So, it's a letdown. Whatev'. Whatever your gripes, I doubt few of you traveled a thousand miles to see only your second game at the Beav in the last five years, then watch a game where the best pressure put on a Buckeye was when the Lion chased around O$U's mascot with a nutcracker during a TV timeout. Guess what? I'm dealing and so can you. Moping is for Sundays and drinking is its cure. I'm throwing a little pre-hate hate at people who t...

Play of the day: Make that four plays, actually

Saturday's biggest games turned out to be snoozers, leaving college football without a single play to define the day. But that doesn't mean things were vanilla across the country. As a salute to the day's variety, here's a four-pack of touchdowns that featured something extraordinary in the run, the catch or the bounce of the ball.
Example 1: Indiana at Iowa
The Score: Hawkeye S Tyler Sash picks off Ben Chappell and returns the ball 86 yards for a game-turning touchdown.

Iowa Delivers Excitement; Indiana Counters With Fourth Quarter of Excrement

Iowa was doing its best to come up with some intrigue to save today's early games. They started slow, falling behind after some uninspired offense in the first half. Ricky Stanzi threw four picks in the third quarter, seemingly squandering any momentum a Tyler Sash pick-six gave the Hawkeyes. And the Big Ten officials spun "wacky" on their wheel of incompetence, coming up with two highly questionable calls on Indiana touchdowns to keep the game close, at 24-14, entering the four...

Blog Ten Gameday: Iowa Does It Again, Now 9-0

The Hawkeyes just can’t make it easy can they? Today’s game against Indiana at home was supposed to be the first time Iowa had an easy win since they beat up on Iowa State earlier this year, and instead they caused Hawkeye fans across the nation to age about 25 years. When it was all said and done, though, the Hawkeyes emerged victorious once again to improve to 9-0 on the season and keep

Upset Bait: Hoosiers close the door on the Cavs

The Doc Saturday crew peruses the weekly lines and pulls out a few shockers. Remember: There's a reason they're upsets.
Matt Hinton: Indiana (+6.5) over Virginia.
My first thought here based on these teams' cumulative bodies of work to date was wha?, but you can't accuse the oddsmakers of ignoring the trends: Incredibly, Virginia is 7-1 in October over the last three years, including a crazy 4-0 run last year following a wretched, 1-3 start that included a humiliating 31-3 lo...

Better Know an Embattled Coach: Can Bill Lynch get his timing down at Indiana?

An occasional foray onto the nation's hottest seats. Part of the Doc's Big Ten Week.
You've got to feel a little sorry for both Indiana and its coach, Bill Lynch. After firing Gerry DiNardo in 2004, the long-suffering Hoosiers hired Terry Hoeppner away from Miami-Ohio, and just when it looked like Hoeppner might be turning IU around, he was diagnosed with a brain tumor. He sat out spring practice in 2007, and that June decided that he would take a medical leave of absence for the...

Indiana University Football: Slightly Improved

Sports have taken a bit of a downward turn in the last few months at Indiana University. First, the beloved football coach died and then a prized basketball recruit went into business for himself, as it were. Never fear, Indiana fan, the football team is here!

Is Wednesday too early to hype up a Saturday matchup? Maybe. Is October too early to start talking bowl berths? Definitely.

Not that it's going to stop us or Yahoo! Sports. The football-playing Hoosiers are 4-1 after beating Iowa on the road 38-20 last week. Mind you, this is one of the most historically hapless major conference teams in football. Things have gotten so bad in recent years that you may not have even known that IU is 4-1 or that they still play football at all. Hell, Lee Corso was actually our coach at one point!

IU has taken advantage of an extremely easy early-season schedule to get to their current record. Their wins have come over Indiana State, Western Michigan, Akron, and Iowa with the one loss coming at home to Illinois. They don't play Michigan or Ohio State this season and have a hapless, 1-4 Minnesota team coming to the crib this weekend. They also have the best quarterback/receiver combo in the conference in Kellen Lewis and James Hardy. That's right, I said it. They're better than Henne to Manningham partially because Michigan runs the ball too much, and partially because the Hoosiers are forced to throw due to the total absence of a running game. Oh and the Hoosiers didn't lose to Appalachian State (yeah references to that game aren't ever going to go away). Still, the point is the Indiana Hoosiers are no longer an easy game for anyone on their schedule. And James Hardy is sick.

Why are we bringing this up, other than because we're homers? Because the Purdue-controlled media want you to notice. They're everywhere, just look at Bob Griese with his shifty eyes and terrible quarterback of a son. They let articles like the Yahoo! Sports one show up early in the season so that the Hoosiers will start to feel the pressure to get that sixth win, thus gaining bowl-eligibility for the first time since 1993. In their perfect world, the Hoosiers' chances at a bowl will come down to the season-ending game against Purdue in Bloomington. Then the Boilermakers will hand the Hoosiers and their fans a painful loss and trot into whatever meaningless bowl they made. This is how Purdue fan thinks, people, they're that petty. It's a vast conspiracy and we won't just sit here and take it. We're blowing the lid off it right here, right now. Down with the Boiler-led media!

So we rebuke those who would hex our Indiana Hoosiers. This is a great start and the team isn't going to get stuck thinking about the future yet. It doesn't matter how many positive articles get written or how good a story the team is since they're playing this season for Terry Hoeppner, they have Minnesota this weekend and that's that. Plus, Purdue is totally getting killed by Ohio State this weekend, Troy Smith or no Troy Smith.

God a bowl game would be awesome. I'd totally go. But we're not thinking about that right now. Nope, not at all.

Coach Hep Remembered

Matt Mattucci, a good friend of the site, was the football beat writer at the Indiana Daily Student during Terry Hoeppner's first season as Indiana's head coach. Matt got to know the coach pretty well during that season. So we asked if he would be good enough to write something for us about Coach Hep for us. He beautifully summed up what Coach Hep meant (and still means) to Indiana University and its fans. His words follow.

In two short years, Terry Hoeppner created an incredible legacy at Indiana University - one that future coaches will likely never come close to matching. And how could they? Sure, the next IU coach to win a bowl game will go down in Hoosier lore as being a savior to the program. But in the end, it will all come back to Terry Hoeppner.

Right now as I write, ground is being broken on the new stadium, one that Coach Hep so determinedly pushed for building. Because of him, the Hoosiers will have a new stadium to play in during the coming years and will be able to put more fans in the seats. And those fans are out there, trust me - Coach Hep proved that. Ticket sales skyrocketed during the past few years, but the fans haven't kept up their end of the bargain. Hep put the best product he possibly could out onto that football field, and sadly, IU football fans didn't appreciate it as much as they should have.
