Are The Cavaliers Really Struggling?

Earlier today I vented my disgust and frustration with the Cavaliers. Particularly, I took exception with Mike Brown humiliating Zydrunas Ilgauskas by giving him his first (that we know of) DNP-CD of his career on the night he had friends and family in town to help him celebrate breaking Danny Ferry’s record for career games [...]

A Few Random Random Thoughts

First of all, I have been reading about the drama in Cleveland following their game against the Mavs. Zydrunas Ilgauskas was poised to break the franchise record for games played. He had tied the Cavs' GM Danny Ferry for the top spot in the Cavaliers history books on Friday night in Charlotte, when he suited up for the 723rd time as a Cavalier. For some very bizarre reason, Mike Brown kept him on the bench for all 48 minutes of the game. Ilgauskas said he was devastated. Not disappoi...

Numbers Mean A Lot In The Commonwealth

2,555. It will be 2,555 days of consecutive Virginia Tech possession of the Commonwealth Cup until the University of Virginia can make an attempt to win it. Also, three. Three straight senior Cavalier classes have never beaten Virginia Tech... Awesome. The Hokies soundly defeated the Cavaliers Saturday 42-13. However, if you were watching the game, you would not have been able to predict that result at half time. This game was, quite frankly, the ultimate summary of the 2009 Virginia Tech seas...

Virginia wrapped up their worst season since 1986 with a 42-13 loss to Virginia Tech.
There is a legitimate debate on whether Georgia Tech’s Derrick Morgan or UNC’s Robert Quinn is the leagues defensive player of the year. Morgan leads the ACC in sacks with 12.5. Quinn is 2nd with 11.0. However, Quinn leads the conference in tackles for loss with 17 versus Morgan’s 15. Quinn also was 2nd in fumbles forced with six. Morgan received more votes than Quinn did in the voting for All-ACC defensive end. Deunta Williams and Kendric Burney combined for 11 of UNC’s 19 INTs this season. Quan Sturdivant was just all sorts of awesome both in name and wreaking havoc. As was Bruce Carter. Marvin Austin seemed to be more productive as the season wore on and was all over the field against NCSU.

Also, kudos to Casey Barth for making the 2nd team. Barth was as shaky as a kicker can get early on but ran a streak of 16 straight FGs before the blocked attempt versus NCSU.

As Promised, Williams Puts on a Show

by Chris TomassonFiled under: CavaliersORLANDO -- Mike Brown made like an emcee for a lounge act. With his pregame interview Wednesday night running out of steam, the Cleveland coach suddenly saw his point guard, Mo Williams, walk by. Brown yelled for Williams to come over and say a few words to the assembled media. Williams rolled out some early material about how his alma mater, Alabama, was going to continue to do some damage on the gridiron. Then he got to the good stuff. "You all re...

As Expatriate said, we all are busy this week, so this preview will be shorter than normal. After last week's loss to Wake Forest, Maryland returns to College Park for homecoming as they take on the Virginia Cavaliers. Both Maryland (2-4) and Virginia (2-3) have had rough starts plus both coaching staffs are on the hot seat, but UVA has won its last two against UNC and Indiana and will be favored to win the game.In scouting Virginia, they are led by Jameel Sewell, a senior quarterback from...

Looking at Maryland-Virginia

Somehow, the Terps are going to have to protect quarterback Chris Turner against Virginia and create some holes for the dormant running game.

In other words, I see the key to the game as how effective -- or not -- Maryland's offensive line can be.

That's a concern in every game, of course. But blocking for the run game is especially important on Saturday because the Cavaliers have a pretty good pass defense.

Virginia hasn’t allowed more than 190 yards passing in a game this s...

Top Reasons Virginia Must Fire Al Groh

The Virginia Cavaliers are an absolute train wreck. There is no other way to put it, and anyone who saw their 31-3 lost to Duke would be forced to agree. Virginia is last in about every statistical category in the ACC, and with games left against Maryland, ECU, Clemson, Wake, and Va Tech the Hoos are guaranteed to go bellow 500. There's a distinct chance that they will not win three games. Now with a team in such turmoil one has to ask where is the blame to be placed? And the blame has to be place on head coach Al Groh. He has done nothing with this program since the day he took over, and bellow are the top reasons that Mr. Groh should be relieved of his duties as head coach of the Virginia Cavaliers.

?

His 1.6 million dollar annual salary. This salary places Groh within the top 15 of highest paid coaches in the NCAA. Not bad if he has the same coaching records those men on that list. However, outside of Tommy Bowden of Clemson, no one has underachieved while making more money than Al Groh. If you do this math, Groh will pull in about 470k per win this year, and that's hoping he can get to 3 wins.

? He claims the 2008 season is a rebuilding year. Al Groh has been at UVA since the 2001 season that means he has declared three rebuilding seasons in his tenure at UVA, 2001, 2006, and 2008. Seriously, every two years is a rebuilding class? A solid program should have to rearrange parts not build the entire program from scratch every time a player graduates.

? 32 players drafted or signed free agent contracts to the NFL. That's a lot of a talent for a team that has never finished better than losing the Gator Bowl. However, 32 NFL caliber players and yet 9-3 is the best Groh could do. That tells me it is not the players fault but the coaches who are not able to implement a solid game plan.

? The inability to pull the top recruits within the state. Every year, Virginia Tech beats UVA in the recruiting battle. Tech manages to go out and sign the top quarterbacks and receivers in the state of Virginia. Groh settles for what is left. This is largely due to Groh's inability to motivate kids, and his poor people skills. The glum and quiet routine works for Bill Belichick because he does not have to sit in a player's living room and explain to his mama how he will take care of her son. Al Groh has to do exactly that, and his northern attitude sucks, and detours many of the traditional southern families he must visit while recruiting.

? Disciplinary and academic problems. The UVA program has lost 10 players since the conclusion of the 2007. That includes two, yes two, starting quarterbacks. The reasons for dismissal include not being academically eligible, UVA is an elite institution and players must go to class (the kids at Vandy do it). The also include arrest on DUI and drug charges (starting QB Peter Lalich). And getting arrested at a gay bar for stealing beer (explain that one to your parents). All of these incidents are completely unacceptable and embarrassing to a very proud school with proud traditions. It is obvious that Al Groh has no control over his players.

? His record against rival schools. For not being a powerhouse football team, UVA has plenty of rivals, four to be exact; Virginia Tech, Florida State, North Carolina and Maryland. Al Groh is a combined 10-16 against his rival schools. Included in that is a 1-5 record against FSU, 1-6 against Va. Tech, 3-3 against Maryland and 5-2 against UNC. Unacceptable.

The bottom line is Al Groh has sucked the life out of the University of Virginia football program. And as long as he is head coach, the program will continue to flounder and transform into the laughing stock of not only the ACC but of all college football. Groh must go.

Big 12 Match-up Texas Longhorns Face off against the Nebraska Cornhuskers

Ladies and gentlemen, who would've thought this? After getting thrashed by the Wyoming Cowboys in Laramie 23-3, the Virginia Cavaliers(7-1, 4-0 ACC) have rattled off seven straight wins, matching the longest winning streak in school history. Five of those wins have come by 5 points or less and it is safe to say that no other team in the country has matched the "Cardiac Cavaliers'" ability to pull out the close games. Al Groh's Cavaliers are currently sitting in a comfortable, but very unfamiliar position: first place in the ACC Coastal Division standings. There is something about that last phrase that just reads incredibly well. When you're a Virginia fan you realize that times like this don't come along very often and you learn to enjoy every last second of it.

Let's take a look at the final few games on the slate for the 'Hoos and see if the dream season will continue for Al Groh or if his Cavaliers will come crashing back down to earth.

2007 Football Recruiting Roundup: Virgina Cavaliers (ACC)

Fantasy College Impact:

Jameel Sewell looks to have the starting QB job locked up after a 1342 PaYd, 5 PaTD, 6 PaINT, 200 RuYd, 4 RuTD sophomore season. Incoming 4-star recruit Peter Lalich should be a good player to redshirt if your league allows that type of roster spot.

Jason Snelling is gone, as are his 772 RuYd, 7 RuTD, 286 ReYd. This leaves the door open for a host of young running backs.....
