. P...

Dustin Penner Tweets Exactly What Everyone Is Thinking About Darren Rovell

Darren Rovell was doing his daily trolling of athletes and finally hit a little bump in road. Rovell Tweeted about Dustin Penner talking about how much he likes Taco Bell, and how the Kings can’t control him even though they have a sponsorship with McDonalds. Rovell does this a few hundred times a day, give or take, and usually doesn’t get called out for spouting off useless facts but Penner did just that. Thank you, Dustin penner.

LA Kings return home between road playoff games

With two days off in an all-California series, the Los Angeles Kings seized the opportunity to fly home for two days of practice before Game 4.

After their performance in Game 3, it is clear the defending Stanley Cup champions still need plenty of work.

The Kings went through a short workout at their training complex Sunday after sleeping in their own beds following a 2-1 overtime loss to the San Jose Sharks on Saturday night.

Such easy travel usually isn't possible in the spread-out Western Conference, but Game 4 isn't until Tuesday night at the Shark Tank.

''We were home at pretty much the same time as we would coming from Staples on a regular night,'' center Anze Kopitar said. ''It's a 50-minute flight, so it's pretty quick. I think it's good for us.''

Los Angeles' 2-1 loss in Game 3 ended on a power-play goal after two penalty calls that angered and confused the Kings for several reasons. Yet captain Dustin Brown acknowledged the Kings have plen

Jonathan Quick fined $200 for post-Game 3 temper tantrum (Video)

Oh, how the tables turned against the Kings at the end of Game 3. After being on the wrong end of a miraculous comeback in Game 2 thanks to a late two-man advantage, the Sharks were the ones who capitalized on penalties late to capture Game 3 on a Logan Couture overtime winner.
The Kings were already a man down with under a minute in regulation after a Robyn Regehr hooking minor when Trevor Lewis was also sent off for goalie interference with five seconds remaining on the clock. The Kings argued Lewis was pushed into Antti Niemi, to no avail. That gave the Sharks 1:19 of 5-on-3 heading into overtime. It was looking a whole lot like de ja vu.
The Regehr penalty expired without a Sharks score. But not long after, still a man up, Joe Thornton, Patrick Marleau and Couture played tic-tac-toe to blast the puck past Jonathan Quick to secure the win. The Kings’ series lead is now down to 2-1.
It was a sequence of events that brought Quick to seeing red. Watch as the Kings’ netminder throws ...

Kings' Kopitar ready to return

Anze Kopitar won't allow a puck to the face to keep him out of the Los Angeles Kings' title defense.

Kopitar returned to practice at the Kings' training complex on Friday, and he's ready to play in Game 3 on Saturday night at the Shark Tank after surviving a scary moment in the third period of Game 2 against the San Jose Sharks.

Kopitar missed only a few minutes of the Kings' 4-3 victory Thursday night after a shot by teammate Dustin Brown hit him in the left side of his face above his upper lip.

''I've felt better before, but I guess when you come out of the situation with a couple of stitches, it's not too bad,'' Kopitar said before the Kings' flight to San Jose. ''I wanted to make sure it's nothing serious. As soon as I found out, I wanted to come back. It's really a no-brainer.''

Brown's shot caught Kopitar squarely in the face, and a hush fell over Staples Center as he went down in a heap and finally skated off with a towel o

Kings keep home ice with epic comeback over Sharks

LOS ANGELES -- Facing the prospect of losing home-ice advantage, the Los Angeles Kings rallied with a pair of power-play goals by Dustin Brown and Trevor Lewis, scoring 22 seconds apart in the final minutes for a dramatic 4-3 come-from-behind victory over the San Jose Sharks.

We found a way," said Kings coach Darryl Sutter. You know what, the power play was on, weve been talking about it. Weve been getting good looks and good opportunities and not finishing and we got it from different guys quite honestly. It was good to see Brown score a goal, breakout hopefully, and Lewis scoring the winner and Toffoli making a great play.

For Kings rookie Tyler Toffoli, he was arguably the Kings' best player on the ice, especially in the third period where he played half of his total minutes in the game.

It was Toffoli who drew the penalty that led to the tying goal and made an incredible tape-to-tape pass to Lewis for the game-winning goal.

I thought he stepped in and played great," Brown said. He got a

Anze Kopitar takes puck to the face

The Los Angeles Kings pulled off a playoff miracle on Thursday night, grabbing a 4-3 victory over the San Jose Sharks from the jaws of defeat with two late goals. But the Kings almost didn’t have their best player on the ice for the big finish, as center Anze Kopitar took a puck to the face early in the third period, opening up a serious cut that needed to be closed. After a trip to the locker room for stitches, Kopitar came back on the ice a few minutes later to a rousing ovation from the home fans. His return buoyed the Kings, who trailed 3-2 at the time. Los Angeles wound up scoring two goals in the final two minutes of the game, to snag a win and take a 2-0 lead in the Western Conference semifinals. Kopitar was nailed in the face with a puck off the stick of teammate Dustin Brown that was slightly deflected by San Jose’s Dan Boyle. Video of the play is after the jump.

Sharks’ Raffi Torres suspended after brutal hit on Jarrett Stoll

The NHL’s Department of Player Safety called San Jose Sharks winger Raffi Torres in for a little one-on-one meeting after seeing his hit to the head of Kings center Jarrett Stoll in the series opener Tuesday night.
The result? He’s suspended for the duration of the playoff series, which means anywhere from 3 to 6 games. Stoll was to sit out game 2 on Thursday due to the hit.
Kings coach Darryl Sutter called the hit “careless,” and before the suspension was announced, said it really didn’t matter. ”Our player is quite a bit more important than theirs,” he said.

Kings reporter congratulates Matthew Perry on his show being cancelled

During the Los Angeles Kings-St. Louis Blues game 6 on Friday night, Fox Sports’ Dan Moriarty went to interview Matthew Perry and it quickly went downhill. Moriarty inexplicably congratulated Perry on his “big news,” which turned out to be his show Go On had been cancelled. Moriarty referred to the cancellation as a “double-edged sword” because now it freed Perry up to see more Kings games. What was this guy thinking? Why would anyone be happy that their show had been cancelled and they were now unemployed?
