Utah St. 63, San Jose St. 36

Spencer Butterfield had 22 points and 10 rebounds, both game highs, for his fifth straight double-double and Utah State routed San Jose State 63-36 Friday night.

Butterfield was 9 for 11 from the field for the Aggies (17-5, 8-4 WAC), who have beaten the Spartans 12 straight times since 2008.

Jarred Shaw and Marcel Davis scored 12 points apiece for Utah State, which has won three in a row, all on the road.

D.J. Brown led San Jose State with 16 points. Chris Cunningham had 10 points and nine rebounds but San Jose State still had its season low in points.

The Spartans (9-14, 3-9) have lost eight in a row since beating independent New Orleans on Jan. 8. That was the last game James Kinney, SJSU's leading scorer, played in before being suspended for violating team policies. Kinney was averaging 20 points per game.

Utah St. 68, Seattle 46

Jared Shaw scored 16 points and Utah State held Seattle to 31 percent shooting in a 68-46 victory Saturday night.

Spencer Butterfield added 13 points and 11 rebounds for the Aggies (16-5, 7-4 Western Athletic), who outrebounded Seattle 44-25 and completed a sweep of the season series between the two teams. TeNale Roland had 12 points and Marcel Davis 11.

Chad Rasmussen led the Redhawks (7-14, 2-9) with 10 points. Seattle made just 18 of 58 shots overall and 2 of 20 from beyond the arc.

Shaw hit a layup with 7:10 left in the first half to cap a 10-2 run that put the Aggies ahead 22-13. Utah State extended the lead to 30-19 at halftime and kept it in double digits throughout the second half.

The Aggies are playing without leading scorer Preston Medlin (out 6-8 weeks with a fractured wrist) and starter Kyisean Reed (out with a season-ending torn ACL).

Utah State's Berger getting stronger

Utah State forward Danny Berger ran a mile the other day then did some stairs afterward. Not unusual for an athlete, except that he did it just six weeks after he nearly died after collapsing on the basketball court.

Now, unless Berger takes his shirt off to reveal where a defibrillator has been implanted in his chest, it's hard to differentiate him from most other 22-year-old college athletes.

''I feel good,'' Berger said after watching his Utah State teammates practice late Tuesday during a 13-game winning streak. ''The doctor said everything looks great. I look normal.''

While previously hopeful he would play again this season, he is resigned that won't happen. But he looks forward to an extra year of eligibility. This was to be his junior season; now he'll have two seasons left.

''I just try to think about the long run,'' said Berger, who was revived after going into cardiac arrest on Dec. 4. ''I have another year. I'll be more ma

Marcel Davis scored 17 points and Jarred Shaw scored 12 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to pace Utah State to a 69-63 victory over Utah Valley on Saturday night.

The lead changed hands 10 times, most of those in the first half, before Utah State (6-1) took control.

Utah State shot 54.7 percent from the floor, had a 35-20 rebounding advantage and its bench outscored Utah Valley (5-7) 17-0.

Utah Valley had four men score in double figures. They were Alfonzo Hubbard and Holton Hunsaker with 17, Nick Thompson with 13 and Jason Johnson with 10.

Utah State player grateful, tired

A tired but grateful Danny Berger called it a ''miracle'' that he was back to watch his Utah State teammates play days after collapsing on the court and being revived by an assistant trainer.

Berger was released from a Salt Lake City area hospital Saturday and back in Logan, flanked by the trainer credited with saving his life and a father who thought the worst upon receiving word of Tuesday's life-threatening incident while driving in the middle of the Nevada desert.

''I immediately thought Hank Gathers because I'm from there,'' Berger's father, Brian, said about the Loyola Marymount star who collapsed and died at age 23 in 1990 during a West Coast Conference Tournament game because of a heart-muscle disorder.

''I didn't know what to think.''

He quipped that Nevada state troopers let him get away with driving 110 mph as he made his way through the desert toward Utah, where he was headed for the Aggies' game Wednesday night against Brigha

Utah State player in fair condition

Hospital officials say a Utah State basketball player who collapsed at practice has been moved out of the intensive care unit and upgraded to fair condition.

Intermountain Medical Center spokesman Jason Carlton says Danny Berger remains at the Salt Lake City-area hospital.

The 22-year-old Berger collapsed on the court during a practice Tuesday in Logan.

Longtime Utah State assistant athletic trainer Mike Williams is credited with saving Berger's life after Berger went into cardiac arrest. Williams helped Berger regain a heartbeat with the use of a defibrillator.

Utah State's game Wednesday night against Brigham Young was postponed. Saturday night's contest against Western Oregon is expected to be played as scheduled in Logan.

A Utah State basketball player who collapsed at practice and stopped breathing remains in critical condition.

Intermountain Medical Center spokesman Jess Gomez says Danny Berger is in critical condition Wednesday morning at the hospital in Murray.

Season Predictions: WAC Basketball

1. Utah State. Preston Medlin. Preston Medlin. Preston Medlin. Who had the highest offensive rating in the WAC last year? I'll give you a hint - it was Preston Medlin. After a quiet freshman year, Medlin redshirted for a season and by all appearances that was a great decision. He still needs to get stronger and understand his roll on defense, but he made 43% of his threes, 58% of his twos, and 80% from the line. JUCO transfer TeNale Roland should be able to step in at the point, and the Aggies have a couple solid 4s in Kyisean Reed and Ben Clifford, and two bigs in Jarred Shaw (6-10, Oklahoma State) and Matt Lopez (6-11, La Salle - won't be eligible until after the fall semester). 2. Denver. WAC newcomer Denver (from the Sun Belt) lost one of their stars when Brian Stafford graduated, but they return stat-stuffing junior Chris Udofia. Udofia led the team in scoring (tied with Stafford), rebounding, assists and blocks. He gets to the line. He shot 62% on twos. He was the Su...

Utah St. 61, Hawaii 60

Morgan Grim hit the go-ahead layup with seven seconds remaining as Utah State beat Hawaii 61-60 on Saturday night.

Brockeith Pane scored 20 points and Preston Medlin added 19 for the Aggies (17-14, 8-6 Western Athletic), who clinched the No. 4 seed in the conference tournament in Las Vegas and will play fifth-seeded Louisiana Tech on Thursday.

On his game-deciding basket, Grim dribbled into the lane, eluded a Hawaii defender and banked in a short shot.

The Rainbow Warriors (15-15, 6-8) turned the ball over on their final possession. Josten Thomas had 19 points to lead Hawaii, which has lost five straight and will be the No. 6 seed, facing third-seeded Idaho in the first round.

Utah State tied it at 59-59 on Medlin's baseline jumper with 59 seconds remaining. Thomas hit a free throw with 37 seconds left to put Hawaii up one.

Video: NMSU player's amazing defensive play

This defensive play from Saturday's Utah State-New Mexico State game is nothing short of incredible. Hernst Laroche, a senior guard for NMSU, was guarding Utah State's Preston Medlin when he tripped over USU forward Kyisean Reed who was setting a pick at half court. After hitting the deck, Laroche, all in one motion, pulled off an army roll and sprung back up to his feet to block Medlin's jump shot.Laroche then gained control of the ball and took it down the floor for a contested layup. Some call it wherewithal. Others might call it a hustle play. Video game makers call it defensive awareness. I'll let you decide what to call it. But anyway you slice it, it'll be one of the best defensive plays you'll see on the hardwood this season. New Mexico State won the game 80-69.

See, incredible.

Utah St. 78, Seattle 53

Preston Medlin scored 22 points to lead Utah State past Seattle 78-53 on Saturday night.

Danny Berger scored 11 points and grabbed seven rebounds for the Aggies (5-5), and Kyisean Reed added 13 points.

The visiting Redhawks (2-7) were led by Prince Obasi and Sterling Carter, who each scored eight points. Carter also led Seattle with seven rebounds.

Seattle outrebounded USU 43-35, but shot only 27 percent from the field the second half and only 13 percent from the 3-point line for the game.

The Aggies' 12-5 run to open the second half broke open the game. They broke a periodic full-court press employed by the Redhawks for several easy buckets, including a dunk by Berger. Utah State had six steals and 18 points off turnovers in the game.

Utah State scored 28 points from the free-throw line, while the Redhawks were 12 of 18 from the line.
