Afflalo Wants To Play To His Strengths Next Season

Arron Afflalo is looking forward to playing to his strengths next season.
"I'm kind of getting to the age now where I'm kind of settling into being great at something," Afflalo said. "Whether it's being a high-level defensive player, a high-level shooter, an efficient scorer, doing the things where I'm really playing to my strengths. That's something I'm looking forward to."
With Afflalo often acting as the team’s go-to scorer, the Magic lost 62 games this season."It is what it is," Afflalo said. "We had a lot of firsts in terms of role definition, in terms of learning, in terms of the coaching staff. And when you're fully committed to doing better and trying to win it all at some point in time, you have to go through experiences like this. All we can do is try to learn from what happened this year and move forward into next year."

What does Arron Afflalo do best? He's ready to find out

ORLANDO, Fla. Arron Afflalo isn not about to describe what he is going through as a mid-career identity crisis.
But after six years in the NBA and the first in which he was on a team that failed to make the playoffs, the Orlando Magic guard is feeling the need to start making a name for himself.
"I'm kind of getting to the age now where I'm kind of settling into being great at something," he said. "Whether it's being a high-level defensive player, a high-level shooter, an efficient scorer, doing the things where I'm really playing to my strengths. That's something I'm looking forward to."
It would be understandable if Afflalo didn't want to look back for very long on his first season with the Magic. Not only did they lose 62 games, but he missed the last three weeks because of a tear in his right hamstring that is still preventing him from taking part in basketball drills.
"It is what it is," he said. "We had a lot of firsts in terms of role defi

Magic players rank low on shot selection

Things were going to change this season for the Magic. It did not take a genius to figure that out with Stan Van Gundy departing as head coach and Dwight Howard departing as the team's star.

In the five years those two were together the strategy for the Magic was simple. Either dump the ball into Dwight Howard to get a dunk or easy basket or have him collapse the defense and dish back out to the perimeter for a 3-pointer or a driving lane as the defense rotated back out.

This offense from Van Gundy sought to maximize efficiency by having the Magic take the two most efficient shots -- layups and 3-pointers. Mid-range jumpers were not a premium in that offense.

Partially because of the roster he had and partially because he was trying to implement his own offensive system, the Magic went away from this strategy. They no longer had the sure-fire low-post threat and they no longer had the same number of pure 3-point shooters. Offense would have to be created a new way.

Magic get no love from NBA All-Rookie teams

The Magic made it pretty clear -- particularly at the end of the season -- they were going to go young and play their rookies and young players to speed along their development. Orlando was not expecting any of its rookies to win the Rookie of the Year. Maurice Harkless, Andrew Nicholson, Kyle O'Quinn and DeQuan Jones were bringing brought along slowly.

They all still had great seasons. Harkless and Nicholson seemed to have good enough seasons to gain All-Rookie team consideration.

	Nope. Not so much.

The NBA announced its All-Rookie teams Tuesday and the Magic's rookies were left off. NBA Rookie of the Year and Portland guard Damian Lillard headlined the first team and the lone unanimous selection along with Washington's Bradley Beal, New Orleans' Anthony Davis (the top overall pick), Cleveland's Dion Waiters and Golden State's Harrison Barnes. The second team is Detroit's Andre Drummond, Toronto's Jonas Valanciunas, Charlotte's Michae...

NBA bloopers 2012-13 and Magic Social Media Awards

The season has wound down and the season recaps and highlights are coming out. I already did a collection of the year's highlights for the Magic in a full season recap shortly after the season ended.

Now the NBA is back at it with some of the lighter moments from the NBA season.

Yes, the Magic make a few appearances. Nothing too embarrassing though. Just the PB&J incident, Kyle O'Quinn hitting a Nets player in the head while trying to save a ball from going out of bounds and Glen Davis diving head first into the stands against the Cavaliers (a win, by the way).

	Enjoy:

	{youtube}nHbPoEenXlQ{/youtube}

Since we are talking frivolities, the NBA released its nominees for its Social Media Awards. No, there were not any Magic players included in the list. But it has me thinking, what were the social media moments of the Magic's season?

My memory probably is not as good as yours, so I am crowdsourcing for nominees for the Magic Social Media Awards.

What Went Wrong: Getting to the free throw line

Over the next few weeks Orlando Magic Daily will be taking a look at the things that went right and wrong this season as Orlando ended its season with its first Lottery season in six years.

When looking at the Magic roster at the beginning of the season, you could assume offense was going to be a problem. The roster did not have a single player who had been a first option offensively before this season. The key players were all nice role players, but hardly anyone you wanted to give the ball to and create offense.

There was no consistent low post threat, no consistent and proven dribble penetrator. There were certainly guys who could do it for short stretches, but no one who had sustained carrying a team for an 82-game season. Asking Jameer Nelson, Glen Davis and Hedo Turkoglu to carry the load was going to be asking a lot.

Still, someone was going to step up and into that role. Someone was going to have to drive this team's offense and help the team push forward, cr...

Stan Van Gundy Would Be Strong Choice to Coach Hawks, But Not Because of History With Dwight Howard

As far as coaches go, the Hawks could do a lot worse than Stan Van Gundy.
League-wide appreciation for Van Gundy is no secret. His candid demeanor endears him to reporters and most players, while his sturdy grasp of X’s and O’s helped make a deeply flawed Orlando Magic squad into a perennial Eastern Conference contender. With the Hawks expected to let go of coach Larry Drew, it makes sense that Van Gundy reportedly would be at the top of their list as Drew’s replacement.
There is just one detail of the Hawks’ interest that seems, well, weird.
“The Hawks plan to make a hard push for free-agent center Dwight Howard on July 1,” Yahoo! Sports’ Adrian Wojnarowski reported Friday, “and there’s some belief that Van Gundy could actually turn out to be a benefit in recruiting Howard back to his hometown.”
Er, what? Howard initiated Van Gundy’s ouster from Orlando, culminating in an incredibly awkward interview during practice toward the end of both of their tenures with the Magic. That story...

Hawks eye Stan Van Gundy

via Yahoo NBA

Stan Van Gundy is one of the biggest names in the coaching market. It was never a question that he will find himself on an NBA bench sometime soon. Despite an unceremonious exit from the Orlando Magic involving their superstar, Dwight Howard, there is a high respect for SVG’s expertise. It seemed inevitable that their two names will be intertwined, and some teams have shied away from hiring SVG as they want to make a push for Howard, who also becomes a free agent in the summer. The Atlanta Hawks, a known Howard suitor and his hometown team, are considering the opposite route, using SVG as a bargaining chip for Howard.
per Yahoo NBA

General manager Danny Ferry has made Van Gundy his top target to replace Larry Drew, sources said.
There has been contact between Ferry and Van Gundy, but the two sides have yet to meet in person.

What Went Right: The Fans

Over the next few weeks Orlando Magic Daily will be taking a look at the things that went right and wrong this season as Orlando ended its season with its first Lottery season in six years.

The No. 6 has hung in the Orlando Arena and Amway Center rafters since 1990. It has always been a symbol for a passionate fan base in a small, but growing, town. There was a jersey retirement ceremony that second season after fans stuck by their new pro franchise through the hiccups and growing pains of an expansion year.

As many fan bases would, the interest has come and gone in the last 24 years with the team's success. When things are great, the O-Rena (or whatever the name on the building is) is rocking. Magic fans are some of the best in the league when the arena is full and engaged. That has not always been the case in the Amway Center.

This is not about in-game atmosphere though or the possibly late-arriving crowd that has plagued Orlando some since moving to the Amway Cent...

Trade to Orlando helped ignite Tobias Harris' season

ORLANDO, Fla. The NBA doesn't hand out awards based on what transpired during the final third of its regular season.

If it did, Tobias Harris would have been a prime candidate for Most Improved Player.

When the Orlando Magic acquired him and guards Beno Udrih and Doron Lamb in February from the Milwaukee Bucks, Harris wasn't even averaging five points a game in his second season as a pro. With rookies Maurice Harkless and Andrew Nicholson having become the Magic's starting forwards, the thought of another young player competing with them for minutes was likely not very high on their fans' wish list.

But all that dormant potential surfaced in a hurry. After Harris had 27 points and 10 rebounds off the bench against the Houston Rockets in only his fourth game with the Magic, it became clear he belonged.

Harris made his first start March 8 and ended up averaging more than 17 points and nine rebounds during the next 20 games. Those are the sort of numbers NBA followers might associate more wi

Magic, Pelicans open to trading their lottery winnings

The top overall pick in the NBA Draft has been traded only once on Draft night in the Lottery era. the Magic, a year after selecting Shaquille O'Neal with the top overall pick and lucking into the top pick after a 41-41 season that saw them tied for the final Playoff spot in the East, shipped Chris Webber to Golden State for a point guard named Anfernee Hardaway (and three first round picks). There have been other trades -- Philadelphia traded the top overall pick before the draft to Cleveland in 1986, allowing the Cavaliers to select Brad Daugherty -- however, trading the top pick in the Draft is extremely rare. This is supposed to be the ultimate prize. A reward for losing and a booster shot for franchises that need the most help. These are where your franchise players are supposed to come from. What to do in a weak draft then? With hardly anyone showing any excitement for top Draft prospects like Nerlens Noel, Ben McLemore and Victor Oladipo as a franchise game-change...

Maurice Harkless earns place in Magic's future

ORLANDO, Fla. When its over, many NBA rookies will admit the best thing about their first season is theyll never have to go through anything quite like that again.
Maurice Harkless understands the feeling. First came the stressful process of having to work out for prospective teams after playing only one season in college. Then he was drafted with the 15th pick of the first round by the Philadelphia 76ers but traded less than two months later to the Orlando Magic.
And after missing training camp and preseason while recovering from surgery to repair a sports hernia, he was thrust into being matched up against a cavalcade of all-stars including LeBron James, Kevin Durant, Carmelo Anthony and Paul Pierce. It all can be overwhelming to a rail-thin 19-year-old fresh out of St. Johns. But the progress he made since November is something both Harkless and the Magic can point to with pride.
Its crazy, he said. Its like night and day. I think it was just a level of confidence (and) being out there. I was coming straig

Recapping the Magic in NBA award voting

To little surprise, the Magic were left largely out of the running for many of the NBA awards passed out this year. Being the team with the worst record in the league, it was going to be pretty clear that the Magic would be largely ignored. These awards tend to go to players on teams with, say, winning records.

The winners were not surprises either. LeBron James was a near unanimous winner of the MVP award. Damian Lillard won Rookie of the Year. J.R. Smith was the league's Sixth Man of the Year, edging out Jamal Crawford. And Paul George won the league's Most Improved Player of the Year Award.

Except for Nikola Vucevic in the Most Improved Player race, the Magic had little hope of getting recognition in the awards races. And it turned out that would be the case.

Vucevic and Arron Afflalo were the only players to receive any votes in the NBA's awards season voting. J.J. Redick also received votes for Sixth Man of the Year.

Vucevic finished fourth in the ra...

What Went Wrong: Hedo Turkoglu

Over the next few weeks Orlando Magic Daily will be taking a look at the things that went right and wrong this season as Orlando ended its season with its first Lottery season in six years.

Hedo Turkoglu has had an incredible 13-year run in the NBA. Much of that has been with the Orlando Magic. He won Most Improved Player of the Year in Orlando. He raised his family in Orlando. He helped guide the Magic to the NBA Finals with strong performances and a legendary postseason.

All that seems so long ago. Turkoglu has largely disappointed -- whether he was in Toronto, Phoenix or back in Orlando -- following that Finals run in 2009. No season probably disappointed as much as this past one and it likely spelled the end for Turkoglu's career in the NBA. His second chance in Orlando might very well prove to be his last.

The pain for Turkoglu started on opening night when he broke his hand in the third quarter. Turkoglu was 3 for 4 from the floor with six points and two steals...

Veteran Nelson hoping to stick around with Magic

ORLANDO, Fla. In a sense, the career of Jameer Nelson has come full circle.

When he came to the Orlando Magic in 2004, they were coming off a season in which they finished with the worst record in the NBA. Nine years and a franchise-record 3,025 assists later, he again finds himself part of a team with the dubious distinction of holding the best odds of winning the leagues annual draft lottery.

The Magics 20-62 record serves as a lasting and painful reminder of a season that began with Nelson straining his right hamstring and groin and ended with him missing the final nine games because of a sprained right ankle.

Losing is tough. Nobody wants to lose, he said. Change is tough. And obviously the season, for me, didnt go the way I wanted it to go in terms of winning. But through it all, Ive had fun. Its just a new chapter in my career and my life.

With it being a virtual lock that the Magic will buy out whats left of the contract of Hedo Turkoglu, Nelson could be the only link to the team that reached the

Orlando Magic season review

ORLANDO, Fla. As a team with a first-year head coach and a first-year general manager that finished the NBA season with five first-year players, the Orlando Magic were certainly expected to go through some growing pains.

And to be sure, the bulk of the past four months were painful. As one of their rookies, backup center Kyle OQuinn, put it succinctly, if not quite elegantly: Losing sucks.

But the Magic would prefer to look beyond the 20-62 record and see ample reason to believe things will soon improve.

We feel good about how were positioned for the future, general manager Rob Hennigan said Wednesday after he and coach Jacque Vaughn held their end-of-season exit interviews. We feel good about the players we have. But every man knows we have a lot of work to do still. And were excited about that. We know we have a challenge ahead of us. We know we have to get better. We believe we will get better. And the group that we were able to establish this season is a real good starting point for us.

When the sea

Orlando, Fla. (April 15, 2013) In celebration of the Orlando Magics silver season, the team has unveiled a commemorative 25th Anniversary logo. This additional look celebrates the past, incorporates the present and previews the future. As the team and the Magic brand continues to grow, the logo meshes the original pinstripe jersey design with the Magics current iconic star ball secondary logo, building on the heritage and history of the Magic from its birth in 1989.
The Orlando Magic is an organization whose mission is for excellence both on and off the court. For 25 years the teams logo has represented that excellence.
