NBA Draft Blog Interview with Brock Motum

The adjustment to playing college basketball can be difficult under normal circumstances. Between adjusting to the college culture as well as differences in the game, challenges are plenty. Now add doing all that when coming from another country. Brock Motum not only dealt with the changes coming to Washington State from Australia, but he thrived.

Washington State provided Motum his chance to improve his basketball game, but in many ways he was prepared for the challenge. “In Australia, the only major differences were a shorter shot clock and the game wasn’t as physical,” Motum explained. “Having played in the World Championships, each country had a different style of play, so I was used to preparing for different things.”

Motum has other methods of learning more about the American game. “I watched a lot of the games on TV and I would try to learn what I saw and try it myself,” said Motum. “The speed of the game and intensity was different, and it ...

WASHINGTON STATE’S signing today of junior college point guard Danny Lawhorn is far more than meets the eye. His joining the team instantly improves the offensive output of DaVonte Lacy, Royce Woolridge, Que Johnson, Dexter Kernich-Drew, Ikenna Iroegbu and Brett Boese.

WSU NOTEBOOK: Motum & Cougs make history

BROCK MOTUM AND the Washington State Cougars made basketball history this season. By repeating as the Pacific-12 Conference scoring champion, Motum – combined with Klay Thompson in 2010-11 – made the Cougars the first team to produce three consecutive scoring champions since the conference began recognizing the leading scorer as the player with the most points per game in all games in 1974-75.

2013 Pac 12 Tournament preview: Washington State Cougars

Cougs enter tourney on promising streak
One week ago, the Washington State Cougars were riding a 9-game losing streak and all hope was seemingly loss. However, now we are here at season’s end on a 2-game winning streak – the longest of the season in conference play – and budding the possibility of maybe having somewhat of a chance in the Pac 12 tournament.
March 6th the 1 seed UCLA Bruins traveled to Pullman to embark on what was thought to be a slaughter. The Cougars didn’t get the memo, as they came bursting out of the gates building an early lead and holding it all game long.
It was the biggest win of the season for the Cougs. Not only because it was against #23 UCLA, but it was with a team pieced together by scotch tape.
DaVonte Lacy and Mike Ladd were both out due to knee injuries – Lacy for the season. Starting in their place were Dexter Kernich-Drew and Will DiIorio, both capable players but nowhere near the offensive efficiency. Not to mention the thinning of the bench.

Brock Motum scored 31 points and Royce Woolridge added 25 as Washington State closed out the regular season by crushing USC 76-51 on Saturday.

Woolridge hit five 3-pointers and Motum three, helping the Cougars (13-18, 4-14 Pac-12) to their first winning streak in conference play this season with a sweep of the Los Angeles schools. Washington State defeated UCLA on Wednesday.

T.J. Terrell had 18 points for the Trojans (14-17, 9-9). He was the only player in double figures for USC, as it struggled from the field (19 for 56) and behind the arc (4 for 24).

Washington State never trailed and put the game out of reach when Woolridge hit four consecutive 3-pointers to make the score 66-46 with 4:42 remaining.

WSU head coach Ken Bone is on the “Hot Seat”

The Last-place Cougars Continue to Heat Bone’s Seat
As the Washington St. Cougars continue to plummet into the depths of Pac-12 insignificance, Ken Bone and his 24-44 Pac-10/12 record inch closer and closer to the inevitable—termination.
At the beginning of the season, Washington St. Athletic Director Bill Moos claimed that he expected the basketball program to compete in the mid-to-upper levels of the division. Three months into the year, the Cougars stand at 11-16 (2-12 in Pac 12), and are in dead last.
All season long, the Cougars have followed a similar blueprint—come out firing in the first half, build a second-half lead and then hand it right back as they falter down the stretch.
The Cougars have blown 11 second-half leads this season.
Through these issues, one can come to a few conclusions. It could be the team simply not having the difference makers to make the necessary plays in the clutch, or the opposing coaching staff puts together more efficient adjustments in the game plan at halftime

2013 Washington St. Cougars Basketball: Month in review

Cougs Stand at 11-9
After the Washington State Cougars stumbled into Pac-12 play, they find themselves at No. 10 in the conference. They have garnered a reputation for falling apart in the final minutes, giving up second-half leads on a regular basis. If the game were shortened to 35 minutes, the Cougs could very well be 19-1 — the Kansas blow out was over from the start.
But it turns out they are 40 minute contests. Who knew? Apparently not the Cougars.
The games have been intense, stressful, competitive, and all of the other anxiety-producing emotions under the sun. Yet the Cougars have not come out victoriously very often. The Cougars are coming off of a nail-biting win over Oregon State. Hopefully this will boost them into a possible in-conference winning streak.
These are the individual performances that have stuck out so far:
Pac-12 Performer
While Brock Motum is still leading the team in points per game (18.9) and rebounds (6.6) he has been outperformed in Pac-12 play by his teammate, Mike Ladd.

Pac 12 Preview: Washington St. Cougars strengths and weaknesses

Improved Perimeter Play Gives Cougss Weapons
The Washington St. Cougars began their season with a 88-69 victory over Eastern Washington last Saturday. While the Cougars were the favored team in the match up, the way the victory came about was rather uplifting.
Washington St.’s biggest knocks coming into the season were rebounding, free-throw shooting and defense in front court.
The vast improvements came in the rebounding category, where Brock Motum hauled in 10 and DJ Shelton added 12 of his own, along with 5 more from Mike Ladd and Junior Longrus.
With a size advantage over the Eastern Eagles, the output was expected from the larger Cougar group. It was nevertheless encouraging to see proper box-outs and a team-wide swarm to the boards on every shot attempt.
After the convincing victory there is optimism in the young season.
Let’s identify what the Cougars do well, and what needs to be improved for a successful 2012-2013 campaign.

Pac-12 leading scorer Motum back at Washington St

The cupboard isn't completely bare for Washington State, not with Pac-12 leading scorer Brock Motum returning for his senior year.

But the Cougars have few other returning players with experience.

Guard Davonte Lacy is the only other starter back, and only Mike Ladd and D.J. Shelton saw any significant playing time last season.

Coach Ken Bone sees the lack of experience as an opportunity, not as a problem.

''I've been in this situation before over the years, where you are kind of looked at as an underdog, and you don't have this and you don't have that,'' Bone said. ''A lot of times those are the groups that pull together as a team and maximize their talent.''

Chief among things the Cougars don't have is a point guard, after senior Reggie Moore was recently kicked off the team for an unspecified violation of team rules. Moore, a three-year starter, was the second-leading returning scorer at 10.2 points per game and led the Pac-12 with 5.2 assists per ga

Reggie Moore’s dissmissal adds more doubt to Cougars’ season

Adding Salt to the Wounds of Cougar Sports
Starting point guard Reggie Moore was dismissed from the Washington State Cougars basketball team Monday due to a violation of team rules.

Head coach Ken Bone has not been the sternest of coaches in the past.

Both Moore and starting forward Deangelo Casto had been caught with marijuana violations in the past, each of which ended up in single-game suspensions.
Debates arose whether Bone was establishing minor punishments because of the individuals’ importance to the team. Some may say his spine was that of a jelly fish, nevertheless he suspended both.
The fact of the matter is, Moore has dealt with previous issues with the law, and his production did not suffice to the violations at hand.
After a PAC-10 All-Freshman year performance averaging 12.7 points and 4.2 assists per game, Reggie’s efficiency only went south averaging 9.1 points and 3.4 assists his sophomore year, and 10.2 points with 5.2 assists his junior year.
His stats did not tend to fluctua

Evaluating Washington State without Reggie Moore

Just last week I put together a list of the top-5 point guards in the Pac-12, and well, it looks like I need a new No. 5 since Washington State's Reggie Moore was kicked off the team. Still - as a strictly pass first point guard - Moore was very very good.
The Cougs were 7-11 in the conference last season but returned three starters including Brock Motum and his 18 points a game. Now they're down to two returning starters, and essentially no experienced point guards. Moore played 82.2% of the minutes last season.
This follows on the heels of 4* recruit DeMarquise Johnson being ruled ineligible for the season as a partial qualifier.
It now looks like they'll have to turn to a combination of DaVonte Lacy, senior Mike Ladd, and transfer Royce Woolridge. None of these players are pure point guards.
So, what had been a season...

Report: Alleged pot dealer supplied Kansas Jayhawks basketball players

An Overland Park, Kan., man allegedly supplied marijuana to a number of basketball players on the 2010-2011 Kansas Jayhawks team, a federal prosecutor said.
Samuel Villeareal, 32, is one of 25 defendants charged in U.S. District Court with conspiring to distribute more than 1,000 kilograms of “high-grade” marijuana in Johnson and Douglas counties.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Terra Morehead said authorities seized $11,000 and an iPhone when they searched Villeareal’s house in May 2011. She said Villeareal supplied marijuana to “a number of Kansas University basketball players from the 2010-2011 season.”
