Montana hoops lands Washington transfer

Montana men's basketball coach Wayne Tinkle has announced the signing of 6-foot-8 forward Martin Breunig (BROY'-nig), who is transferring from the University of Washington.

Breunig, who is originally from Germany, will sit out next year due to NCAA transfer rules.

Breunig played in 21 games as a freshman at Washington, but saw action in just nine games and scored one point as a sophomore. He competed on the German Under 18 national team at the FIBA European Championships in Lithuania in 2010.

Predicting the 2013/14 Washington Huskies basketball starting five

Projected starters for next season.
In-between transfers, graduates, and incoming recruits, University of Washington Men’s basketball’s starting squad next year is up in the air.
Here’s the most likely starting five for next year, with the potential challenger at each position.
Point Guard
Starter: Andrew Andrews
Challenger: Nigel Williams-Goss
Andrew Andrews gets the nod over incoming freshman Nigel Williams-Goss (Photo: Google)
This was a tough pick, but redshirt sophomore Andrew Andrews gets the nod over incoming freshman Nigel Williams-Goss.
After a redshirt year, Andrews put up around eight points, two assists and three rebounds in around 25 minutes a game in 2012-2013. The Oregon product has a tight handle and is cat-quick.
Williams-Goss is the highest profile recruit Washington is bringing in, and he will see major minute; but I think it is unlikely Lorenzo Romar starts a true freshman at point guard over a returner.
Williams-Goss has size, smarts and scoring ability. He is a high-character

C.J. Wilcox to return to Washington

Washington leading scorer C.J. Wilcox has bypassed a chance to enter the NBA draft and will return for his senior season.

The school made the announcement on Thursday. Many draft projections had Wilcox being taken in the second round.

Wilcox led the Huskies averaging 16.8 points per game, good for sixth in the Pac-12. He was a second-team all-Pac-12 selection and played most of the conference season while battling a foot injury. He topped 20 points in 14 games and was the Huskies' leading scorer in 22 of their 34 games.

Wilcox's return means the Huskies will lose only three starters off their squad that went 18-16 and lost in the first-round of the NIT to BYU.

Romar advises Wilcox on impending decision

Even though Washington's main signing day for men's basketball started Wednesday, junior guard C.J. Wilcox has 12 more days to make up his mind before choosing his college and pro fate. College players are supposed to decide by April 16th - the day before signing day - but the NCAA allows pro prospects the ability to wait until the NBA's April 28th deadline for early entry into this year's draft.

Washington adds pair to 2013-14 recruiting class

Washington has added high school guard Jahmel Taylor and junior college transfer Mike Anderson after they signed their national letters of intent to play basketball for the Huskies.

Washington coach Lorenzo Romar announced the signings on Wednesday. The two join an incoming class that includes McDonald's All-American Nigel Williams-Goss, Darin Johnson and college transfers Perris Blackwell and Gilles Dierickx.

Taylor, a 5-foot-11 guard, helped lead Pacific Hills High in West Hollywood, Calif., to the California Division IV state title. He averaged 22.7 points, 6.2 rebounds and 4.7 assists this past season.

Anderson played last season at Moberly Area Community College in Missouri. He was ranked as one of the top 50 junior college prospects in the country and averaged 17.2 points and 10 rebounds last season.

Romar: No contact with UCLA about job

Washington coach Lorenzo Romar says he's had no contact from UCLA regarding the Bruins' head coaching position.

Romar was asked about the UCLA job Monday during his season-ending news conference. Romar said it's understandable his name gets brought up with the UCLA vacancy.

Romar is a Southern California native who worked as an assistant at UCLA from 1992-96, including the Bruins' 1995 national championship season.

But Romar said, ''I've said I don't know how many times, Washington wants me and I want to be here.''

Romar just completed his 11th season as Washington's head coach.

Romar added that reserve forward Martin Breunig will transfer from the school and junior guard C.J. Wilcox has submitted paperwork to the NBA draft advisory committee to evaluate his draft prospects if he left early.

Scott Suggs scored 18 points and redshirt freshman Jernard Jarreau added a career-high 12 to lead Washington to a 65-57 win over USC on Wednesday night.

Jarreau and the Huskies (17-13, 9-8 Pac-12) combined to make 17 consecutive free throws over the final 17:40, following five consecutive misses to start the game.

Andrew Andrews scored five of his seven points in the final 2:07. Suggs scored 11 of his 18 points after halftime, making 8 of 13 shots for the game.

Washington won its third straight game after losing eight of its previous 10.

Dewayne Dedmon had 18 points for USC, which was leading 41-39 when he collected his fourth foul and came out of the game with 11:51 remaining. Washington went on to score nine unanswered points and never trailed again.

The Trojans (14-16, 9-8) shot just 37.5 percent from the field for the game.

Overachievers and underachievers for Washington’s basketball team

Signs of rebuild are showing
The University of Washington men’s basketball team could be called a lot of things this year, but one thing they are not, is consistent.
Sitting at 12-8, the Dawgs were looking to be on a decent pace for a top half of the conference finish, until it all fell apart against the Utes.
It only gets harder from here, and their 4-3 conference record as it stands right now is looking more like where this team should be.
So, with that in mind, I want to take a look at some overachieving players, and even an underachieving player to boot.
CJ Wilcox
There were two players who needed to step it up this year after the departures of Tony Wroten and Terrence Ross.
One of those was CJ Wilcox.
So far, Wilcox has held up his side of the bargain, leading the Huskies in scoring in 14 of their 20 games so far this season, including a team high 28 in the loss to powerhouse Ohio State.
A swing man by nature, Wilcox has the best pure shot on this young team.
He has single handily kept this team as goo

2012/13 Washington Huskies basketball first month recap

Trouble Brewing?
To say the Washington Huskies have had a lackluster start to their 2012/2013 basketball season would be an understatement.
Coming off of a year that saw them win the Pac-12 Conference (though they would be eliminated in Round 1 of the Pac-12 Tournament and fall outside of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament), many believed the Huskies would be at least as talented as they were last season. And though there is still plenty of basketball to play (conference play has yet to start), early struggles this season have been rather disheartening for many Husky fans across the Northwest.
Should Washington continue their lackluster and inconsistent play throughout the rest of the season, it’s hard to imagine the Huskies being in the thick of things when it comes to selecting teams for the 2013 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament. Washington currently finds themselves with a record of 8-4, their most defining moment coming against Seattle University when they kept bragging rights to the City of Seatt

UW Terrence Ross declares for NBA Draft

Star sophmore Terrence Ross has hired an agent and has declared for the NBA Draft. Speculation has been swirling as to whether or not Ross and Tony Wroten would go pro. Ross is gone. The 6-6 guard shot 51.8 percent from the field during the season. He ranked among Pac-12 leaders in eight categories: points (16.4, 4th), rebounds (6.4, 6th), offensive rebounds (5.1, 3rd), free throw percentage (.766, 11th), steals (1.3, 12th), three-point field goal percentage makes (.371, 14th) and blocks (0.9, 13th). Many say he could be a lottery pick and we'll all find out soon enough. What do you think of Ross' decision to go pro? Where do you think he lands in the draft? ESPN's Chad Ford ranks Ross 20th on his top 100 NBA list. Draft Express projects he'll be the No. 18 pick, while ESPN and NBADraft.net believe he'll be taken at No. 19.

The many roles of Darnell Gant

Darnell Gant's role on the Washington Huskies basketball team is to come off of the bench and be active. Sometimes.

He's almost like a seventh starter for head coach Lorenzo Romar.

If Gant was called on to fill a starter's role, he could, already having made 70 career starts, including 14 this season.

Off of the court, he has the capacity to take on other roles as well. Gant, a Crenshaw High grad, manned the role of musician at church growing up in Los Angeles, playing the piano, organ, and drums.

He's a drama major, who last spring took on the role of Starveling in the university's production of "Midsummer Night's Dream."

He tackled it with the same ferocity he does when he takes to the hardwood.

"I felt like it was kind of the same," said Gant comparing the preparation of acting to basketball. "For acting I felt it was just going over your lines. I started to get my fellow actors to start warming up for the play just like I warm up for a game get

UW's Gaddy has funny moment during presser

At a Tuesday presser, University of Washington junior point guard Abdul Gaddy was asked if he and fellow guard Tony Wroten have done anything special to get Terrence Ross going on offense. Ross has averaged 16 points through three Washington games. Gaddy and Wroten are averaging 5.7 and 4.3 assists thus far. You won't hear the question, but the clip starts with Gaddy's answer. Cue Michael Scott. We appreciate Gaddy recovering and translating his first line into basketball terms even though he was still ready to lose it.
