L.A. Kings tweet off-color joke

An unfortunate, off-color sexual assault joke was tweeted on the LA Kings Twitter account tonight. Most official sports teams Twitter accounts are very dry and dull. And/or overly positive all the time. The LA Kings Twitter account is an exception. At times it can be quite funny, snarky and irreverent. Unfortunately, the LA Kings went a little too far by letting Kevin Ryder, of the Kevin and Bean show on KROQ Los Angeles, live Tweet the LA Kings vs. San Jose Sharks Stanley Cup playoff game. Ryder took over during the second period of Tuesday night’s game. He made an unfunny joke in bad taste about sexual assault. The LA Kings deleted the Tweet and quickly an apology. The now deleted Tweet said: “Galiardi gets a penalty for running over Quick. Power play Kings. Kopitar just got sexually assaulted in front of Niemi.- @TheKevinRyder” And the LA Kings retraction: We apologize for the tweets that came from a guest of our organization. They were inappropriate and do not reflect the LA K...

Logan Couture ‘all good’ to play for Sharks in Game 4 vs. Kings

Logan Couture said he is “all good” to play in Game 4 Tuesday night against the Kings. Couture, who has developed into the Sharks’ primary offensive threat, was gone for most of the second period in Game 3 Saturday with a leg injury, leaving many Sharks fans in the Tank awaiting in their seats with soiled pants. Couture, of course, returned and went on to score the game-winner in overtime, causing Jonathan Quick to react like somebody stole his Pizza Rolls.
Here’s more from David Pollak:
With two days off between games, players had a little extra time to get over their “bumps and bruises.”
“It helped me and I’m sure it helped some other guys as well — their team and our team,” Couture said. “Rest is big, especially this time of the year.”
Sharks Coach Todd McLellan said Couture could have skated Monday, but “it made no sense to put him on the ice. He looked good this morning and he’s excited about playing. I don’t think it’s an issue or factor at all.”

Kearns Finally Found The Right Situation

from Eric Gilmore at NHL.com,

San Jose Sharks forward Bracken Kearns already had played for seven different minor-league teams over six-plus seasons before he made his NHL debut, Oct. 20, 2011, as a member of the Florida Panthers.

Kearns turned 32 two days before making his Stanley Cup Playoff debut, May 14 for the Sharks, in Game 1 of their Western Conference Semifinals against the Los Angeles Kings.

If the Sharks gave out awards for Most Patient Player, it undoubtedly would go to Kearns, the son of former Vancouver Canucks defenseman Dennis Kearns.

"My dad's first year in the NHL, he was 26 and he played 10 years," Kearns said. "He was a bit of a late-bloomer. He always told me in this game you need somebody to like you, a GM or a coach. Sometimes you have to go through people who aren't really big on you until you find the right situation, and this organization's been really good to me."

Jason Demers return for Sharks in Game 4 and play forward

Sharks defenseman Jason Demers has been out of the lineup since April 18 with a sprained left ankle, but he could return to the ice for Tuesday’s Game 4 against the Kings.
Demers says he’s ready to play, but the ultimate decision is with the coaching staff. If he is inserted back into the lineup, it may be at forward, with Adam Burish still unable to play, Raffi Torres suspended and Martin Havlat once again back on the injured list after failing to make it through Game 3.
“I’ll go in wherever they want me to right now,” said Demers, who also practiced on defense Monday.
Demers’ experience at forward goes back to the 2009-10 campaign when he played up front towards the end of the season and the first round of the playoffs. Here’s Todd McLellan talking about the possibility of doing that again, and as per usual, he’s not tipping his hand:
“We were preparing in case we would like to use that option. If we dress seven, we may move somebody up to play some shifts,” said McLellan, who fac...

San Jose Sharks Fined $100,000 After GM Doug Wilson Comments on Raffi Torres Suspension

The San Jose Sharks have a hefty fine that will go along with Raffi Torres‘ suspension for the remainder of the Sharks’ series against the Los Angeles Kings.
Torres was suspended by the NHL for a vicious hit on Kings center Jarrett Stoll during Game 1, and Sharks general manager, Doug Wilson, took exception to the decision and it has cost the organization $100,000, according to CBS Sports.
Wilson commented on the suspension saying, “comparing the facts of this incident against the actual wording of Rule 48.1, it appears that the NHL has not only made an inappropriate application of this rule but is trying to make an example out of a player who is being judged on past events, one who has changed his game dramatically this season and taken only six minor penalties in 39 games.”
The NHL fined the team for Wilson’s comments, saying that they were a violation of league rules that bar teams from making official statements in the 48-hour window after a disciplinary ruling has been made. Th...

Logan Couture emerges as leader on Sharks

(Eds: With AP Photos.) By JOSH DUBOW AP Sports Writer When Logan Couture limped off the ice in the middle of a tied game San Jose desperately needed to win, it looked as if he was taking the Sharks' playoffs hopes with him.

Instead Couture managed to make it back out on the ice to give his team an emotional spark and topped that by scoring the overtime game-winner that got the Sharks back into their second-round series against Los Angeles with a 2-1 victory in Game 3 on Saturday night.

It's just the latest big moment for a young player who has emerged as a leader and perhaps the top player on a Sharks team looking to make a deep playoff run.

''Logan is a huge, huge part of our team,'' coach Todd McLellan said Saturday. ''This is his coming out party. Nationally people have probably started talking about him. But we've known Logan like this for a long time.''

How About Some New Rules And Torres Talk Too

from Larry Brooks of the New York Post,

 * New rule: When a penalty is assessed at the 20:00 mark of a period, the next period shall begin with the faceoff in the offensive zone of the club on the power play and not at the center dot.

New rule: When a player intentionally is thrown out of the faceoff circle following an icing in order to give his team a few extra seconds of rest — as was the case twice with the Bruins’ Milan Lucic in Game 1 against the Rangers — a delay of game minor shall be called.

 * Boy, oh boy, is there an abundance of misplaced pity on behalf of Raffi Torres, the serial predator now employed by the Sharks serving a suspension of up to six games for his — what else? — headshot that took out the Kings Jarret Stoll in Game 1 of the Western semis.

And in arguing on behalf of his player, Sharks general manager Doug Wilson comes off as just another in a long line of NHL enablers whose failure to condemn recidivists such as Torres and Patrick Kaleta co...

Kings drop Game 3 to Sharks after questionable call

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Its been said that a referee is doing a good job when he goes unnoticed.

However, just three games into the second-round playoff series between the Los Angeles Kings and San Jose Sharks, the officiating has become front and center.

With just four seconds left in regulation and the Kings already a man down, Kings forward Trevor Lewis was called for goaltender interference with 4.5 seconds left in regulation.

The Sharks entered overtime on a 5-on-3 power play and capitalized for a 2-1 victory on a goal by a wide open Logan Couture to cut the Kings' series lead, 2-1.

You give him that kind of time and that kind of space he is most likely going to make you pay and he did, said Kings defenseman Rob Scuderi.

Still, all the talk in the Kings locker room following the game centered around the penalty call on Trevor Lewis.

I didnt think it was a penalty," Lewis said. Something happened, I dont know.

I find it very tough to believe that a player as intelligent as Trevor would run th

Logan Couture scored a power-play goal 1:29 into overtime to help the San Jose Sharks bounce back from two losses in Los Angeles to beat the Kings 2-1 in Game 3 of their second-round series on Saturday night.

Dan Boyle scored a power-play goal early in the first period and Antti Niemi made 26 saves for the Sharks, who got the penalty calls to go in their favor down the stretch in this game.

Rookie Tyler Toffoli scored the lone goal for the defending Stanley Cup champion Kings, who had won six straight games since dropping the first two in the opening round in St. Louis. Jonathan Quick made 38 saves.

Game 4 is Tuesday night in San Jose.

Two nights after losing 4-3 on a pair of late power-play goals by Los Angeles in Game 2, the Sharks took advantage of their late-game chances on the power play. Tommy Wingels drew a hooking penalty on Robyn Regehr with 41.7 seconds left in regulation, and the task got even more difficult for Los Angeles when Trevor Lewis was called for goaltender interference when he crashe

Saturday night's contest was "Must Win" for the San Jose Sharks, a loss would put the team in a deep 3-0 hole against the defending Stanley Cup Champion, Los Angeles Kings and San Jose's season would certainly be over with in LA victory. Luckily, for the San Jose Sharks the power play was working in Game 3.
NHL fines Sharks for GM's comments

The NHL fined the San Jose Sharks $100,000 on Saturday for general manager Doug Wilson's public comments about forward Raffi Torres' suspension.

The NHL said the fine was issued for violation of rules prohibiting formal team statements to the media during the 48-hour period following a disciplinary decision. The rule calls for an automatic $25,000 fine, and the Sharks were docked an additional $75,000 under an article in the league's constitution because of the ''inappropriate nature of the comments.''

Torres was suspended for the rest of San Jose's second-round playoff series against Los Angeles on Thursday for an illegal check to the head of Kings forward Jarret Stoll during Game 1. The Kings took a 2-0 lead into Game 3 on Saturday night in San Jose.

Wilson said Friday that the organization strongly disagreed with the NHL's decision to suspend Torres.

''It is abundantly clear that this was a clean hockey hit,'' Wilson said in a statement. ''As

Looks as if Sharks GM Doug Wilson will not be getting away with the giant middle finger he gave to the NHL with his acrimonious statement in response to the “grossly unfair” Raffi Torres suspension. That statement read in part: Comparing the facts of this incident against the actual wording of Rule 48.1, it appears that the NHL has not only made an inappropriate application of this rule but is trying to make an example out of a player who is being judged on past events [...] We are proud of the work Raffi has put in to successfully adjust his game. Although it’s unfortunate that Jarret was injured on the play, we feel this decision is grossly unfair to the Raffi, his teammates and our fans. (You can read the entire 436-word harangue here.) On Saturday, the franchise saw the heavy repercussions of Wilson’s venting. According to David Pollak, the Sharks have been fined $100,000 by the league for the remarks—$25 large for commenting on disciplinary actions during the 48-hour window the...

Sharks’ GM Doug Wilson fined $100,000 for comments regarding Torres suspension

Raffi Torres’ suspension proved quite costly….to his general manager. Image via Tumblr.
Raffi Torres just invites controversy wherever he goes. The San Jose Sharks forward has been suspended for the rest of their playoff series against the Los Angeles Kings after a hit to the head of L.A’s Jarrett Stoll. As a repeat offender (Torres was suspended for 25 games after a blow to the head on Chicago’s Marian Hossa during last year’s playoffs, when Torres was a member of the Phoenix Coyotes), Torres’ penalty was a bit harsher than someone else’s might have been…and one man’s reaction to the suspension ended up being quite costly.
Sharks general manager Doug Wilson took exception to the fine, saying that the NHL had taken “inappropriate action” and was “making an example out of a player who had taken only six minor penalties in 39 games”. The NHL was not amused, and wasted no time dropping the hammer on Wilson:

NHL Fines The San Jose Sharks $100K

NEW YORK (MAY 18, 2013) -- The San Jose Sharks have been fined $100,000 for public comments by General Manager Doug Wilson pertaining to the suspension of Sharks forward Raffi Torres, the National Hockey League announced today.

The fine was issued for violation of League Rules that prohibit formal team statements to the media during the 48-hour period following a disciplinary decision. The Rule calls for an automatic fine of $25,000. The Sharks were fined an additional $75,000 under Article 6 of the League's Constitution due to the inappropriate nature of the comments.

On January 17, 2013 a memorandum was issued to all Clubs regarding Disciplinary Procedures for the 2012-13 season. Following is the excerpt from the memorandum dealing with 'Prohibited Communications': Continue reading "NHL Fines The San Jose Sharks $100K"

San Jose GM Doug Wilson On The Torres Suspension

from the Sharks website,

The Sharks organization fully supports the NHL in its efforts to remove illegal and dangerous hits from the game but we strongly disagree with the NHL's decision to suspend Raffi Torres.

Upon review of the incident, it is abundantly clear that this was a clean hockey hit. As noted by the NHL, Raffi's initial point of contact was a shoulder-to-shoulder hit on an opponent who was playing the puck. He did not leave his feet or elevate, he kept his shoulder tucked and elbow down at his side, and he was gliding - not skating or charging.

As stated in the NHL's Player Safety video, Rule 48.1 says, "A hit resulting in contact with an opponent's head where the head is targeted and the principal point of contact is not permitted." Thus, with the use of the word "and", this rule clearly states that two elements must occur in order to violate the rule. Raffi absolutely did not target his opponent's head on the play. ...

Sharks GM Doug Wilson ‘strongly disagrees’ with Raffi Torres suspension in statement

On Thursday the NHL suspended Sharks winger Raffi Torres for the remainder of San Jose’s second round series against the Kings for a hit on Jarret Stoll in Game 1. We concluded the punishment was a bit of an overreaction by the NHL, a penalty that seemed to discipline the player more for his past rather than the offense in question. If you thought you were mad, imagine how Sharks GM Doug Wilson feels. Actually, scratch that. You don’t need to imagine. On Friday he released a strongly worded statement telling everybody exactly how he feels. (Spoiler alert: he’s pissed.) You’re going to want to read all of this: The Sharks organization fully supports the NHL in its efforts to remove illegal and dangerous hits from the game but we strongly disagree with the NHL’s decision to suspend Raffi Torres.
GM disagrees with Torres suspension

San Jose Sharks general manager Doug Wilson says the organization disagrees with the NHL's decision to suspend forward Raffi Torres for a hit that knocked out Los Angeles forward Jarret Stoll.

Wilson said in a statement issued Friday that it is ''abundantly clear'' that Torres' check in Game 1 against Stoll was a clean hockey hit.

The NHL's Department of Player Safety sharply disagreed while suspending Torres for the rest of the second-round series Thursday. It is the fourth career suspension for Torres, who is considered a repeat offender in dangerous hits under the league's collective bargaining agreement.

Wilson says Torres will not appeal the suspension.

Stoll missed Game 2 of the series and there is no timetable for his return.

Sharks' Torres suspended for series

San Jose Sharks forward Raffi Torres was suspended for the rest of the Western Conference semifinal series against Los Angeles on Thursday for a hit to Kings forward Jarret Stoll's head.

Torres was assessed a minor penalty for charging for the second-period hit Tuesday night in the Kings' 2-0 victory in Game 1. Under the Collective Bargaining Agreement, Torres is considered a repeat offender.

While playing for Phoenix last season, Torres received a 21-game suspension - initially 25 games - for a high hit on Chicago star Marian Hossa in the first round of the playoffs.

Torres was suspended for two games in January 2012 for charging Minnesota defenseman Nate Prosser and for four games in April 2011 for a hit to the head of Edmonton's Jordan Eberle while playing for Vancouver.
