With the sea of commentary regarding the growing rift between bloggers and the professional media, most notably the recent dust-up as a result of Will Leitch's appearance on Costas Now, it occurred to me the voices disparaging bloggers were coming from journalists who can be considered the "old guard."

Tennessee Stud had Cancer

It was discoverd in 2007 during the NCAA tournament that Chris Lofton, Senior Guard(then Junior) from Tennesse was diagnosised with Testicular Cancer. But the way he found out, was the hard part. After taking a drug test and failing it he was told by the doctor that he has a tumor that may be cancerous. Coach Bruce Pearl was on the Jim Rome Is Burning Radio Show today talking about this with Jim. He said they looked at the Lance Armstrong story and said that Chris just wasn't ready for that kind of pressure. Chris Lofton did have the cancerous tumor removed, just less than one week after the season-ending loss to Ohio State in 2007. To have played with this illness and still have the Senior seson Chris had is remarkable. Chris is projected to be drafted into the NBA in the incoming draft. Let's just hope that the cancer stays away.

Chris Lofton

Today it was reported that Chris Lofton, a point guard for the Tennessee Volunteers, had a testicular cancer scare before this last season. I don't know the whole story so I'm not going to act like I know what I'm talking about but this is a great story. Lofton and his coach, Bruce Pearl, decided that they would wait until after the season to reveal that this happened. Apparently Lofton was not ready to deal with the issue like Lance Armstrong did, and that's to be expected. Lofton and Pearl made the right decision, especially since he plays in a game where the crowds of other home teams will ridicule you for anything, no matter how serious the situation. This is definitely a testement to how hard Lofton works and how tough he really is. Nobody knows what kind of pro he's going to be, but I can confidentally say that this will definitely help his draft status. Every team could use a player like Lofton. He's a tough kid who plays with all of his heart every night. Kudos to Chris Lofton. This is a great story.

Former Tennessee guard fails drug test, finds out he has a tumor

Former Tennessee guard Chris Lofton failed a drug test during the 2007 NCAA Tournament. But it turned out to be a blessing in disguise. The test revealed that he had a tumor and he underwent testicular cancer treatment, having surgery in March 2007 and radiation surgery for four weeks in May. He is now cancer-free. The information was kept private during the 2007-08 college basketball season.
