College Football Preseason Composite Rankings Top 126

The College Football Universe composite rankings takes into account three important factors in college football: recruiting, returning starters, and end of last season's polls. The composite rankings consist of the recruiting and returning starters rankings for 2013 and the final human polls for the 2012-13 season (AP & Coaches); 41 teams received votes in the final polls. In each of the three categories, teams are rated with a maximum of 126 points and a minimum of zero. For example in the recruiting rankings, Alabama has 472 points at No. 1 and Ohio State has 469 points at No. 2 so when converted to the composite rankings, the Tide receives 126 points and the Buckeyes receives 125.199 points (469/472 times 126). For teams not included in the Coaches Poll due to sanctions, their AP rank was duplicated. This is another interesting look at ranking teams, but it is not exactly perfect. Some ratings are skewed. Northern Illinois appears drastically underrated, but that is mostly...

Indiana Hoosiers dunk contest is not what you might expect

It is probably safe to say that we all recognize Indiana as a basketball school. The Hoosiers have built a long-standing rich tradition when it comes to college hoops. Bobby Knight helped build Indiana basketball to what it continues to be to this day as they have resurfaced as a Big Ten power. It's OK for a college football blog to recognize the Hoosiers at a basketball school.

Apparently it is also OK for Indiana football coach Kevin Wilson to recognize the basketball tradition in Bloomington.

Looking to show off the improved athleticism of the Indiana football program, Wilson had his football players participate in a dunk contest, and some of these guys have some jam skills. the football Hoosiers may not be quite the sensation Florida Gulf Coast is, but it's also not everyday we see big football players showing off their hops and dunks on camera. Thankfully, Indiana thought it would be a good idea to share this fun with the Internet.

Hoosiers Dunk Contest: Football style

The Hoosier state loves them some basketball, we all know that. However, this is 'nother level type stuff as the football team went all dunk contest on us all. Seriously, this video might represent better dunking than we've seen in the NBA Dunk Contest in the past few years.

Hell, we saw everything from offensive lineman dunking, to little QB Tre Roberson, oh and even 1st person viewpoint dunking courtesy of Cody Latimer. This ain't your father's Hoosiers anymore, that's for sure.

(h/t to our friends over at Crystal Ball Run for the tip-off to this video):

Here is a list of returning starters for all 126 FBS teams including schools in transition. Indiana, Louisville, and UTSA bring back the most starters with 21. The Cardinals look to have the most promising year of the three after an 11 win season and a Sugar Bowl victory last season. FIU brings back the least starters for 2013.
B1G Spring Football Preview: The Indiana Hoosiers

I love this time of year. March Madness is in full effect and I certainly have the, umm… “madness”. I, personally, cannot get enough of it. But what makes this time of year even more compelling from a sports fan’s point of view is the emergence of spring football. I, for one, am the type of sports fan that can’t digest enough on my favorite team, in any sport. Here at Know It All Football, we’re keeping tabs on your favorite gridiron gang so you don’t have to. With the success of their hoops team this season, it seems only fitting that in part 2 of our B1G spring preview, we take a look at the Indiana Hoosiers.
INDIANA
Camp Opens: March 2nd
Spring Game: April 13th
It’s been baby steps for Indiana coach Kevin Wilson and his staff so far but there is no doubt everyone else in the B1G is starting to take notice. Wilson took his team from one win in his first season to four wins last year. While a four-win season may not seem like a success to most, those are the types of baby steps ne...

What we learned: Iowa at IU

For the first time since 2007, IU strung together back-to-back Big Ten wins. The Hoosiers rallied twice to defeat Iowa, 24-21.

All season, IU has struggled to put away games when they had a lead. On Saturday, they managed to do just enough to keep the Hawkeyes at bay.

Now it appears that IU may be in contention for the Big Ten title game, due to Penn State and Ohio State being ineligible. They will have a tough game against division leader Wisconsin next weekend.

For now, let's take a look at what we learned from this game:

	The Good

Quarterback Cam Coffman is cooler under pressure. After being benched mid way through the first quarter, Coffman came back into the game for a drive near the end of the first half. The JUCO transfer led a blisteringly fast drive that ended with wide receiver Cody Latimer in the end zone with the ball. Coffman was poised in this outing and, despite being benched for most of the first half, finished the game 21-of-33 passing for 315 yards ...

What we learned: IU at Illinois

IU finally notched a Big Ten win under head coach Kevin Wilson. The Hoosiers 31-17 win in Champaign will probably be IU's biggest all season.

After weeks of futility, IU finally showed that all the progress it has made this season can amount to something. Too often this season we have seen this team take a late lead or put together a late rally only to fall short.

This time IU finally sealed the deal.

Here's what we can take away from this game.

	The Good

The defense was superb. Week to week we could point to the defense as the thing preventing IU from getting over the top, but not this time. The second half near shutout this defense pitched was a thing of beauty. They harassed Illinois quarterback, Nathan Scheelhaase, to the point where he was completely beaten and just wanted the game to end. IU came into the game with 12 sacks and were able to get Scheelhaase behind the line of scrimmage for seven more. These were not just coverage sacks either, the d-lin...

IU Defeats Illinois on the Road, 31-17

The Hoosiers finally got a Big Ten win under coach Kevin Wilson. While IU put up 31 points, it was the defense that really stepped up for IU in the second half.

IU finished the game with seven sacks and had two goal line defensive stands late in the game to keep Illinois from making it a close game.

Stephen Houston was impressive for the Hoosiers. The junior running back had 21 carries for 71 yards and two touchdowns. He also had two receptions for 16 yards and another touchdown.

Cam Coffman was pulled early in the first half after an ill advised pass on third down that resulted in an interception. Freshman Nate Sudfeld relieved Coffman and had an efficient game. Sudfled completed 10-of-15 passes for 107 yards and two touchdowns.

The story of the game was IU's defense in the second half. Illinois had multiple chances to get back into the game, but the Hoosiers forced third-and-longs and got timely sacks to kill the Illini's drives.

We'll have more on this ga...

Indiana University football hosts Michigan State for homecoming: gameday preview

Indiana University faces Michigan State this Saturday for Homecoming. The Hoosiers, 2-2 (0-1), faces a formerly ranked Spartans, 3-2 (0-1), that has lost two close games in the past three weeks. Both teams are looking for their first Big Ten win of the season. Michigan should be contending for a Big Ten championship, but are currently at the bottom of the Legends division. Michigan State lost to then No. 20 Notre Dame and No. 14 Ohio State, both games at home. The Spartans lost by just one point to OSU and lost 20-3 to the Irish. The Spartans no longer have a dynamic offense like they have in the past few years but they have traded it for a stifling defense. They have only managed 20 points per game on offense. They rank dead last in the the Big Ten in total offense. Defensively, Michigan State has been amazing. They are 12th in the nation in points allowed with teams scoring just under 13 points a game. They have the best defense in the Big Ten by a wide margin. Junior running...

Indiana University falls to northwestern, 44-29

A second half rally fell short for the Hoosiers, as Northwestern's offense was all over IU.

IU's defense was shredded to the tune of 706 yards of offense by the Wildcats. Quarterback Kain Colter should be the Big Ten offensive player of the week after being the teams leading rusher and receiver. The Hoosiers had no answer for him as he ran for 163 yards and four touchdowns. Colter also nine receptions for 131 yards.

IU pulled Cam Coffman and let true freshman Nate Sudfeld lead the Hoosiers. IU was held scoreless in the first half, but came out with some fire in the second. Down by 27 points, IU was able to put up 29 of their own, but never got within a touchdown of the Wildcats lead.

Sudfeld was 9-of-16 for 157 yards and a touchdown. Stephen Houston was solid on the ground with 91 yards and a touchdown. Wideout Kofi Hughes, who came back from a knee injury early in the game, had five catches for 110 yards and a touchdown. Tevin Coleman also had a 96-yard kickoff ret...

IU football at Northwestern: What to watch for

IU opens the Big Ten season with a visit to Northwestern at Ryan Field. The Hoosiers have very few winable games left on the schedule, but this might be one they could steal.

Northwestern is 4-0 and while they haven't been a dominant team all season. They are much better than many people have given them credit for and another couple wins could see them landing in the top 25.

Let's take a look at some of the key factors going into the game.

	Rotating QBs

Northwestern rotates sophomore Trevor Siemian and junior Kain Colter at the position. Siemian is more of a traditional passing quarterback while Colter is involved in a lot more runs plays. Colter is also the teams second leading rusher and has nearly a five yard average per carry. Don't confuse Colter as just a running QB, his stats are almost identical to Siemian. Even with the two QBs, Northwestern only manages 186 passing yards per game. Neither QB has thrown an interception but the two only have three pas...

Indiana University loses again to Ball State, 41-39

For the third time in the past five years, IU fell to Ball State. The Hoosiers had a furious comeback late in the fourth quarter and briefly took a one point lead with less than a minute left. It was all for naught, as Ball State was able to drive into field goal range and win the game.

This was a completely disheartening loss that really makes you question your loyalty to a team. The Hoosiers toyed with their fans emotions all game and in the end couldn't lock it up.

It's a tough loss, and one that doesn't bode well for the rest of the season. IU has a week off before Big Ten season starts.

We'll forgo the usual "Good" and "Bad" because there were issues at every phase of the game.

	Offense

The ground game was still solid. IU churned out 135 yards on the ground. The majority of the work was done by Stephen Houston, who accounted for 102 yards and a touchdown. Houston was great, the rest of the backs were not. The offensive line was r...

Recap: Indiana University Football falls to Ball State at home, 41-39

Indiana University lost once again to in-state rival Ball State. The Hoosiers took a one point lead with under a minute left in the game. Ball State was able to drive the ball into field goal range where Steven Schott kicked a 42 yard FG to take the win as time expired.

IU had no answer on defense for the Cardinals and were unable to generate much consistency on offense. IU committed 12 penalties for 127 yards.

Quarterback Cam Coffman left the game late in the third quarter and freshman Nate Sudfeld took over. We'll have more on this injury as it develops.

Sudfel looked good on the final drive of the game, completing a pass on 4th and seven to keep the Hoosiers alive.

Check back for a more in-depth look at this loss.

Football: Indiana University at Massachusetts: Recap

Indiana University improved to 2-0 after blowing out Massachusetts 45-6. The Hoosiers looked exceptional in all phases of the game but they lost starting quarterback Tre Roberson for the season with a broken leg.

Losing a player like Roberson is a huge blow to a young team that was finally starting to build some momentum. Roberson is not just a talented player, he was also becoming a leader in the field and the locker room. He is the kind of player that will pick his team up on his back and carry them to victory.

Before his injury, Roberson was tearing apart the Minutemen. He was 6-of-13 for 76 yards and a touchdown. The sophomore also ran for 114 yards and two touchdowns. Losing him is a big blow to the offense.

The good news is that Roberson won't miss out on a year of eligibility. Coach Kevin Wilson stated that he will be redshirted and thus should be around for three more season.

UMass does not appear to be a team that is ready to play in the FBS. While the Hoo...

Indiana University Football at Massachusetts: Preview

IU hits the road in week two heading to Foxboro to take on the University of Massachusetts. The Hoosiers look to build on a 1-0 record after a narrow win against Indiana State.

This is Massachusetts first year in FBS and the MAC. This is the first of IU's two MAC opponents, the second coming the following week against Ball State. The Minutemen will be playing all of their home games in Gillette Stadium, home of the Patriots, which is about 90 miles from their home in Amherst.

UMass has a new head coach in Charley Molnar. Molnar is an offensive expert with 29 years of coaching experience from Notre Dame, Cincinnati, and Central Michigan.

UMass lost 37-0 to Connecticut last week. The Minutemen managed just 59-yards on offense and gave up 372-yards on defense. UMass managed three takeaways, but were unable to do anything with the ball. UConn dominated time of possession, holding onto the ball for over 36 minutes.

A win here will double the total from last season. IU shoul...

Indiana University Vs Indiana State: Recap

IU defeated Indiana State in the season opener at home 24-17 Saturday night. IU squandered many chances to put the game away early, and late, while allowing ISU to run all over the defense.

Quite frankly, this is not the performance you want to see on opening day when facing a FCS (read: less talented) team. IU should have blown this team out by double digits. There is no reason for this team to only have only a one possession lead so late in the game against an inferior opponent.

The season opener didn't really bode well for the rest of the year. IU will be looking at a number of savage beatings against Big Ten opponents if they can't right the ship quickly in the next two weeks.

But let's take a look at what we learned on Saturday night.

	The Good

The passing attack led by Tre Roberson has the potential to be excellent. The words "poised" and "decisive" best describe his outing. Roberson completed 26-of-36 passes, and for much of the...

Tornadoes forces Indiana indoors

The Indiana Hoosier spring game was scheduled for today but the weather wasn’t cooperating for the Hoosiers. A severe tornado watch forced the Indiana Hoosiers to move their scrimmage inside to their indoor practice facility. Weather has been a problem for spring games across the country for other programs. The Nebraska Cornhuskers were also forced to move indoors for their spring game. HT @zwilk7 JUMP!

Indiana Football Is Bleeding Quarterbacks

With the news that Indiana Hoosier quarterbacks Dusty Kiel and Ed Wright-Baker have left the program coming on the heels of former IU commit Gunner Kiel’s commitment to LSU, you’d think things are pretty bad in Bloomington. But that’s a tricky statement because things are always bad in Bloomington when it comes to college football.
While losing Kiel the Younger to LSU stings because we all thought for a minute that maybe Hoosiers coach Kevin Wilson was more of a genius than anyone imagined, at least this latest purge at the quarterback position means Wilson might be getting to assemble his players. If this ship sinks, and historically speaking, it will, then it might as well be with guys Wilson wants on campus.
Let’s not forget that Dusty Kiel sucked in his time for the Hoosiers and Ed Wright-Baker wasn’t much better. The team went 1-11 in 2011, so everyone sucked, but the quarterback position was a hurricane of awfulness before true freshman Tre Roberson was thrust into th...
