Photos: Oregon State Unveils State-Of-The-Art Basketball Practice Facility

Today was an exciting day for the Oregon State basketball program — after 355 days of construction, it was finally time for the grand opening of the new OSU Basketball Center — a practice facility for both the men’s and women’s teams. According to the school’s official athletic site, “The OSU Basketball Center is a 34,500-square-foot, four-story, $15 million structure that features two regulation basketball courts on the first and third floors along with locker rooms, satellite training and medical areas, and service and mechanical space. The second and fourth floors include coach and program staff offices that offer panoramic views of the basketball courts.” Here are a couple of photos from the unveiling, courtesy the Oregon State Men’s Basketball Twitter: The ribbon has been cut and the tours are starting.
Illini pick up PG transfer from BEAVERS

The Illini got one up on the Beavers tonight. Another point guard defects from the Pac 12 to the Big Ten. Oregon State transfer Ahmad Starks committed to the Illini and John Groce on Tuesday night. Starks is a native Chicagoan (Whitney Young H.S.) coming home to the state school. He could become eligible next season with a waiver.
Yes, Groce has the Illini program on a recruiting roll. At least certainly from a transfer perspective.

Starks left OSU to be closer to his ailing grandmother in Chicago. Starks averaged 10.4 points, 2.0 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.0 steals as a junior this past season, while also shooting 39% from beyond the arc. However, he does have some Demetri McCamey in him. By that I mean he’s a ball hog with poor shot selection. But he could give the Illini some much needed depth at the one behind Tracy Abrams.
If he’s not eligible next year than it’s Simeon Wolverines floor general Jaylon Tate taking over at PG2.
Starks is the 4th Illini transfer since the end of...

Illinois basketball: Illinois adds Oregon State transfer Ahmad Starks

Ahmad Starks finally made it official that he will be transferring from Oregon State University to Illinois.

ILL
— Ahmad Starks (@astarks3) May 28, 2013

Starks, a 5-foot-9 guard, averaged 10.4 points as a junior with the Beavers.

The Chicago native led OSU in the 3-point shooting, connecting on 64 of 162 (39.5 percent). He led the team in scoring in seven games.

Starks told Scott Powers, of ESPN Chicago, that he is making the jump to be closer to his ailing grandmother, and he is hoping to get a waiver for family hardship so he can begin playing next season.
As for his decision choosing Illinois, Starks told ESPN Chicago the following:

"It's the state school. It's always been big for me. I always liked watching it growing up, watching Dee Brown and those guys. I took a visit when Bruce Weber was the coach. I liked the situation there, and it didn't work out. Being close to home, the alumni situation, all of it is huge. They have a great fan base."

Burton wraps up special career

Joe Burton's sobs betrayed his menacing 295-pound frame and bright red Mohawk.

Big Joe, as he is known, is winding down his basketball career at Oregon State. Last Saturday, he played his final home game at Gill Coliseum. On Thursday night, he'll play in his last Civil War rivalry game against Oregon.

''Just the guys,'' the 6-foot-7 senior center said haltingly through tears when asked wat he will miss. ''I am going to miss the team and playing basketball with these guys.''

By season's end Burton likely will have surpassed 1,000 points in his career. He's already topped 700 rebounds and 300 assists, and would become the only Beavers player to hit all three marks.

But it's not really statistics that define Big Joe.

Burton grew up on the Soboba Indian Reservation in California. A member of the Luiseno tribe, he is the first Native American scholarship player in the Pac-12 since the league expanded in 1978. Ron Jones was the only other Native American to p

You may not be a massive Joe Burton fan, and may not even know who he is but you should realize that he is a trailblazer when it comes to posting up folks down low. The six foot seven forward/center for Oregon State may not be the tallest big man down low but he will use every advantage, including his weight, that he possibly can to fool you. Check out the move Joe dropped on Thursday night as we did a little over the head no-look bucket tossing. TRADEMARKED.

Overachievers and underachievers for Oregon State’s basketball team

Searching for Solace
It’s been a mediocre start to the season for the Oregon State Beavers‘ basketball team, and you can tell they are suffering from some post Jared Cunningham withdrawals.
What is there identity? Who’s the go-to scorer? Where is Cunningham’s replacement?
These are the questions that have been left unanswered most of the season, as different players have shown up, or disappeared, at numerous times throughout the beginning of this ’12-13 campaign.
Craig Robinson and the Beavers have had a tough start to Pac-12 play this year.
The Beavers were 10-4 in out of conference play, while preparing for the Pac-12 schedule to start, and underwhelmed as their weak schedule dragged on. An early win over Purdue, coupled with the close losses to Alabama and Kansas, seemed like ages ago once they took to the court for their Pac-12 opener against rival Oregon.
After dropping the opener to Oregon, and subsequent matchups against Arizona State and Arizona, the Oregon State Beavers are left scratching

Oregon State Beavers Basketball: Blockheads Unite

Lucy tells Charlie Brown not to worry. This time she will hold the football as he attempts to kick it. Chuck walks back excitedly. This time he is going to do it. It’s really going to happen this time. He revs up, speeds toward the kick and then right at go time … Lucy pulls the ball away. Charlie Brown goes flying and falls on his back. Splat. Duped again.

It is one of the iconic moments in Charlie Brown’s illustrious career as king of the blockheads. Sometimes a cartoon can feel like real life.

So why should I change my name to ol’Chuck? Why do I feel like a blockhead lately? Look no further than the Oregon State men’s basketball team. Every time they get close, it is as if Lucy is pulling the football right out from under me or us. Often it is difficult to aptly describe a team without seeing them in person. Before the holiday, my soft prediction for the Beavers this year had a bright outlook.

Devon Collier emerging as star for Beavs

Familiar face leading Beavers
The Oregon State Beavers are off to a fantastic start to the season, currently tied for fifth in the Pac-12 at 6-2. Their lone losses on the season were close games to Alabama (62-65) and Kansas (78-84).
OSU has a great group of athletes, and it’s by far Coach Robinson’s most talented bunch since he joined the program.
Despite losing star shooter Jared Cunningham to the NBA draft (led the Beavers in points per game in 2011), Oregon State has held the ship together. While that’s mostly been the work of a cohesive team, one young man continues to shine.
Devon Collier continues to lead the way for the OSU (Photo: Jason DeCrow / AP)
That’s junior forward Devon Collier.
He may not be the team’s best scorer, or rebounder, but he’s certainly the team’s best player.
On the season, Collier is averaging 14.3 points and 6.1 rebounds per game, ranking second and third on the team, respectively. He’s second on the team in both steals per game (1.4) and total blocks (seven).

Devon Collier had 23 points as Oregon State overcame a listless first half to defeat the Vikings 79-74 on Wednesday night.

Joe Burton added 20 points and seven rebounds for the Beavers (6-2), who became the first Pac-12 team to play at the 1,500-seat Peter W. Stott Center on the Vikings' downtown Portland campus.

The Beavers trailed for most of the first half before pulling away to lead by as many as 14 points in the second - and holding off a late rally that got the Vikings within five points.

The Vikings (1-5) have lost five straight after winning their opener against the Pacific (Ore.) Boxers back on Nov. 9. Portland's losses before the Beavers all came on the road.

The Beavers have won four of their last five games, including last Saturday's 85-54 victory over Grambling State. Their lone loss in the stretch was at then-No. 10 Kansas, 84-78.

Pac 12 Preview: Oregon State Beavers strengths and weaknesses

Beavers out to prove something
With what is arguably Craig Robinson’s deepest batch of players in his tenure, the Oregon State Beavers look to rejoin the ranks of the top programs in the Pac-12.
The deck is definitely stacked against them, but people said the same thing about the football program.
And look how well those guys are doing.
With a deep and diverse roster, here are some of the biggest strengths and weakness for the Beavers in the 2012/13 hoops season.
Strengths:
1. Scoring
Despite losing their leader scorer in Jared Cunningham (17.9 ppg), this team shouldn’t miss a beat on scoring.
The team has been worked all preseason on expanding their scoring abilities. Devon Collier has developed his mid-range game, while Joe Burton is learning to better attack the rim.
With Eric Moreland working the inside game, the Beavers can score in just about every way imaginable. And that’s just with their front court.
The guard tandem of Ahmad Starks and Roberto Nelson expects to be slower, but more dynamic, tha

G Jared Cunningham declares for draft

Oregon State guard Jared Cunningham is skipping his senior season and entering the NBA draft.

Cunningham leaves the Beavers ranked 13th on the school's career scoring list with 1,271 points and second in steals with 219.

He was chosen to the All-Pac-12 team this past season, when he averaged 17.9 points and 3.8 rebounds for the Beavers (21-15). He had 91 steals, matching Gary Payton's mark as a junior.

The Oakland, Calif., native announced his decision Monday at a news conference with Oregon State coach Craig Robinson.

The NBA draft is June 28.

Robinson has OSU out to surprising start

When head coach Craig Robinson arrived at Oregon State four years ago, he led the Beavers to an 18-18 record which was the best season OSU had seen since the 1989-90 season.

Now with a team full of players that he has personally recruited, Robinson has led the 2011-12 squad to one of the best starts in program history.

"We are still on the steep side of the learning curve from changing our identity from a defensive standpoint," assessed Robinson. "But the overall effort and understanding is there."

Despite the growing pains, that effort is already translating into tangible results, especially on offense.

Currently at 10-4, the Beavers rank eighth in the nation in scoring with 81.8 points per game. This is the first time OSU has led the Pac-12 in this category since recording statistics began in 1959. They are fourth in the nation in steals averaging 10.2 points per game and seventh in assists with 17.6 per game. Oregon State has already tied a school record by scoring 90 or more poi

Oregon State’s Jared Cunningham has one of the best dunks of the year: Reverse alley oop

If you haven’t already get to know the name Jared Cunningham. The Oregon State star is averaging 17.2 points per game this season and is one of the most athletic players in the country.
Last night Oregon State defeated Howard 93-72 and in that game Cunningham had one of the best dunks so far in this college basketball season.
The Beavers point guard Ahamd Starks passed to Joe Burton at mid court, who then dribbled to the top of the key. From there Burton threw a lob pass to Cunningham who threw down a reverse alley oop dunk. Cunningham made it look so easy and effortless.
The Beavers are off to a 8 and 2 start. Could they make the tournament, I think they can mainly because the Pac 12 is so weak.
So far this season Cunningham’s and UConn’s Jermey Lamb’s are my favorite dunks of this college basketball season.
Here is video of the dunk.

Video: Ore. St. player's sick reverse alley-oop

We all know the fast break is the best way to beat full-court pressure. The most exciting way to beat full-court pressure is to finish the play on the other end with a dunk. It’s even more exciting when that dunk happens to come in the form of an alley-oop. As far as taking the [...]
