Four BC Players Earn All-ACC honors

Tackle Anthony Castonzo and linebacker Luke Kuechly were each recognized as first team all-ACC players today. Running back Montel Harris and center Matt Tennant both earned second team honors.

I would have liked to see Marcellus Bowman recognized for his stupendous play but I think most fans are still very pleased to see four of our starters recognized. The best part is that three of the four will most likely be starting again for the Eagles next season.

Honorable mention and freshman will be out later this week. The ACC also named Kuechly the defensive back of the week for his play against Maryland. HD placed BC 6th in her weekly power rankings.
Boston College/UNC Football Game Notes

Turnover battle
Turnovers were clearly the story of this game. The two teams combined for 10 turnovers in the game (Boston College had six). North Carolina was able to capitalize with two defensive scores and 151 total yards in interception returns. BC also had some key interceptions to keep them in the game, including a pick in the end zone by Roderick Rollins.

Shinskie struggles
Shinskie clearly struggled throughout this game. He was responsible for five turnovers (4 interceptions) and he even had another pick called back by a UNC penalty, although in his defense the pass to Pantale that went through his hands should have been caught. He completed just 43 percent of his passes for 101 yards. He struggled to handle UNC’s pressure and often simply chucked the ball up into coverage. He said following the game, “you just have to try and find where the pressure is coming from and try to avoid it… it seemed like every time I tried to go around or step up there was another guy there.” I actually felt the offensive line played pretty well in the second half although Shinskie’s indecision cost him as he held on to the ball too long on several occasions.

Third down woes
BC’s offense was 0-13 on third down conversions. Yikes. This boils down to the lack of passing game despite repeated attempts by Gary Tranquill to try and establish some type of momentum.

Bowman shines on senior day
Bowman has been stellar all season and really played himself into possible all-conference candidacy. On his final home game at Alumni he recorded 10 tackles and an interception. He has a well-deserved reputation as a hard hitter but if he proves he can defend the pass consistently as well he could have a future in the NFL.

Kuechly sets personal mark
By this point I can just pencil in a spot for Kuechly every week in this column. He continues to wow everyone with his extraordinary play. He made a career high 19 tackles against North Carolina. It will be scary to see how good he will be next year after another year of tutelage from Mark Herzlich.

Football: UNC at Boston College

Where: Alumni Stadium, Chestnut Hill, MA
When: Saturday, November 21st, Noon
TV: ESPN2
Records: UNC 7-3, 3-3 ACC; BC 7-3, 4-2 ACC

Here is hoping we don’t get the same kind of carryover the Heels seemingly got last week on the whole Harrison Barnes-beat Miami-beat Valpo stretch.

UNC takes their three game winning streak to Boston College where the Eagles are once again surprising everyone by being in the mix for the Atlantic Division. At this point UNC is playing for wins and the possibility of a 10 win season should they beat BC and NCSU then win their bowl game. The fact we are even talking about that says volumes about the defense and John Shoop’s ability to make chicken salad out of you know what. The Heels are also pushing for one of the ACC’s upper tier bowl bids. The Gator or Chick-Fil-A Bowls are distinct possibilities should the Heels keep winning. BC still holds out hope that they can win this game and UVa gets it done versus Clemson putting BC into the ACC Championship Game which would drive John Swofford nuts.

As always, the defense needs to do its thing so John Shoop can figure something out on offense. It would be nice if the defense did not have to score 14 points to get the win but we take them any way we can get them. BC is good on both sides of the ball and Montel Harris will prove a challenge to stop. That being said, if UNC can shut Ryan Williams down then I am fairly certain they can shut almost any running back in the ACC down. Secondary to that, UNC needs put pressure on the QB to hopefully create those dandy INTs which can be turned into points, maybe even without putting the offense on the field.

Speaking of the offense, over/under on Ryan Houston carries? I say 25. Take the over.

UNC 24 BC 10

Boston College receiver Rich Gunnell had a big afternoon with 10 catches for 179 yards and a touchdown in the Eagles' 20-16 loss at Notre Dame, then had a few choice words with Irish quarterback Jimmy Clausen:
What did Gunnell say to draw Jimmy's ire? Dr. Saturday's expert lip-readers have narrowed down the options:

Why Is Gameday Going To Boston?

ESPN is sending College Gameday to Boston for the officially dull, and unranked, matchup of Florida State and Boston College. Obviously there has to be a reason, and while some might think it's to promote the launch of ESPNBoston.com, that's actually not the case. ESPN is heading to BC in part to discuss the story of Mark Herzlich, who was the Eagles' star linebacker who was 2008's ACC Defensive POY, and diagnosed with cancer this past March.
Herzlich battling cancer, thoughts & prayers

No column today folks, just wanted all of the readers of LynchyRightNow to say a prayer for Boston College linebacker, Mark Herzlich. As you may know if you've been following our site, Herzlich is our favorite college football player and plays with more energy than any player I've ever seen. Unfortunately he is now facing his biggest battle, nope, not a new Virginia Tech running back, he's fighting cancer. For more information read:

Is There a Cover-Up for Positive Drug Tests at the NFL Combine?

I can’t remember the last time members of the media got stories of great magnitude flat-out wrong like they did with this one. Maybe it was when a TV station erroneously reported that Albert Pujols was on the Mitchell Report and later got reprimanded. It’s been reported over the past month that there [...]

Doug Flutie: Midget Moses

Yesterday, Boston College unveiled a bronze Rockylike statue of Doug Flutie. It's just so hard for me to believe. Hard for me to believe it's already been twenty-four years. I hate to sound like the oldest guy in the barbershop, but it feels like yesterday.

Matt Ryan: What Was I Thinking?

God my mouth is stinging. But I am SOOOOOO buzzing right now. I can't believe NFL players really put this much Skoal in their mouth - you can barely see it on TV. Glad I talked to Brohm last night or I would've looked totally stupid. Lucky he called me and mentioned it! Oh maaaaaannnnn my head is lighter than Lara Flynn Boyle with raging dysentery.

LETS ALL RELAX ... MATT RYAN IS NO HEISMAN WINNER

There are a couple things in life that I don't understand. I don't understand why Dane Cook is the voice of the baseball playoffs, I don't understand why someone thought it was a good idea to let a fat drug induced Britney Spears dance on a stripper pole for her new video, and I don't understand everyone's love affair with BC quarterback Matt Ryan.
