Lohse faces former team for third time this season

The St. Louis Cardinals routinely pound on the Milwaukee Brewers' pitchers, and Yadier Molina is one of the main culprits.
Kyle Lohse now has first-hand experience.
Molina looks to give his former teammate another rough time on the mound and help the NL-leading Cardinals take this three-game series with the Brewers on Sunday.
St. Louis (27-15) has won 11 of the past 15 meetings with Milwaukee, hitting .327 with runners in scoring position and .297 overall with 14 homers while averaging 6.3 runs in those victories.
Molina has been a big part of that success, hitting .378 over his past 20 meetings. He's been even better at home over that stretch, compiling a .415 average with 10 RBIs in 13 meetings.
The four-time All-Star catcher is 3 for 8 in this series as the Cardinals continue to get to Milwaukee's pitchers.
They had 13 hits in Friday's 7-6 victory, and reached double digits for a sixth straight meeting Saturday. However, their 10 hits weren't enough in a 6-4, 10-inning loss, which snapp

Roenicke encouraged by Brewers response in loss

Though it was another loss - Milwaukee's 13th in its last 15 games - the Brewers were able to find positives in Friday's 7-6 setback in St. Louis.
After falling behind 6-0 after three innings, the Brewers crept back into the game on the strength of an Aramis Ramirez three-run home run in the fourth, only to watch St. Louis grab an unearned run back in the bottom of the inning.
But Ramirez blasted his second three-run home run of the night in the sixth inning to cut the deficit to 7-6.
"We needed to get back in it and he gives us three runs with the first one," Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said. "We felt like we got back in it. Certainly the next one gets us one run away. We know they have good arms in the bullpen, but we felt pretty good at that time."
Milwaukee had its chances to even the score, but failed to capitalize. Following Ramirez's homer in the sixth, Carlos Gomez blooped a single and stole second base. Yuniesky Betancourt grounded out and Rickie Weeks struck out to e

Managing Expectations of Sports Journalism (Why Todd Rosiak Isn’t a Shill)

(Image: Totalprosports.com)

In JSOnline.com’s most recent online chat with Brewers beat writer Todd Rosiak, one participant named Craig called into question the professionalism of Mr. Rosiak and his colleague Tom Haudricourt (edited for clarity):

Is it accurate to characterize what you and Haudricourt do with the Brewers as journalism? It seems like you guys hardly do more than serve as a mouthpiece for the organization…relaying the desired narrative. Considering Journal Communications and the Brewers are long standing business partners, is it unrealistic for fans to think the beat writers will do anything beyond soft peddle the coverage?

Rosiak speculated Craig’s question was motivated by specific anti-player/manager animus, and said “Our job is to report on what happens, not editorialize.” That’s all well and good, and while it appears that Craig was being provocative, it’s true the Brewers and Journal Communications have overlapping business interests. Is it reason...

Terrible Baseball Card of the Day: Pete Ladd

Pete Ladd, ’86 Topps
There is nothing remotely interesting about Pete Ladd aside from the fact that he looks like Wierd Al. I do question him wearing a gold chain as he doesn’t look cool enough to rock this look. That’s something that Neon Deion Sanders did, not a guy that looks like he could own a van down by the river.

Milwaukee Brewers Recall Francisco Rodriguez from Nashville

The Milwaukee Brewers have recalled Francisco Rodriguez from their Triple-A Nashville minor league affiliate. The veteran right-handed reliever is expected to work the later innings but will not be given the closers gig right out of the gate. Jim Henderson continues to star as the man to close out games.

Breakout season just a matter of time for Gomez

MILWAUKEE -- Rarely is there any activity on the field before a Sunday afternoon game as team's don't usually take batting practice prior to a day game after a night game.

This particular Sunday, Brewers center fielder Carlos Gomez was out chasing balls in the outfield. No, Gomez wasn't getting in some extra work, the balls he was chasing weren't even baseballs.

Gomez was throwing whiffle balls to his four-year-old son Yandel, chasing him around Miller Park. The moment seemed so innocent, but yet was a telling illustration of Gomez's current comfort level both on and off of the diamond.

"He's really fun," Gomez said. "It's one of the best moments in life I can have. When I wake up he tells me he wants to hit. He tells me this is how (Norichika) Aoki hits. This is how Rickie (Weeks) hits. I'm enjoying it. I say 'Thank you God' for giving me the opportunity to see my son growing and to see my son be like his dad, probably better."

The journey began

Who is Jean Segura and what is he doing on my leaderboard?

Fangraphs.com's leaderboard is always a fascinating place. If you keep track of players from year to year, surprises show up there before they do in the national consciousness. Headley of the Padres was last year's big surprise. Recently, upon scouring the list, the name, Jean Segura, popped up. And while I should know every player in baseball since writing about the sport is what I do, Segura was an unknown to me. Who the heck is this guy and what is he doing tied for sixth among all position players in value?

One of my weak areas is keeping track of prospects. Guys like Craig Wieczorkiewicz (@mwltravelor) and Mike Schwartze (@Mike_Schwartze) as follows on Twitter help me get better at it, but it is still my weakness. As such, there was probably no way that I would have seen Jean Segura on Baseball America's top prospect list the last two years (55th and 57th). I would not have known that he was a free agent signing by the Angels way back in 2007 when he was only ...

Dare We Suspect That Carlos Gomez’ Performance is Enhanced?

(Photo: Mark J. Terrill/Associated Press)

It’s obvious that Carlos Gomez’ performance in the early part of 2013 is enhanced compared to previous seasons. These days, remarkable production can lead to speculation that a player might not be enhancing appropriately. Last week, The Brewer Nation included a post partially titled “In Defense of Carlos Gomez,” which recounted a talk radio discussion where one host said Gomez’ improved stats “raise an eyebrow.”

The Brewer Nation’s defense of Gomez speaks for itself, but it also provides the opportunity to review what we think we know about PEDs. Roger Clemens was acquitted of perjury charges last year, but it’s widely assumed that his dominating career was made possible by PEDs. When Melky Cabrera was suspended for using PEDs last year, he was the top hitter in the NL. Almost baseball fans outside of Milwaukee believe Ryan Braun owes his MVP in 2011 to PEDs. It’s conventional wisdom that PEDs result in improved production.

Report: Brewers to call up Francisco Rodriguez

The Milwaukee Brewers had until Thursday to make up their mind on Francisco Rodriguez, and it appears as if they will add the former closer to the big league roster.

According to a report by CBS Sports, the Brewers will call Rodriguez up from Triple-A Nashville on Wednesday, a day before the team had to release him if he wasn't in the Major Leagues.

Rodriguez, 31, was signed to a minor league deal on April 17 and appeared in four minor league games between advanced Class-A Brevard County and Triple-A Nashville.

Brewers general manager Doug Melvin was on hand to watch Rodriguez pitch Monday and Tuesday for Nashville. Rodriguez didn't allow a run, walked three and struck out seven in his four minor league innings.

According to the Nashville Sounds, Rodriguez hit 91 mph on the radar fun with his fastball during Tuesday's outing.

Acquired on July 12, 2011 from the New York Mets, Rodriguez was key in the team's run to the division title and the National League Championship Series. Rodriguez ha

Gruman: Brewers must stick with Weeks through slump

What to do with the struggling second baseman?
Rickie Weeks is mired in another prolonged slump, and the whole state is talking about it. There's some in this town that would like to chase ever player who has a bad week, but Weeks has had a bad month and a half and deserves to be talked about.
But that doesn't change the fact Weeks is going to be Milwaukee's starting second baseman next week and even next month. The Brewers are committed to the former All-Star in part because of what he can bring to the table and also because there's simply no other viable option.
And they're right in doing so. Before you start sending me angry notes on Twitter or rip me in an e-mail, hear me out.
I'm not blind to the fact Weeks has hurt Milwaukee's offense this season with his .183 batting average and lack of run production. What's often ignored when someone calls for a player to be benched is a better option is needed to replace him.

Rickie Weeks still Rickie Weeks

Last night Rickie Weeks went 1-for-4 with a walk and a strikeout. If that hit had been an extra base hit, it would have been the most Rickie Weeks line ever. 1-for-4 with a walk isn't a sexy line and it's not very fun to watch, but it's good and it's valuable. It's a .400 On Base Percentage and it's what Rickie Weeks does. If you understand that and why it's valuable and why that 1-for-4 with a walk game, day in and day out is actually awesome, then good for you. You're sophisticated and understand the nuances of baseball better than your average fan. Enjoying Rickie Weeks is like listening to Grizzly Bear, it's good if you're into that sort of thing, but if you're not it's pretty freakin' boring and crappy.
How do you spell Rickie Weeks?

Gallardo looks to maintain dominance of Pirates

The Milwaukee Brewers' struggles this month include a pair of subpar outings from Yovani Gallardo, and his latest was his shortest of the season.
The Brewers are hoping their ace can get untracked by continuing his dominance of the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday night.
Milwaukee (16-21) has dropped 10 of 12 this month and is 1-4 on this 10-game road trip.
It appeared the Brewers were turning things around after opening this four-game series with Monday's 5-1 win, but they followed that up by squandering a two-run lead to fall 4-3 in 12 innings the next day.
Turning to Gallardo (3-2, 4.70 ERA) would seem to be an ideal chance to bounce back, but he's 0-1 with a 6.30 ERA over his last two starts after concluding April by winning three in a row with a 2.29 ERA.
The final game of that stretch was a 10-4 home win over Pittsburgh (22-17) on April 29, when he allowed two runs and three hits in seven innings opposite Wandy Rodriguez, who is scheduled to oppose him again.
Despite that success, consistency

Milwaukee Brewers: should team move Ryan Braun to clean-up spot?

The Milwaukee Brewers have been a tough team to figure out in 2013.
They started out 2-8, won nine-straight to move three games over .500 before losing nine of 10 to fall to 15-20.
The Brewers topped the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-1 on Monday night to help break out of that funk, but it was an interesting offensive gameplan that helped Milwaukee do so.

Brewers manager Ron Roenicke sat Rickie Weeks after playing him in 35-straight games and seeing a .181 batting average in return. Roenicke also reluctantly sat slugger Ryan Braun with a stiff neck Monday night, giving the manager two open slots in the lineup to tinker with.
The result? An idea I can get behind.
The Brewers should ride the hot starts of Jean Segura and Carlos Gomez as long as they can.
Milwaukee batted Norichika Aoki in his regular leadoff role, had Jean Segura bat second and then inserted Carlos Gomez into the No. 3 spot for the first time in his career.
The result? The trio went 7-for-14 with six stolen bases.
It’s an inc...

Brewers want Segura long term

Brewers shortstop Jean Segura has played only 80 games in the majors, but club officials already know they want him to be part of the team's long-term future.

In fact, they knew it about a month ago.

It was around that time that the Brewers offered Segura a long-term contract, according to his agent, Joe Klein.

No deal is close, Klein said in part because Segura, 23, is at such an early stage of his career, it's difficult to gauge his long-term value.

"They contacted me," Klein said of the Brewers. "Right now, I guess it's in my court. But with a guy this young, it's hard to figure out what the right numbers would be.

"It would be good, be nice if it was possible to do. But I don't know. It's way, way on the drawing board."

Brewers general manager Doug Melvin said, "We do not want to comment on discussions in-season. It can be disruptive."

Segura, rapidly emerging as an All-Star candidate, is batting .368 with a 1.000 OPS, six homers, 16 RBI a

Brewers look to keep offense going for Lohse

Runs have been difficult to come by at times for the Milwaukee Brewers, and scoring essentially has been a problem each time Kyle Lohse pitches.

Reversing that trend, though, may not be easy against Pittsburgh Pirates starter Jeff Locke, who takes the mound at home Tuesday night.

The Brewers (16-20) have been outscored by 25 runs while losing nine of 11 this month, beginning with a 6-4 defeat to Pittsburgh on May 1 that marks the Pirates' only victory in the last 11 meetings.

Milwaukee's scoring woes surface mainly when Lohse (1-4, 3.53 ERA) is on the hill, as he's received one or no runs of support five times in his seven starts.

Lohse, though, has posted a 4.93 ERA while suffering the loss in each of his last three outings. However, he's received 12 runs of support through 43-13 innings on the season.

"It's not something that I'm going around hanging my head about or saying anything," Lohse said after giving up four runs in 6-13 innings of a 4-1 loss to Texas on Wednes

Estrada bounces back with extra heat

Self admittedly, Marco Estrada had one of the worst outings of his career the last time he took the mound.

After an extra two days off with two extra bullpen sessions with Brewers pitching coach Rick Kranitz, Estrada bounced back with his best start of the season. The right-hander allowed just three hits and one run over seven innings to help Milwaukee snap its four-game losing streak with a 5-1 victory in Pittsburgh.

"That's impressive," Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said of Estrada's bounce-back performance. "That's what you hope for, but to turn it around that quick is difficult. He commanded the ball just like he did last year when he was on. He had a live fastball today which really helped, but his change-up and breaking ball were outstanding."

The extra rest allowed Estrada to clear his head mentally while spending his time with Kranitz working on his timing in the bullpen. His mechanics and command were all out of sync May 5, as the Cardinals got him for eight runs in

Brewers Monday: Segura named NL Player of the Week

It wasn't the best of weeks on the field for the Milwaukee Brewers, but young shortstop Jean Segura continued to open eyes in his first full season in the big leagues.

Segura was named the National League's Player of the Week after hitting .500 with a league-best .950 slugging percentage over the week of May 6-12.

The 23-year-old had multiple hits in five of Milwaukee's six games, hitting two doubles and two home runs while going 10-for-20. Segura went 2-for-4 against Texas on Tuesday before going 0-for-4 on Wednesday.

Segura bounced back and went 8-for-12 with two doubles, two home runs and two RBI this past weekend against Cincinnati.

This is the first player of the week honor in Segura's career and the second for the Brewers this season. Center fielder Carlos Gomez was the National League Player of the Week for the week of April 15-21.

Weeks, Braun sit: Brewers manager Ron Roenicke has put off giving struggling second baseman Rickie Weeks a day off, but the skipper decided Monday was

Brewers Pitching Ranks Last in NL (But It Could Be Worse)

(Photo: Mike McGinnis/Getty Images North America)

As of this writing, the Brewers pitching staff is last in the league in earned run average, as well as runs allowed. While the bullpen has had its ups and downs, the starting pitching has been remarkably ineffective – with the notable exception of Kyle Lohse. Although he’s cooled down somewhat, Lohse is still the only starter with an ERA under 4.00. Also, Lohse has pitched only 2.2 fewer innings than Yovani Gallardo, and Gallardo has had one more start.

A couple months ago, some Brewers fans were less than thrilled that Lohse got a three-year contract, but where would they be now without him? At the beginning of spring training, the starting rotation was supposed to be Gallardo, Marco Estrada, and some combination of Wily Peralta, Mike Fiers, Chris Narveson, and Mark Rogers. It seemed like the Brewers were going to ask a lot of several untested pitchers, but you never know with pitching.

As it turned out, Rogers neve...

The lamest baseball jersey of all-time?

I can almost guarantee that the idea for these Brewers jerseys was more the wife’s decision than her husband’s. Here’s hoping one of his buddies got a similar Milwaukee jersey that reads “Totally Whipped” to go along with his “Since” custom shirt, but that would imply that this guy gets to go to baseball games (or anywhere) with his friends, and we all know that anyone who wears a jersey like that doesn’t go anywhere without his adoring, yet authoritative, wife.
