Going...Going...Gone: Mike Trout Blasts Longest Home Run of his Career

When you do something crazy like become the youngest player in the history of the American League to hit for the cycle--like Los Angeles Angels slugger Mike Trout--following that up with something comparable is pretty tough to do.

Mike Trout did his best to follow up his historic game and didn't do a bad job of it smacking the ball 463 feet making it the longest home run of his young career.

Fan runs onto field at Royals-Angels game, steals rosin bag, makes cop eat dirt (Video)

A fan ran onto the field at Kauffman Stadium during the middle of the eighth inning in a game between the Los Angeles Angels and Kansas City Royals, providing some of the best excitement of the night. Angels reliever Michael Kohn had an 0-2 count on Alcides Escobar in the bottom of the eighth when a fan wearing a Royals jersey ran onto the field. The fan ran right behind the pitching mound, slid onto the dirt, snagged the rosin bag, got up, and scampered away. The dude had a police officer on his tail and managed to shake the cop with a surprise slide onto the mound. The unsuspecting cop tripped and ate it on the mound, allowing the fan to momentarily break free while waving around his prized souvenir. The guy was just absolutely playing to the crowd too. He was showboating and everything after flying through capture the flag style. Alas, the fan was eventually tackled and handcuffed by police, but not before taking them on a wild ride. Cop goes down as fan slides in for the bag...

It seemed like a reasonable enough question posed during the Fox Sports Kansas City broadcast of the Royals-Angels game Thursday night—which young player would you like to start a franchise with? Simple right? The four players to choose from are exactly who you think would be mentioned in a conversation of this ilk—heck, you could probably name all four youngsters from memory and the teams they currently play for—so take a look at this graphic from the game and see if you can spot anything wrong… Let’s see… Bryce Hunter’s real name is Bryce Harper, and despite the Tigers logo beside his head, still plays for the Nationals Unless he’s going by an alias, Matt Harvey is not named Matt Jones, and at last check, does not pitch for the Orioles Manny Machado does play for the O’s, and not the White Sox as the logo beside his Baltimore cap might lead you to believe Mike Trout is still with the Angels, and not a member of the Yankees (yet) Surprisingly, all the stats are correct prior to ...

Mike Trout hits 463-foot home run, longest of his career (Video)

Your browser does not support iframes.
Mike Trout absolutely crushed a home run off Ervin Santana in the first inning of the Los Angeles Angels-Kansas City Royals game on Thursday night.
The home run came on a 93-mph 0-1 fastball from Santana, his former teammate. The pitch was low in the zone and Trout just golfed it out of the park to dead center, where it cleared the green hitters’ screen and hit off the base of the scoreboard.
The homer was originally estimated to have gone 433 feet, but that seemed conservative considering the ball cleared the green area above the fence. The Royals later said the home run traveled 463 feet, which seemed much more accurate.
Trout’s previous career longest home run was 445 feet last August, according to ESPN Stats & Info.
Trout has heated up after having just an average first month of the season. He entered Thursday’s game batting .351/.437/.770 for May, with seven home runs and five stolen bases. He added a homer and stolen base in the gam...

Jered Weaver to rejoin Angels next week

credit: getty images
Jered Weaver will return to the rotation of the Los Angeles Angels next week. Weaver has not pitched since April 7 due to an fractured left elbow.
Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Angels manager Mike Scioscia said that his right hander would rejoin the rotation as long as his bullpen session goes well later this week.
Weaver will return to the Angels without making any rehab starts. He did pitched a few extended spring training games and is on course to start Monday or Tuesday against the Dodgers.
Currently Weaver is 0-1 with a 4.91 ERA and a 1.36 WHIP after two starts.
News is not as promising for the Angels when it comes to Tommy Hanson. The Orange Country Register reports that Hanson is weeks away from returning to the rotation as he attempts to regain stamina. Hanson has been out since the death of his step brother.

Why the Pujols contract isn't as bad as you think

A lot of conversation these past two months have revolved around Albert Pujols and his declining performance. The man is a mess of injuries, pressure, and unfair media scrutiny. I recently wrote about how all this could be worked through in an article from last week. One of the talking points was sticking Pujols in the DH spot, indefinitely. This is something we all knew would happen somewhere down the line during his career with the Angels, but I don't think any of us expected it to happen so soon. To be fair, it isn't solely because of his deteriorating skills (they haven't declined as bad as we all seem to think), it's more of a necessity to keep him healthy and allow our young starters to get out on the field every day. Once Bourjos comes back Trumbo is going to taking back the majority of the 1B starts and Pujols is still a player that needs to be playing every day. Adding that to the fact that keeping him at DH allows him to rest his ailing lower body without h...

Angels' Ryan Madson experiencing elbow inflammation

Los Angeles Angels right-handed reliever Ryan Madson was once again nearing return, and now we're once again reporting he's suffered a setback. The former closer is facing another "glitch" -- as manager Mike Scioscia puts it -- as he's experiencing inflammation in his throwing elbow, according to William Boor of MLB.com.

"Hopefully it's just a little glitch," manager
Mike Scioscia said. "I don't think it's anything major, but he needs to
get over this. He's close, as we said. Hopefully it's just a product of him
trying to get his stamina and going hard last week."

Madson logged an inning of work for the Angels' Single-A affiliate on May 13. The following day he experienced what he considered to be a normal level of soreness. However, this discomfort lingered, and he's now giving it a few days to "calm down."

Before his elbow once again acted up, Madson was slated to go on rehab assignm...

Can Mike Trout snatch the MVP?

On May 21st, Los Angeles Angels outfielder Mike Trout became the youngest American League player to hit for the cycle since 1930 at 21 years old.
The second year phenom won AL rookie of the year in 2012 and he also finished second for the league’s MVP award, behind only Miguel Cabrera.
But will Trout be able to dethrone the reigning MVP for the title in 2013?
As of May 22nd, the Angel in the outfield is hitting .297 with 34 RBI.
He has avoided the sophomore slump in nearly every facet as he continues to devour the MLB pitcher by pitcher.

Mike Trout Proves What We Already Know--He is One Bad Dude

It is not too often that we see a rookie come out and dominate like Los Angeles Angels outfielder Mike Trout did last season. You could definitely argue that he deserved the AL MVP last season (but it was hard to deny Miguel Cabrera at the same time).

The one thing about coming out of the gate as hard as Trout did last season was that he had to provide fans with Act II this season. Well, with performances like Tuesday night when he became the youngest player in the American League to hit for the cycle (ever) and the third youngest in the league since 1930.

Yeah, I think it is safe to say we got a good one in this guy.

Weaver takes another step toward Angels return

ANAHEIM, Calif. Angels pitcher Jered Weaver took another significant step forward in his rehab from a broken left elbow, throwing 75 pitches in an extended spring training game Wednesday at Scottsdale, Ariz.

Facing Colorados extended spring team, Weaver gave up one run and six hits in 5 23 innings. He threw 62 strikes, did not walk a batter and struck out nine.

The Angels want to see how Weaver feels coming out of the start before deciding their next step. Weaver is scheduled to join the team Thursday in Kansas City for the start of a four-game trip.

We have to look at Weave, see where he is, let him throw his bullpen (session) and see if he needs more work in a rehab setting or if hes ready to get after it with us, Scioscia said.

Weaver hasnt pitched in a game since suffering the injury to his non-throwing arm on April 7 at Texas. Last Friday, he threw a 60-pitch, four-inning simulated game at Angel Stadium.

The best case is that were going to fold him back into our rotation at some point next week, Sc

Trout hits for cycle, Angels romp

Mike Trout even surprised himself in adding to his growing list of impressive big league achievements.

Trout hit for the cycle and drove in five runs, Josh Hamilton celebrated his 32nd birthday with a homer and a triple his first two times up, and Howie Kendrick also went deep in the Los Angeles Angels' 12-0 rout of the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday night.

Trout, last season's AL rookie of the year and MVP runner-up, became the youngest AL player to hit for the cycle and third youngest in the major leagues since 1930. He's also the sixth player in Angels history to complete the cycle and the first to do it since Chone Figgins on Sept. 16, 2006, at Texas.

''It was one of those nights,'' Trout said. ''I didn't really think about it until about the eighth inning. And when I got on deck, I started feeling it a little bit. To be honest, I thought Josh was going to hit for the cycle after his those first two at-bats. I wasn't thinking about myself.''

Phenom Trout continues to amaze

Yeah, about that Mike Trout sophomore slump ...

After a slow April (.261, two homers, 13 RBI) and whispers of opposing pitchers figuring out the reigning Rookie of the Year, Trout answered on Tuesday – in a big way.

Trout hit for the cycle in the Angels' 12-0 win over the Mariners on Tuesday. Last year's MVP runner-up finished the game 4 for 5 and at 21 became the youngest player since Mel Ott in 1929 to accomplish the feat.

Here's one of Trout's four hits Tuesday night in Anaheim.

Trout, who authored one of the greatest seasons in baseball history in 2012, is getting hot as the weather warms up. After Tuesday's heroics, Trout is hitting .343 with 18 RBI in May.

When news of Trout's accomplishment hit Twitter, his No. 1 fan immediately chimed in.

One proud Mama!!! Standing ovation at the Big A !!! TROUTSTANDING !!!

Mike Trout hits for the cycle

Often times, the sequel doesn't quite live up to the hype of the original, but when it comes to Mike Trout...I don't think anyone is complaining about his second full season in the Majors. Tuesday night, Trout added another line to his already full resume when he hit for the cycle during a 12-0 romp against the Seattle Mariners. And in the process, became the first player to do it this season and just the seventh member of the Los Angeles Angels to accomplish the feat. Trout struck out in the first...but that was clearly the only hiccup in his game. The 21-year-old (oh, did anyone mention he's the youngest player to hit for the cycle in the American League?) then singled in the third, tripled in the fourth, doubled in the sixth and, you guessed it, hit his ninth home run of the season in the eighth. All in all, the "Miville Meteor" went 4-for-5 with five RBI, raising his batting average to .293. In case you were wondering, the last Angel to hit for th...

Angels' Weaver could return as early as Monday

Jered Weaver could rejoin the Angels' starting rotation next week, Manager Mike Scioscia said Tuesday.

Weaver is set to pitch in an extended spring game Wednesday in Arizona, the same day Joe Blanton is scheduled to start for the Angels. That would line up Weaver to replace Blanton when that turn comes up again Monday, against the Dodgers.

Weaver, the Angels' ace, has not pitched since April 7 because of a fractured left elbow. Blanton is 0-7 with a 6.62 earned-run average, the most losses and highest ERA of any starter in the American League. Blanton also has given up the most hits of any pitcher in the major leagues.

Blanton is in the first year of a two-year, 15-million contract. With Jerome Williams in the rotation, the Angels could try Blanton as a long reliever.

The Angels have targeted Weaver for five innings and 75 pitches in his extended spring appearance Wednesday.

"Where he lines up will be contingent with how he feels coming out of it," Scioscia said.

If all goes well, Scio

Halo Headlines: Albert Pujols doesn't matter anymore, rekindling the Cabrera-Trout debate

The May 21st, 2013 edition of daily news for the Los Angeles Angels including Albert Pujols doesn't matter anymore, rekindling the Cabrera-Trout debate and much more...

The Story: Albert Pujols doesn't matter anymore.

The Monkey Says: I cannot counter any of this. Pujols just isn't a top player anymore, at least not while his body is broken down the way it is right now. The problem is that there is little reasont to believe that his body won't continue to betray him given his age and the chronic nature of his current injuries. He can still be a very good player, but only in spurts and that may not hold true for much longer.

The Story: Jon Heyman rekindles the Miguel Cabrera-Mike Trout MVP and WAR debate.

The Monkey Says: I'm pretty sure Heyman only brought this up to let us know that players think he is somehow the arbiter of such things. This, and similar pieces that came out after Miggy's three-homer Sunday, all directly or indirectly use ...
